Review: Wally Badarou's incredible impression on modern pop music is intrinsically linked to his work in Nassau at the legendary Compass Point studios. There, the Paris-born synth legend lent his talent to a staggering amount of legendary music, but his own solo works have a magic all their own. 1984's Echoes might be the best known of his records, but there's a surprise entry from 2001 which is known to the deep-digging heads at Be With as a legendary record in need of wider release. Colors Of Silence was originally conceived as a yoga-minded release, but it's easier to consider it as another trip into the fantasy worlds Badarou can conjure from his eloquent synth work, and now it finally has a vinyl release.

Review: Geoff Bastow's Music To Varnish Owls By might just win the title for best album name in history, but don't let that playful label fool youithis is serious library funk. If you're familiar with Bastow's work, it's probably through his disco gems like K.I.D.'s 'You Don't Like My Music' and 'Don't Stop.' Yet, this 1975 classic is the true starting point. Soulful and unfiltered, the tracks are ripe for sampling; think Madlib before Madlib. Forget that elusive L300 original and dive into this reissue instead.

Review: American funk band Breakwater is best known for their hit "Release The Beast," which gets a reissue treatment by Be With. Even if you don't know the name, you'll recognise the track's withering lead riff because it was sampled by Daft Punk for their iconic "Robot Rock". It's mad to think such a futuristic sound was created somewhere in Philly in 1979, but it was. The flip side houses the smooth and buttery "Let Love In", a feel good, deep cut funk gem with vocal harmonies, bulbous bass and hip swinging claps.

Review: Despite her 'Working Men's Club" roots, British variety entertainer Marti Caine actually made some surprisingly good records during her lifetime. 1981 album "Point of View" is arguably the best of the lot. Caine's soft-touch (and emotional vocals) take centre stage, though it's the rather left-of-centre musical mixture below - think rock-infused cosmic disco ("Love The Way You Love Me"), trippy dub disco ("Snowbird City"), shirts-off disco ("Can I Speak To The World Please") and a string of cuts that could arguably be described as Balearic - that makes the album an essential listen.

Review: American singer, songwriter and musician Robert "Bobby" Caldwell dropped several much loved albums across the r&b, soul and jazz spectrum from the 70s onwards. He was known for the versatility of his voice and most noted single 'What You Won't Do for Love' which was taken from this double platinum and self-titled debut album in 1978. Later in his career, Caldwell started singing standards from the Great American Songbook, wrote hits for the likes of Amy Grant and Peter Cetera and hip-hop heads will also know that Caldwell is a heavily sampled artist. This reissue on Be With is a great reminder of his talents.

Review: Bobby Caldwell is one of those singers who has spanned multiple generations, not least because plenty of his work has been sampled in the years since by notable hip hop artists. He arrived on the scene in the 70s and soon became known for his velvet smooth soul sounds but also the versatility of his voice. His biggest single came on his debut self-titled album which like this one is now being reissued by Be With. Cat In The Hat came two years later and eventually went on to become gold-certified in the US and platinum in Japan. It's a fine mix of seductive funk sounds from the US great.

Review: Some tempos are pivotal to certain genres and 140 is one of those when it comes to dubstep. For that reason it is the title of this fine on going All Stars series from DUPLOC. Volume four is another masterful one with all niches explored starting with the low-end wobble of Mob Killa's 'Hattori' which is a brilliantly moody and late night saunter through a desolate urban landscape. Oudjat's 'Losing Control' is just as menacing and dark, and Ego Death pairs to back further to lush echoing hits and warped synths that hang in the air on 'Run It.' The flip side offers three more sparse but impactful cuts of hefty 140 bass brilliance.

Review: Common is a giant of the hip-hop world and his eternally loved 1994 long player Resurrection is one of the best things he ever did. 'I Used To Love H.E.R.' is an iconic tune taken from it, and one that is said by many to be one of hip-hop's great ever tunes. It is so admired because of its great lyrical twist and is now on 7" for the first time ever. This vital rap record is timeless and a perfect personification of hip hop which finds Common lamenting what the genre became and how commercial it was after a mass influx of mainstream rap in the 90s. A gorgeous sample of George Benson's 'The Changing World' is the icing on the cake.

