I'm Here (5:17)
Review: US house music legend Teddy Douglas is welcomed back onto Nervous Records for a rare full-length album on the label. I'm Here is Douglas' first full-length solo album following his esteemed stints with Basemen Boys and Jasper St. Co., and it's so far been hailed as one of his all-time career-defining greats, bursting will both originality and intertextuality, yet not straying too far from his characteristic Baltimore house sound either. Across the album he's pulled together an array of heavyweight international vocal talent, including UK vocal diva Pauline Taylor; Danish award winning folk and blues artist Richard Farrell; Chi Town hip house legend, Fast Eddie; dance music vocal queen Ultra Nate; up-and-coming Brit soul talent Sipho; and Buckshot from Blackmoon appearing under the name BDI Thug; and through this expansive penchant for teamwork he's conjured up a whimsical record, yet one still respectful of East Coast dance musical tradition, as ever riffing on the afterglows of a golden era yet still finding incredibly compelling fusions between the kicks.

My Inspiration (5:43)
Soul Brother 88 (7:02)

Random Fragments (7:07)
Review: Earlier in the year, James Baker brought his long-running ReKaB project to Andy Vaz and Alessandro Vaccaro's long-running Yore imprint for the first time. This speedy sequel is similarly assured and quietly impressive. He begins by wrapping vintage drum machine beats and an angular, LFO-style bassline in unfeasibly spacey chords, bubbly electronics and woozy vocal samples ('My Inspiration'), before treating us to a warmer and more melodious slab of analogue deep house loveliness ('Soul Brother 88'). Over on the flip, 'Future Times' sees Baker pepper a hypnotic deep house beat in intergalactic, Motor City-influenced synth sounds and bubbly acid motifs, while title track 'Random Fragments' is another classy, far-sighted deep house-meets-deep techno number rich in superbly spacey sounds. Music for the head and the feet!

Review: After years spent doing his own thing on the Drab Queen imprint, Tom Kerridge AKA Girls of the Internet made his bow on Classic back in 2022. A few superb singles later and he's ready to release his first full-length excursion for the Luke Solomon-helmed imprint, his fourth in total. Heavy on club-ready songs - mostly delivered by guest vocalists including Anelisa Lamosa, Shiv, Aliysha Joy and ALLKNIGHT - When I Was Lost I Found Myself is a fully-formed vision that wraps deep house and light-touch tech-house grooves in soulful strings, neo-soul references and nods to disco, two-step garage, orchestrated soul jams and much more besides. There's plenty of playable material on show, but it works just as well as something to listen to in headphones, in the car or at home. A genuine triumph.

Review: If you have ever wondered what a German oompah band might sound like if they were doing low-slung and playful house music then check out 'Ofterschwang' which is one of Jurgen Paape's finest and silliest moments. Thankfully it also makes the long-time Kompakt servant's new Kompilation. It comes across four sides of vinyl and features some of his best bits from over the last 20 years. It is a wide-reaching and often leftfield collection with piano pieces, loopy disco gems, loved-up deep house sounds and steamy and seductive vocal minimal music in the case of 'So Wird Die Zeit Gemacht'. If nothing else this proves what an underrated and unique creative mind Paape really is.

Review: Jackies Music Records celebrates a successful first year with a new special edition vinyl record, featuring five iconic numbers from the back catalogue. Retrospectively looking back, we're met with five still-fresh ones from their ambitious 2024, includeing handpicks from Todd Terry, Piem, CASSIMM, Angelo Ferreri, and DJ W!ld. Embodying the mood of mid-dance tension, at which point we're likely well into the mix and sweating our glands off (such paradoxes are not impossible), the best of this pick have got to be Terry's 'Heartbeat', a swarthily knocking groove complete with an angelic, cardiovascular vocal, and W!ld's lo-fi hip slip, 'Underdog', the lyrics on which we'll be spending at least a good week trying to decipher.

