Review: The third LP in the Chypho series from Jahbulon Records, Episodes in Oceanography, features striking cover art that helps make it another collector's gem. Chypho hails from Huntsville, Alabama and the music here does what it says not he tine - profiles an underwater world in painterly and immersive ambient tones. There are plenty of microscopic details that drift by, shimmering sun rays that piece the surface and implied rhythms that sway to and fro like the shifting sands of the ocean floor. It's a real soother for the soul but a great bit of nourishment for the mind.

Review: Chypho is on a roll with this super trio of albums on Jahbulon Records. The second album in the Episodes in Oceanography series, is another must-cop for ambient lovers and it is enhanced by striking cover art and great mastering. Hailing from Huntsville, Alabama, Chypho's music vividly explores an underwater world through immersive ambient tones and this edition captures subtle, microscopic details in deft melodies, with bright keys breaking the surface and supple rhythms swaying like ocean currents. It's a soothing journey for the soul, offering both relaxation and nourishment for the mind, and is a tranquil, yet thought-provoking place to get lost. Very nice indeed.

Review: Generations of modular might fold in on themselves as legendary Buchla pioneer Suzanne Ciani patches into accomplished French synthesist Jonathan Fitoussi for this outstanding album on Obliques. The title is clearly a tribute to Morton Subotnick, whose own Silver Apples Of The Moon is a true ground zero for West Coast synth albums and as you might surmise Ciani and Fitoussi opt to create something more shapely and inviting than the wild, brilliantly alien tonal mutations Subotnick conjured up back in the 60s. If you're familiar with either artist's work you won't be disappointed, as exquisitely rendered melodic flourishes, delicate spatial processing and subtle textural shifts unfurl around your ears across these eight beautiful pieces of synth perfection.

While not their debut studio set - 'Motion' appeared three years before - it was undoubtedly the album in which Jason Swinscoe and company perfected their widescreen, string-laden and ultra-atmospheric blend of neo-jazz and downtempo. As this re-mastered and lightly expanded anniversary edition proves, the album remains a timeless classic. It's peppered with genuine highlights, with our picks including Fontella Bass hook-up 'All That You Are' (a slow-burn, emotive, downtempo jazz gem), the jazz-funk influenced dancefloor workout 'Flite' (also featured in bonus 'original mix' form), head-nodding hip-hop-goes-jazz gem 'All Things To All Men' (featuring Roots Manuva in his pomp) and 'Man With The Movie Camera', which started life as a new soundtrack to a classic silent movie.

Review: cLOUDDEAD's debut album, a compilation of six 10" EPs released between 2000 and 2001, remains a quintessential example of abstract hip-hop. This expansive 3xLP, characterised by its dense, enigmatic soundscapes and avant-garde lyrics, has profoundly influenced a range of sub-genres such as cloud rap, hauntology, and lo-fi hip-hop. The trioiWhy?, Doseone, and Odd Nosdamiemerged from Cincinnati's vibrant underground scene, marked by events like Scribble Jam, and later moved to the Bay Area, where they helped establish the Anticon collective. Despite their shift to the West Coast, their Midwestern origins continued to shape their sound, rooted in the eclectic and experimental spirit of their early days. As noted in Chris Martin's liner notes, cLOUDDEAD's music was a unique blend of idiosyncratic vision and audacious experimentation. Each EP in this collection offers a distinct auditory experience. Tracks like 'Apt. A' and 'And All You Can Do Is Laugh' are emblematic of their surreal style, combining nonsensical lyrics and unconventional production. Nosdam's production seamlessly transitions from ambient textures reminiscent of Flying Saucer Attack to gritty drum breaks and esoteric samples. Review: In the late summer of 2019, DJ Rocca and Chris Coco spent time together at the intimate La Casella festival in Umbria, Italy, where they chatted about Italo disco, the Rimini/Riccione riviera in the 90s and classic Italian clubs. Inspired by their conversations and imagined memories of scenes they weren't part of, they set out to make the music which over time, evolved into CocoRocca DiscoTeca, an imaginary retro-futuristic club blending past influences with future possibilities. It draws on dub, house and disco and is now resented on this wonderfully escapist full length which starts slow and dreamy, raises the pulse then slows down to a nice emotive finish. A fine reimagine of some classic sounds.

Review: Balearic scene stalwarts Chris Coco and DJ Rocca are old pals, with the pair first working together five years ago on an EP released by Faze Action's FAR imprint. Cocorocca, though, is their first collaborative full-length - a set that cannily combines Coco's love of fluid pianos, tactile downtempo grooves and sun-soaked ambient textures with DJ Rocca's passion for dubby basslines, moon-lit low-tempo nu-disco, starry Balearic synth-pop and the trippy and psychedelic ethos of Italy's 1980s Afro-cosmic scene. As a result, there's plenty of subtle variety on show - compare, for example, the dubbed-out slow acid oddness of '303/808' with the sunset-ready dancefloor colour of 'Sunshine Love' and the slap bass wielding dub disco madness of 'Night Dubbin' - as well as plenty club-ready material.