Review: The Tele Music catalogue follows a long tradition of library music mores; stock patterned album art and themed series included. Originally from 1973, Rhythmiques functions as one of the label's most iconic releases. Written entirely in collaboration between French composer and percussionist Pierre Dahan and synthesist Mat Camison, it features tense funk, blunted jazz and heavy breaks all the way. Review: A new spate of Tele Music library classics reissues from the 70s houses this one from 1976. Once more, legendary composer and drummer Pierre Alain Dahan hears his timely work reissued - this time in collaboration with his eternal guitar colleague Slim Pezin, a many-timed collaborator with Dahan. Contrasting to Dahan's many more experimental works, such as the prototypical 'Rhythmiques' album (which is far more out-there, almost primordial-sounding) 'Neo Rhythmiques' is an absolute killer of scorching, uptempo jazzy soul-funk, demonstrating what humanity as whole has achieved since, by harnessing said rhythmic primordium for its own funky ends.

Review: While it's a bit of a surprise to see Be With Records, a dusty-fingered imprint better known for soul, disco and Balearic beats, reissuing DJ Quik's fourth album, Rhythm-Al-Ism, in some ways it makes a lot of sense. For starters, the double LP, which first hit stores in 1998, is a masterpiece: a gloriously kaleidoscopic fusion of golden era hip-hop, boom-bap, R&B, swing, jazz and G-funk stacked to the rafters with killer samples and on-point flows from the now veteran DJ/producer. The album was not quite the commercial success first time round that it should have been, but it deserves to be as lauded as earlier albums from the likes of De La Soul, EPMD and a Tribe Called Quest. In a word: essential!

Review: Cleveland Eaton had an accomplished life as a jazz musician, whether throwing down on piano, saxophone, trumpet, tuba or bass, up to his passing in 2020. As well as recording for the legendary Black Jazz, in 1973 he also released this armour-plated heater on Gamble. The cover is something else, it must be said, but the grooves contained within will soon dispel any prior judgements. Review: The Tele Music archival reissues series continues with this rather cosmic LP from Michael Gonet, one of the many esteemed library musicians to have graced the label and library's many halls in the early 1970s. Phasing News Volume 1 captures his approach well; slow-burning synthesizers, electric pianos and percussion, coalescing into neat motifs for cosmic alien arrivals, depraved montages, and awestruck final scenes. Those harbouring soft spots for Tangerine Dream's soundtracks are likely be impressed by the likes of the 'Soul Cathedral' and 'Moon To Light' tracks, but a complete jazz-prog curveball is thrown come 'Light In The Rains', after which the album is never the same.

Review: Continuing Be With's library music reissues series is this latest callback to the rare 1979 album French composer and producer Michael Gonet, who, like many of his contemporaries, created futuristic and experimental sounds for TV, radio and film, working at the precipice of a new, transitional media age. Dripping from this bleeding edge comes twelve strange tracks for timpani, synth and odd time signature, occasionally dipping into styles ranging from synthpop, minimalism and funk. Choice weirdo segments include the forbidden-planetary 'Phasing Percussions' tracks and the dastardly instrumental-fonky 'Devil Dances'.

Review: Tommy Guerrero is a constantly insightful figure in the downtempo scene. In fact, everything about the man protrudes good vibes and a chilled, leaned-back sort of mood. As an important side note, he was one of the original skateboarders back in the 1980's, running wheelies and exporting the culture to mainland Europe, along with his connection to lounge music. Soul Food Taqueria is a 2003 album, originally out through the mighty Mo Wax, and now reissued finely on Be With. We love everything about this album, form its positive TOV, to the artwork and its seamless blend of hip-hop and ambient, a cocktail that still tastes more than fresh as of 2017. TO be honest, this is foundational gear, and it wouldn't be unfair to say that this sound has not progressed a whole lot since albums like these first dropped in the UK. Essential.

Review: Tommy Guerrero's sublime debut album Loose Grooves And Bastard Blues carved out his name as a musician, and followed hot on the heels of an already established skateboarding career. It's not often we can name an artist whose talents lend just as well to the axe as they do to the deck, but it's plain to see on this insouciant jazz/bossa nova collection: Guerrero is one dextrous bloke. With the skate career held firmly in mind, we can easily imagine these numbers as the backing cuts to a fish-eyed trickstyle video; it's a great testament to the pure joy of music-making too, with Guerrero insisting: "it was never meant to be released. I was just recording for the fun of it - still my fave. Oh so naive!"

