Review: Soon, Fabric's impeccable mix series will reach its 100th installment - an impressive achievement in anyone's book. This 92nd volume comes from rising star Call Super, who joins the dots between all manner of tasty house and techno treats - some left-of-centre and quirky, others simply wonky and picturesque - over the course of 80 hugely entertaining minutes. According to the producer, it's designed for the break of dawn, rather than peak-time, a fact reflected in the presence of dreamy, loose, fuzzy and melodious tracks from the likes of Carl Craig, Speng Bond, Max Loderbauer, Shanti Celeste and Dresvn.

Review: Greek-Anglo-Turk hypnotic techno kings Cassegrain inaugurate their new imprint Arcing Seas; an anagram of their name: get it? It's business as usual from Alex Tsiridis and Huseyin Evirgren and the inauguration of the label follows several acclaimed releases on the likes of Prologue and Infrastructure NYC. The title track powers away with relentless low-tom drums giving it most of the groove beneath a ringing melody. "Skull Gun" is stripped but effective DJ tool with its loopy repetition just begging to blended with another trance inducing track while "Trappist" is the peak time weapon on offer; with its tape delayed melody spitting about the place in hysterical fashion.

Review: When it comes to DJing there aren't many names as trusted as Marcel Dettmann to provide the essential mix, be it in CD or podcast format. To date he's curated the second installment of Ostgut's in-house Berghain mix series and the Conducted mix for Belgian label Music Man. So it's about time Fabric invited the Berghain resident to participate in their own mix series, with this 77th edition providing a selection mostly based on unreleased MDR demo tracks that Dettmann's been utilising in his sets for years. The result is a good primer for what to expect from his label in the future, with Answer Code Request, Norman Nodge, Ilian Taper Dario Zenker and French producer Marcelus amongst the high-profile names contributing unreleased productions.

Review: A welcome return to the techno game for DVS1 who opens proceedings on his own newly minted Hush imprint in superlative fashion, laying down a double dose of creeping, minimalist Detroit machine funkers. "Evolve" is an prime experiment in mind altering rhythmic sensations, steadily drawing out wave after wave of devious analogue flourishes amidst paranoia inducing skittering percussion and perennially menacing bass throbs. Always undulating but never exploding, "Evolve" is a near perfect example of DVS1's craft. It is complemented by the aptly titled "Submerge" with the liquefied chords providing some expansive beauty amidst the tightly wound groove and tropical rainstorm of percussion.

Review: Commonly found lurking around the murky underworld of Sex Tags alongside SVN, Dynamo Dreesen makes a forthright outing for his own Acido imprint, and wonderful weirdness abounds. With some assistance from Sotofett and P Gelberg on "Asis", a loping and muddied beat tries its best to support a hefty acid arpeggio after a few too many and just about holds firm. On "Tape 1" we seem to have been plunged to the bottom of the bottle, only to be determinedly clawing our way back out again with the stark techno construction of "Tape 2". "Tape 3" occupies a woozy dub space that moves like house music but sounds like a joyous experiment, and old buddy SVN steps up for a remix that maintains the weirdness but offsets it with a delicate choice of chord.

  3. Planet Ape (raw mix)
Review: Workshop dude Even Tuell enters the Hula Vortex on his belated return to the Musik Krause imprint, with three tracks of finely crafted house music. Opening track "Mental Marathon" is aptly titled, sprawling its way across the A Side and operating at a subaqueous level, drawing out scratchy metallic tones and bubbling analogue textures. "A Close Dancin" utilises clinical usage of robotic vocals amidst an impressive melange of Detroit influenced sound design. There's an indefinable scratchy sound present throughout that sounds like a gremlin trying (and failing) to escape the mainframe. The overarching sense of unease continues with "Planet Ape" (raw mix), all off kilter programming and dull bass lines over the constant hum and buzz of dystopian atmosphere that simmers back and forth into focus.

  5. Instinct (Dopplereffekt - Hubble Constant remodel) (5:14)
Review: If you are going to do a remix 12", then take a leaf out of The Exaltics book. This record returns to The Truth, the rather comprehensive trawl through the German electro exponent's 2008-13 body of work with a cast of contemporaries that can only be described as stellar invited to remix their own personal highlights. Texan artist Gerard 'E.R.P.' Hanson, Gerald Donald's Dopplereffekt, Ultradyne, Objekt and Solar One regular Gosub are all on board to reimagine The Exaltics in their own particular visions and it's a truly mouth-watering 12". The ERP remix of "My Language" is all snapping drum machines and gliding utopian synth vistas, contrasting markedly with the hellish modular grit of Ultradyne's effort. Gosub's Turbity mix of "IMOEH" is a thing of delay-laden beauty, whilst Objekt is on similarly inspired form with his rendition of "Journey To Jupiter" which casts aside the needs of the dancefloor in favour of rooting deep into the psyche. To close Dopplereffekt deliver a remix of "Instinct" that sounds like Mike Parker making paranoid electro.

