Review: Back ion 2021, the relaunched Foliage Records imprint offered up a killer mix from NYC house legends Mood II Swing, the must-check Deep Rooted. Soon, the revitalised label will release a sequel, with long-serving British deep house don Atjazz at the helm. This sampler EP boasts six of the highlights from that set - all remixed and reworked by Atjazz himself. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the tense, slowly building deep-tech shuffle of Halo''s 'Glorty (Atjazz Galaxy Art Remix)'and the sun-splashed 6am bounce of Atjazz's remix of Dominique Fils-Aime's gorgeous 'Sun Rise', to the dreamy dancefloor wooziness of Ralf GUM's 'AWA' (re-imagined by Atjazz as an Osunlade-esque spiritual house workout) and the jazzy, bass-guitar-propelled broken house excellence of 'On The Road (Vocal Mix)', a three-way collab between Atjazz, Kelli Sae and The Realm.

Review: Get yourself geared up for festival season with some fierce party starters certified with the Glitterbox stamp. Melvo Baptiste leads the charge with 'Sweat', a sizzling disco house stomper with Dames Brown giving the biggest diva energy on her show-stopping vocal. Lovebirds bring unbridled joy on the Philly string swoon and slinky b-line funk of 'Burn It Down', while Art Of Tones & Inaya Day keep it peak time on the sassy strutter 'Give My Love'. Young Pulse & Fleur De Mur complete the set with 'Smooth Sweet Talker', another bright and bold vocal cut par excellence.

Review: Original Gravity strides into 2025 with this electrifying debut release from I Ragazzi. The limited 45 rpm has been crafted by the talented Neil Anderson and the title cut 'Terremoto' on the A-side bursts with funky, soulful energy that promises to keep floors moving and grooving all night long. It has big drums, crashing hits and driving Hammond organ stabs that never let up. On the flip, things get a little more laid back with 'Via Appia' which is led by more great organs, this time with swirling horn sounds and an inviting rhythm.

Review: Ltd B's good recent run of form continues with another dive into lush deep house realms courtesy of ICTV. First off the mark is 'Hit The Floor' with its US garage-inspired drums and some old school hip-house vocals. 'Orange Mood' is a steamy one with romantic melodies soothing the soul and some smart vocals adding a tough of firey soul. 'Adrift' then picks up the pace with some high-speed jungle breakbeats and 'Dazzling' sinks back into loved-up late-night sounds with expressive vocal yelps. Last of all, 'Sunset Recall' takes things down into blissed out realms with dusty drums and wispy pads.

Review: A standout slice of modern soul and disco straight from NYC, penned by producer Alan Jones. This release switches things up from the original by offering a unique B-side with a lower vocal mix, crafted for DJs who want a fresh take for their sets. With a groovy, infectious energy, this updated version is perfect for the dancefloor. A must-have for collectors and DJs alike, this 45 is guaranteed to get the crowd moving.

Review: 'Fast Freddie the Roller Disco King' is a tune that is as good as its title. It was originally a single by Little Anthony and the Imperials (as The Imperials), featuring none other than Prince on guitar, synth and keyboards. The track's base was recorded by Prince with Pepe Willie and Andre Cymone at Sound Palace Studios in New York with later vocal and instrumental overdubs by The Imperials. The B-side, 'I Just Wanna Be Your Lovin' Man,' is an early version of '10:15,' though Prince's involvement as guitarist on this one remains unclear. Either way, this is a brilliant reissue for disco and funk lovers.

Review: The Frosted label is back with more brilliance from Inland Knights in the form of this newly remastered version of the classic 'Figure It Out.' It was first put out back in 2013 as the first release on the label and remains a vital tune from the British pair. On the flip, Mark Farina is one of those hallowed producers who always has his own unique sonic signature, most famously under his Mushroom Jazz alias. His edit brings plenty of depth and broken beat lushness with noodling guitar riffs and spoken words making it a backroom gem.

