Michel Magne's Le Monocle Rit Jaune is a great example of this. It was originally released on seven-inch single in 1964 and contains a quartet of tunes featured on the soundtrack to a French comedy film of the same name. The EP-opening title track is our pick: a jaunty, club-ready, flute-sporting jazz number that sounds a little like Dave Brubeck classic 'Take Five'. The other three compositions are a little cheekier and quirkier, with more obvious roots in cinematic comedy, but no less inspired in their own way.

The pieces were composed by Gianni Marchetti, an Italian composer widely known for his work in various genres of cinema. Review: Curiously, 'The Winning Streak' has nothing to do with Miami Vice the TV series - in fact, the artist was an alias of library music legend Alan Hawkshaw and the track was a piece he composed in the early 1980s that ended up being used as the theme for a long-forgotten UK drama about 'family business intrigue'. The track, presented on this Miss You reissue in extended and original forms, is however a far-sighted treat - a combination of Harold Flatermeyer style synthsesiser excellence, delay-laden drums, Martin Rushent-esque percussion, trippy melodic motifs and just the right amount of sonic intrigue. A slept-on delight for sure. To round off an excellent EP, we also get original bonus cut 'Roadrunner', a synth-heavy instrumental which was used as incidental music in the TV series.

Review: Stridulum (aka. The Visitor) is a 1979 sci-fi horror that featured a star-studded cast including Mel Ferrer, John Huston, and Shelley Winters. The score was written by Italian composer Franco Micalizzi and while the movie wasn't a huge commercial success, the soundtrack became a favourite amongst collectors even if Micalizzi is still best known for his Poliziotteschi scores and collaborations with director Umberto Lenzi. His trademark sound was still there for all to hear and now three key cuts form it are pressed up to this special 7".

Review: Brooklyn based Mighty Eye welcomes the Michael Leonhart Orchestra - which features some 20+ musicians - for their first single since 2018, although the collective has put out three albums in that time. These two cuts on this 45rpm are the first and second movements in Michael Leonhart's The Normyn Suite #1, which is a soundtrack to the five stages of grieving and is both a celebration and a requiem. The soundtrack is inspired by the death of an old dog and first appeared on The Normyn Suites album. Here it is expanded with the original brass, woodwinds, and strings now siting with choir and found percussion as well as gritty breakbeats from Nick Movshon.

Review: The elusive Minus Group was a mysterious outfit that was headed up by the multi-instrumentalist Enzo Minuti who is also known as Ezy Minus. They recorded this superbly good psyched-out and dubbed up masterpiece in 1981 and here both sides offer the same tune in different arrangements. There is more of an afro vibe to the opener with great sax and synth phrasings and vocals from a choir that are weirdly processed. On the flip is a more downtempo mix for Carribean and chilled out vies. They are both versatile and sure to liven up any club.

Review: The Italian Library Songbook series is back with its second volume, offering a fresh take on hidden gems from Italy's soundtrack legends. This 7" sees beat-maker Moonbrew and composer Paolo Apollo Negri reimagine Piero Umiliani's 'Nel Villaggio,' originally featured on his 1975 library album Continente Nero. Side A, titled 'As If It Matters,' introduces a new dreamlike track where Tilde's delicate vocals float over a hypnotic marimba sample, blending with synths and a modern beat. Side B revisits the original instrumental, staying true to Umiliani's signature sound. With artwork by Luca Barcellona, this 7" is a beautiful tribute to the timelessness of Italian library music.

Review: Mukatsuku are long-time friends with Norway's Espen Horne so it makes sense they have moved to issue a couple of instrumentals following on from the quickly sold out success of a limited 7" he dropped on Wah Wah 45's in late 2023. This hand-numbered 45 features 'Bakeren' which in vocal form was a big hit with Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles amongst others. On the flip is a version of Bergen Sunrays', here renamed 'Rory's Sunrays', and featuring some great organ work from London-based musician Rory More.

Review: The Globeflower Masters Vol 1 is a new Mr Bongo release that has been put together with classic soundtracks, 70s library music and cinematic compositions in mind. It was assembled in summer 2020 by Brightonian musicians Glenn Fallows and Mark Treffel who drew on their arsenal of vintage synths, pianos, 'other fun toys' and all manner of drums, guitars and bass. The result is a soothing album that will work in the dead of winter as well as the light of the summer thanks to its warm sounds, lush productions and luxuriant arrangements. A worth CD for any collection.

