Prometal Fan Decor Only Product
Cat: KOMPAKT 442. Rel: 21 Feb 22
Fan (4:51)
You Know What's Gone (6:11)
This Is For Decor Only (7:43)
Review: Barnt returns for a weighty, new wavey three-tracker on Kompakt, not quite straying from his trademark minimal tech style, but nevertheless working in novel elements. 'This Is For The Decor Only' is a glistening ambient trance cut, working in detuned leads and melodic 'woahs' (woah indeed), while 'You Know What's Gone' recalls everything from mid-80s body music, new romantic dance, and medieval music. 'Fan' is the ambient closer, revealing the producer's musical talents far beyond that of mere dance music. As Barnt says, he wanted to touch on a "ceremonial, emotional, grand spirit", and he's achieved just that.

Millennium Melopella (1:40)
Review: The icy techno sounds of Cologne's Barnt make their way across Europe here to Studio Barnhus's Swedish bunker. Across five fresh cuts, he brings plenty of experimental flair but also some playful rhythms to a forward-thinking EP that sounds like little else. 'Aqua Melopella' is an unsettling opener with glistening synths scurrying like ants over a sparse rhythm, 'Aqua Breeze' establishes a marching beat and 'Aqua Bass' brings twanging synths and frosted loops that keep you on your toes. 'Millennium Silver' is another tune blend of dystopian synth sounds and distorted lines that speak of human destruction and last of all 'Millennium Melopella' offers moments of ambient reflection.

Review: Batu has proven himself hugely capable of making a wide range of music. He might be best known for his perfect techno designs but here delves further into the world of ambient. Across four tracks he explores a number of moods with painterly synth work that is detailed with gentle percussion, gorgeous keys, and in the case of 'Flown,' jazzy splashes of cymbal. 'Half Speed' is idk a slow awakening on a distant planet. 'The Fifth' brings more bright and energy synth motifs and 'Seams' is a soothing lullaby. A beautifully escapist listen.

The Lake EP

The Lake (6:06)
The Lake (Ambient reprise) (5:26)
Twilight (8:09)
Review: Michigan producer John Beltran is a master of atmosphere and emotion. His ambient has been used for countless seminal TV shows, he's been cited as an inspiration to Four Tet and has put out key albums on labels like Delsin and Peacefrog. Here he is in a distinctively club-focussed mood, but the synths still very much speak to your heart. "The Lake" is pure Motor City techno soul, and the ambient reprise allows you to wallow in his pads even more. "Twilight" then bustles with shimmering metal hits while pixelated keys drift about like a million fire flies in a warm night sky. Lush.

Euphoria 1 (6:47)
Euphoria 3 (6:01)
Euphoria 7 (8:18)
Review:
Furthur Electronix sub label Altered Sense presents a new release by Bot1500 aka Shinichi Kobayashi, who returns to the label family after 2019's English Beach EP. Fittingly titled 'Euphoria', across three versions we hear Kobayashi's impressive take on intelligent, Motor City inspired techno. The contemplative futurist soul of 'Euphoria 7' transforms on part 3, which really calls to mind the heyday of early '90s IDM on seminal imprints such as Warp and Peacefrog. On the flip, part 1 bridges the gap between the two previously heard versions, picking up the pace again but backed by a foggy lo-fi house rhythm. It proves to be the perfect backdrop for the track's melancholic yet bittersweet expression. Breathtaking.

A Nation, No Flag (2:57)
Review: It's been a while since we heard from London's bass innovator Brassfoot. In fact, this is his first new EP since a great album back in 2022 and it offers up trippy electronics of the highest order. 'Cat Riddles & Ginnels Juice' is a murky world of lo-fi sounds, scratchy drums and wiry sonics that is pure scuzz. 'Double Speak' is another caustic and rusty melange of rhythmic motifs and fuzzy synth decay while 'Kinda Vicarious ' is all twisted church bells and otherworldliness. 'Earthiopia' is hyperdriven experimental minimalism and 'A Nation, No Flag' closes this most avant-garde EP with more eerie urban electronics. A truly out there EP.

Attraction
Review: The interesting cross pollination of sounds and ideas currently gestating around the Avian and Mira camps throws up its most intriguing proposition yet in Burma Camp. This is the newly adopted alias of Nicholas Wood, frontman of The KVB, a duo recently referred to as "the son and daughter of reverb" and one of this year's breakthrough acts. Wood has previous form with Mira, having collaborated with Ventress on his recent turn as Worn, and Repulsion finds him sinking deep into the realm of droning industrial delay across three experimental excursions. The influence of Downward boss Regis is apparent throughout, with the vicious, industrial techno grot of "Isa" standing out.

Review: Gacha Bakradze is back on the Barcelona based Lapsus Music label with a second outing in the form of his new album 'Obscure Languages.' Hailing from Georgia's capital Tbilisi, Bakradze is one of his homeland's most famous dance music exports and this album shows why. It is an album of techno that explores the outer edges of our universe with cinematic soundscapes and tiny little sonic details. IDM, electro and breakbeats all colour the rhythms and the ambient synths are things or real beauty that cannot but captivate your mind's eye. Avant-garde yet relatable, this is a high class outing.

Review: Banyek is next up on the prolific Lithuanian label Greyscale with Alue, a new album that marks the imprint's 37th full-length overall. It is a typically expansive and immersive listen that takes inspiration from cities like Riga and Espoo. Dub techno, ambient and experimental all infuse the sound waves and the intricate craft of Banyek means you're always hooked onto some small detail as the gentle rhythms flow over you. There are stark melodies and more airy atmospheres, minimalism masterpieces and calming sounds a plenty as this most super exploration of tone, time and texture plays out.