Review: Space Echo returns with a bold funk-fuelled trip here that is powered by irresistible rhythms built on downtempo grooves. The track reflects on war-driven forces destabilising communities and Gianluca Petrella's trombone work channels pure Fred Wesley-esque funk energy while 1970s-inspired choral arrangements amplify its introspective message. Alongside this, Agosta's remix of 'Mother Forgive Us' from The Invisible Session's Echoes Of Africa transforms the track into a futuristic Afro-funk odyssey with tribal percussion tubing up next to pulsating electronics. A great package with a message of climate urgency that calls for a reconnection to nature.

Review: While the Melodeum label is based in Chicago, many of its releases take cues from rubbery tech-house, minimal techno and early 2000s style German 'digital disco'. There's a flavour of the latter sound, pioneered by the Force Inc label, on 'New Chapter', the lead cut from Iron1's first EP for the imprint. All elastic beats, jazzy synth-bass, playful samples and dreamy chords, it's tech-house-funk for the nu-disco generation. The Argentinian producer opts for a spot of tech-house/synth-jazz fusion on flipside opener 'Gossip', before going deeper and woozier on the sample-rich deep house funk of 'Jameson'. As debuts go, it's impressively assured and genuinely ear-catching.

Review: Ilija Rudman shows his class here with two edits for the always-on-point Brooklyn Highs label. He turns his hand to an original by Soul Men aka Black Moses and Part 1 will her you lost in a reverie. The meandering, stoned, slow-motion funk licks, gentle drums and wallowing chords all wash over you like a soothing breeze. The Higher Ground mix part II introduces buttery male vocals that drip with eroticism and soul. This one should come with a pregnancy warning.

Review: Sofia Manari and Inokasira Rangers are not strangers to working together on their own unique covers of some classic sounds, all reworked into fresh dub grooves. This time they turn their focus to 'First Love, which is a lush listen with Manari's soothing and sultry vocal delivery. On the flip is another laid-back dub sound with a constant rhythmic pulse, natty chords and more clean and soulful vocals from Manari making this a sweet little 7" from Japan's finest, Parktone.

Review: The debut recording from The Ancients, an intergenerational trio featuring Isaiah Collier, William Hooker and William Parker initially formed to play Milford Graves' Mind Body Deal exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. This double LP captures the raw energy and improvisational brilliance of their live performances, showcasing the enduring legacy of free jazz. Collier's tenor saxophone soars and wails, drawing on influences from John Coltrane to Charles Gayle, while grounding his explorations in a deep understanding of structure and form. Hooker's drumming is a force of nature, a whirlwind of polyrhythms and explosive energy that pushes the music to its limits. And Parker, a true legend of the avant-garde, anchors the music with his virtuosic bass playing, creating a foundation for the trio's improvisational flights. The music is both a celebration of the rich history of free jazz and a bold exploration of new sonic territory. The Ancients tap into the spirit of their predecessors, channeling the energy of the Cecil Taylor Unit and the Ornette Coleman Trio, while forging their own unique path, the power of collective improvisation looming large throughout.

Review: The Ethiopian Ibex Band's 1976 album Stereo Instrumental Music is being re-released as a cornerstone of Ethiopian music. This record is credited with shaping the modern sound of Ethiopian music and the band's enduring influence can be felt in the works of legends like Aster Aweke, Girma Beyene and Mulatu Astatke. Created by Giovanni Rico and Selam Woldemariam, Stereo Instrumental Music is part of a significant legacy that challenges the idea of a "golden age" of Ethiopian music and highlights the constant evolution of the sound. The Ibex Band, later known as The Roha Band, has remained central to that and Ethiopia's wider scene.

Review: Ice's early work captures a pivotal moment in funk's evolution, weaving together taut grooves and vibrant African-inspired rhythms. Recorded during the band's formative years, the music brims with raw energy and creative ambition. Polished basslines drive the tracks, while percussion bursts with a vitality that speaks to their Parisian influences at the time. Horn stabs and tightly wound guitar lines add layers of complexity, and the occasional vocal inflection injects a sense of urgency. With each listen, the production reveals new texturesismall details that elevate the record beyond its era.

