Review: Bands often work so hard to get the right producer and sound as slick as possible. But sometimes those initial ideas with fewer cooks in the kitchen sound a lot more exciting. This collection of Devo studio demos and unreleased tracks culled from cassettes, reel-to-reel tapes, multi-tracks and DATs - spanning their independent label era - is no exception. It's raw, rough and ready in a way that takes you back to the 70s and makes you want to dig out some double denim. Re-recorded in a state-of-the-art studio you'd probably feel very much in the present. It's a mammoth collection with over two-and-a-half hours of material and was originally released in 2000, but this four LP deluxe version is the most eye-catching way to spend time digging through the New Wave icons' stuff and understand why they were admired by the likes of David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Neil Young at this early stage of their career.

Review: Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' unforgettable 1958 concert at Club Saint Germain in Paris is finally available in full, spread across three LPs in red, white and blue, paying homage to France. This set brings together Lee Morgan's searing trumpet, Benny Golson's soulful sax, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt's steady bass, with Parisian local Kenny Clarke joining on drums for 'A Night in Tunisia.' The energy is electric and it's easy to hear why this performance took home the 1959 Grand Prix du Disqueiit's jazz history in action.

Review: It's been a long time since Halo: Combat Evolved revolutionised the word of first-person shooter video games. Graphically superior to anything that had come before it, the franchise also benefits from a spectacularly gripping storyline in which humans are outgunned and out-teched by a ruthless and uncompromising alliance of superiorly equipped alien races united as The Covenant. The titular Halo adds a kind of Prometheus air of uncertainty, as nobody really knows what it does until attempts to activate the galaxy-destroying weapon reveal something worse than death - a parasitic breed called the Flood. If all that was enough to blow everyone away in 2001, 2004 brought us to a whole new level of immersion in this future scape. Just like its predecessor, a big part of the impact was the visionary score by gaming soundtrack masters Martin O'Donnell and Michael Savatori. Now here it is in all its Gregorian chanting glory.

Review: Going on to become the biggest selling record in America in 1979, Supertramp's sixth album Breakfast In America is perhaps the quintessential historic example of a British album destined to "break the USA". As if forecasted in advance, 1979 heard the band take capital advantage of the bilateral "special relationship" formed between the two nations since the War, a principle which was of course thereafter reflected in the rock industry. After Led Zep but long before Sting, Supertramp would here spawn the likes of 'The Logical Song', 'Goodbye Stranger', and 'Take The Long Way Home', all of which were smash hits in the US but comparatively denervated back home, where they would only scrape the top ten in the Charts. Despite such an imbalance in successes, this show from the Pavillon de Paris captures the band back in Europe that year, both filmed and recorded in December 1979.

Review: You had us at Sakamoto. Or rather you had us at "excerpts from Ryuichi Sakamoto's time working under Nippon Colombia's label, Better Days. First released in 1992, this 12-track compilation runs from tracks that appeared on the Japanese synth legend's debut album, Thousand Knives, first released in 1978, through to songs written with the iconic session group KYLYN, featuring celebrated guitar great Kazumi Watanabe. Ever the auteur, even if you didn't know this was Sakamoto in proper landmark mode, there's no chance the sounds here could really be confused for anyone or anything else. It's mature and intelligent, yet strangely - and typically - fun, childlike and a little cartoonish, sharing as much in common with experimental electronica that was emerging during the 1970s and 1980s as video game scores from the 1990s.

Review: The Three Blind Mice compilation, curated by DJ and producer Tatsuo Sunaga, offers a brilliant overview of the iconic Japanese jazz label's legacy. Review: Breaking from his directorial duties, American cinema auteur Eli Roth (Borderlands, Knock Knock, Green Inferno) stops by the CAM Sugar sound studio for a rare double 7" LP, pinching listeners by the ear and dragging them along a forbidden trail along the gothic, red-lit path that is Italian soundtrack legendariness. Drawing his selections here from a wealth of Italian B-movie expertise, not to mention ownership in his own collection, the contemporary horrorist has chosen 20 delicious but still downright saucy disco, bossa nova and psych tunes here, centring on the Italian Sexy Comedy softcore era of 1969-81.

