Sun Khosi (limited 7")
22a
Cat: 22A 035. Rel: 24 Jun 20
  1. Sun Khosi (3:55)
  2. Chrysalis (3:13)
Review: Touchingly, the A side of latest single from Ruby Rushton is a tribute to de facto bandleader Tenderlonious' father, who spent many years working in Nepal. Entitled "Sun Khosi", the track is a brilliantly summery blast of percussive, Afro-fired jazz fusion laden with sweat-soaked horn blasts, snaking Latin trumpet lines, deep Rhodes notes and inspired alto flute solos from Tenderlonious. B-side "Chrysalis" was composed by keys-player Adrian Shepherd and was influenced by the style of one of his inspirations, jazz pianist John Taylor. It's up-tempo, bold, hugely enjoyable, electric piano-heavy and sits somewhere between jazz-funk and the kind of jazz-fusion fare made famous by Azymuth.

  1. We Rollin' For You (5:06)
  2. We Rollin' For You (Max I Million & Ion Zaar remix Medley) (5:01)
Review: Terrel Wallace AKA Tall Black Guy's previous release was a delicious deep house rework of a classic Chaka Khan cut. Here he returns to his hip-hop roots with a track dedicated to the memory of legendary Swedish beat-maker DJ Devastate. In its original form, "We Rollin' For You" is a sparkling chunk of rolling, loose-limbed instrumental hip-hop rich in crunchy, off-kilter MPC drums, stirring stream samples, and brilliantly chopped and re-arranged heavenly vocals. On the flip you'll find a more experimental, sharply edited "remix medley" - in effect a series of short takes with barely time to breathe in between, which together form a coherent suite - from Max I Million and Ion Zaar.

  5. Channel & Transmission (2:00)
Review: For his first outing of 2020, Kyle Hall returns to the label he founded last year, Forget The Clock, with a suitably strong five-track missive. Check first languid opener "Shark", a splash around in crystal clear waters where simmering chords, luscious pads and glassy-eyed melodic motifs stretch out over bubbly, Latin-tinged drum machine beats and a dubby bassline. Hall makes bolder strides towards the dancefloor on lo-fi house cut "Vexed", before doffing a cap to Larry Heard and Ron Trent on the gorgeous deep house positivity of "Distant". Elsewhere, "Slam Deep" joins the dots between Steve Poindexter and the 2000 Black style of jazzy broken beat, while "Channel & Transmission" is a skewed skip through wonky deep house/jazz-funk fusion.

Temarasa (12")
Cat: GAMM 145. Rel: 24 Jun 20
  1. Temarasa (5:36)
  2. Chor Gway (4:43)
Review: When it comes to the jazzier, more Latin-focused side of GAMM's output, much of the best material has always come courtesy of Sugarloaf Gangsters - the re-edit alter ego of carnival house maestros Spiritual South. Here they return to the Swedish imprint for the first time in 14 years with a two-tracker that's every bit as sweaty and celebratory as their previous work. Check for example A-side "Temarasa", a brilliantly tweaked and subtly touched-up revision of a heavily percussive Brazilian workout laden with sizzling samba horns and heavy funk guitars. Equally as potent is flipside "Chor Gway", an epic African style drum track peppered with dub style electronic noises underpinned with a deliciously weighty, sub-heavy bassline.

Cat: FIAR 052. Rel: 06 Jul 20
  1. We Do It (DJ Spinna remix) (3:49)
  2. We Do It (Jazz Spastiks remix) (3:11)
Review: A decade has passed since Slum Village jumped on a KVBeats instrumental and delivered "We Do It", a warm, sweet and bass-heavy number full of the Detroit act's usual on-point rap flows. Here the track is given a 2020 makeover courtesy of hired hands DJ Spinna and Jazz Spastiks. Spinna naturally opts for a distinctively "Golden era" vibe, laying the Motor City crew's raps over a relaxed, head-nodding beat rich in jazzy double bass samples, crunchy snares and woozy electric piano chords. The jazz Spastiks up the tempo on their flipside version, delivering a revision that's closer in tone to Slum Village's original while offering all manner of subtle differences and dancefloor-focused touches.