He has also found the time to craft this new full length on the Vision (drum & Bass) label land it comes on nice green and blue marbled vinyl. He draws heavily on his work making sounds for films and manages to cook up an array of evocative soundscapes that play out like a mental movie. The likes of 'Uncanny Valley' are kinetic, tightly woven affairs alive with static, and 'Different Eyes' has a more serene feel with swirling pads and distant melodies hinting at a brighter future. Great stuff.

Review: After a run of reissues and a boundary-blurring fusion of classical music and electronica (January 2021's Angel's Flight), Norwegian ambient veteran Geir Jennsen AKA Biosphere has gone back to basics on Shortwave Memories. Ditching software and computers for analogue synths, drum machines and effects units, Jennsen has delivered album that he claims was inspired by the post-punk era electronics of Daniel Miller and Matin Hannett, but instead sounds like a new, less dancefloor-conscious take on the hybrid ambient/techno sound he was famous for in the early 1990s. The results are uniformly brilliant, making this one of the Norwegian trailblazer's most alluring and sonically comforting albums for decades.

Review: Originally released in 1994, Biosphere's second album Patashnik, as we would later find out, was only the beginning. Geir Jenssen's Biosphere project has since become a name that rolls off the tongue alongside Brian Eno when talk of ambient comes to the table, and the use of vocals in tracks like "Phantasm" and "Startoucher" are as memory jogging as Marshall Jefferson's "Mushrooms". The music here provides a snapshot of Biosphere's sound before he committed a decade's worth of albums to UK label Touch. For a '90s take on things, you could day "SETI Project" has aged better than "Mestigoth", while the nebulous to deep classical tones and bluey-hues of productions like "Decryption", "Patashnik" and "Mir" remain timeless.

Review: Ever-interested in pushing boundaries through sound and ideas, Bjarki returns to the full-length release schedule with another captivating adventure down electronic roads less travelled. More IDM than techno, tracks like 'Puppet Parade' perhaps hit the nail most squarely in terms of descriptions here - warm pads and metronomic accents in the foreground, strange, treacle-y alien noises in the background. Weird and always wonderful, one of the most impressive achievements here is the deft ability to create soundscapes that simultaneously welcome us with open arms and defy expectation and norms. Whether it's the 170 snares and lush tranquility of 'Healing From Memory', or the strangely rousing but thoroughly off-planet 'Void Visitor' to close.

Review: Album number six from Sheffield's electronic heroes The Black Dog was closer to their debut, Bytes, than anything that came in between. "We never set out to make it like Bytes," group member Martin Dust has since explained. "My idea was to create something you could come home to after you'd just ben to a club or gig, that would start at the right pace and then just wind down into a great album and just chill out." Suffice to say, they achieved that and then some. Silenced is an example of downtempo that still feels like it has one foot in the rave, sounds informed by 4AM highs and 10AM quiet, here made precious through the use of blissful and complex tones that envelop and encase your mind. A record everyone should own.

Review: Ben Lukas Boysen's Alta Ripa marks a transformative milestone in his artistic evolution as he blends introspection with bold experimentation. Rooted in the serene landscapes of rural Germany where his creativity first blossomed, the album also reflects the dynamic energy of Berlin, which reshaped his sound in the early 2000s. Boysen's fourth studio album bridges past and future, merging the reflective melodies of his youth with the innovative tones of Berlin's electronic scene. He describes it as music his 15-year-old self would admire but only his grown-up self could create. Unbound by tradition, Boysen's eclectic influences drive his constant musical reinvention.

Review: While once a prolific producer of melodious, far-sighted techno futurism rooted in the sci-fi sounds of Detroit, Aril Brikha has been all but silent in recent years. There have been occasional singles and collaborations of course, but nothing significant. "Dance of a Trillion Stars", his first album release for 13 years, is therefore a significant release. Given the title and his previous work, you'll not be surprised to hear that it's every bit as starry and intergalactic in tone as you'd expect, with the Swedish producer ambling through a fine mixture of gentle ambient soundscapes, melodious minimalist epics, Tangerine Dream style synthesizer workouts and blissfully colourful electronic compositions. There's little aimed at the dancefloor, but it's arguably better for it: this is Brikha at his most emotive and alluring.

Review: Pavel Milyakov has many irons in the fire these days, and he's adding to it once again with the PSY X label. Previously working closely with labels like Gost Zvuk, the Moscow-based artist best known as Buttechno has rightly positioned himself as one of the more prominent artists operating in the Russian techno scene. His sound on this new release is wayward and punky, revelling in knotty acid lines and submerged rhythm sections to arrive at something which feels delightfully deviant. Given the six tracks across this record, there's plenty of space for Milyakov to roam, touching on sparser moments of tension as well as more forthright dance pieces. But experimentation is the glue holding the record together - the singular driving force behind the Buttechno sound, promising much with the launch of this new label.

Review: Brock Van Wey hails from the Bay Area but his BVDUB project is known worldwide. It sees the American provide a near-constant stream of innovative ambient music on the Past Inside The Present label - this new double album comes just a couple of months after his last one, Fumika Fades, but is essential once more. There are plenty of intense and heavily textured tracks as well as more empty and escapist pieces with heavenly melodies and subtle vocals worked into to dreamy effect. As always he serves up the album in various formats and this is the double cassette version which lends itself to the lo-fi aesthetic perfectly.
