PS Edits Vol 1 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PSE 001. Rel: 18 Jan 16
  1. Discoteka Telephone (AGCP edit) (5:06)
  2. Moi Zvonok (AGCP edit) (4:50)
  3. Tantsuy (Dr Cuts edit) (5:09)
  4. Moya Sopernitsa (Dr Cuts edit) (3:28)
Review: Back in soviet times when the official local music market was controlled by the biggest record monopoly in history "Melodiya", many local musicians who wanted to express themselves in actual form, released tapes themselves and spread it through a big underground market network called "Magnitizdat" (short of Magnetic Tape Release). It began in the 60s with soviet rock movement and illegal copies of foreign music which got through border with tourists, seamen and diplomats. In the late 80s you could find there many different shades of music from underground protest rock, post punk, avant-garde to a lot of electronic pop, local kind of italo disco and dj's mixtapes with a personal rap on top of it. Plus Seven Records begins a sublable series of remastered edits which narrate about dance part of this story.

Sky Dump EP
Cat: ROGUE 015. Rel: 31 Jul 19
  1. Sky Dump (4:36)
  2. Massive Birth (4:50)
  3. Taylorpo (Warehouse Preservation Society remix) (5:23)
  4. Massive Birth (Mind Fair remix) (5:43)
Review: Coolly stepping out like a white-suited player on a Miami club strip, the high expectations set by any mention of Italian disco pioneer Daniele Baldelli are easily matched by the opener and title number. And things really only get better from there.
'Massive Birth' is an intelligent, freeform outing on a half-time, DJ Rocca's ever-tight drum programming clearly having some influence on the complex percussive patterns. On the flip, Mind Fair have their way with that original, turning it into a more grounded four-four workout if you listen beyond the top layer of rolls and snare crashes. For many, though, this one will be all about the Warehouse Preservation Society remix of 'Taylorpo', which puts Italo right back at the top of the disco agenda, sounding at once space age yet nostalgic, and unquestionably, unstoppably danceable.

  2. Nackt - "Next" (5:47)
  3. Roche - "One For Cherushii" (8:01)
  4. David Last - "All That's Left" (feat Lavender - dance mix) (5:51)
Review: Besides its inimitable name, Hobo Camp has had a pretty unbeatable first few years in the game, switching up the electro sound with shades of loopy house and techno. These guys have released over two dozen EPs since 2016, and are showing no signs of stopping if this new collaborative release is anything to by! Pumping the vibes through with utter ease, Run The Length Of Your Wilderness is a daring, rip-roaring amalgamation of tech-driven sounds that span just about every quality corner of the game. "The Industrial City", from Cherushii, moans and weeps with a fragile acid bassline over broken percussion beats, while Nackt's "Next" floats at a house tempo, driven forwards by a winding bass from the darkest corners of the 4/4 game. On the flip, Roche's "One For Cherushii" bigs up his counterpart with a deep, aqueous house chugger, and David Last's "All That's Left" drops a clean, sparkly prog house groover for the lovers.

Review: Sleazy McQueen presents another wicked serving of Disco deviance on the always reliable Whiskey Disco. The North Carolina based imprint's 57th edition gives us four more surefire disco edits by the likes of Tony Chocoloney from Melbourne, Australia who gives us some funked-up soulpower on "Less Groove", Ukrainian Alex Zuiev gives us a loungey kinda something' on the tres chic "Valentina" and Anthony Mansfield delivers an unrepentant use of sleek filter sweeps throughout the slo-mo antics of "It's Too Late" featuring a bit of help from good buddy DJ M3.

  1. Discoteca (Heavy Fun dub)
  2. Brute
  3. Discoteca (Faze Action remix)
  4. Discoteca (Heavy Fun instrumental)
Review: Balearic titans Chris Coco and DJ Rocca team up on this new slab for Faze Action which celebrates all the finest qualities of these two veteran maestros. 'Discoteca (Heavy Fun Dub)' pours plenty into the mix, from sizzling disco and dreamy dub to slick 80s motifs, and yet it all comes off feeling very chilled indeed. 'Brute' plays around with analogue synths and raw drum machine punch to create a slow but intense cosmic workout, before Faze Action themselves step up to rework 'Discoteca' into a lean and mean club tool. For those who want to skip the breathy vocals, there's also an instrumental mix of 'Discoteca' included on the B2.