The Piccolo: Tender Plays Tubby (limited 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: JDETR 99110. Rel: 01 Jun 20
  1. Down In The Village (4:33)
  2. Trenton Place (5:36)
  3. Raga (4:47)
  4. In The Night (5:05)
Review: For reasons not fully explained in the accompanying press release, 22a regular Tenderlonious is now the proud owner of the half-size "piccolo" flute once owned by legendary British jazz man Tubby Hayes. That piccolo is naturally the dominant feature of "The Piccolo: Tender Plays Tubby", a fine EP of Hayes covers from the Ruby Rushton founder. "Down In the Village" is a high-octane big-band jazz style affair that includes some superb drumming and piano solos aplenty, while "Trenton Place" is a wonderfully emotive slab of downtempo jazz bliss. Tenderlonious's piccolo playing takes pride of place on the tango-tinged flipside opener "Raga", but is even more prominent on the superb EP closer "In The Night", a classic-sounding affair that's probably the pick of a very strong bunch.

Review: DJ crew Jazz 'N' Palms are probably best known for their association with Ronnie Scott's in London, where they can regularly be heard warming up for bands. Their new vinyl venture explores the more Balearic side of their musical personality, with EP one featuring re-edits of tracks often played poolside at Pikes Hotel in Ibiza. That means a mixture of languid, Pat Metheny-ish Mediterranean jazz-fusion ("Coastal Highway"), Latin-fired jazz-funk ("Going East"), sumptuous Rhodes-laden soundscapes ("Chica"), humid Afro-Cuban jazz ("1492"), afternoon-fresh Flamenco-jazz fusion ("St Martin"), and the kind of relaxed, louche fare that Bob James would probably enjoy ("Strings of Spring").

  1. Jorun Bombay & The Espressolites - "Peas In An Alternate Universe" (4:22)
  2. Jorun Bombay - "Mister Magic" (A Jorun Bombay edit - alternate version) (3:19)
Review: When it comes to delivering party-starting funk and soul 45s, Jorun Bombay has an impressive track record. His latest seven-inch is rather fine, too. On the A-side he joins forces with a trio of musicians to offer up "Peas In An Alternate Universe": a riff on JBs classic "Pass The Peas" that layers extended organ and trombone solos over a groove dominated by crunchy breakbeats and virtuoso bass guitar. Flipside "Mister Magic" is a deeper, warmer and more laidback affair, with tidy electric piano parts, toe-tapping drums, occasional string-laden disco samples and warm bass being joined by a simply wonderful new vibraphone solo.

  1. Lothar (5:16)
  2. Bad Bad Puma (4:15)
Review: The people behind the Made To Dance re-edit series keep their cards close to their chest, offering up little information about their identities or aims other than some admirable words about drawing on "different musical traditions going beyond classifications". It would be nice to know a little more, because their occasional releases - and this tidy "45" in particular - are really rather good. A-side "Lothar" sees the mystery scalpel fiends make merry with a Latin jazz number, to which they've added squelchy acid lines and a little more dancefloor weight. Arguably even better is percussive and funky flipside "Bad Bad Puma", a tooled-up disco-jazz number that cleverly blends glistening guitar solos, wild Hammond organs, loose-limbed drum-breaks and locked-in, house-style kick-drum patterns.

  1. K15 - "Elemental" (7:53)
  2. Culross Close - "Intrinsic Value" (4:30)
Review: K15 has been a man on a mission since he first emerged. The London based musician and beat maker has a truly cosmic sound that leans heavily on jazz for inspiration. He's worked on vital labels like Wild Oates and Eglo and now pops up on Mother Tongue to care of one side of this hot 12". His "elemental" is a far sighted track with cosmic keys and spiritual pads layered up over tumbling broken beats. On the flip, his other alias Culross Close appears with "Intrinsic Value" which is a lush track at the intersection of house, jazz, broken beat and jazz-funk. It is stuffed with the sort of very real feelings that define all his work.

