Review: Shelved since 1981, "Three Little Words" is a collection of unreleased recordings from a veritable supergroup. Comprising heavyweights such as songwriter/producers Bill Meyers and Guy Thomas and Blood Sweat & Tears' Neil Subenhaus, Toto's Jeff Porcaro, Novo Combo's Carlos Rios, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Boruff and Mike Fisher, the album is an AOR-meets-yacht-meets-80s ballads that's captures every member's prowess and collective tightness over nine short sweet tracks. Slick, incredibly well produced and loaded with a keen eye for arrangement and composition, it's remarkable these haven't surfaced before. An incredible piece of excavation from Preservation Records.

Review: Brooklyn-based band 79.5 make music right now, rather than being some long-lost acts from the 80s as you might expect from the cover. The group consists of singer, songwriter and composer Kate Mattison, singer and rapper Lola Adanna, drummer Caito Sanchez, bassist Andrew Raposo and sax player and flautist Izaak Mills. Their self-titled album comes on Razor-N-Tape and captures the sound of New York City perfectly with soul and psychedelic melodies that are hard to match. From 70s underground disco to acid jazz to and sweet pop sounds, they draw on it all for this fine concoction of dancefloor gems, which also serves as a protest at the often all too male dominated world of dance music.

Review: Classic psychedelic rock singer Han Young-ae was a big deal back in the 80s and 90s, then disappeared before returning with a new album in 2014. This album, Vol 2, on C Sharp comes on limited transparent yellow wax with an insert and nine tracks that fuse her theatrical rock singing style with old school 90s rock licks and cold electronic drums on the opener then switch it up entirely for the sentiment soul ballad on track two. There are more soft rock pieces, 80s disco tinged rock, and many other weird and wonderful in between sounds from this cult artist. It shows she has come a long way since starting out with a folk band in the 70s.

Review: Over the past three decades, Auckland has nurtured many generations of musicians, DJs, and producers who have blended jazz, blues, soul, funk, Latin, hip-hop, house, boogie and broken beats into all-new sounds. After 'Ours, a group led by pianist Michal Martyniuk and drummer and guitarist Nick Williams, very much embodies this tradition. Nick, influenced by his DJ mother and musician father, led Auckland's Latin-dub-funk band Tangent while Michal, raised in Poland, immersed himself in Auckland's jazz scene and formed After 'Ours in 2011. Their new album Long Road merges machine funk with vibrant live instrumentation and bridges jazz, neo-soul, electronica, and dance with infectious charm.

Review: Kaoru Akimoto's Cologne is 1986 classic from Japan. Electronic funk and soul, textbook city-pop synth and ballad all define the 10 glorious tunes. There are camp upbeat bangers like the NRG disco pomp of 'Narcissist' with its acrobatic vocals, but also more deep cut and boogie tinged joints like 'Dress Down' which will light up any dance floor. There is real theatrical drama in the swopping strings and staccato bass of 'Nageki No Puzzle' epic rock licks on 'Love Letter' that veer towards cheese but never quite end up fully submerged in musical cheddar. This reissue comes on coloured vinyl.

Review: Kalita has a fine record of unearthing holy grail records and reissuing them to rabid fans around the world. The latest is a real corker even by their standards - an unrelated album of soul, gospel and disco songs from Al-Dos Band. It is part of the first drop for Record Store Day 2021 and immediately melts the heart. 'Don't Come Smiling Back' is a deeply emotive slow jam with an impassioned vocal and pained chords, while 'Your Presence' is a much more rapturous and uplifting bit of musical worship, 'Some Things Don't Mean A Thing' is a robust and rugged bit of strident disco with magic funk riffs, and 'Love Jones Coming Down' is a real dance floor heater.

Review: The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping them for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe. Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on their sound, the band enlisted two giants of underground hip-hop to bless mics on the album as well. After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection.