Review: Originally released in 1978, Road To Ruin would serve as the fourth full-length from leather jacket-clad punk pioneers The Ramones. While a rejected, mitigated flop upon release due to the band's swing for the radio fences (or airwaves) complete with sonic elements at the time alien to the punkosphere such as acoustic guitars, lead guitar solos and 60s pop ballads, in the near five decades since release, the project has been reevaluated as a bold successor to 1977's iconic Rocket To Russia (although that album did place 50 places ahead on the Billboard 200 at the time of release). Marking (no pun intended) their first effort to feature drummer Marky Ramone, who replaced Tommy Ramone after his departure due to the inability to keep up with the rigors of touring and lack of residuals from their previous record; the album's glossy, clean production has slowly morphed from malaise to praise over the ensuing decades, while offering up some of their most timeless and essential bangers including 'Needles & Pins' and 'I Wanna Be Sedated' (which if Spotify metrics are anything to go by, is the band's most popular song after, of course, 'Blitzkrieg Bop').

Review: The ZYX label returns with a second volume of The Italo Disco Collection and this one is another limited edition affair that comes as a four LP box set with a beach ball included. It covers plenty f ground, all of it fantastically well produced with irresistibly happy Italo melodies, strident disco groves and some fantastic synth work from names like Koto, Baby's Gang, Raggio Di Luna aka Moon Ra, Cyber People and many more all contributing to another complete and comprehensive collection.

Review: Chris Brown's deluxe edition of 11:11 adds 13 new tracks to the original release, bringing the total to an impressive 35 across this triple vinyl set. The album opens with 'Bruce Lee,' a heartfelt ballad where Brown reflects on relationship struggles, using water as a metaphor for resilience. Review: London Records has announced a deluxe reissue of Orbital's iconic debut album, affectionately known as the Green Album. Originally released in 1991, it straddled the line between rave and ambient techno, featuring timeless tracks like 'Chime', 'Belfast,' and the Butthole Surfers-sampling 'Satan.' Now, those tracks are considered cornerstones of the early UK techno movement. This 4 disc CD set offers the most comprehensive experience, with the original album on disc one and a treasure trove of Green Album-era B-sides, remixes, and alternative versions on discs two and three. Disc four treats fans to two live sets from 1991/92, sourced from the band's soundboard recordings. Wrapped in a 12" box, the deluxe edition includes reprinted flyers from the era and a lavish 60-page hardback book chronicling the Green Album's story, complete with new notes and a track-by-track analysis by Phil and Paul Hartnoll. Review: The influence of Type O Negative continues to be felt long after Peter Steele's death signalled the end of the band. The goth metal band have a generous number of high points in their career, and 2003 album Life Is Killing Me is surely one of them. Drawing on his personal struggles at the time, Steele created a powerful statement draped in the grandiose style of rock he had cultivated since the band's debut. As well as the single 'I Don't Wanna Be Me', there was a cover of the song 'Angry Inch' and the opening track 'Thir13teen', a piece of music from classic TV show The Munsters. Two decades on from its original release, this is the first time the album has been released on vinyl, presented as a triple black and green pressing in a trifold sleeve.

Review: Shungo Sawada, a trailblazer in Japan's modern jazz scene, delivers a rare gem with his album Formation. Despite his status as a legendary guitarist since the 1940s, Sawada's discography under his own name is surprisingly sparse, making this release particularly noteworthy. Formation opens with a distinctive rendition of Wayne Shorter's 'Footprints'ielegant and refined, yet imbued with a cool, understated charm. The album then shifts gears with the energetic title track, 'Formation,' before diving into the jazz-rock fusion of 'Unlucky Guy.' It concludes with another Shorter composition, 'Chief Crazy Horse,' bringing the album to a thoughtful close. This collection has Sawada's versatility and mastery on full display, providing a polished and cohesive snapshot of Japan's "new mainstream" jazz movement.