Review: A-grade diggers, label, shop and reissuers Mr Bongo are back with another of their essential offerings, this time in the form of a 7" taken from Swedish artist Sven Wunder's debut album Do?u cicekleri on new label Piano Piano. The resulting record is a seamless fusion of bright colours and bleeding pigments, real instruments and synthetic sound that is as worldly as they come. "Magnolia" here is the intoxicating a-side with its freewheeling drums and big lead lines, while "Lotus" takes us into a more oriental sound, with gypsy funk and dark-soul stylings making it delightfully hard to pin down.

Review: Given the struggles the World has faced this year, the escapist hedonism of the Sol Power Allstars - a jubilant, floor-friendly fusion of African, Caribbean, South and North American influences - feels like a much-needed shot in the arm. They're at their celebratory best on Sol Power Sound's tenth release. Vocalist Massama Dogo and guitarist Frank Martins lead the line on impressive opener "Va Se Da", a contemporary slab of Afro-house goodness. The accompanying dub, a tougher, sweatier and more bass-laden proposition, makes the most of the previously buried horns courtesy of LA band Jungle Fire. On the flip, Jose Marquez provides a suitably spacey, percussion-rich, Afro-synth style rework of classic Sol Power cut "Djidjo Vide", while "Lift It Up" is a sleazy slab of trippy Afro-acid with added hazy horns.

Review: Thomas Xu tends not to release much music, but when he does it tends to be musically rich, rhythmically complex and very, very good. That's certainly the case with "Places In Time", his second EP on Steady Flight following an inspired 2017 debut on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature imprint. There's much to set the pulse racing across the EP, from the heavily analogue, synthesizer-powered, intergalactic jazz-funk looseness of "Easin", and the slipped 21st century instrumental space-jazz of "Tired A Being Tired (What Are We Here For)", to the densely layered, piano-driven ambience of "Promise 2", and the hard-to-pigeonhole eccentricity of closing cut "Let's Go See Roy".

Review: It's early days for Meftah, who you may have spotted remixing Amp Fiddler on Mahogani Music alongside Jahn Cloud, but this low key 12" highlights him as a serious talent to keep tabs on in the Detroit music community. There's no hiding his musical roots and influences, as dusty keys, live bass and loose, expressive percussion intertwine in a mellow, bluesy haze. This is cut from the same cloth as Kenny Dixon Jr, Theo Parrish, Jay Daniel and scores of others, but Meftah has his own mellow mood to impart on these five addictive, seductive trips through deepest jazz-inflected house.

Review: This release marks something of a departure for Athens of the North, a label predominantly known for reissuing ludicrously rare funk and soul sevens. For starters, it's a brand new album, written, performed and produced by jazzman Greg Foat and Warren Hampshire, who's best known for being a member of The Bees. Then there's what it sounds like. While there are nods to the organic, immaculately produced soul of Rotary Connection, for the most part Galaxies Like Grains of Sand is a luscious fusion of hazy, Cinematic Orchestra style jazz, folksy downtempo compositions, and the blissful, head-in-the-clouds bliss of new age influenced ambient. Surprising or not, it's an utterly beguiling album

Review: After spending so much of their career to date releasing on Jazzman, it's interesting to see The Greg Foat Group make their way over to Athens Of The North for this cool and deadly new record. "The Dreaming Jewels" keeps the grooves simmering low down - all the sweeter to sink into. Just lock in on "Eric's Breakdown" and ask yourself if the track needs any more than that sweet conga flex. "The Door Into Summer" is a beautifully mellow jam too, all sultry Rhodes and sax to signal the start of lazy days. There are more tender moments and some breezier affairs, but the vibe remains chilled throughout this wonderful set from an accomplished band.

Review: The latest album from Bristol's increasingly eclectic Banoffee Pies label is an intriguing proposition. It comes from long-time Leif collaborator and Freerotation member Tom Ellis, who has joined forces with deep house producer Mark Hand, saxophonist Michel Renger, and experienced live performer Dave Elson to form a new jazz-focused band, Soulstate Jazz. With the help of numerous other artists connected to the Freerotation-related Malt Barn studio, Ellis and chums have created a set of musically rich, life-affirming tracks that fuse live jazz drums and instrumentation with elements of jazz-funk, deep house, ambient and downtempo grooves. It's kind of a house-head's take on the contemporary jazz sound of Ishmael Ensemble, and that's a very good thing indeed.