Review: Marking its debut on vinyl, Jiro Inagaki's groundbreaking jazz-rock album introduces a bold fusion of new rock elements, featuring Inagaki's vocals alongside Sammy and Yasushi Sawada for the first time. Backed by a stellar lineup including Masahiko Sato, Kimio Mizutani, and Hiro Yanagida, this reissue by Nipponophone underlines Inagaki's status as a maverick in Japanese jazz. Originally released in 1971, the album blends heavy rock grooves with an enigmatic allure, resonating deeply with collectors of rare groove worldwide. Inagaki, renowned for his saxophone work and production skills, has left an indelible mark not only in jazz but also as a sought-after session player for legends like Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra. This reissue reaffirms his legacy, offering a glimpse into his influential jazz-rock era.

Review: India Arie was born in Colorado in 1975 and emerged as a superb singer-songwriter, producer and musician with her groundbreaking 2001 debut album, Acoustic Soul, which now gets remastered and reissued on vinyl. Defying conventional r&b norms, the album fused elements of soul, folk, and hip-hop and drew a diverse fanbase. Its honest, stripped-down beauty and Arie's rich vocal talent captivated listeners and set her apart from other artists of the time. Acoustic Soul received seven Grammy nominations, a testament to its impact, though it didn't secure a win. Nonetheless, the album remains a beloved classic and is widely regarded as her defining work.

Review: Takeshi Inomata's Drum Method reissue is jazz-rock at its fiercest, transforming a drum instructional into a relentless groove machine. Inomata's legendary, boundary-pushing stick work shines, leading Sound Limited through a heady mix of originals and covers like 'Runaway Child' and 'Smack Water Jack.' The album, filled with dizzying solos and Norio Maeda's standout arrangements, is a masterclass in rhythm and energy, showing Inomata's unstoppable drive to reshape the genre. This reissue is pure, high-octane funk and groove at its finest.

Review: Emerging from the vibrant but devilish Bermuda scene of the early 70s, Spacing Out stands as a gleaming instrumental lapis. The entirely self-taught band recombined the raw chi of OG instrumentation with pre-spirited arrangements by The Meters, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin and The Isley Brothers. This one cemented the Invaders as a finely polished instrumental ensemble, gilding the slabs for the retro-soul and funk scenes to follow, and which were in turn incubators of hatchlings Daptone and Big Crown. The reissue, a collaboration with the band and their full participation, comes complete with an expansive booklet by Jefferson "Chairman" Mao, offering an in-depth look at the group with rare photos. With expository, reverb-laden percs, ridin' breakdowns and low strung brasses, the record arouses a mood of loose-girdled passion.

Review: Isao Suzuki's follow-up to his breakthrough album captures the essence of Japanese jazz in the 1970s, a period where the traditional swing style was redefined with a unique, more restrained approach. This album features exceptional interplay between Suzuki and saxophonist Kazumi Watanabe, with an added depth from pianist Kunihiko Sugano and drummer Tetsujiroh Obara. Notably, bassist Nobuyoshi Ino joins on two tracks, including a stirring rendition of 'Body and Soul', bringing a fuller sound to the ensemble and highlighting Suzuki's innovative use of the cello within the small group context. The music, originally released in 1974, avoids the dated, overly rigid patterns of some American jazz of the time, instead opting for more fluid and expressive forms. Reissued now, this album stands as an essential masterpiece in the Japanese jazz canon, showcasing Suzuki's ability to create timeless, intricate and captivating jazz that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.

Review: Those with expert knowledge of Japanese jazz have long regarded Orang Utan, a 1975 set spearheaded by renowned bassist and cellist Isao Suzuki, as a hard-to-find classic. It's thought of as one of Suzuki's most successful explorations of his innovative sound, which fluidly fused elements of jazz fusion and free-jazz. Suzuki was joined on the record by a who's who of Japanese jazz, including saxophonist Kenji Mori, guitarist Kazumi Watanabe, bassist Samu Kawalami and drummer Sjinji Mori. As this remastered reissue proves, it remains a sparkling and mood-enhancing affair, with highlights including the loose-limbed fusion excellence of 'Blue Road' and 'Where Are You Going', a sublime cover of the Shriley Horn song of the same name featuring guest vocals by Mari Nakamoto.