Review: Ombra International is a vinyl only series inviting artists from different cities from around the globe to contribute their rock and roll or post-punk influenced grooves via slo-mo disco and cold wave sonics. OMBRA INTL 002 is four tracks bringing together Cannibal Ink (Madrid) with the sleazy psych rock of "La Haine", Dawn Again from Sydney, K-effect (Toledo) and Curses in Berlin. Curses is the dark and romantic moniker from New York City native Luca Venezia aka Trouble & Bass main man Drop The Lime who serves up the awesome "Neu Dimension".

Review: D-Pulse trippy album "Consequenced" now got first portion of remixes from band's favorite producers. Ron Basejam of Crazy P delivers a straight-forward disco gem, while Harvey Sutherland goes minimal and atmospheric in his unexpectedly laid back remix. RJ being a one half of Durerstruben sends the original "Waltz on the run" back in 2000's on a summer cruise and D-Pulse's homie Sportloto pours some fuel into the Russian cosmic-disco scene rocket.

  3. Okay Okay (Lillo Carillo & Deaf Kick edit) (6:21)
  4. Hey Ciao Tu (Guido Minisky/The Reflex edit) (6:24)
Review: Pino D'Angio enjoyed an interesting career, finding fame in his native Italy as both an author and composer. Around the turn of the '80s, he released a number of fine disco cuts, including the tasty "Okay Okay". It boasted a gravelly rap in Italian, rubbery electric bass, twinkling electric piano solos, and just the right amount of bouncy disco swing. Here, Editor's Kutz have licensed the original, backing it up with a pair of fresh re-edits: a subtle, punchier touch-up from Sleazy McQueen and VinylAddicted, and a disco-house tweak from Lillo and Deaf Kick. Arguably best of all, though, is The Reflex's adjustment of Guido Minisky's re-edit of sax-laden, boogie era jazz-funk jam "Hey Ciao Tu".

  2. Key Lime (Patchworks remix) (5:59)
  3. Key Lime (Ron Basejam remix) (7:22)
  4. Key Lime (COEO remix) (6:02)
Review: House of Disco's latest essential missive comes from D'Arabia, a Bologna-based producer with one 12" to his name (2016's Red Rooster E.P on the label of the same name). "Key Lime" sounds like a life-affirming peak-time anthem in the making, featuring a snaking saxophone solo floating above "Get A Move On" style drums and a fantastically heavy bass guitar riff. The fine remix package is headed up by organic deep house veteran Patchworks, who gives the track a suitably warm and jazzy fix-up, and Crazy P man Ron Basejam, whose tasty revision predictably moves further towards jazz-funk/deep disco fusion. If you're in the mood for a more musically expansive but bumping interpretation, COEO's take is the one to check.

Cat: DB 010. Rel: 25 Sep 19
  1. Keep Me On Fire (7:01)
  2. I Tried To Help It (6:34)
  3. Termination (6:39)
Review: This is a big reissue of some disco-not-disco weirdness as cut up and chopped, skewed and made to dazzle by the Bastedos camp. "Keep Me On Fire" is a chugging pumper with fat drums and noodling riffs that sets the groove train in motion and keeps it running. "I Tried To Help It" is even more wild and impassioned thanks to the unabashed vocal that cries in soulful falsettos while Chic-style riffs power it along. "Termination" ends in a freaky but funky fashion with twisted vocals and gauzy guitar chords layering up into a marching wall of sound that's laden with effects.

  1. Percy (4:55)
  2. Bolass'd (5:05)
Review: Dane//Close is sounding fierce as hell on this 7" edit grip for the ever-excellent Duca Bianco. Having previously moonlighted on Power Station and Prasens Editionen, you know this is a head with an instinct for alternative selections to make you move. On the A side, he tackles the incendiary "I Don't Wanna Go Out" by iconic Australian punks X (not to be confused with the LA band), stretching out the rowdy groove of the original's two-minute burst. On the B side, things take a slinkier turn into oddball boogie sleaze - the source material isn't so easy to detect, but it's definitely a jam to get low tempo lovers moving.

  3. Dane - "I Want More" (7:34)
  4. Eddie C - "One For Dane" (4:13)
Review: Canada's foremost re-edit imprint continues to churn out the hits, largely by delivering dub disco and Balearic-tinged interpretations of long forgotten or little-known cuts. Common Edit regulars Dane and Khotin join forces on the A-side, delivering a sweet chunk of boogie-era synthesizer reggae ("Imho"), before heading futher towards peaktime territory with the low-slung, late night AOR disco of "System". Eddie C digs delves into his seemingly bottomless crates of obscurities for inspiration on "I Want More", a gorgeous chunk of piano-laden Balearic disco sweetness. Finally, Dane lights up something medicinal, closes his eyes and delivers the smacked-out, guitar-laden ambient chug of "One For Dane". It's an absolute beauty, if truth be told.