Review: Freerange's City To City series returns with its second edition, this time spotlighting Lisbon. Known for its stunning views, beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife, perhaps one of the city's best-known hotspots is the iconic Lux Fragile, which has shaped the city's sound since the late 90s. Longtime resident DJs from Lisbon are now gaining global traction; to butterfly-net the essence of the coastal metropolis, this new mix LP hears six original tracks from local talents, chief among whom are Megatronic, progressor and ambassador for the city, and Yen Sung & Photonz, two names closely tied to the circuit's deeper-underground corners.A

Review: As a paid-up member of Seth Troxler's extended Visionquest family, it's perhaps no surprise that Detroit new-schooler Lee Curtiss's contribution to the Watergate club's mix series is brimming with warm, touchy-feely tech-house. From start to finish, Watergate 08 sounds like an audio advert for the Visionquest sound; that pleasingly melodic fusion of heavy low-end, off-kilter synth pop posturing and tactile, MDMA-friendly electronic grooves. It's the sort of effortlessly delicious sound that lends itself well to a mix album, and as a result Watergate 08 is a lovely listen. With superb contributions from Footprintz, Maceo Plex, No Regular Play, Kim-Ann Foxman and Curtiss himself, there's plenty to get excited about.

Review: Carsten Jost is the DJ and Producer alias of David Lieske, co-founder of Dial Records. His latest collection of functional, ultra-utilitarian techno tracks here is essentially a slew of music for Moon exploration. Peaceful, raw and wonky techno tunes with a blue temperament are firmly arranged across 10 portions of wax; all carry the comparative sense of having less gravity weighing them down than techno made on Earth; it's techno made at 1.62 m/s² compared to our 9.807. Standouts include the alien voice cameos on 'IV' and the subterranean cave excursion that is 'VII'.

Review: Freeez founder John Rocca made these cuts between London and New York City from 1982 to 1987. Once Upon A Time in N.Y.C is a pioneering compilation of proto-electro and house cuts that, for this reissue, come on nice splattered orange vinyl. As well as the six standouts on the original abut, there is also a bonus 7" with two extra cuts, one of which is the international hit 'I.O.U.' Elsewhere, jams like 'Englishman In New York', 'I Dub U' and 'I Want It To Be Real' all still bang as brilliantly now as they did almost 40 years ago.

Review: Things were different back in 2001 and the dance music world was less attuned to the responsibilities it has towards the marginalised communities that birthed the genre back in the 80s. For that reason, it's unlikely any new compilation featuring music by mostly white artists would be called Africanism Allstars these days, but alas that was the case with this collection when it was originally released. Title aside, the music stands up with a chunky house sound and plenty of tribal grooves featuring big names like DJ Gregory, Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclair and Soga amongst others.

Review: London-born, LA-based duo Eli & Fur present their second ever album, Dreamscapes, finding inspiration in the transformations that occur in the mid-to-after-rave hours of dusk and dawn. Fleshing out the sonic interpretation of the veil between self and surroundings, which grows thin in those early hours, Dreamscapes is a 15-track homage to the cathartic musings of our most solitary wanderings of all corners of the night and the flashes in between. From the slowly risen breakbeat transcendents of 'Missing You' to the moody progressive burbles of 'My Reflection', this is a subtly impressive album, one that holds fast to the deep house and tech in which Eli & Fur have always worked, yet unfolds its dreamiest and bleariest ends.

Review: Crosstown Rebels continues its spell of dance albums releases with a fresh one from Oceanvs Orientalis (Safak Oz Kutle), Portrait Of The Obscure. After three superb singles on the label over the past four months, this nine-track LP offers a comprehensive exploration of the Istanbul-based talent's rich, globally-infused, captivating sound. As if to bottle the essence of the awe of travel, either everyday-real or astral - and the personal developments and realizations that come of it - onto a single record, Portrait Of The Obscure skirts the possible limits of progressive dance, fleshing out a talent for layering that we'd wager many artists only ten years or so ago would've thought impossible. Just listen to the hullabaloo that is 'Neutrality'; despite the name, it's hardly neutral at all, coming as an immense positivisation of moving parts and godlike sonic entities, which sound to dance around a central kick axis, one that we're surprised Oceanvs was still able to fit into the mix.

Review: Embark on a journey through Berlin's pulsating house music scene with Italian-born, Berlin-based Luca Olivotto, who infuses his beats with the energy of the city's underground while blending in his Mediterranean roots. This album encapsulates the essence of Olivotto's musical universe: a fusion of cultures, a celebration of diversity, and a testament to the universal language of music. Highlights include 'I'm (Not) Sorry,' which delivers a smooth New York house sound, embodying late-night beauty with its uplifting and deep tones. It's a perfect combination for those seeking a soulful experience. 'Don't Change' offers another excellent eyes-closed house burner, maintaining the album's deep and introspective vibe. Also, 'You & Me' stands out as the hands-up moment in any house set with the peak energy and communal spirit of the dance floor at its heart. Olivotto's ability to command dancefloors as a DJ and evoke emotion as a producer shines through in this double pack.

