The Minimal Wave Tapes: J Rocc Edits Vol 2

Felix Kubin - "Japan Japan" (J Rocc edit)
Ohama - "The Drum" (J Rocc edit)
Mark Lane - "Who's Really Listening" (J Rocc edit)
Deux - "Game & Performance" (J Rocc edit)
Review: J Rocc steps up for the second and final installment of his Minimal Wave Tapes Edits, once again appearing on weighty vinyl and offering solitude for those DJs out there whose attempts to drop the likes of Ohama and Deux are frustrated by the inherent lack of quantized drum programming. J Rocc's edit of Felix Kubin's "Japan Japan" is a case in point, originally featuring on the recent second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes, the rolling 4x4 electro groove that filled the opening bars soon mutated rhythmically into bastard vocoder pop. J Rocc wisely extends this opening loop before switching into the madness and then smoothing back into that groove. From here, J Rocc adds some extra weight to the titular elements of Ohama's "The Drum", teases out the inner uneasy primal techno workings of "Who's Really Listening?" from Mark Lane and f*cks about with Deux's "Game & Performance" brilliantly.

Review: German disco might be most closely associated with Boney M but in fact it offers so much more. The scene was initially influenced by the influx of American soldiers camped in the county during the 70s. They listened to far away radio sounds from the US which were always steeped in disco and the locals caught on. Black Pearl Records now showcase how the scene has evolved over the years: and t is vibrant and inventive with its own distinctive characteristics if this i anything to go by. This collection has a cross-section of sounds that go from the classic 70s disco years to cosmic, NDW, synth pop and more. Disco De:Light

Review: Under his Machinegewehr guise, Rotterdam's finest, Silas Schletterer, has released a smattering of show-stopping synth-oriented EPs, blowing his many contemporaries in the style out of the park. Life now comes as his fourth album in the style, incorporating cleverly inviting melodies, clean percussion and samples, all to make up a definite dancefloor favourite. The pulsations, the throb, of Machinegewehr persists as ever, but there is a considered melancholy that brings a bittersweet balance to pieces such as 'Life', which emphasise the melodic, hazier side of Machinegewehr's sound over its more hard-hitting parts . A welcome return from a multifaceted musician.

Review: Last seen on Bordello A Parigi, Rotterdam artist Machinegewehr makes the logical move to fledgling local concern Electronic Emergencies, a label that has really blossomed since launching with a Das Ding LP! Consisting of four tracks, The Unforgiven commences in strident Italo fashion with the title track, a real muscle-laden dancefloor number with just the right dash of electro drama and some foreboding hushed vocals. From here, Machinegewehr delves deeper into the electro sound on "You Are", whilst Gees Voorhees adds her distinct vocals to the stripped back highlight "The Geist Line". Machinegewehr heads for the dancefloor on final cut "Shield".

Ital - "From A Dream" (Magic Touch remix)
Review: The art of the humble back scratch is kept well and truly alive on the latest 100% Silk missive which sees regular Mi Ami conspirators Magic Touch and Ital go toe to toe, each delivering an original track along with complementing remixes. Magic Touch aka Daniel Palermo is first up with the throwback rush inducing vibes of "Anywhere U Want Me" a track dominated by the dusty treatment of pianos and swinging drums and complemented by the spiralling gospel vocals that gradually rise through to dominate. Ital's remix is a trippier, darker affair, adding some throb to the bass, while going freeform on the drums and powerful, classicist laser-like synth lines. You can almost feel the sweat dripping off the ceiling from this one in full, lysergic flight. McCormick's original production "From A Dream" is a box jam and a half, the frenetic drums that open proceedings not really hinting at the glorious, intense chaos that ensues with the track in full, bass heavy flight. Magic Touch really goes to town on his remix, reinventing the track as ecstasy filled Hi NRG Disco - best 100% Silk release in a hot moment!

Makaton - "Bitchin" (5:45)
SSSS - "Fault & Failure" (5:50)
Alessandro Adriani - "Bodyshocks" (4:15)
Celldod - "Springer" (4:24)
Review: RECOMMENDED
Seven Years of Delirium was originally released as a whopping 40-track digital album celebrating seven years of Berlin's Liber Null imprint, with artists such as Ontal, Repitch, Monica Hits the Ground, and Celldod featuring on the credits. Subsequently, some of those tunes have made their way to vinyl, with this logically titled outing the second instalment in the staggered wax releases.

