Review: Reissue time! As New York jungle pillars Liondub International celebrate 10 years they've put together some of the hardest hitting bangers of their previous "Jungle To The World" collections on this powerful piece of wax. All the right vibes in all the right places, these all sound future fresh: DJ Hybrid's swashbuckling Dread bass backflips on "Special Request", the absolute bashy bless from Horace Andy and Marcus Visionary on "Sound Killer", the warmer reggae soul bubbles of Visionary's "Hustlin" and Truespirit's purring late 90s two-step homage "Deep In The Jungle". No filler in sight whatsoever.

  2. Pola & Bryson - "Cold Love" (5:00)
  3. Document One - "Like This" (4:55)
  4. Monrroe - "Horizon" (feat Jinadu) (4:51)
Review: Friction's Shogun Audio return to update their "Shuriken" collection of classics from their vaults for a first-time, special collector's vinyl press. While previous editions have dug deep into the label's full repertoire, this one captures a much more recent snapshot of the label and the deeper sound it's been celebrating in the last few years. Friction takes the lead with the subtle, sultry charms of "For This" with Liam Bailey from the label's recent 15 year anniversary collection, before Pola & Bryson's 2019 chiller "Cold Love" raises the cosmic pressure. Flip for some superb double bass-slapping funk from Document One in the form of "Like This" before man-of-the-moment Monrroe shuts down the EP with the belting star-gazer soul of "Horizon". Stunning.

Only You (12")
Cat: FOKUZ 076. Rel: 22 Sep 15
  1. Macca & Loz Contreras - "One Touch" (Technimatic remix) (5:15)
  2. Silence Groove - "Only You" (5:59)
Review: The words 'Technimatic' and 'remix' should be enough to whet most junglists' whistles right here... Taking Macca and Loz's 2014 breezy, break-fuelled roller and stripping back into something a little more delicate and hypnotic, it's straight out of the remix rule book. Flip for a brand new original from Polish player Silence Groove. Conjuring up similar feels to Brookes Brothers "Tear You Down" but with heavier emphasis on the orchestral sample, it's coated in so much emotion you may have to provide post-drop counselling to the more sensitive members of your dancefloor.

Cat: SKELR 18. Rel: 26 Nov 19
  1. Madcap - "Warning" (5:21)
  2. Madcap - "Empire Dub" (4:41)
  3. DJ Trax - "Alien Forces" (6:43)
  4. DJ Trax - "Can't Stop Won't Stop" (7:05)
Review: Now here's a pairing of junglist minds. Madcap has been chipping away at the game since 19longtime, each track expressing deep roots but a heavy, skin-burning contemporary production punch. DJ Trax is a certified pioneer who's been there since the very beginning. Here they share a 12 on the equally legacy-rich label Skeleton and Madcap takes the lead: "Warning" punches with stacks of space and a swing so broad you can hear every percussive hit perfectly while "Empire Dub" gets even more roomy and jazzy. Meanwhile on the flip Trax continues the break craft. "Alien Forces" combines deep Bristol/Goodlooking atmospheres and Essex rave drums while some serious snake-charming juju with the apache break can be found on "Can't Stop Won't Stop." Don't stop.

Under The Earth
Cat: UM 024. Rel: 08 Oct 19
  1. Under The Earth (6:03)
  2. Switch It (5:08)
Review: Heavy co-lab business, Bristol boys Mako and Mikal tag-up for a serious lesson on Mako's Utopia. "Under The Earth" takes the lead and you can spot the breaks as they fly by, all switching and cutting almost every beat at points before suddenly dropping out of the mix and leaving you in a bewilderingly oceanic breakdown. "Switch It", meanwhile, lives up to its name with a fantastically strange beat. Kinda 4/4 in spirit, there's a new sound lurking in this which is only just being explored here. Switch? Completely flip things beyond belief more like.

