Reconbination EP
Reconbination EP (limited 12")
Cat: FE 058. Rel: 19 May 21
Techno
  1. Spatial Plucks (5:13)
  2. Xsd (4:55)
  3. Reconbination (3:17)
  4. Rev (Stack Refix) (4:01)
Review: Manchester's Robbie Mecrow is an acid and electro specialist who is therefore a perfect fit for the interplanetary sounds of Furthur Electronix. This marks his fourth EP on a fourth different label in three years, which might be a slow pace but the music is worth waiting for. There is roomy, IDM inspired atmosphere on 'Spatial Plucks' then more jungle leaning breaks and glistening metallic surfaces on 'Xsd'. The fantastic 'Reconbination' might just be the EP highlight however with its broad bass, twisted drum loops and forlorn sense of mood. 'Rev' (Stack Refix) is an airy, ambient laced closer that suspends you in a techno dreamscape.

Review: Amid a ton of releases on the likes of Wrong Island and CPU in recent months, the legendary recovering optimist Automatic Tasty now flings a full album upside our faces. His ninth long'un, as always it's both jaunty and contemplative in equal measure as he tweaks his machines to create bubbling little narratives that weave in and out of the shades. At one moment you're weeping to a sartorial lament ("Illegal Trousers"), the next you're skipping on clouds on a secret level in your favourite childhood side-scroller ('One Of These Days'), the next you're doing the locomotion on Tomorrow's World ('Dialup') the next you're rolling out the lino for a slo-mo robo dance ('Scaldy Fiver') Slinky, cheery, honest analog fun; You'll Never Work In This Town Again isn't a threat... It's a promise

The Beltran Love EP
Cat: FE 039. Rel: 08 Sep 20
Techno
  1. Love Freq (6:40)
  2. Epic Soulmate (7:54)
  3. Controller (6:38)
  4. El Conquistador (6:45)
Review: Michigan artist John Beltran has long embodied the evocative, richly textured techno sound that has so long been synonymous with Detroit. He is in particularly majestic form on this one, however, with opener 'Love Freq' bringing scintillating hi hats and synths over dancing beats that are brilliantly restless. 'Epic Soulmate' has that sombre synth sound that has you gaming off into the distance, rueful for a love you once knew, then 'Controller' brings you back down to earth on a more punishing groove laced with darker bass notes. The manic and freeform 'El Conquistador' is a perfect end to this EP, which journeys much further than most techno albums ever do.

Review: As the title suggests, this must-check compilation from TB-303 abuser Chris Moss Acid gathers together the cream of the crop from the Bournemouth-based artist's long running, digital-only "Lo-Fi House" series of EPs. There's plenty to set the pulse racing across the ten-track, triple-vinyl set, from the sweaty ghetto-acid bump of "LFHT14 (Pump It)" and off-key acid psychedelia of "LFHT19 (Out of Your Mind)", to the stomping techno menace of "LFHT18 (Violet-le-Duc-Acid II)", Phuture-esque "LFHT7 (Acid 22)" and the suitably epic, album-closing celebration of wayward electronics, aggressive bass and jacking drums that is "LFHT12 (The Wizard of Meudon)".

Review: Cult 48 has been methodically unfurling a staggeringly impressive catalogue over the past year or two, with a spread of self-released CDrs subsequently released by Furthur Electronix who clearly know good electro when they hear it. To be honest this music borders more on Skam Records-esque electronica, taking machine funk into experimental territory without losing sight of the inspirational source material. On Underground Signals From An Unknown Place, you can hear the ghost of Boards Of Canada on 'Orange Moss 89' and earliest Autechre twitching through 'Nothing Is Lost Now', but those are obvious reference points and shouldn't detract from Cult 48's own overall artistic stamp. With plenty of variety across the release and an unrelenting high watermark for quality, this is essential listening for any lover of crunchy, leftfield electro.