Launching their new imprint The Moment, their new self-describedly EP marks a "gateway to new possibilities for music creation and discovery". They embark on this enterprise by way of Kiss & Forget, which begins with a filmic epic song for strings and techno pulse - 'Saturday' - whose two parts set the scene of a romantic diversion in sound, yet ultimately one tempered by loss and entropy. The album moves just as synthpoppy and progressive at points too, from the ensuing 'Love Will Save Me' with, RY X to the rapturous electro-synth stretch that is 'Miracle'.

Review: Soela, the DJ and producer alias of Elina Shorokhova, channels her deep musical roots into Dark Portrait, an album that reflects both personal and global turmoil. Transitioning from her classical background into the electronic realm, Soela crafts a sonic journey that resonates with emotional depth and technical precision. The album begins with 'Unsuitable,' a track steeped in melancholic trip-hop vibes, setting an introspective tone. As Soela navigates the complex emotions surrounding her country's invasion of Ukraine, her music becomes a therapeutic outlet. This emotional intensity flows through tracks like 'Through the Windows' (featuring Francis Harris and Philipp Priebe) and 'Drowning' (with Module One), where intricate beats and ambient textures intertwine seamlessly. 'Spirits' and 'Lost In The Fog' offer haunting soundscapes that draw listeners into Soela's world, while 'February Is Not Going To Be Forever,' a collaboration with Lawrence, brings a dancefloor energy laced with a sense of urgency. The title track, 'Dark Portrait,' melds dubby rhythms with poignant melodies while the lead single, 'Even If I Ask You Stay,' showcases Soela's poignant vocal delivery amid a lush arrangement, addressing themes of escape and healing. The album concludes with 'The Darkest Hour Before Sunrise,' a hopeful and ethereal piece, blending subdued keys and strings with a sense of renewal. Dark Portrait is a deeply personal and powerful album, where Soela's rich musicality and emotional insight shine through, offering listeners both solace and inspiration.

Try My Love (5:06)
Review: For the second release on their new joint venture Mixed Signals, Henry Jones and Seance Centre founder Brandon Hocura have decided to offer-up a selection of tracks from Harold Lucious' overlooked 1990 album "Connected". Lucious' far-sighted blend of soulful house, new jack swing and what us Brits would call street soul comes to the fore on opener "Let The Feelin' - Turn You Out", a stripped-back, synth-heavy chunk of deep house-soul, and on the much more upbeat club cut "What Does It Take". It can also be heard, too, on delicious flipside opener "I Like It", where Lucious' layered vocals ride a tactile, lo-fi deep house groove. Our pick of the bunch though is sumptuously slow closing cut "Try My Love", which is much closer in tone to street soul.

The artist himself is obsessed with freedom and his sound sits somewhere in a nether region between house, jazz, hip-hop and minimal. Carefully layered and precisely structured as it takes listens on a colourful and kalaedescopic journey through different moods and grooves with plenty of worldly influences, it's the sort of deftly designed album that works both at home and in the club and packs in plenty of profound moments of emotion.

Sentimental reflects Carlita's musical evolution in recent times and offers a new dimension beyond her club-focused tracks. Review: Experimental deep house superstar Bella Boo returns to Studio Barnhus for her latest album DreamySpaceyBlue, and expands outwards into a more varying tempo range in the process. If album titles are anything to go by, this one should give you an indication of the kind of sonics you'll hear when popping this 180g cream vinyl record on the belt-driven plate. Moving in more bittersweet, heartstring-tugging directions after a jankier set of EP movements years prior, the likes of 'Can't Stop' and 'Heartbeat/Into The Night' move through every influence from Jersey bounce to breaks, pitting deeply affected vocals and spacious synth bubblings against a thematic backdrop of "dark times (demanding) love, healing and forgiveness."

