Review: Italy's has long been home to musicians keen to blur the boundaries between jazz, jazz-funk, soul and broken beat. Padova based duo Huma are the latest to explore similar sonic territory. 'Selva', their second single, is naturally musically expansive and laden with sonic detail, but never loses sight of the importance of groove and vibe. Opener 'Free and Lost', a suitably summery blend of house-influenced dancefloor drums, Kaidi Tatham synth sounds, Kyoto Jazz Massive pianos and loose-limbed, cymbal-heavy jazz breaks, is thrillingly picturesque, while 'An Ordinary Life' is a more bass-heavy chunk of minimalist jazz-soul. Title track 'Selva', meanwhile, is a sun-splashed, off-kilter downtempo number full of evocative strings, starry synth melodies and wayward bass.