Review: Balearic DJs Chris Coco and George Solar have been making tunes together fora couple of years after first meeting at Ibiza Sonica radio. They soon hit it off in person and in the studio, so now we get their first album, Island Vibrations. Solar is an accomplished percussionist so he and Chris made a list of rhythms around which to loosely build each track with some of those used including Nyabinghi, Guaguanco, One Drop and Algaroba. Most were record in Ibiza with added bass from Fly and lots of organic synth work embellishing each one into this lush collection of fresh downtempo and chill out sounds.

Review: Jack Kenworthy's latest album under the longtime Moniker Colouring is a veritable headstand. Whereas his earlier projects dealt in made-up scenarios in the lyrics, Love To You Mate concerns the loss of his brother-in-law to bowel cancer and the subsequent coming-closer to his family, making this the first album to deal with a focussed, concretely personal subject matter. Continuing Colouring's post-Britpop slant, taking cues from Coldplay, Elbow and Keane through to the more electronic and contemporary influences in the genre such as James Blake and Radiohead, this is a deep-dive into a sorely-untrodden theme for indie singer-songwriter music; that of the family reuniting over the ties that truly bind.

Review: Ghostly International come through with belated double LP vinyl edition of In Decay, the second LP from Seth Haley, better known as Com Truise, which was originally issued digitally back in 2012. Here you have thirteen diverse tracks ranging from funky, boogie-inspired drum machine soul to more watery soundscapes and creative little collages. The opener itself, "Open", is a majestic ride into the sun. The successive track, "84 Dreamin", is just as good if not better, and this process repeats itself another eleven times, until the end of this epic journey into sound.

Review: The fables around this one are strong. To say the least. Corker & Conboy's album, In Leith of that Learnt Later was apparently recorded in a converted carpark in Battersea. Melding together cinematic post-rock, adult lullabies, dub-by folk, and new age, it's a marvel of escapist listening that transports you far from the brutality of the concrete London it was born into, out to some field in England or other, and then onwards to plains we are yet to become familiar with. On this two-tracker that sense of adventure remains very much in tact. Purelink steps up with a remix that could be the soundtrack to your next sensory depravation tank prep or cacao ceremony. All earthy bubbles and light, loose, tribalistic percussion. On the flip, find one of the originals from the LP - the lackadaisical guitar motifs of 'On The Dust and The Haze'.

Review: Cornelius is the work of Japanese multi-instrumentalist Keigo Oyamada and he returned last year with the highly anticipated album Dream in Dream, his first full-length release since 2017's Mellow Waves. By blending avant-garde jazz, soulful r&b and psychedelic electronics, the album creates a breezy, sun-soaked soundscape and after that Cornelius gained international fame with Fantasma, which was standout for its cut-and-paste style akin to Beck and The Beastie Boys. Often compared to Brian Wilson for his intricate production, Cornelius has worked with artists like Blur and MGMT and Dream in Dream continues his innovative work with angular guitars, lush synths, and syncopated drums for a bright yet contemplative sound.

Review: For his seventh studio release 'Dream in Dream', Cornelius (Keigo Oyamada) continues his genre-hopping streak, carving out new space for his sonic explorations. Best known for shaping Japan's alternative music scene and crafting intricate soundscapes, Oyamada's latest effort is a hazy, rhythmically adventurous blend that flirts with ambient jazz, r&b, and a dash of retro-futurist electronics. His knack for blending disparate elements into something cohesive remains intact. Opening the record, his signature use of angular guitars and tight synth layers dances around syncopated beats, pulling listeners into a dreamlike groove. But there's more at play than surface-level nostalgia or easy listening. While many might remember the cut-and-paste genius of 'Fantasma', or his remixes for artists like Blur and MGMT, here Oyamada seems more interested in texture and atmosphere than in outright hooks. Despite a nod to 70s synth influences, this isn't a direct callback to any specific era. 'Dream in Dream' unfolds like a wandering conversationiimprovised in parts, yet controlled in its overall direction. The songs balance bright, airy tones with moments of contemplation, capturing the warmth of the past while remaining firmly planted in today's soundscapes. A steady, thoughtful progression for Cornelius, offering something both familiar and unexpected.

He traversed several different sound worlds with equal aplomb from bright pop to sludge metal via IDM. Under his Cosmic AC alias he manages to mix up equal parts ambient bliss with breakbeat action, raw techno and emotive house. The standouts of this Continuations album come thick and fast from the high speed jungle breaks of 'Blue Whirl' to the jazzy downtempo delights of 'Hedge Clipper' and plenty in between. See also the majestic pop serenity of closer 'WTWIRDYMTBOWSA.'