  3. Elec Pt 1 - "Drei Chinesen Mit Dem Acidbass"
  4. Elec Pt 1 - "The Player"
Review: Elect Pt1 becomes the latest collaborator in The Exaltics Meets series following prior introductions to Morphology and Gosub. For the uninitiated, Elect Pt1 was part of Bunker Records' second coming, originally '90s acid house label based out of the Hauge, said to have funded their earlier releases with "money made from selling LSD (silver surfers!)". German speakers will be able to decipher Elect Pt1's "Drei Chinesen Mit Dem Acidbass", a potential retrospective nod to Bunker's (now legendary) "acid planet" squat parties. A flabby kick, crushed hats and white noise sounding more like a baby robot tantrum than synthesis opens "The Party", before unexpected doo-doo-doo vocals become the tracks centrepiece. The Exaltics opens his side of the 12" with throbbing drums and hardedge acid in "The Midnight Connexion", which later gives way to uplifting chords. Acid and breakneck drum loops make up "Nichts Aber Auch Nichts" which also receives some euphoric synth treatment.

  1. Living Is Serious Business (Life acapella) (9:39)
  2. Living Is Serious Business (Carl Craig remix) (7:05)
Review: Given that he's always approached life with a cheery gusto, there's something rather ironic about Tim 'Love' Lee being involved in making a track called "Living Is Serious Business". Happily, he has man-of-the-moment Aaron 'Fit' Siegel by his side. The duo's original version is something of a trippy, late-night treat, with dubbed-out keys and percussive flourishes riding a dark Detroit bassline and fizzing, Motor City techno groove. It sounds like something that the brothers Fett would release on Sex Tags Mania, which is definitely a bonus in our book. Carl Craig does a sterling job on his flipside remix, retaining some of the original's eccentricity while adding a sweet melodiousness and production polish all of his own.

Review: Marcel Dettman's mighty MDR label doesn't offer a huge amount of releases every year, but what does get put out is always pure and utter quality. The Berghain resident pick out Ryan James Ford for number 17 in the catalogue, a young producer which we know little to nothing about at this point. We do, however, know that he makes seriously effective techno in the label's familiar style. There's five cuts spread across the two sides on here, all representative of Dettman's marathon sets in which he spans the full circle. Aside from all the techno bashings, there are also moments of tranquillity, manifested in the beatless ambience of "Hoodlam Klothe", and "Lempt Jarkarin", in particular. Do check "Rjiyen Orandim" for some serious percussive action, though. An impressive debut.

Review: Last year saw computer music pioneer Laurie Spiegel's 1980 debut The Expanding Universe reissued, making this the ideal time for Junior Boys producer Jeremy Greenspan to rework her track "Drums". Released with Spiegel's permission on the JIAOLONG label run by Daphni and Caribou man Dan Snaith, "Drums&Drums&Drums" as it has been named, opens with the unadulterated minimalism of Spiegel's original, slowly evolving with a steady 4/4 kick and pulsating analogue arpeggio which have the label's expected mixture of colourful psychedelics and no-nonsense rhythms, all building up to a hypnotic crescendo. On the flip is "Sirius Shake", a Greenspan original production whose abstract, brittle nature actually sounds considerably more Spiegel than his preceding rework.

Review: Despite being born and raised in Detroit, Luke Hess is rarely mentioned in the same breath as his Motor City peers. Then again, his brand and dub-infused techno doesn't fit neatly into the futurist narrative. This latest full-length flips the script slightly. While it has plenty of dub-flecked moments (see "Overcome" and "Humility"), there's a greater reliance on melody over mood. While this could be a reflection of the involvement of collaborator Omar-S, it's more likely an indication of Hess's development as a producer. Moving from hypnotic deep house to robust techno via beatless interludes, Keep On is Hess's most accessible set to date.