Review: Guitarist, composer and skateboarder Tommy Guerrero hears several of his earliest albums reissued now via Be With, of which 2008's Return Of The Bastard was his fifth. Still evidently deep in the throes of recording for the pure fun of it, this fifteen-track album reflects a pure lyricless enjoyment that few other of Guerrero's contemporaries could ever hope to share. Perhaps it's the meditative truck of his earlier skate career that course-corrected his frame of mind to pure creative meditativeness; here driving noisy drum machines, lightly-amped two-tones, the occasional kalimba and faint vocals all collide for the perfect accompaniment to an implied visual narrative.

In fact, it was at the suggestion of a Japanese gallery owner that he got back in the studio to record what has long been regarded as an impossible-to-find Balearic gem. Hiett's reverb and delay-laden Peter Green style guitar passages take centre stage throughout, winding in and out of languid grooves and ambient electronics to create what some have called "the ultimate desert island disc" - a record of such lazy, sun-kissed beauty that it sounds tailor made for drowsy days waking up on the beach.

Review: The always excellent Be With turn their attention to Samuel Jonathon Johnson and his fantastic 1978 album "My Music", which was the only full length he put out. The smooth vibe you get from the cover art alone says a lot about the music the man recorded: steamy, downtempo soul, romantic disco and lots of strong laden gems to warm you and a loved one through. The well known "What The World Needs Now Is Love" is a slow motion soul soother, while "Sweet Love" is pure positivity and "You" brings gorgeous orchestral disco funk fusions that brim with vitality. His own libidinous spoken word vocals add loveable sleaze to "Just Us" and makes for one of many highlights.

Review: The KPM 1000 series is a seminal collection of library music titles from the golden era of the practice. Image was originally released in 1974, and it features such library heavyweight as Brian Bennett and Neil Richardson laying down exquisite themes that transcend their commercial intentions to become moments of pristinely produced musical bliss. There's a swooning romanticism to the likes of 'Paradise Island' which you'll likely want to rest in a while, while of course there's sampling potential in abundance on these sorts of release. Review: Steve Leach's Ocean Potion, set for reissue on Be With Records, is a hidden gem of Balearic beach-funk from 1976, featuring Leachiknown today as Seasick Steveiin his earlier incarnation. Originally released exclusively in France on Philips, this LP is a funky AOR and blue-eyed soul masterpiece, brimming with vibrant, pop-funk energy. Recorded with the Crystal Grass Orchestra, the album boasts a lush orchestral sound that perfectly complements Leach's smooth vocals and the rich harmonies of a stellar ensemble of backing singers. The supporting musicians are legends from the French music scene, including Don Ray as arranger and synth player, Marc Chantereau on percussion, Slim Pezin on guitar, Andre Ceccarelli on drums, Christian Padovan on bass, and Pierre Halation on flute. Their combined talents create a groove that is both immediate and infectious, making it hard to believe this record has remained relatively obscure. The reissue by Be With Records has been carefully remastered by Simon Francis, ensuring the sound quality is impeccable. Cicely Balston's expert cutting preserves the record's integrity, while the original sleeve artwork, featuring a topless Leach reclining on a piano-laden flatbed truck at the beach, has been beautifully restored. This long-overdue reissue brings Ocean Potion back to the spotlight, where it rightly belongs.

Review: New York-based multi-instrumentalist/producer/film composer Steve Moore's Lovelock project returns to woo us all once more with Washington Park. This is yet another unctuous suite of instrumentals that are best categorised as lounge music heightened with plenty of magical and exotic synth sounds. This time, Moore is in a more mellow mood than ever before with soothing melodies and gently unfolding arrangements that offer a cathartic place to hide, well away from the dark dystopian of modern day life. This might be an album that is low-key in terms of design, but it is certainly high impact emotionally.

Review: Sauveur Mallia's Spatial & Co. hears a well-deserved reissue on Be With, harkening back to the synth-drizzled French disco producer's creatively dreamy opus from 1979. With instrumental bits from the opener 'Future Vision' to the future-facing outback-ambience of 'Star Odyssey', this is a masterpiece of cosmic, electronic disco-funk that quite literally intends to transport its listeners through the cosmos (whether said journey is literally undertaken via an actual rocketship, or simply remains in the listener's drug-altered mind, is up to them).

