Review: ex:el is the third studio album by 808 State, originally released on 4 March 1991 by ZTT Records. In contrast to the band's previous work, the album features catchier melodies and heavier acid techno beats and percussion, embracing earlier flirtations with hip-hop and industrial. The album also features the guest vocals of Bernard Sumner of Joy Division and New Order, who sings on 'Spanish Heart' and Bjork, who sings on 'Qmart' and 'Ooops', and is credited with co-writing both. Review: Swedish pop legends ABBA seem to be as talked about these days as ever, largely down to the fact that the holographic stage show proved such a huge success with all those who continue to pack it out in the capital. They were very much at the peak of their powers back in 1981 when The Visitors, their eighth studio album, arrived. It actually saw the group move away from their super light and airy and catchy pop of previous works and enter more mature and complex musical worlds. The fact that Benny and Frida had recently split up coloured some of the tunes such as 'When All Is Said And Done' and even topical Cold War themes were explored.

Here is part 2, which continues the gathering of lesser known non-album works. Going into the new millennium at the time, to have sessions tracks like 'For What It's Worth' and 'Communication' are particular exciting to get a feel for the band performance wise without any outside distractions or fans in a live setting. The last side is also very worth of note for the material presented. Closing things on a high note in a row are the brilliant 'Slowdown Town', and 'Give Me Your Eyes' with the powerful 'Slow' as the last song. The Cardigans, who first made waves with Emmerdale (1994) and Life (1995), gained international fame with hits like 'Lovefool' from First Band on the Moon (1996) and 'Erase/Rewind' from Gran Turismo (1998). Review: Alternative rock and Goth legends The Cure were at an all-time high in popularity as they embarked on their 1993 tour across Europe. Enjoying the result of their most successful album Wish, the band was to take on their biggest world tour yet. For the previous two tours, there was no proper full recording of the band live by the group themselves. Robert Smith wanted to change that and a handful of shows were recorded to be edited together for the live albums Paris and Show. Paris shows the power of The Cure's new lineup which featured a new drummer, keyboard player and guitar player. Like most Cure concerts, the setlist is a varied mix of brand-new tracks at the time (Apart and A Letter to Elise) many classics (Figurehead, A Charlotte Sometimes and Shake Dog Shake) but then always a sprinkle of lesser-known ones like 'Dressing Up'. This edition is the 30th Anniversary release of the evergreen original.

Review: There is plenty to draw you into this special release for Record Store Day 2024 before you even drop the needle on the record. The romantic cover with its overtones of balmy nights by the sea, the lo-fi design of it all, but also the slightly kitsch sub-title -The Romantic Guitar Of Amancio D'Silva. The music is just as good thankfully and is now available on vinyl for the first time since it was first released back in 1971. It is a cult fav that has often be listed for well over three hundred quid before now and was released as part of the Lansdowne Series, overseen by the influential Denis Preston, one of the UK's first independent record producers. All the tracks are instrumentals and include pieces by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and Hoagy Carmichael.

For Lack of a Better Name was the Canadian's fourth album back in 2009 and it features the critically acclaimed 'Strobe' as well as 'Ghosts 'n' Stuff' with Rob Swire of Pendulum. As far as electro and prog house goes, it hits all the right notes.

Review: Sheffield rock royalty Def Leppard build momentous hype for their upcoming tour alongside Journey with the release of their brand new single 'Just Like 73'. Written in collaboration with Rage Against The Machine axeman Tom Morello, the banger comes complete with an absurd music video of computer generated de-aged models of the band and a parachuting Morello making their way to Earl's Court to perform for a massive crowd of adoring fans. Elaborating on the experience, the guitar guru stated - "I had a blast rocking a solo on 'Just Like 73.' I played 'Rock of Ages' in my college cover band almost 40 years ago and here Def Leppard are still killing it in stadiums with a brand-new tune that's one of their best." Pressed on limited 7" wax with an alternative version on the flip, the Leppard evidently still have plenty of sugar in the petrol tank.

Review: There's a question we keep asking ourselves every time we hear it. Is 'Romeo & Juliet' the most bittersweet romantic rock ballad of all time? We think it's definitely up there, retelling the tale of star crossed lovers for the 20th Century, Dire Straits' inimitable blues-hued sound provided the perfect springboard for a track that grabs you by the heartstrings and doesn't let go. Of course, there's more to Making Moves than this alone. Released in 1980, the record also comes with 'Tunnel of Love', perhaps best known as that song from the Richard Gere movie, An Officer & A Gentlemen. But it might be the hidden gems, or at least non-singles, that really make this one - 'Expresso Love' and 'Hand In Hand', for example. Remastered and sounding better than ever, we'll leave it to you to decide.

Review: A true enigma, an artist that represents all that was fascinating and romantic and alluring and intriguing about 20th Century sounds, Brian Eno was always going to need a feature length documentary, when the time was right. Premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Eno, Gary Hustwit's ode to the man, myth and legend, wowed critics and blew audiences away. Not least because it uses a computer programme which selects footage and edits the movie so a different version is shown at every screening. Innovation befitting Eno, removing the visuals and focusing on the sounds readjusts our vision to bring Eno into greater focus. The breadth of what's on this soundtrack is remarkable, from upfront indie on 'Stiff' and the weird folk-pop of 'Spinning Away', a John Cale collaboration, the ghostly post-rave of 'Cmon' with Fred Again, spectacular pianos of 'Motion In The Field', ethereal ambient vocals on 'There Were Bells', the angular punk dominating 'Third Uncle' - we could go on, and on, and on.

Review: When The Ship was released in 2016, Brian Eno was comfortably settled into a rhythm with Warp Records which had yielded multiple albums with Karl Hyde amongst other projects. The Ship was notable in that it was Eno's first solo record with vocals since 2005's Another Day On Earth and its widespread acclaim saw it make an impression on the UK charts. Loosely based around the rich thematic thread of the Titanic, but it's as much an exploration of Eno's older, lower register vocal. There's also a choice cover of The Velvet Underground's 'I'm Set Free', which brings this majestic album to a close. Now it's seeing a re-release via UMR pressed on Coke bottle green vinyl.