Review: Boom: three years, three albums. No biggie for Bristol duo The Allergies, Jalapeno's biggest success story since Kraak & Smaak. Each album shows them getting deeper into the groove, creeping away from the cheeky samples and sculpting their own pedigree funk originals. With Ugly Ducking Andy Cooper onside through the mix from the wild ride vibing "Fade Away" to the white knuckle lyrical fire of "Run It Back", there's a real band feeling to the whole album as familiar voices thread throughout the jams... including that of UK hip hop legend Dr Syntax.

Review: You have a genuine piece of musical history here. The Anchors may not be remembered by many, but made a significant impact on everyone who does. Black Soul is the third and - to all musicologist knowledge - last record put out by this pioneering South African funk-soul outfit. Straight out of the Johannesburg township of Alexandria at the height of Apartheid, they became known for exceptional musicianship and reinterpreting the classic Memphis, USA sound for their own oppressed community. Part three of that legacy takes things much, much further, though. So, we can definitely still hear those Mid South sounds that represent the very essence of soul, but here the aesthetic becomes something altogether different, Afro and specific to time and place. Homage paid to the genre founders, but drawing on personal circumstances to own things for themselves.

Review: And Is Phi (Andrea Isabelle Phillips) is a multi-disciplinary artist from Norway and the Philippines now based in South East London. Double Pink is a debut album of great quality that draws on a wide sphere of influence, from Joni Mitchell's tender vocals to Frank Zappa's weirdness via 90s r&b and the jazz tinged beatmaking of Madlib's seminal album for Blue Note. it is both late night and languid but immediate and emotive, with a world of colour and texture that is all blurred, smoothed off, packed with emotion and smart riffs, melodies and hooks.

Finally, the Detroit hero is back with a splash on his regular home of Mahogani Music with a stunning follow-up that brings out the best of his many musical threads. There's Cubano style vibes on "Back In The Old Times" and hand-clapping gospel tinted house grooves on "Mighty Tribe", sweet and sexy downtempo jams like "I'll Wait 4 U" and mad heavy R&B beatdowns like "What's Ur Name Again" - that's just the first four tracks and when they hit like this, you know the rest of the record's just as strong and just as varied.

It first appeared on the Zodiac label in 1972 and didn't give rise to any big hits but that didn't stop it from becoming a favourite with those who know. This reissue saves you the financial damage of copping an original and sounds superb from the opening lushness of '(I Want To Be) Whatever It Takes To Please You' to the lung-busting vocal expression of 'You Made A Believer Out Of Me' via heart aching blue-eyed sounds of 'My Love Is Comin' Down'.

Review: Anduze is a new school vocalist with an old school soul sound. He has that rare quality of being able to bring to mind greats like Marvin Gaye and James Brown while also having his own sound. He reimagines the greats on this new album that was written during the pandemic and blurs the lies between jazz, soul, funk, R&B and pop similar in fashion to the likes of Prince or Lenny Kravitz. Raised on the native land of St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands, Anduze draws also on reggae sounds on the deep cut 'Helen' while picking up the funk on cuts such as 'How To Love A Good Man.'

It's on heavyweight vinyl for serious sound system detonation and comes with plenty of catchy hooks and buttery smooth vocals. His 2018 album Welcome To The Colorful World of Arp Frique showed off his fresh take on disco with a host of collaborators and now he once again lays down the beats while various guests appear on this new EP on Colourful World. Elements of zouk, highlife, Afro-disco and many more worldly rhythms lend these cuts their unique and characterful style. Analog drum machines, kick rhythms and psyched out synths all sit next to great vocals for a kaleidoscopic trip like no other.

