Review: The New York-based (U)nity is made up of Michael Valeanu, Axel Tosca Laugart, Chris Smith, Max Cudworth and Amaury Acosta. They formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore Afro-Cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. They say they've been influenced by everyone from Chucho Valdes to Art Blakey to Led Zeppelin to Kendrick Lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. "Guarapachanga" is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at The New School. It's derived from the style known as guarapachangeo - the most advanced form of Cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. On this recording, (U)nity is graced with a guest performance by Grammy Award winner Pedrito Martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on Cuban music. Martinez is also a priest in the Yoruba religion and a historian of Cuban culture.
Over its eight and a half minutes, "Guarapachanga" twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from Latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. The whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the Afro-Cuban essence that is the band's lifeblood. The white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous DJs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. If you didn't know "Guarapachanga" was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a Loft classic; yet it's also as fresh and exciting as anything you'll hear this year.

Review: After spending last autumn working alongside Rampa and Adam Port (see the trio's excellent "You Are Safe" album on Keinemusik), Andre "&Me" Boadu has enjoyed a quiet 2018. In fact, this outing on Pampa is his first release of 2018. He begins with the atmospheric and undulating delight that is "In Your Eyes", a slightly jazz-flecked rolling deep house excursion that brilliantly builds energy throughout. Boadu accomplishes this using two contrasting melodic elements: fluid piano solos and a foreboding electronic motif that increases in prominence and intensity as the track progresses. Over on side B, "As Above So Below" is an altogether deeper proposition, with hushed, cymbal heavy percussion, tech-tinged drums and a spacey, undulating synthesizer melody combining to create a hazy late night mood.

Review: London's 1-800 Girls brings cleanly garage and bright breaks to his All My Thoughts label, riffing on the combo of infectious aural hooks and brutalist sonics fashionable among the present chart doyens of UK dance music and techno. 'How I Feel' sounds like an innocent admission of affection in techno-garage form, pairing the flunky inter-jabs of 2-step garage with the cute-aggressive seethes of a repetitious sampled vox; the track centres on a nostalgic, airtight sequence of parapractic phonemes, onto which the listener may project their longings and amours. 'Signal' embraces both big beats and biomech squeaks verging on sports-whistles, while 'Like You Do' returns for a comparatively brooding burbler. Finally, 'Guy's Salmon' rounds things off on a dense sequence of yeahs and ohs, as ever building up a slow-burn of cool wonderment and openness.

Review: Since making their name with the bleep/loved up deep house fusion of "Low Frequency Overload" back in 1990, British duo 100 Hz have continued to deliver occasional 12" singles. Their latest EP, Immersive, is full of rich, saucer-eyed deep house treats. Highlights include the darting, near Balearic synths and dream house style grooves of "Rio",the boompty-influenced cut and thrust of "Rub Tub (Edit)", where jammed-out jazz synths cluster around a killer funk bassline, and the ultra-deep, but suitably energetic "Whiskey Pineapple". This latter track is propelled forwards by a relentless bassline, crunchy drum machine percussion, and some foreboding melody lines.

Review: Domenico Rosa and Riccardo's Imprints label has regularly delivered the goods since making its debut back in 2013. Predictably, this multi-artist affair is also rather impressive. French twosome Charonne is arguably the star of the show, delivering two tidy tracks: the bouncy and far-sighted "Vice City", where '80s synth-funk style motifs and acid-funk electronics ride a bustling groove, and the similarly-inclined, elastic tech-house-funk of "Formule Stardust". Elsewhere, turn-of-the-90s survivor 100Hz delivers a fine chunk of woozy deep house/funky techno fusion and Cobert delivers some spacey and chunky, mid-set tech-house. In other words, all four tracks are playable and worthy of your attention.