Cat: KS 003. Rel: 23 Jun 20
  1. Manix - "The Feeling" (5:54)
  2. Foul Play - "Black Sun" (Skeleton Army remix) (5:19)
  3. Denham Audio - "Mercury Tint" (4:50)
  4. Mani Festo - "Spiral" (6:34)
Review: Relooping the generations; John Morrow (AKA Skeleton Army AKA 4 Horsemen Of The Apocalypse AKA Foul Play) serves up a collection that nods in both directions. 4 Hero's Marc Clair takes the lead under his old school hardcore alias Manix. Bouncy and loaded with positivity, it sets the scene before Morrow remixes his 23 old Foul Play track "Dark Horse" into a slinky, technoid breakbeat jam. Flip for some future flavours: Denham Audio looks to early Good Looking for inspiration on "Mercury Tint" while Mani Festo goes wild on a percussive dnb finale. Smile or kill trying.

Review: MC Fava releases his debut artist EP and he's doing it in pure style as he recruits some of the most respected producers in the game: Logistics, Nymfo, LAOS, Seba and Klute. It doesn't get much better than that, and neither do the vibes; the soft harmonies on "Transatlantic", the yearning poignancy of "We Lose", the total uplift and emotion of "Waiting", the star gazing thrust of "Hearts Wander" and the darker drive of the almighty finale "Another Me" all comprise and fuse to paint the clearest picture of Fava's unique musical style to date. Let's hope we see more.

Review: Who Dem Sound smash it again as J Robinson dons his Meditator alias to link with the mighty Ink. The result needs to be heard to be understood. A nod to the Goodlooking and early Creative Source influence, everything about "Kinghtsdale" twinkles and shimmers in that silky, rolling way that's half way between jazz school and Jupiter. Need a little more celestial oomph? Flip for the Smokers remix. Trust us, this is every bit as beautiful as the marbled vinyl suggests.

  1. Mefjus & Icicle - "Contemporary"
  2. Mefjus - "Dissuade"
Review: Drum&BassArena award winning Austrian Mefjus proves his hype once again with two outrageously heavy cuts. "Contemporary" (a collaboration with the equally talented Icicle) has already become an early seasonal highlight, all sheet metal sound design and mind-bending dynamics. "Dissaude" is heavier again; tub-thumping drama with a cinematic sense of drama, it's contemporary neuro on a Phace & Misanthrop level. Something tells us more awards will find their way onto the Mefjus trophy cabinet in the near future.

  1. Regeneration (5:36)
  2. Research Methods (5:12)
  3. Always For Tomorrow (5:06)
Review: Now this is how you start a label in the new decade. Following the carnage of Cocktail Party Effect's release late last year comes the label boss Monic with three far-out adventures, two of which are of a heavily junglised nature. "Regeneration" comes first, a brass-melting riot that sits somewhere between Paradox and Bass Clef in its spirit and attitude. "Research Methods" is more of a drum & bass design, all steppy and paranoid and nodding heavily in the direction of No U-Turn. Last but not least we have the jazzy halftime drum odyssey "Always For Tomorrow". Don't wait until tomorrow for this one.

  4. Drum Cypha - "Bad Hair Day" (5:23)
Review: Now this is how you do a 002... Following up their almighty launch release earlier this year, Bournemouth darkside imprint Rotation Audio let rip with another heavy multi-artist release, this time bringing more respected and hugely talented acts into the fray. Mono follows up his Shiro release with the crushing bleakness strikes and slams of "Machiavellian" before Slider returns to the label with Expose for the raw jungle breakbeat slammer "Dark World" followed by the late 90s Virus style snub-nosed pressure cooker "Charge" from Sicknote and Dissect. Last but not least Drum Cypha gives us some much needed grooming tips on "Bad Hair Day" by way of ravey stabs and heavy hardcore grit.