Review: Arp Frique & The Perpetual Singers come together for this most personal gospel funk album which was inspired by the birth of Frique's daughter, Jesamy. It finds the Amsterdam-based multi-instrumentalist mixing up organic funk with obscure synths, bubbly basslines that are always on the move with swirling guitars that add the colour and all make for an unusual and interesting mix of P-funk and gospel-disco. There are plenty of universal messages throughout which all emphasise the need for unconditional love while legendary vocalists like Dennis Bovell, Muriel Blijd, Mariseya, Brandon Delagraentiss and Rocq-E Harrell contribute to the powerful sound. Delagraentiss's choir, The Gospel Experience, also do their bit by adding big, rich, heartfelt vocals. It's quite the listen.

The adventurous outfit are eclectic and have a far from predictable sound that combines acoustic sounds with African and Middle Eastern influences, a hint of Afro-Cuban Orientalism, spiritual jazz and avant garden flourishes. This album was recorded in 1980 and has a truly worldwide sound that very much fits in with the sound of the current jazz revival. There is cool jazz on 'Wet Walnuts and Whipped Cream', percussive drenched grooves on the title track and much more besides. A real classic.

Review: The husband/wife songwriting powerhouse that gave us most of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's 60s hits and the lion's share of Diana Ross's early material, Nickolas and Valerie Simpson launched their own recording career in the early 70s that lasted well into the 90s. Much of the sharpest and most prolific output during this second chapter of their 40 year career was between 1973 and 1981, which is displayed right here on this limited Record Store Day gatefold vinyl. From the glam boogie struts of "Nobody Knows" to the slap bass 80s funk of "Love Don't Make It Right", their dynamic partnership - with Ashford's flexible falsetto and Valerie's gutsy Turnerisms - is truly one of a kind and has aged incredibly well.

The album has just four tunes across two sides of vinyl and has talented musicians like Joe Henderson, Charles Tolliver, Bruno Carr, Jack Wilson and more all featuring. Her magnificently rich voice conveys the pain and lament everyone has felt at some point in their life of this new sophomore album Through & Through. There is an honesty to it that has defined all her work to date and a determination to really say something with her music. Unrestricted by genre though couched in hip hop and r&b, lead singles like 'Dance With Me' marry lo-fi beat work with her smoky, raw soul vocals to make for something truly impactful. There is no wonder this one has already had plenty of press praise on both sides of the Atlantic.

Review: There are few certified music stars that France's Wally Badarou hasn't worked with along his illustrious career. Black Uhuru, Grace Jones and Herbie Hancock are just some of the names he's collaborated with, but the man only got to that stage thanks to his wonderful solo albums of the early '80s. His very first LP, the much-coveted Back To Scales To-Night, is a sublime boogie-soul gem and it's thanks to the collaboration between Expansion and Love Vinyl that we have it on our shelves once again. The title track is an instant hit of euphoria upon first listen, and its sonic treatment which rendered it stand-out back in the day... and still today! "One Day Won't Give It Away" is another favourite of ours, a drum-machine soul groover, but the instrumental version of "London Town" is also a reason to cop this magnetic, and refreshing soul album.

Formed by Chris Pedley and brothers Dan and Richard Baker, their love for funk and soul has led to a dynamic career spanning 13 albums, including their latest, The Next Last Party. Balancing fiery funk with soulful respite, further standout moments include 'Western Morning' (with Frankie Connolly) and the mellow closer 'All The Time'. This is another superb album full of timeless funk and soul fusion for many different moods.

Review: Melbourne funk and soul talents The Bamboos have now been blazing their own trail for almost a quarter of a century. This Is How You Do It makes their 11th studio album and shows the nine piece collective still has plenty to say for itself. Although at times this hints at a new direction, the album also bares all the hallmarks fans have come to love and expect from the group with Lance Ferguson's soulful production and effortless groove paired with the potent vocals of Kylie Auldist. Guest MCs from the US (Ozay Moore and Ohmega Watts) feature as do some boogie and disco tinged singles like 'Ex-Files'.