Review: Heels & Souls Recordings proudly hit release number nine, revisiting mid-90s Toronto to reissue two blissfully Balearic house gems from 100th Monkey. The story of 100th Monkey is intertwined with The Boomtang Boys, a production trio and record label that delivered many iconic Canadian productions. In the early 90s, brothers Tony and Paul Grace, after releasing a 12" as Fun Wow, teamed up with classically trained pianist Rob DeBoer, creating the perfect synergy of inspiration and musical knowledge. This collaboration birthed The Boomtang Boys and their unique sound.Toronto's vibrant scene at the time, filled with producers, raves, and top-tier labels like Stickmen, Hi-Bias, and DNH, influenced their style. Paul, a record store buyer and DJ, drew inspiration from the UK, leading to a variety of sounds produced under different monikers. Their sole release as 100th Monkey, a cherished 12" from 1994, stands out as a Canadian gem. 'Raindance' is a hit of summertime heat, a mid-tempo Balearic deep house track with shuffling hats, a spine-tingling bassline, African vocal samples, dreamy strings, and goose-bumping chords. 'Nyika Nyika' picks up the pace, shimmering with arps and looped African vocal samples, making it perfect for sunsets and dancefloors alike. On the B-side, Manuel Darquart's remix of 'Raindance' injects new energy, adding steamy synth lines and a salacious sax. Finally, the unreleased 'River Ride' from 1996, with its floating pads, trickling arps, laidback breakbeat, and grooving bassline, sees the light of day, offering perfect warm-up or warm-down material. A top reissue.

Review: In our eyes, Patrice Scott's Sistrum Recordings represents everything that we like about deep house. That is not to say the label is limited at one single sound or genre, but it's more about its approach to finding the right artists to fit with its aesthetics. This latest head to head by the 12 To 30 trio - Bacanito, Giovanni Randisi and Tazz - is another stunning escapade into the deepest and most cerebral shades of house music, and the opener "Timed Reality" makes use of the genre only for its tempo, preferring instead to deliver a sublime wall of pads, airy synths and sci-fi effects. "Parallel Strings" reminds us of Theo Parrish in his mid-'2000s mode, but "Altered Possibility" is the real winner on here; a warm slice of SH 101 noise is just what we need for our low-end necessities.

Review: Hot Piroski Records have been on something of a hiatus for the last year or so but now make a welcome return with a new EP series. This collaborative affair is the result of an epic journey in an old Mercedes from London to Gunjur and finds label head Robin 12Tree working with The Gambia and Bongo Koi as Gambian Disco Express. 'Enlightenment is Now' marks their first release on Hot Piroski Records and it comes with vocals from Gambian mystic Rev. Joseph N'Gole, recorded on the banks of the River Gambia. This one has already been hammered by Psychemagik, Pete Herbert, and Severino from Horse Meat Disco so it comes quality assured.

Review: Styrax's alphabetized Specials series reaches its fourth volume (or Styrax I / Styrax J to use the correct parlance) with four typically sumptuous examples of archival house. 154's delightfully fuzzy "Daze" opens proceedings, which will cause much misty eyed reminiscing for anyone who indulged in the 2004 Delsin released album Strike it first appeared on. Alongside it, Damon Lamar's luxuriously paced "Rising Sun" is borrowed from Tetrode Music, its intoxicating swirls of kaleidoscopic textures every bit as potent as when it first surfaced. The flipside tracks are naturally in a similar vein with some 2003 bounciness from Claro Intelecto complemented by "Dat America", Lowtec's 1999 jam for the Playhouse imprint.

Review: Some magical - and ridiculously limited - Prince remix action here, as Athens of the North house band East Coast Love Affair give their take on the Purple One's 1984 song '17 Days' (which, fact fans, originally appeared on the B-side of 'When Doves Cry'). They've done a great job, too, taking Prince's live vocals and piano from the 'Piano & A Microphone 1983' recording and wrapping them around a rolling groove that sits somewhere between disco and the more organic side of deep house. It's basically a club-ready take that (rightly) treats the late, great musician's original with due care and reverence. It comes backed by a handy acapella for those who've always dreamed about getting busy in the mix with Prince's wonderful vocals. There are only 200 of these around, so don't sleep!