Review: After initially reserving much of his music for his own Tartan label, Wallace has been on plenty of fine sojourns to other top labels of late including CWPT's from Palms Trax, Studio Barnhus and Rhythm Section. Now he makes his biggest statement yet with a double album on Mule Musiq that draws on everything in his arsenal. His deft melodic touch and innocent synth work defines the first couple of clean and airy cuts while his knack for an unusual rhythm defines the loopy and hypnotic 'Midnight On The Mountain,' 'By The River' is a gorgeous deep house cut with eastern melodies and 'Bubbles' is pure dreaming material for zoned out sessions. A fine work from the talented Wallace.

Review: The new album from the German producer offers a captivating auditory journey, blending unique and genre-defying styles that transcend trends. Described as a 64-minute return trip to space, the album mixes psychedelic, unconventional elements with a rich tapestry of sound, showcasing the artist's ability to create his own musical universe. The work draws on a deep synergy between the producer and collaborators, offering slow grooves, treated vocals and passionate declarations in tracks like the flamenco-esque 'Pure Love'. The artist's approach to production is a slow-cooked, evolving process, allowing the music to transform over time. Known for his career in hip-hop and his involvement in electronic pop, the producer's distinctive style continues to shine, offering a profound and cerebral dance experience. Following a successful collaboration with Roisin Murphy, this new album promises to be another standout project in the artist's esteemed catalogue, delivering music that is both deeply personal and universally appealing.

Arttu - "Can't Get Down" (feat Kaye)
Hakim Murphy - "ES1"
Review: Philpot's Traxworx series got off to a blinding start earlier this year with the dust down from Roman Rauch and label regular Ike and it looks to be quite the promising endeavour if the line-ups remain as strong as this second duel featuring Arttu and Hakim Murphy. Neither artist really needs a formal introduction here and both are well suited for the floor focused nature of this series. Arttu is first up with "Can't Get Down" a collaboration with Kaye that bounces along with loose and deadly intent - if you liked the Geeeman stuff on Clone you will love this pappy, especially when that sax comes in! On the flip Innerspace Halflifer Hakim Murphy goes for the abstract approach on "ES1" which features some superb drum edits.

Review: Described as a "deeply personal and a reflection of the journeys I've taken-both literal and musical," by its creator, veteran producer Brian d'Souza, Auntie Flo's latest travels from Nairobi to Mexico City, Havana and Waiheke Island and celebrates migration, freedom, and connection. Free is certainly the word you'd used to describe his groovy, instinctual but hard to classify sound, fusing the electronic with the organic on the sound palate and utilising everything from loose deep house grooving to Afrobeat, jazz and most things in between. From the YMO-esque 'Nighthawk' to the lush, jittery synthpop of 'Bird's Eye View', the juddering groove of 'Walk DF' - imagine Kraftwerk with an African lilt to the rhythm section - it's varied, quality-packed and transformative.

Review: Roman Flugel is back with his seventh full length titled Eating Darkness. The nine tracks were created during the coronavirus lockdown of 2020, and are testament to the Frankfurt legend's penchant for mixing elements of pop with sounds of the underground - a scene he has been affiliated with since the early '90s. A variety of moods and grooves are all delivered in his idiosyncratic style: from the woozy and broken slow burner 'Chemicals', to the majestic and spellbinding dancefloor drama of 'Wow' or the raw hardware acid jack of 'Jocks And Freaks' which harks to his days as Alter Ego. Elsewhere, there's the heartfelt and bittersweet ambient house of 'Cluttered Homes' and the downbeat bliss of closing epic 'Charles'.

Review: Etymology is the study of the history and formation of words in language. Rarely do we find an artist, not least a somatically inclined dance music artist, concerned with such disciplines; usually that strand of things is left to us critics. Yet despite the titular allusion to said verbal science, further references to words on this release by Stekke are scant. In fact, 'Etymology' the track is as wordless as a mute, preferring a pure 120-ish BPM movement of rumbly and understated proportions, emphasising process over object. Flicky hats and unassuming chord hits predominate; we infer that it's the following remixes from Daniel Paul, Gari Romalis, Satoshi Tomiie and Losoul that are the real sonic cognates of interest here, spanning fidgeting minimal trance etymons and derivative dub lexemes. We return to a radical root on 'Downbeat', which features Audio Werner on a muted workout for hand drum and synth swell.