Review: Here comes a fresh 12" containing four remixes of the song 'Call A Wave' by Malcolm McLaren and The Bootzilla Orchestra. The original was released in 1989 as part of McLaren's album Waltz Darling, which was an early example of the 'collaborative studio album' popular at the time, and fused classical music with elements of then-contemporary dance music styles, such as his brand of downtempo-ish post-punk / industrial - a true McLaren mode. The newer remixes that feature here come from the likes of DFC and Mark Moore and William Orbit (responsible for the Orbital mix rather than the Hartnoll brothers) and are no less sludgey, Balearic and chuggy as the original loom-bird-laden track. Two new stripped-back versions also appear.

The LP opens with 'The Uninvited One,' where serene arpeggiated synths intertwine with sweeping strings and plucked harp, creating a mystical atmosphere. The title track escalates into dark, brooding territory with a blend of synths, piano, and strings. 'Evolutionary Steps' showcases epic synthwave with expansive strings and driving rhythms, while 'The Icarus Feather' and 'Daily Affirmations' offer cinematic and meditative textures, respectively. Review: The Nucleus crew laid down a superb body of work throughout the seventies. The one and only Madlib often pillages it for samples as a big fan of the group's dark and broody sound. A number of their best records are in the process of being reissued now and Under The Sun is the latest. It is packed with expressive sax sounds, dense drums and whirring synths that still sound way ahead of their time. The whole thing has been lovingly re-mastered from the original analogue tapes too, for extra audio enjoyment.

Review: Be With are busy reissuing a number of Nucleus albums and Alleycat sure is one of their best. It is packed with stone cold rhythms as well as having a red hot sleeve. The band put it out in 197 and it was their last for the Vertigo label, all meticulously produced by Jon Hiseman. It's as good as any of their work with its funk fusions of prog, jazz and rock all ageing brilliantly well. There are big riff-laden tunes, cop-funk chases and more lush and laidback pieces that will have you deep in the groove. It has all been remastered from original tapes so sounds as good as ever.

Review: Headed up by the revered trumpeter and visionary composer Ian Carr, Nucleus have penned many a seminal album and Elastic Rock certainly is one of them. It was a real milestone for the jazz-rock fusion scene and marked a stunning debut in 1970 that has been hard to find ever since. Saxophonist Brian Smith, guitarist Chris Spedding - who wouold later go on to produce the Sex Pistols' first recordings - drummer John Marshall, bassist Jeff Clyne and sax, oboe and pianist Karl Jenkins all brought energy and invention in equal measure on this one with cuts like the title track offer lovely electric blues, '1916' featuring heavy drums and melancholic horns and 'Striation' being more serene. Be With have remastered this reissue from the original tapes.

Review: Not to be confused with the US electro outfit of the same name, Nucleus was - as many readers will know - a pioneering British jazz-rock outfit helmed by Ian Carr, whose releases frequently drew on a wide palette of influences (think funk, soul, pyschedelic and progressive rock). They made a lot of great albums during the 1970s, though few are quite as inspired as 'We'll Talk About It Later', a wonderfully laidback and atmospheric 1971 set that has now been given the reissue treatment by the consistently impressive Be With Records. The many highlights include - but are in no way limited to - the bluesy, slow-motion shuffle of 'We'll Talk About It Later', the wah-wah guitar sporting summer bliss of 'Sun Child', the gently unfurling brilliance of 'Oasis' and the pleasingly heavy jazz-rock pulse of 'Ballad of Joe Pimp'.

Review: First released on Vertigo in 1975, the growling basslines and irresistible rolling grooves of Nucleus emerge in full force for Snakehips Etcetera - an infectiously energetic record that sounds as though it has barely aged a day. Opening onto the unctuous grooves of 'Rat's Bag', where a jubilant trumpet solo takes centre stage, this track instantly takes us into the heart of Nucleus' entirely distinctive terrain. On the B-side, the title track emerges at a slower pace and with synthesised elements moving to the fore - this is a release that perfectly demonstrates how electronics and instrumentation can be combined to reach new heights. With original copies of this release proving virtually impossible to score, we're thankful Be With have gifted the world with a much-needed re-release.