And what an instalment it is. Efforts like 'Bodyshocks' by Alessandro Adriani define dark groove, delivering an effortlessly infectious, punch-packed dose of futurism built around a simple keyboard riff, with effects layered over to create something that feels much fuller than it is. Impossible to resist, elsewhere expect equally devastating cuts, from the sledgehammer heaviness of 'Springer' to the industrial fronted, discordant melodies of 'Fault & Failure'. Simply put, this is techno for proper heads.

Fatal Games
Review: Last seen on 100% Silk as Innergaze, the multi-talented Jason Letkiewicz returns to the Not Not Fun offshoot for a second time, as the Broken Rhythm EP allows us a further glimpse into the mind of his Malvoeaux alter ego. Those lucky few that picked up Targets, the debut release on L.I.E.S from Malvoeaux, will know what to expect here, heavily filtered house music indebted to Trax On Da Rocks era Tomas Bangalter, all coated in a syrupy sonic fuzz. The title track alone explodes with these qualities, seemingly closer to the sound of mid 90s Roule than countless copycats in recent years, whilst "Fatal Games" sounds like the follow up to "Music Sounds Better With You" that Bangalter never got round to making. Neat new artistic direction on the 100% Silk sleeve too!

Review: Manuel Darquart is the London-based New Zealander who has impressed with outings on the likes of Wolf Music Recordings, Infinite Pleasure and Seb Wildblood's Coastal Haze. This time out he serve sup big Italo house tunes for the cult white label Semi Delicious. This is music with proud synth work and nice rough-around-the-edges drums, plenty of fills, retro 80s samples and a subtle nostalgia that makes them all there potent. 'For You' is one of our favourites for its perfectly blissful post-rave ambiance over deep drums, but 'In The Club At 5 am' also perfectly lives up to its name.

Review: Roxy Music's guitar legend Manzanera has undergone a series of remixes on well heeled Dalston based fashion/sound/leisure hub LNCC. Third in the series, here we find Tokyo's Cos/Mes getting jaunty and psychedelic and altogether Chicken Lippsy over the 1982 classic "Big Dome". Meanwhile on the B, Secret Fingers have cast such a cosmic spell on "Islands" that it's almost impossible to lift a limb while you listen to it. Utter bliss, Manzanera should be proud.

Review: Kill The DJ improve Franco-Italian relations by inviting Margot Records founders Margot into the fold with the Magico Disco EP, with Ivan Smagghe having been introduced to the pair's "epic trance cheese-athon" of the title track via a James Holden DJ set. Daniel Valanti and Stefano Serafini have an individual and collective production vintage that shines through on this EP; Smagghe's aforementioned description of "Magico Disco" is pretty spot on as the track unfurls like an acid house update of Pat Cowley's iconic Donna Summer remix. Complemented naturally by some camp Teutonic titular vocal hooks! I'm A Cliche's Tel Aviv connect Red Axes add their own Italo flair on a fine accompanying remix and Margot's subsequent four productions rifle through the sort of dirgey wave sounds one expects of a Kill The DJ release.

Review: Before making her mark with 1981 minimal wave single "Cold Cafe", Australian artist Karen Marks enjoyed an eclectic career. This included spells in music journalism and band management. It's for her brief underground synth-pop career that she's best remembered, though. This all too brief career is celebrated on this five-track EP that includes every track she ever completed. Naturally the title track stands out, but there's plenty to enjoy elsewhere, too, most notably the French horn-sporting minimal wave folksiness of "You Bring These Things", a spacey and sludgy demo version of "Cold Cafe" and the bold moodiness of closing cut "Problem Page". Throughout, Marks' Kirsty MacColl style vocals stand out.

Review: Quinoa Cuts's fourth release combines some smart nostalgia with plenty of modern innovation. Side A opens with two analogue-driven tracks reminiscent of the 80s synth-wave era, so rich with electro-inspired nuances that evoke a bittersweet and rather romantic atmosphere. It transports you to a dreamlike, neon-lit past then Side B takes a darker, more introspective turn by exploring shadowy, progressive sounds. These haunting tracks come with deep, emotional layers and show Marvin to be quite the producer.