Review: From the moment you hit play on 'A New Threat Is Born', the first few minutes on this soundtrack to the acclaimed video game, Resident Evil 3, you could easily close your eyes and feel like you're back sat in front of a TV playing the story through. If you're unfamiliar with the franchise, let's just say it (re)wrote the book on survival horror, and a big part of this was in the scores used to accompany the on-screen tension. Less focused on specific theme tunes and tracks, over time the emphasis has increasingly fallen on building atmosphere and setting up jump scares for unassuming players. On a record, that sounds like a combination of fast moving and quickly developing instrumental movements and intimidating sound effects. Perhaps not the dinner party soundtrack you were looking for, nevertheless it makes a big impact.

Review: Released to acclaim in 1985, The Falcon and the Snowman recounts the extraordinary true story of Christopher Boyce (Timothy Hutton) and Andrew Daulton Lee (Sean Penn), childhood friends who betrayed their country by selling U.S. satellite secrets to the Soviets in the 70s. The film's score, crafted by jazz virtuoso Pat Metheny alongside pianist Lyle Mays, is a masterful blend of tension and melancholy, enriched by orchestral arrangements from the National Philharmonic Orchestra. The standout track, 'This Is Not America,' features lyrics by David Bowie and became one of his notable hits of the decade, reaching No. 14 in the UK. All in all, an exclusive collector's box set.

Review: The original soundtrack for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM is now available on this superb vinyl edition. It of course accompanies the feature film adaptation of the renowned Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Series. Building upon the success of that TV anime which aired from October 2002, the film delves deeper into the Cosmic Era, offering a fresh narrative set in C.E. 75. With contributions from the original TV anime team and music composed by Toshihiko Sahashi, fans enjoyed the seamless transition from the small screen to the big screen. The analogue version of the soundtrack, presented on a stunning three-disc set of coloured vinyl, adds a touch of luxury to this cinematic experience.

Review: To mark their 40th anniversary, Hugo Largo is releasing a comprehensive collection that takes in their entire studio output, namely the albums Drum from 1988 and Mettle from 1989, as well as a full album of previously unreleased and live recordings titled Hugo Largo Unreleased and Live 1984-1991. These albums, which have long been out of print, are now being reissued with special essays from R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, who produced Drum, as well as contributions from Brian Eno and band member Tim Sommer. This complete collection celebrates the band's influential experimental sound and shows why they had such a lasting impact on the alternative scene.

Review: Newly, radically reimagined remixes created from John Lennon's classic song, Mind Games. These nine Meditation Mixes craft their own space while maintaining firm and authentic roots in John Lennon's original recording. Each have been radically altered, slowed down and extended, ranging from five to ten to over 33 minutes, allowing the soundtrack to wash over the listener and provide a relaxing deep listening experience. Four tracks are presented as binaural versions which each focus on different types of brain waves: Beta, Delta, Gamma and Theta. Named 'Mind', 'Space', 'Spirit' and 'Love', these exploit the response of the ear to left and right frequencies, which constructively combine to produce a new frequency, which in turn, as they say, activates beneficial brain patterns. Produced by Sean Lennon, these contemporary Lennon versions aim to positively impact the contemporary anxiety-racked listener, whose appetite for deep listening has only understandably increased in recent years.