Review: German duo Extrawelt step away from their long time label home of Cocoon here for thew first time. In landing on Further Electronix they venture into more unrestrained musical territory and take full advantage of that across a double album of powerful, hardware based tracks. There is still some big room techno fair, but also more silky breakbeats, futuristic electro and plenty of grey areas in between. The drum programming on 'Ungerade' is an early standout while fans of harder tackle will prefer the manic energy of dystopian banger 'Schutt & Asche.'

Review: Responsible for the production of many classic UK hardcore records throughout the early '90s, Ron Wells' style of production is instantly recognisable. Having a multitude of releases under the Jack Smooth moniker as well as 20 Hurts, 4 Reel and Celestial Circuits in recent times, his latest one here comes courtesy of Brighton's Furthur Electronix titled PH Scales - the third part in a series. Features four cuts rich in old school analogue soul: from the emotive acid wiggle of 'Dreamstate' or 'Erecaecous' on the A side, which will hypnotise you into submission with their suave 303 antics to a backdrop of ethereal elements. Over on the flip, it's all about the evocative sunset breaks of "September".

Review: Following up some great releases by Armec, Placid One and Jack Smooth, Brighton imprint Furthur Electronix pushes full steam ahead with its prolific output this year. Melbourne-based Lou Karsh of LKR Records presents their 50th release titled Melodies From The Inside. It features three different moods and grooves for your listening pleasure: from the booming sci-fi futuristic electro of 'Efthemia' on side A, through to the evocative and loved-up sunset breaks of 'Internal Mind Games' on the flip, followed by the slo-mo hypnotic techno of 'Ups & Downs' which is utterly sublime.

Review: Furthur Electronix has always been a highly recommended label but they seem to be in a purple patch right now with a wealth of essentials releases all dropping in quick fashion. It is Kreggo who steps up this time with a new limited run 12" that follows his last on the label last year. The Milan based artist is eclectic and throughly underground and is the brain behind the Art-Aud label and the cult Secret Rave series. His electro sound here is raw and rugged, with bumping drums, fixing synths and flashes of acid all making these standout cuts.

  1. Antio Zoi (TGRCCC) (3:40)

Review: Brighton imprint Furthur Electronix continues full steam ahead with its prolific output this year, and it's a big week for them. Alongside a great EP by Aussie Lou Karsh, we have this new one by Greek producer George Kontogiannidis aka Pera Sta Ori, who has racked up some impressive releases thus far on Musar, Brokntoys and Yellow Machines. As on previous works, the Sick Apian EP further explores Kontogiannidis' love of classic UK rave sounds. For instance A side cut 'Antio Zoi (TGRCCC)' utilises pitch shifted hardcore breaks underpinned by a dystopian electro atmosphere. Over on the flip, its '95 all over again on the breakneck junglist stepper 'Xypna' followed by the complex and hypnotic riddims of 'KodS0520 Fyllorroo'.

Review: Belgian producer Maximilien Vincent knows how to serve up superbly downtempo ambient acid tracks that bathe you in glorious sound. Tinged with a little 90s nostalgia but never overbearingly so, he is back now with more of his soothing sounds on the Furthur Electronix label. Slow Motion Race kicks off with a vocal that could be from a Pet Shop Boys record and a beat that sounds very Moby. 'Summer Rains' then soars on a celestial breakbeat with more distant acid textures and 'Ambivalent' dips its toe into a more dark jungle sound but stuffed with sonic details for the mind.

Review: Anil Lal and Majkel's cult Furthur Electronix label is a hardcore favourite amongst real heads, and is something akin to a modern day for fans of Warp, Rephlex or Skam. It deals in fad-free and forward looking electronic sounds from another dimension and this bumper 19 track collection is a perfect overview of that. It kicks off with Mu Ziq's crusty electronics and then surges on a wave of cosmic energy through Hamatsuki' acid laced electro, dreamy post rave breaks from Kreggo and futurist jungle from DJ Mudak 2000. After the ambient laced first disc, things get a little deeper and darker later on with Lou Karsh's 'Liveelectro001' head melter a particular favourite.