  2. Kunikos TV (DT edit) (5:04)
  3. Caja Negra (DT & DC version Acido) (6:35)
  4. Night Giver (DC edit) (5:46)
Review: Los Angeles disco Stus Pleasure Of Love return with their fifth edition of piping hot edits, respectfully respliced for your convenience. This one features co-founder of the local Heat-Wave party series (and one half of Cosmic Kids) Daniel Terndrup, who goes one-for-one with Trap.Avoid member Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb on these four cuts. Kicking off the A side is Billard, who takes the razor to a wonderfully sunkissed/tropical style tune on "Carribean Son", while Terndrup gets properly lo-slung on the cheeky and rather familiar groove of "Kinikos TV". On the flip, it's all about "Caja Negra" (DT & DC version Acido) where they join forces on this tripped-out tribal Italo number.

  4. Understand (Dave Allison remix) (6:07)
Review: Editorial's new sublabel Clandestine Boogie intends on getting everyone grooving on the dancefloor. The mysterious Dark Horse Disco is in charge here, and bringing the goods. Beginning with the sleazy guitar riffs on "Hold On" nailing that French Touch kida vibe, the original grooves keep coming courtesy of the late night mood lighting on "Wait For You" with its sweet and sampled vocal hooks and the neon-lit boogie down vibe of "Understand" sure to get some sexy moments happening at any club you play this to. Finally we have Montrealer nu-disco hero Dave Allison (Editorial/Kinjo) doing what he does best on his remix, which is equally as seductive but more glossy and hi-definition.

Review: The My Rules crew is back with its first release of 2019 and doesn't disappoint: this time they've come up with a much fawned over cosmic disco classic from Belgian outfit Candy Darling & The Viscounts. The original "Movin'" is a previously Japan only 12" promo mix of a disco cover of a Lee Hazelwood surf song that has edgy stabs and a squelchy bassline to die for. The flip side houses a special rework by Mt Rules label boss Justin Van Der Volgen. He tweaks the inner workings of the tune to draw out the key bits for utter dance floor destruction. Form the bar to the cub to the afters, this one is primed and ready to detonate.

  3. Plain Of Jars (6:49)
  4. Lavender (featuring Seth Cobblepot) (6:40)
Review: Rothmans turn to debutant producer Dawn Again, who strides onto the football-focused label with a confident grip of otherworldly hardware jams. As is customary on the label, the mood takes on a laid back approach to four to the floor grooves, with "Coloured Pens" kicking off proceedings on a soaring bed of psyched-out house optimism. While "The Italian" may be moodier in its demeanour, it's still just as mellow in its delivery, capitalising on alluring wave synths and reverb swells to great effect. "Plain Of Jars" takes a trippier direction with its bubbling FX and bongo-powered beatdown, and then "Lavender" switches things up with a rolling breakbeat undercarriage and plush lead lines on top.

Review: Gator Boots keeps on striding forwards with a tasty 12" that is aimed directly at the dance floor. It comes from Japanese house music duo don dadas, Dazzle Drums and they offer up masterclass edits of two absolute soul/disco anthems. Word on the street is that 'Mandrill' is already getting big plays from Louie Vega. 'Sakossa' is the steamy opener, with a jumbled of steel drums and guitar riffs coalescing beneath a tropical flute sound that brings the party. 'Mandrill' is a fully psyched-out floor filler with big breaks and tons of reverb and the Latin Mix then turns the whole thing up to 11.

Review: Diego Cortez Salas is DJ and producer from Brussels that has been making waves in recent times with some awesome releases for imprints such as Live At Robert Johnson, Correspondent and River Rapid. His new one comes courtesy of new Parisian label Slowciety, featuring more of his trademark blend of classic Balearic house and dark disco. Opening with the moody Italo influenced groove of 'Exquisite Chaos' and the strobe-lit euphoria of 'Undivided' with its infectious 303 acid throughout (there's an epic remix by Frankfurt legend Roman Fluegel later on, too). Things take a more ominous turn on the flip, with the neon-lit dancefloor drama of 'Forgotten Memories' and its muscular EBM bassline.