  1. RunDos (5:12)
  2. Night Ride (5:33)
  3. The Duke (5:19)
  4. Tanaka (5:56)
Review: Under the mSdoS alias, Chris Kouzellis has released some fine material over the last seven or eight years. He's appeared on countless imprints in that time, so it's rather a surprise to find that "RunDOS" is the first time he's popped up on Tempo. The title track sets the tone, with the Greek producer peppering a crunchy, jungle-influenced drum track with lashings of tasty liquid style chords, melodies and piano flourishes. He takes a similar approach on the tougher and more outwardly energetic "Night Ride", where ghostly chords and booming bass help to create a suitably clandestine mood. Over on side B, he doffs a cap to Rephlex Records on the braindance/electro/D&B fusion of "The Duke", before unfurling a flute-laden liquid roller called "Tanaka". Tasty stuff all told.

  4. Vintage (Ontology Hard N' Mellow remix part 2) (7:16)
Review: Old skool jungle flavours get put through the mincer of 21st century studio techniques on this double 12" pack from Mike Symiakos. The title tracks uses raging Amen breaks - all smashed up and re-built in wonderous new shapes, of course - some lovely sound system sirens, smooth synths and a reggae MC adding his echoing textures to create junglist heaven. The red, gold and green rasta credentials continue over into 'Guru Meditation', definitely one for fans of early 4Hero and Reinforced releases, and the two remixes of 'Vintage'. Everything here is firing on all cylinders, but it's executed with plenty of dynamics and technological dexterity.

Review: Last spotted shelling us with his 'Vintage Dubs', self-styled liquid gangster My Symiakos returns with some foundation fire. Four cuts heavy, 'Oldskool Flavours' is a veritable rave rainbow with pots of gold at the end of every tune. The title track warms us up at 160 with its dubwise beat that suddenly turns inside out with the help of some razor-sharp amens. Elsewhere 'Wind It Up Selecta' brings the breakbeat bashment with large helpings of chaos, 'Up For Tha Business' is choppy and hectic it wouldn't go amiss in a Remarc set while 'Rub A Dub Style' concludes affairs with more insane drum science, classic rave vocal samples and synths so beautiful you'll swear you heard them in a dream.

Review: Snappy snappy! J.Robinson's King K Rool series hits a big fat eight with this massive US/Norway free-for-all as young Nashville producer Ontology and rising Norwegian junglist Msymiakos get busy with a whole selection of originals and remixes. The twisted amens of "Serious Business" set the tone before we get progressively heavier as the EP rolls out. Highlights include the sultry soul of Ontology's remix of "Need It Bad", the dreamy-yet-slamming feels of "Take Your Socks Off First" and the straight-to-business ragga stamps of Msymiakos's remix of "Mash Down". In a while crocodile.

Review: UK meets Finland meets Poland by way of Germany: Alphacuts have recruited a crack team of forward-thinkers for their latest dispatch. Ridgway pushes the button with a star-lit halftime hybrid that borders on pure trance such is it euphoric width and scope. Deeper again Out Of Fuel provide the most junglistic cut of the EP with echoes of Photek in the drums and spatial dynamic. On the B: Elemental balances an unforgiving experimental aesthetic with a bassline that bounces with London pride and we finalise with Material's DBR-style doomy halftime roller "Tons Dub" that was tailor made for deep mix pleasure. No swift cuts needed here.

Review: It would be fair to say that Macc and Loz Contreras have made something a splash in the D&B scene since first joining forces back in 2013. It's also true that few contemporary producers are capable of delivering such musically rich, soul-flecked liquid funk. Their trademark sound - rolling breaks, sparkling electronic, carefully selected samples and melodies aplenty - is much in evidence throughout this fine debut album, which gathers together both previously released singles and previously unheard fare. Highlights come thick and fast, from the disco-sampling dancefloor bliss of "Better World" and the sun-soaked brilliance of bass-heavy carnival roller "Wanna Be Your Lover", to the sub-heavy assault that is "Switch". A handful of remixes from other artists - including liquid soul mate S.P.Y - complete a quality package.