Review: Georgia-born soul singer Nathan Bartell cut a number of obscure deep funk, soul and disco singles in the 1970s and early '80s, most of which are on the wants-list of some of the world's most enthusiastic and knowledgeable record collectors. Athens of the North is therefore doing a good deed by collecting these sought-after "sides" together on an album for the very first time. The self-titled set does a great job of introducing us to Bartell's soulful world via a mixture of righteous funk floor-burners, emotional slow jams, Southern soul numbers, slick boogie numbers and '80s soul treats. In other words, it's a much-needed retrospective of one of underground soul's genuine forgotten talents.

Review: Cult folk funk opus from two Hawaiian sons of a dolphin whisperer, this self-titled album was written and released 45 years ago but still sounds just as calming, alluring and mystical as ever. The dreamy flutes and staggered tempo of "Wake Me In The Morning", the gutsy ballad and soaring strings of "Joe Arnold", the staccato bluesy pop of "Katy" and the positively Balearic classic "High Tide"... Moments like this will always resonate. The only album the Batteaux brothers ever released, relatively rare and prone to bootlegs, this is the first official re-release in over five years and a great chance to catch up.

Review: Beaters were a legendary group from South Africa that initially released this album in the late 1960s on CBS. They mixed up their own vision of funk, soul and R&B across plenty of compelling and coherent instrumentals. The band eventually morphed into the equally legendary South African outfit Harari. This is the first-ever reissue for this psychedelic soul classic and a first-ever reissue album for the young but already vital Selected Works label. The long player comes with all of the original artwork and plenty of standout tunes.

Review: Sol Set is a Detroit-based collective, an amalgamation of composers, musicians, artists and vocalists brought together by producer John Beltran, whose new label All Good Music chooses its debut album for its inaugural release. John Beltran and Shane Donnelly preside over seven sumptuous and confident slices of modern, sub-kissed soul and Latin sure to put a smile on anyone's face, even those of us faced with an altogether more British summer. Influences range from the Steve Wonder-style double vocals of 'Bliss Mode' to the South American 'Rhythm of the Sun', which echoes the beach bum haziness of Jorge Ben, but the vibe remains joyful and skillfully yet effortlessly executed throughout. Gorgeous.

Review: Jorge Ben was the bad lad of Brazilian samba and someone who rattled feathers throughout his career thanks to his always expressive, innovative takes on the genre. He was also hugely prolific, with countless classic singles and LPs to his name. In 1983 he put out Davida, a record packed with hits from this towering Latin music figurehead. Amongst them are 'Rio Babilonia' plus stone cold classics 'Taj Mahal / Pais Tropical,' while the opener itself is pretty hot thanks to the addition of fellow legend Tim Maia. This one is hard to find in good, affordable condition so do not sleep on this reissue.

Review: As you can probably work out from the title, this one is the tenth album from Brazil's samba king and genre game-changer Jorge Ben (it makes a change from him calling most of his albums 'Ben' to be honest.) It came first back in 1973 and features a collection of his then-most popular songs. All of them come from the first decade of his career but were all rerecorded as medleys. They bring with them sunny melodies and his signature stuffing grooves, acerbic and witty lyrics and easy to get lost in rhythms.

Review: Jorge Ben is one of the most influential Brazilian artists of his era. The so-called samba king brought all new rule-breaking style to the genre - both musically and lyrically - and fomented his own freeform acid-samba spin-off over the course of an impossibly high number of albums. One of the problems is that many of them were all given the same name, including this one, Ben. Fortunately which ever one you pick up there is joy to be had. Here there are plenty of psychedelic head twisters such as the opener 'Morre O Burro Fica O Homem' as well as deer, more soulful cuts like 'Fio Maravilha'.

Review: Brazilian Jorge Ben, you could say, is a musical equivalent to football superstar Pele. He is known around the world, is hugely prolific and had a style all his own. A Tabua De Esmeralda is the 11th album the great singer-songwriter and guitarist recorded and it came back in 1974. It was soon lapped up by fans and critics alike for its timeless blending of samba rock with his unique alchemy and sonic satire and found Ben redefined the vocal style he has showcased on previous work Forca Bruta. This time his vocals occasionally go off-grid and sit behind the beats to make for an alluring effect, while the album was also the last to use guitar quite as extensively.