Review: Light In The Attic teams up with Laurie Anderson and the Lou Reed Archive for a thrilling retrospective, Why Don't You Smile Now: Lou Reed At Pickwick Records 1964-65. An expansive selection of songs all written by Lou Reed, during his mid-60s stint as the staff songwriter for the long-defunct label Pickwick Records, this is a rare glimpse of a master rock musician stepping out of the limelight over the course of 25 songs, yet still letting the form and contour of his voice and sensibility be heard. All this was achieved before Reed had at all launched his career with the Velvets; it may indeed be said that this pubescent 60s period was the firelighter to Reed's flame, as the label specialised in soundalike records that emulated the major pop hits of the day - it's no wonder Reed would absorb such emulations and take them in as his own, albeit with a Century-defining twist. Channelling everything from teenybopper pop to soul-inflected garage rock, whether byJeannie Larimore, The Hi-Lifes or The Hollywoods, we get a thorough look-in here as to what made Reed and his contemporaries tick, and what Reed made tick in turn, before the fame.

Review: Now that's what we call an album title 2021. As the name implies, we're skirting the edges of 1980s Japanese pop, opting to explore the strange, sci-fi hued, traditionally rooted noises that weren't necessarily dominant in the Far East country at that time, but certainly found favour with more explorative listeners. And it's not hard to hear why.

Tracks like 'Days Man' by Yoshio Ojima could work well in a slo-mo house or electronica set today. While preceding effort 'Hikari No Ito Kin No Ito' from Mishio Ogawa is like a strangely innocent hybrid of lullaby and pop song. Elsewhere, the twinkling synths and wet snare hits of Naomi Asai's 'Yakan Hikou' further accentuate the surrealism running through so much of what is here. One for the trophy cabinet, collectors take note (and form a queue).

It also instantly maps to all the virtual instruments included with the Oxygen Pro Mini (Velvet, Mini Grand, Vacuum, Boom, DB33, Xpand!2). These world-class Air Music Tech plugins can be fully controlled by the Oxygen Pro Mini and used in real-time as you create and mix your music.

With Smart Chord and Smart Scale technology, creating music and transferring what's in your imagination to what you hear coming out of your computer has never been easier!

With Smart Chord activated, pressing a single key or pad will play a full chord rather than just one note. The key or pad you press will determine the root note in the chord. The rest of the chord's properties (Major, Minor, and Voicing - 1,3,5; 1,3,5,7, etc.) are determined by the settings you choose. Smart Chord also has a Custom Mode which lets you to determine the chord structure that will be assigned to each key by manually playing it. For example, if you select Custom Mode, and play a 1-b3-5-b7 chord, every key will then be assigned to play this chord structure. The note of the key you press will serve as the root of the chord and all of the parameters can be edited right on the Oxygen Pro Mini!

The Oxygen Pro Mini also features intelligent Smart Scale technology. With Smart Scale, you can set the key bed so that only notes in the selected scale are able to be played. This allows you to play within a chosen scale without the risk of playing any "wrong" notes. You can choose from 16 different scale variations when assigning a scale to the keyboard. Smart Scale is easy to activate and deactivate and allows you to set the scale parameters you need to keep you focused on creating.

Built into the Oxygen Pro Mini are features that are essential to creating modern day pop, electronic, hip hop, and dance music. Note Repeat and the built-in Arpeggiator open up a world of precise music production and live sound techniques to make your music sound professional.

Note Repeat allows you to hold down any of the custom-made M-Audio performance pads and you'll hear a repeated rhythmic pattern at a selectable note division. The Note Repeat feature can be activated momentarily or can be used in Latch mode. If you choose Momentary, holding the Note Repeat button will make the note played by the pad automatically repeat. If you choose Latch, pressing any pad will cause its assigned note to repeat without you having to hold down the Note Repeat button.

The built-in Arpeggiator will affect anything you are playing on the keys from any virtual instrument in your DAW. When the Arpeggiator is activated, the keyboard will repeatedly play the pressed keys in sequence. The arpeggiator's timing and rhythm is based on the keyboard's time division setting and either the keyboard's or your DAW's tempo setting. Each note in the arpeggio will be the length you've selected for the time division setting; for example, if you select 1/4, each note in the arpeggio will be a quarter note. This powerful tool can operate in Latch or Momentary mode, making it easy to unleash your creativity.