  1. De Gama - "Sometimes Sometimes" (7:07)
  2. Les Inferno - "Yeah C'mon" (6:51)
Review: A double dose of fun from Samosa Records here, as partners in crime De Gama (Stefano Gamma) and Les Inferno (Pierandrea The Professor) deliver a dancefloor delight each over two sides of wax. Gamma's solo cut "Sometimes Sometimes" resides on side A, with the long-serving Italian gleefully joining the dots between sumptuous, string-laden disco-soul warmth and filter-sporting deep house, with unsurprisingly sumptuous results. The flipside collaborative track is an altogether bolder and more peak-time ready affair. It sees Les Inferno add some chunky house bounce to a jaunty, electric piano-heavy chunk of gospel-influenced disco goodness.

Review: Speeding through the neon sky and hunting replicants everywhere...Deckard makes his debut on To Rack & Ruin. First up is Sean Lives which, stomps along with enough guitar twangs and honky tonk piano chords that would make this cut sound right at home at a James Brown after party. A catchy vocal throughout before an almighty breakdown that sneaks in one of the finest saxophone solos heard since that guy in The Lostboys. On Rustic Rage Deckard joins Paper Recordings' debauched debonair of disco Flash Atkins taking in a lesser known cut from "The Man In Black" himself. We start things off with a solid 4/4 kick alongside a guitar loop that build n builds n builds like a dance floor locomotive albeit one that's draped with squelchy synths & popping percussion before dropping with vocals that's guaranteed to cause hand blisters from a serious clap along...

  1. Dejay Cease - "The Fixer"
  2. Boogienite - "Boy Ok"
Review: If you're going to beat 'em down, you need the right tools. On the label's second release, Grimy Trax has given you a couple hammers.
The A-side, DeJay Cease's 'The Fixer' is straight Chicago. We're talking banging 909 funk that might be found buried on a particularly unhinged Ron Hardy mix. A simple bass line and two notes of acid are all it takes to make the floor go wild. This is functional heat with enough atmosphere to engage the mind, body and soul.
On the B-side, rising Chicago son Boogienite proves he's earned the hype. 'Boy, OK' is an instant classic thanks to some recognizable disco strings and a funky escalator of a bassline. The producer uses a trippy, rubberband synth which eventually turns into rhythmic, teasing vocal. The mixdown is ridiculous, especially as the lengthy track passes the halfway mark. Boogie brings the bassline in and out in between beautiful ambient rhodes and a call and response male and female vocal. Those strings hit again and you feel no pain.

Review: On their latest 12", the Razor 'N' Tape crew has looked to Berlin, rather than Brooklyn, for inspiration. As the title suggests, the man at the controls this time round is Oye Records founder Markus "Delfonic" Lindner. He hits the ground running with "The Flow", a deliciously loved-up interpretation of one of the sweetest, baggiest and dewy-eyed disco-soul tunes around. While undeniably floor-friendly, there's no attempt made to beef up the track unnecessarily, with Lindner's addition percussion tending towards the subtle and reverential. Those hankering after something a little sweatier should check the disco-funk hustle of "SPF" (which comes complete with some seriously spacey synth solos) and Lindner's excellent rearrangement of a lesser-known cover of O'Jays classic "I Love Music".

  4. Stand By Me (5:15)
Review: Anoymous edit collective Delicate Wash air a second batch of freshly laundered reworks following the runaway success of their April 2018 debut. As with its' predecessor, the vibe is humid, cosmic and gently Balearic. Opener "Exotica" sees the mystery washers make merry with a jazzy, zouk-influenced '80s instrumental rich in glistening guitar solos and new age synthesizer melodies, while "Syndrome 28"is a wonderfully spacey mix of vibrant synthesizer solos and sparse machine percussion. Over on side B, "The Undertaker" is a curiously jaunty, synth-heavy library jazz-funk workout, while EP highlight "Stand By Me" sees them tinker with a spaced-out, dubbed-out electrofunk jam rich in rubbery bass, stuttering machine beats and synthesizer sax solos. Bonkers but brilliant.

Review: It's pretty brave to call your record A New Paradigm but that's what Luca Dell'Orso has done here and he provides enough musical evidence to have a fairly strong case. His vision of disco is one seen through a retro lens, with glossy chords and pixelated leads. It's the future as we imagined it might be back in the 80s, but somehow it still slid fresh. Chicago claps and pop hooks, tense basslines and melancholic moods all feature along the way and make this an expansive and journeying record that strikes all the right emotional and dramatic notes.