Review: Tropical is Brazilian samba legend Jorge Ben Jor's fifteenth album and it blends unreleased tracks with reimagined covers like 'Taj Mahal' and 'Pais Tropical.' This superb mix of tunes embraces more pop and Western influences than before and hints at his later shift toward the World-Dance sound of the 1980s. Originally aimed at international markets, the album wasn't released in Brazil until 1977 but ably showcased Ben Jor's immense talent as he skilfully revitalises familiar tunes with fresh arrangements that capture the spirit of the times. This era-defining record from Brazil is yet another must-have.

It now gets reissued on limited and numbered gatefold 180-gram audiophile white vinyl after being originally released in 1971. The high-quality pressing and crisp sound make it a standout on vinyl and remind that as well as the catchy and loved-up hist, Benson had some serious jazz chops.

It is an otherworldly offering of cosmic jazz and soul that is truly unique. The tone of Bey's voice always conveys a certain sense of pain, while the instrumentals around them range from deep and pensive to funky and playful. It is an album that takes a long time to parse and understand if you ever really do, and it has a superb cover, too. Do not sleep on this reissue.

He does so by serving up a mix of great covers and plenty of superb unreleased songs that are embellished with help from plenty of friends and peers from both the Italian and international jazz scenes including Paolo Fresu, Stefano Di Battista, Rosario Giuliani, Francesco Cafiso. It was all recorded in Palermo with local players and the whole thing has a noir edge but warm vibe that plays out coherently from front to back despite the range of sounds touched upon.

Now reissued by Schema Records in a special edition double vinyl set on blue transparent wax, it reminds us of Mario Biondi's remarkable voice. The American recording world doing what it has always done so well, creating huge, heartbreaking, hopeful, and captivating mini operas disguised as pop. Or, if you want to get technical here: soft rock, country, folk, r&b and soul. OK, so there are elements of funk and jazz, too, and the result is a heady brew that's pretty inescapable. Harking back to the balladry heydays, with shades of Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, and Carly Simon, to name but a few - in delivery and performance, if not necessarily tone - no matter where you're listening from it's going to be hard to forget this one.

By then, Birdsong was already a significant figure at the cult label having proven himself as both a songwriter and producer. The album features several tracks that became dance floor staples such as 'Cola Bottle Baby,' 'Kunta Dance' and 'Goldmine,' each packed with infectious funk grooves perfect for partying. Famously, 'Cola Bottle Baby' was later sampled by Daft Punk in their smash hit 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger'. Although the album didn't chart, it remains a prized find for disco and soul heads.

Review: Since his emergence several years ago, London producer Bullion has matched a chameleonic approach to music (be it motorik, hi-life, technicolour pop or the soft rock of his recent Nautic project) with peerless quality control; a feat achieved by few other contemporary musicians. The latest focus of his creative energies is Blludd Relations, a collaborative endeavour with Elmore Judd artist Jesse Hackett. This self titled album sees Bllud Relations focus on a charmingly naive and wonky approach to pop music that feels like a less scruffy cousin to Micachu's vastly under-rated material. Sharing vocal and instrumental duties equally, the ten tracks here demonstrate a level of musical invention that's refreshing to hear with the smudged vocoder pop of "Even Steven" and the dreamy shanty "Where Do The Words Come From?" real standouts.

They were active in the seventies and in 1972 dropped their Magumba album. It's a fiery fusion of funk, Latin and soul music that is a cult classic amongst collectors. As such, originals are hard to find and will cost upwards of 300 quid so this reissue is well timed. From the strident horns of 'BRC's Groove' to the ska-like swagger and reggae overtones of 'Mother And Child Reborn' this is a great summertime listen.