Review: In 1997, You Ishihara - a key figure in the of history of Japanese underground music, mainly thanks to his output as the leader of the band White Heaven - released this beauty. It's his debut solo album and in terms of the attention it received at the time, you might describe it as nothing more than a damp squib. Subsequently, it's only been availble on CD. However, for the first time on vinyl and to coincide with growing recognition that this is an album that's been unfairly lost in the cultural zeitgeist, it's now getting its flowers. Ishihara has a voice that lets those 60s melodies unfurl with the majesty of a flower opening its petals after a long winter. But he can also ramp it up to 13th Floor Elevator-esque psychedelic scuzz brilliance: 'Crevice' is all flailing hair, drum fills and beer spills. A lot of fun to balance out his Lou Reed-esque downtempo stuff.

Review: In 1970, Akira Ishikawa, a key figure in the jazz rock movement, ventured into bold new territory with his album Electrum. This ambitious project shows his innovative spirit, pushing jazz boundaries with its intense, precise grooves and the musicians' quest for new heights. The album features standout tracks like the tempestuous 'Electrum,' the complexly layered 'Revulsion,' and the tranquil 'Speak Under My Breath,' which captures the serene clarity of dawn. The presence of distinguished pianists and arrangers Masahiko Sato and Hiromasa Suzuki adds further depth and brilliance to this already vibrant work. Electrum is celebrated as a major achievement in Ishikawa's career and is a notable highlight within the Victor "Japanese Jazz" series. Its revival brings renewed attention to Ishikawa's groundbreaking exploration of jazz fusion.

Review: Watarase: Voice is a fantastic second release in this series following Fumio Itabashi's acclaimed Watarase: Echo. This new compilation serves up vocal versions of the masterpiece 'Watarase' featuring a range of artists including jazz vocalist Shigeo Maruyama, Korean folk singer Lee Jung Mi and Japanese vocalist Yuki Kaneko. The album focuses on previously unreleased tracks and showcases the global influence of the original and also includes the long-awaited complete version of 'Symphonic Poem 'Watarase,'" a key piece in the story of this beloved work. This is a great testament to 40 years of history and the enduring legacy of Itabashi's jazz artistry.

Review: Ysla, the latest album by Swiss-Polish-Japanese singer, composer and improviser Yumi Ito, is a breathtaking journey into the depths of personal storytelling and expansive, genre-blending soundscapes. Moving between art-pop, jazz and neoclassical, the album dives into themes of solitude, renewal and the end of worlds, beautifully woven with nature, psychology and societal reflections. For the first time, Ito recorded all piano parts herself, layering her vocals with remarkable grace over intricate compositions. In these seven original pieces, Ito has refined her vocal improvisation into a universal language that resonates effortlessly, transcending linguistic borders. Her voice glides seamlessly through varying rhythms and keys. Supporting her are Kuba Dworak on double bass and Iago Fernandez on drums, creating a fluid, versatile rhythm section that explores vast musical terrains. With contributions from guests like Chris Hyson on synths and Szymon Mika on guitar, Ysla feels both intimate and grand. Recorded with Daniel Dettwiler at Studio Idee und Klang on the legendary mixing console used by Queen and Supertramp, the album is a resonant island of artistryiundaunted, timeless and surrounded by vast oceans of sound. Ysla is Ito's boldest, most profound work yet.

Review: In 2019, Resistencia Sonora was born as a collaborative project uniting urban and rural ethnic-peasant resistances in Montes de Maria, Colombia's western Caribbean. Rooted in a musical epicentre renowned for gaita, cumbia, bullerengue, son palenque, son de negro and accordion styles like porros and pajaritos, the initiative celebrates and preserves the region's rich folkloric life. This album documents festive gatherings, knowledge exchange and co-creation inspired by composer Andres Narvaez, a social leader and land-rights activist. His vision brought musicians together to uphold traditions and honour regional elders and this limited edition vinyl includes a 12-page bilingual booklet with extra background.

Review: This release feels like a collision of worlds, where abstract textures and rhythmic intricacies are forced into a dialogue with more accessible forms of electronic music. The opening track sets a tone of strange, mysterious propulsion, yet never fully gives in to any familiar conventions. Instead, it hints at a narrative unfoldingia journey, almost, where sound and intention coalesce but never fully resolve. It's a slow burn that rewards those who stick around, offering complex layers that reveal themselves gradually. Far from merely experimental, it finds a rare balance between artifice and soul, making each sonic twist feel purposeful and immersive.