Review: Magic Number is Ross Hillard, a downtempo and orchestral composer whose engineering and bass playing can be heard on an array of releases, most notably for the likes of his own house favourites including Louie Vega, DJ Spen, Kerri Chandler, Lay-Far and Atjazz. Now debuting his first record on the latter artist's eponymous label, Badly Written Songs sounds like a slice of humble pie, but it's actually well-thought out title: in Hillard's own words, "(it's) a tongue-in-cheek reference to how transient electronic music can be." Thus, writing songs in this genre might not have been the most sensible and sustainable idea - but we all love house music, so we put everything into it, hoping that people don't discard it too soon. True to an engineer's tastes, the album is ultra-dynamic and bright throughout, serving up a consistent guest-vocal steeze reminiscent of Charles Webster or Herbert's gravitas.

Review: South London's Medlar returns to Delusions of Grandeur at the peak of his production powers, showing up with a distinctly refined sonic palette on the brilliantly expansive LP, Islands. Known for his deep-cut edits, genre-hopping productions and steady underground presence, he's pulled together a cast of collaborators including Dele Sosimi, Rebekah Reid, Arnau Obiols and more. The record builds on years spent engineering and producing for others, drawing on those skills to deliver something more personal than ever. Blending live instruments, 80s-inspired electronics and club-ready low end, it's less sample-based than past work but still rooted in the recognisable Medlar spirit. Highlights come thick and fast, including the blissed-out opener 'Take A Trip', the wigged-out exoticism of 'Yeah', the acid thrust of 'Luv Interlude' and the emotion-rich Balearica of 'Ibiza'. Top marks.

Review: On the debut EP 'We Are The Ones/Fire/Forever', Chicago DJ and all-out living legend Rahaan collaborates with an equally talented group of musicians: Marcus J. Austin on lead vocals, Nancy Clayton on backing vocals, Carnell C. Newbill (also known as Spike Rebel) on keyboards and backing vocals, Todd Swope on guitar, and Lou Terry on bass. Together, the outfit known as The Ones create an extended three-track EP of transcendent proportions, drawing on the avaricious world-passion for music and life heard in the joyous chasms between psychedelia, Afrobeat and disco. Bridging these precipices by way of a vast, suspensory dancefloor held together by firmly mixable kick drums serving as rivets, Rahaan produces and mixes a viscerally eye-popping set of devotionals here. From the impassioned beatitudes and thanksgivings of 'We Are The Ones', to the desirous chic-funk drum circle envisaged on 'Fire' and the eternal gospel-rock-tinged disco-soul ablution 'Forever' (a special favourite of ours), this is a holy chrism in record form.

Review: ANAN is a project by DJs Roberto Agosta and Massimo Napoli and it takes its name from their surnames, repeated twice. Their new album is inspired by jazz, 70s psychedelia, Afrobeat, cumbia and soul and was recorded in a space in Catania, Sicily, where they melded those inspirations into a versatile and innovative sound. The session musicians manage to really lay down some deep melodies to give the album a live session feel. Tracks like 'Eden' and 'Naif' combine cinematic jazz with African influences, while 'Eros' blends Ethiopian and Indian cultures. 'Mind' offers a hypnotic cumbia and 'Etna' evokes spiritual psychedelia. The album includes also collaborations with The Invisible Session which take things to even higher spiritual planes.

This second 12" expands on that set, serving up six more of the New York-based producer's favourite re-rubs. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the rolling Cuban house business of his Megablast tweak ('La Isla'), and a low-slung, d&b-influenced Latin breaks take on OVEOUS & QVLN, to a suspenseful slab of psych-funk-goes house (the New Yorker's tweak of 'Yiorti' by Antois Antonio), and even some bouncy, low-tempo Balkan beats (Balkan Bump's 'Codek America'). The title track, 'Paraiso,' merges slowed-down Acid and Flamenco guitar with claps, creating a timeless vibe. 'Polvo Mineral' offers mystery with ethereal pads, robust drum fills, and chanting. The Vros is a collaboration between three Chilean brothers who use traditional instruments and synths to blend hypnotic sounds from house, electronica and world music. Each track symbolises an element - Earth, Wind, Fire and Water - with the tracks' connection to nature encouraging self-reflection, whilst also getting your feet moving. 'Space Marimba' is perfect for outdoor dancing with its happy marimba melodies and elastic bass, 'Don't Be Afraid' is pure Balearic house bliss and 'Fusion' brings subtle trance inducing chords while 'Release Your Mind' is a deep, mind-bending opener.