Review: Polytechnic Youth has been in hibernation for years and now is back with a run of killer releases. This limited 7" comes with fine artwork inspired by 70s era BBC design and is the latest offering from Masonic Kitchen, the solo project of Chris Walker. The music is sci-fi inspired experimental electronica with minimal synth boxes, sequences and drum machines all featuring to lend it a nice frayed hardware aesthetic. Human League and Cabaret Voltaire fans will surely find lots to love.

Review: Martin Matiske was discovered by DJ Hell as something of a child prodigy already deeply immersed in the history and present moment of electro and synth-pop, and by 2012 he had already released his debut album Robotermusik. This release on Bordello A Parigi revives one of the tracks from that album, 'Dimension Phantasy', and gives it a standalone release with some interesting remixes. Captain Mustache does a fine job of threading extra arpeggio sparkle into the track without derailing it, while Play Paul turns the track into his own bombastic synth-pop anthem which appears in vocal and instrumental versions.

Review: French label Nocta Numerica clocks up a quarter of a century of releases with a suitably stylish electro trip from Martin Matiske. The German claims to have been mixing records and making tapes since he was 10 and the maturity and high production values of his sound certainly back that up. There is a Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe feel to his brand of electro - deep and reflective in mood, with sleek lines and celestial chords that carry the mind and body away into the cosmos. It's timeless material that oozes class. Kudos to both label and artist.

Review: German artist Martin Matiske's musical journey began under the mentorship of DJ Hell, who introduced him to the decks at Gigolo label nights in Munich in 1999. Inspired by pioneers like Kraftwerk and Jean Michel Jarre, Matiske started producing for International Deejay Gigolo Records and later for Frustrated Funk, Bordello A Parigi, and the Central Processing Unit. His new EP has already had support from Dave Clarke and Helena Hauff, including for the standout track 'Moments', which blends ice-cold snares with celestial pads and retro-future synths. Legowelt's remix of 'Moments' adds an astral electro vibe, while 'Dimensional Space Travel' and 'Analogue Being' explore cinematic electro with nostalgic, playful tones.

I, Carpenter (Piers Harrison remix)
Review: Having a debut that managed to possibly be the most regularly outed track by Andrew Weatherall as he dug deep to discover the sound that resonated as A Love From Outer Space, while at the same time seemingly slipping under the radar of practically everyone else and disappearing in to relative cult obscurity is some mean feat.
Unperturbed that the odd(disco)ball that was the acidic genius of Morodor In Milan was shamefully overlooked, Maurice & Charles have again taken time out from their daytime media and art enriched lives to hunker down and offer up another take on their twisted idea of what makes people groove. In Sofa Love, their ode to the marvels and pitfalls of the mega-city, bubbling 303 again underpins a twisted lyrical journey. Set against crashing percussion, this is their peaen to la Metropole. Ably supporting it is a driving, rhythmic workout from our own Jamie Paton, taking the original and stripping everything back to jack like it should. If that frightens off the less adventurous, then I,Carpenter will perhaps offer a respite. An off-kilter, acid-funk nod to the experimentations of Eno & Byrne, this quirky gem makes you wonder, why did no-one use that sample before? To end comes a solo debut from Soft Rock's Piers Harrison. His drum heavy remix straightens things up and lets the story unfold.

Review: Not content with running Pinkman and Charlois, Rotterdam's Patrick Marsman has decided to launch a new "white label" imprint, Broken Dreams. The freshly minted label's first release comes from prolific Dutchman Nick Lapier, under the frequently used Metropolis handle. The four tracks are moody, dark and satisfying, drawing on a range of vintage influences including EBM, industrial, acid, post-punk and proto techno. He begins with the Nitzer Ebb-ish throb of "Angstpolotiek", before warming up the Cabaret Voltaire guitars and triple-time rhythms on "Drawing Closer". "Take Control" is a pitch-black, floor-friendly fusion of ragging acid lines and thumping DAF rhythms, while "Tonight" is a woozy, out-there chunk of loved-up post-punk indie-rock.