Review: It's another Headz special! Bristol's finest Utopian, the man like Mako, delivers his debut solo album and it's every bit as deep, detailed and sense-slapping as you'd expect it to be. From the brilliantly brutalist "One Reality" to the rave-melting halftime switching "Flip It" via the bouncy harmonics of "Hoxton Home" and the depth plunge bassline and Subtitles-style rawness of the stripped back arrangement on "Offline", like all Metalheadz albums - and indeed Mako productions - this is a properly considered, thoughtful and detailed body of work. Essential.

Review: Makato is often cited as one of the pioneering founders of Japan's drum & bass scene. He's now up to his sixth studio album and it finds his airy, rolling, sweet flowing beats all present and correct. "Tomodachi Sessions" derived from a series of collaborations with close friends who have all played a part in his 25 year career. DJ Marky, S.P.Y, Bop and MC Conrad all feature and lend their own personalities to an album that offers celebratory hands in the air tracks like "Shine On Through" next to more late night dancers like "Transparent" and melodic explorations like "Show Me How You Feel".

Review: When it comes to making soulful drum and bass and liquid funk, few are quite as good as Japanese D&B legend Makoto Shimizu. Given his status and track record, it's little surprise to find him finally popping up on Hospital Records - a label that seems a natural home for his particular brand of shimmering, summery breakbeat science. Salvation is his sixth solo studio album, and may well be his strongest to date. Packaged with guest appearances from a variety of like-minded producers and honey-throated vocalists - think DRS, Pete Simpson and Karina Ramage - the 14-track set is little less than a kaleidoscopic romp through soaring D&B, piano-laden liquid rollers, soul-soaked jungle and spacey, jazz-flecked dancefloor escapades.

Review: Since gate crashing the drum and bass party back in 2009, Mefjus (AKA Austrian producer Martin Schober) has consistently delivered high quality material for a range of labels, most notably Critical Recordings. This time out he's operating on Vision Recordings, offering up a second album, some four years on from releasing his well-received debut full-length. After opening with the foreboding, scene-setting cyber-ambient of "Manifest", the long-serving DJ/prodiucer proceeds to lay down a rip-snorting selection of peak-time D&B cuts marked out by dark and throbbing neruofunk style wobble basslines, clandestine textures, creepy orchestration and punchy, occasionally rolling breakbeats that occasionally tend towards the old school. There are also occasional blasts of experimental D&B - see "Ringshifter" and the stabbing "Work It" - and hard-to-define bass music fusions containing notably weighty low-end motifs.

Review: Metrik has long been one of Hospital Records' most intriguing artists - a producer whose weighty, punchy and futuristic take on drum and bass draws on a wider palette of influences (think Depeche Mode, Bjork, synth-wave, the Prodigy, film soundtracks and so on) than many of his contemporaries. These varied influences have inspired his work for some time, though rarely quite as obviously as on new album "Ex Machina", his third LP. Bold, heavily electronic and undeniably rugged, the set includes a range of instrumentals and vocal tracks rich in sparkling synth sounds, aggressive riffs, booming basslines and, of course, bustling D&B rhythms. Highlights include "Closer", the trance-influenced "We Are The Energy", the dreamy ambient flex of "Ascension" and the simmering, string-laden beauty of "Shadows".

Review: It may have appeared too late in the year to make any "best of 2019" lists, but Murdock's debut album is as vibrant, colourful and kaleidoscopic as any drum & bass set we've heard this year. He sets the tone with the rushing, celebratory soulfulness of the title track, before giddily skipping through radio-ready D&B-pop anthems ("Let It Go"), wobble bass-propelled sing-alongs ("Holding On"), rumbling instrumentals (Roni Size hook-up "Double Dutch"), off-kilter experimentalism (the eight-bit synths and post-dubstep beats of "Panic Attack"), moody hip-hop ("Dark Cloud", featuring Dynamite MC) and razor-sharp neuro-funk (bonus cut "Alien").