The label boss himself takes "Amor Fati" by Hodge to task, and turns out a delicately poised but satisfyingly weighty version replete with twinkling synth lines and jagged rhythmic incantations. Hodge meanwhile gets to have some fun with Bruce's "Tilikum", and weaves an emotional techno variation out of the component parts that stands amongst his most impassioned works to date, thanks in no small part to the heart-rending sweeps of chord that blanket the peak of the track.

Review: 12 months on from the release of Hunee's lauded Hunch Music full-length, Rush Hour has decided to release a pair of previously unheard reworks of album favourites. Stuttgart dynamo Mick Wills handles the A-side, turning "Hiding The Moon" into a spaced-out chunk of low-slung, late night techno (think sparse synth motifs, bubbling grooves, occasional acid lines and spooky atmospherics). Sex Tags deviant DJ Fett Burger serves up his interpretation of "Crossroads" on the flip, cleverly combining deep space ambient aesthetics with heavy dub bass, and hip-house era breakbeats. It sounds like an after-party destroyer in waiting.

Review: Delroy Edward's LA Club Resource finally drops its next bombshell, this time a collaborative effort that includes three newcomers, possibly riding low-key under different aliases. Riding shotgun, you got Chicago legend Gene Hunt with the minimal and freaky vibes of "OW (Drum Beat)", a woman's scream darting in and out of the stripped-back groove, and the heavily filtered "S Sonics" by the mysterious Wrecking Project. Over on the flip of the wax plate you have Blacktail's old-school lick "Now Muzik", while "Blimp Works" by Innsyter is a pumping techno gunshot that goes dirty and heavy on the percussive rattle. Raw, dirty, and messed up from the start.

Review: Ital's Lovers Rock label makes its first appearance of 2016, in the process offering up a quartet of fresh new cuts. It's arguably nowhere near as bleak and foreboding as you'd expect, with DJ Python's yearning IDM cut "Amazonia", in particular, delivering little less than melodic melancholia. Ital, too, is in a relatively positive mood (see the fluttering new age synths and druggy, bottom end throb of "Vacation"), though Gunnar Haslam flips the script completely on his titanium-clad, clandestine electro smasher "Vector No Campo". Sleeper Cell's ultra-deep, trippy ambient cut, "V", completes a fine package.

Review: Italian techno demi-god Lory D returns with the third instalment of the Strange Days series for Glasgow's Numbers! This guy is simply unstoppable and it's simply incredible to hear how he has managed to keep his sound so damn contemporary over the years. Oh, and it's rumoured that he used to be one of Aphex Twin's favourite techno artists back in the day! "Gm-HF" is a heads-down kinda nodder, packing a humongous bassline for the peak time floor, while "Acidspix", as the name suggests, is a beautifully odd 303 jam with enough stability to make it a perfectly usable dancefloor weapon. What more can we say? It's totally unmissable and warmly recommended.

Review: There's been a fair amount of hype around this unlikely collaboration between Zimbabwean mbira maestro Jacob Mafuleni and French electrofunk producer Gary Gritness. In truth, the hype is deserved. Offering a thoroughly fresh tale on traditional shona music, the album effortlessly blends percussion and vocals from Mafuleni and wife Martha Thorn with the vibrant synthesizers and on-point drum machine programming of Gritness. It's a formula that arguably shouldn't work, but in reality results in a string of memorable moments. For proof, check the near D&B tempo brilliance of "Mukuru", the intricate melodies, slipped beats and raw analogue bass of closer "Nyama Lekougoctha" and the sublime shona-electro fusion of opener "Mayariria".

  3. Mono Junk - "Apache Acid (The Raindance)" (5:33)
  4. Mono Junk - "Beyond The Darkness" (5:34)
Review: We're loving all this new action from Mono Junk and his sublime Dum label. Both the artist and his imprint have been important members of the Finnish techno sound, along with artists like Mika Vain and his Pan Sonic collaboration, and it's exactly what we think of as pure 'techno'. As with the other recent release on the label, there are two Melody Boy 2000 tracks, a project of his from the 90s. These are "Sound Stealer", a wavy, grungy techno sketch with an off-kilter tone, and the more broken, less direct groove called "All Alone" - the latter of which we can't recommend highly enough. On the B-side, it's back to his Mono Junk madness, and "Apache Acid (The Raindance)" is about as apt a name as you can get for this militant acid stomper, whereas "Beyond The Darkness" opts for a deeper, more explorative approach that shifts the focus onto the synthesizers. We love this, and so will you.