Before now their material had only been available on compilations. Review: Thus far the Vivod label has proved to be refreshingly diverse in its approach, with the meaty electro and tripped out Will Powers styled experimentation of the debut release from label boss Ali Renault markedly different to the primitive electronics and early wave of NCW's collaborative twelve with the distinctively titled Piss. It makes sense therefore that the third Vivod release from the wonderfully named Mild Peril should deviate in yet another direction, veering into the realm of resplendent, laid back analogue explorations. The latest creative incarnation of London DJ, musician and "reluctant club promoter" Christopher J Gilbert, Mild Peril digs into his digital archives for a newly remastered version of "Alpha Zone" that chugs gently through six minutes of cosmic synthscapes. Even better is the nine minute "Gamma Zone" which uses the slower pace and extended duration to veer deep into the Balearic core.

Love Is A Natural Magical Thing (Skyrager edit)
Review: Although best-known for her work as part of legendary freestyle outfit Expose, Laurie Miller released a handful of now sought-after solo singles in the mid 1980s. 'Love is a Natural Magical Thing', which originally slipped out in 1986 on a tiny, Miami-based label, is the most celebrated of these. It's undeniably brilliant - a sweet, bubbly, classy and addictive fusion of club-focused freestyle and radio-friendly synth-pop, with Miller's breathy lead vocal catching the ear even more than the track's killer bassline and chiming lead lines. On this edition, the original 12" mix comes backed with the Latin Rascals style dub mix (a genuine killer for those who love drum edits and copious amounts of delay) and a classy, stretched-out contemporary re-edit courtesy of Skyrager.

With an extensive resume that includes keyboard duties for Kill Rock Stars' 00s noise rock band The Paper Chase as well as his concurrent projects, dark post-punk-synth-rockers Nervous Curtains and darkwave duo Little Beards, Mirror Box is Kirkpatrick's first foray into the purely electronic realm. Blending together elements of Giallo moodiness, dub texture, techno propulsion, a passing nod to your favorite wave music, and a flare for the kosmiche, Mirror Box' debut release, Minimal Compliance EP, is a tour de force of the veteran musician's exploration of a wide range of influences and experience.

Review: It's been some six years since Caroline "Miss Kittin" Herve and Michel "The Hacker" Amato last delivered fresh material together. While we await further news of their long-mooted comeback, there's this tasty EP of previously unheard archive material to enjoy. Made up of tracks recorded between 1997 and '99 - when their production partnership was in its' infancy - The Lost Tracks Volume 1 contains a number of fuzzy, stylish, floor-friendly bangers, from the S&M-themed madness of opener "Leather Forever" and stripped-back electro gem "Nightlife" (a tribute to Berlin clubs of the period, apparently), to the high-tempo acid-loaded freakishness of "Loving The Alien". Top-notch sleaze.

Review: Platform 23 continue to do a great service to all seekers of furtive sounds from the DIY underground, this time shining a light on the wonderful Mode I/Q. Anyone who digs the sound of New York-tinged new wave and danceable post punk will love this record - the limber disco funk of the rhythm section meets with squalling guitar textures and dubby FX, all shot through with a hooky pop sensibility that makes this record so easy to fall in love with. "Confidence" is especially strong, as is the ramshackle party starter "Two Different Things". It seems there's no end to the overlooked gems from this golden era of independent music - it's time to catch up with Mode I/Q and file them next to your favourite disco-not-disco movers and shakers.

Review: While Jeroen Warmenhoven has delivered plenty of material of late under the DJ Overdose alias, it's been some four years since he last explored more Italo-flavoured pastures under the Model Man guise. This return for Bordello A Parigi is, then, well overdue. It's naturally rather good, with lead cut "Peeking Through The Blinds" - a raging, camp-as-Christmas Italo-disco banger straight out of the Rotterdam school - hitting hard from the off. The acid-flecked "Burning Bed" and skittering EBM cheeriness of "Antidote" could also be considered tried-and-tested dancefloor smashers, while the slower, rhythmically broken "Flying Knives" is one of the most cheerfully positive things you'll hear all year. Best of all, though, is the deep, picturesque and wonderfully slow title track.