He danced in Times Square theaters The Gaiety, Ramrod, and Big Top before moving into adult film. From 1979 through 1983 Garret starred in ten films, five of them for Joe Gage, including his lead role in 'Heatstroke'. Throughout this period of self-discovery, he wrote the suite of poems that became 'Hot Rod to Hell'. In 1982 he recorded 48 of the poems with haunting, atmospheric score by Man Parrish, who also did several soundtracks for Gage. The project was produced for the stage and for cassette by Manhattan illustrator Robert W. Richards. Richards calls 'Hot Rod', "a searing voyage through the labyrinths of modern male sexuality; it's geography ranging from porn theaters to back room bars to the intimacy of shared beds. Only a man born at exactly the moment in gay history that Garrett was could have lived through and conceived this work." Roy Garrett tells his stories of sex, violence, truth, and illusion, a visceral and personal a record as any of that moment in gay history pre-AIDS. Joe Gage, describes 'Hot Rod' as, "...sweet danger. This is a perceptive look at the underside of love. It is funny, scary, surprisingly moving and best of all, extremely acute in observing the specifics of the human condition." All poems have been carefully remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The records come housed in a jacket designed by Gwenael Rattke and includes an 44-page full color magazine with all 48 'Hot Rod' poems plus 44 previously unpublished poems from Garrett's archive. All proceeds from 'Hot Rod' will be donated to Housing Works, a New York City based non-profit fighting the twin crises of AIDS and homelessness.

Review: PAN drop another bundle of electronic goodness and as always, Bill Kouligas has got the aesthetics spot on. This time it's the recording from a Tate Modern performance by Florian Hecker - master of sound design and digital processing - and Mark Leckey. The LP is divided into two segments, "I" and "II", where experimentalism is given a new makeover thanks to some intricate sonic sculpturing which spans from drone through to docile noise and modular nuttiness. A truly wonderful escapade into the abyss of electronics that will delight any PAN fans.

Review: Habibi Funk cannot contain their excitement in sharing a second collection of deep grooves and unreleased songs from Algeria's Ahmed Malek soundtrack works. Ahmed Malek - who has often been compared to Ennio Morricone - recorded the majority of these songs in the 1970s and early 1980s, during which time his own native Algeria was in its film heyday. Malek became known for his combination of traditional music with jazz, psych-rock, and R&B, and yet did not find international recognition beyond his hometown; Habibi Funk recount the mission of tracking down Malek's sister to unearth a box full of master tapes, which formed the foundation of this miraculous new release salvage. As Ahmed says, "I didn't choose music, music chose me": it shows here.

Review: Larry Manteca's Zombie Mandingo album arrived back in 2013 and in the danced plus has only ever been available digitally. Now it makes its debut on wax and remains a bold listen that was devised as a soundtrack to a non-existent exploitation film. It fuses funk, jazz, and Afrobeat influences with plenty of niche cinematic references such as the zombies in Lucio Fulci's horrors and Umberto Lenzi's cannibalistic adventures. The resulting mash up is beguiling to say the least with horror-tinged exotica next to Fela Kuti rhythms and elements of Italian Library music and colourful psychedelia. A boundary pushing work to say the least.

Review: This is the first-ever reissue of Gianni Marchetti's 1978 LP Solstitium, which was originally released as part of RCA's "Original Cast" series in limited promo copies and has long been considered one of the most rare and enigmatic pieces of Italian library music. Library music was primarily created for television, radio and film but often yielded hidden gems that fused jazz, lounge and soul into storytelling vignettes of sounds. Marchetti's wonderful Solstitium is a prime example of innovation within this space which rightly remains a classic in the history of Italian music.

Review: Marie Guerin, or maybe you know her as Marie de la Nuit, is a sound artist who has explored field recordings, radio archives and "hertzian ghosts" for almost a quarter of a century since her debut in 2001. Her work blends voices, textures and ambient sounds that examine sound heritage and its preservation. Transportees is an electroacoustic composition that connects archaic and electronic trance and in doing so weaves a musical thread from Brittany to Tunisia. It follows a trance-like journey through recordings and oral traditions, all rooted in Guerin's passion for archives. The album reflects her fascination with capturing and preserving songs and transforming them into a soundscape that bridges past and present.