Review: French producer 1977 aka Matsa, delivers a bold and subtle blending of ambient textures, deep pads and raw rhythms perfectly mixed with some minimal sequences. In Brief, a fine and complete piece of electronic music, made with constant attention to detail. Starting out with the hauntingly emotive ambience of "Tkg" where sub bass pulsations lurk between the crackling of surface noise, pitch shifted vocals and transcendental chilling pads, then the dusty and emotive deep house of "Soso" which is informed equally by Fred P as it is by the likes of Lawrence. On the flip, there's the rather Fred P sounding "Mondat" which is the highlight a smoothly emotive deep house number while "Toine" gets dubbier and subterranean in a way that UntilMyHeartStops fans will appreciate.

Review: Atmospheric Existence Recordings keep up their annual release rate with label boss Miles Sagnia inviting 1Dan and Bittersuite to join him on only the third release. Newcomer 1Dan opens proceedings with the sprawling soft machine funk flex of "Foundations", a track driven by gutter deep bass movements, steppy syncopation and rich sonic textures that no doubt helped influence the title of the EP. On the flip Bittersuite step forward with the upwards acid dub pressure of "Squeeze In" which steadily accrues an acidic overtone before a delightful left turn into a futuristic mechano soul rhythmic thrust. It's left to Sagnia to provide the final moment with the tightly relentless throb of "Can We Heal Them" that slowly reveals its inner acid brilliance.

Review: The Jungle referencing Valley Of The Shadows series from Hague outpost Creme Organization was launched earlier this year with the aim of halting some of the fragmentation that afflicts the underground. Given this first 12" has experienced severe pressing delays, maybe the underground should crowd source the financing of some fresh vinyl pressing plants? Regardless of that VOTS001 finds Creme joining forces with their Amsterdam-based compadres to present a two track transmission from 2AMFM, aka Nation pair Tadd Mullinix and D'Marc Cantu. The tumbling Axel F goes Jakbeat vibes of "Starfist Lazerbeam" are particularly good here! Watch out for future collaborations with LIES and upstarts Berceuse Heroique.

Review: By their standards, Danish duo 2 Bit Crew enjoyed a very productive 2014, releasing well-received singles on Deso, Luvdancin' and their own self-titled imprint. Here they return to the latter with three more sumptuous chunks of tactile, arms-spread deepness. The untitled A-side arguably hits home hardest, with sweet, delay-laden loops and delicious riding a house tempo Motor City techno groove. The second track, nestled at the beginning of side B, seemingly shimmers with positive intent. The duo opts for Chez Damier style bass and a touch of vintage US house bump, while smothering the groove in darting synths and huggable electronics. Finally, the third track goes even deeper, delivering the dreamy tech-house equivalent of a long, sloppy kiss.

Review: Bringing a dose of irreverence to the normally po-faced deep house scene, fresh-faced producers 2 Bit Crew make good their second release with a pair of cheeky tracks that remind us it's about having fun in the midst of serious grooves. The beat, bassline and swing on "Wanna See You Pop" may be first-rate New Jersey house music, but the vocal is an unlikely suspect that winds up defining the track in an off-kilter manner. Likewise on "Gonna Let You Go" the diva vocal cries take the limelight, and make for a heated dancefloor message that should tug at the soul and the hips without hesitation.

Review: The 2 Bit Crew have injected a much needed breath of fresh air to the UK house sphere over the last four or five years, and it's just a nice sensation to hear something that at least tries to be different and more provocative with the tools at its disposal. Here we have a remix EP of three of their cuts, the first in the form of a break-ridden deep house ride from Central Toast on "Peanut Butter & Jam", the second another break-heavy house experiment by Manmade Distanza on "Hoop Dreams", and finally a mesmeric sort of tribal house nugget by DJ Sports Emotional on "Baaam". TIP.