Review: Just how much can be done with a mere three musicians at play? In the case of GoGo Penguin, here on their fifth album and with one Mercury Music Prize nomination under their belt, the answer seems to be 'as much as those three musicians want'. This new collection of jazz-electronic-classical work again showcases how commanding and innovative the trio can be. Combining Chris Illingworth's keys, Rob Turner's percussion and the mournful double bass of Nick Blacka, this self-titled outing is a genuinely epic journey that makes transitioning between styles seem easy, seamlessly nodding to post-rock, ambient, movie score and more. Technically phenomenal, conceptually innovative and destined to transport listeners with each and every note, if you've not explored these guys before now's the time to get involved.

Review: Since joining Blue Note in 2016 on the back of a rising reputation as one of contemporary British jazz's most exciting outfits, GoGo Penguin have delivered a pair of genuinely must-have albums. Two years have passed since the last, so this self-titled full-length is undoubtedly long overdue. As with its predecessors, it's a wonderfully vibrant and thrill-a-minute affair, with the trio delivering unfurling epics full of twinkling, action-packed piano solos, infectious rhythms and fluid, ambidextrous acoustic bass. The influence of 21st century dance music culture is obvious throughout, despite the Manchester threesome never straying from the confines of the traditional jazz trio (drums, bass, piano). In fact, it's this uniquely modern fusion sound that makes GoGo Penguin such a big deal. Don't sleep!

Review: Italian duo Nu Guinea has previously proved adept at creating humid, sultry deep house and tropical-infused electronics. Here, they focus a little more on the latter with a concept album based around the distinctive Afrobeat rhythms of legendary drummer Tony Allen. With his blessing, and that of the Comet label on which he's been releasing since the 1980s, the Early Sounds Recordings pair has cut-up and re-constructed Allen's drums, combining them with their own steamy electronics, vintage synthesizer lines and classic drum machines. It's an intoxicating and hugely entertaining blend that sits somewhere between their previous outings, Danny Wolfers' material under the Nacho Patrol guise, and the dreamy late '80s/early '90s work of forgotten Italian producer Mr Marvin.

Review: When this album was initially released way back in 2008, it was Kaidi Tatham's first under his given name (previously, he'd released solo records as Afronaught and appeared on all manner of collaborative releases). Since then, he has of course gone on to greater critical and commercial success, but as this timely reissue proves, "In Search of Home" still hits home hard. Like much of his work, it deftly showcases his Herbie Hancock-like jazz and jazz-funk keyboard skills within tracks that variously join the dots between broken beat, hip-hop, deep house, Latin fusion and sumptuous slow jams. Colourful, rich, jazzy and impeccably performed throughout, the album remains one of the high points of Tatham's career and is well worth adding to your collection.

Review: As part of his Gondwana label's 10th anniversary, masterful Manchester trumpeter and contemporary jazz trendsetter Matthew Halsall has put together a special deluxe edition of his beautiful "Colour Yes" album with thick reverse board sleeves, silver block letter foiling and two printed inner sleeves. First released in 2009, the album showcases Halsall's deeply emotive style across the 8 achingly good, supremely spiritual tracks that glow with gorgeous piano playing, gently lilting drums and his own fantastic leads.

Review: Those who've heard Astral Travel's previous releases - and there sadly haven't been all that many - will attest that their take on spiritual jazz is far from "standard". While it has freewheeling, improvised jazz at its core, it is so much more than that, as this fabulous new album proves. Alongside standard jazz instrumentation (think drums, double bass, piano, flute, saxophone and so on), the former Jazz:refreshed outfit also makes extensive use of glitchy electronics and skewed samples. The results are undeniably cosmic and otherworldly, with frequent glimpses of the kind of aural chaos more associated with free-jazz and experimental electronica.

Review: The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping them for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe. Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on their sound, the band enlisted two giants of underground hip-hop to bless mics on the album as well. After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection.

Review: Lascelle 'Lascelles' Gordon is the creative powerhouse behind Vibration Black Finger, and once again here he excels on a second album that furthers his magnificent jazz sound. Obscure spiritual sounds of the 70s are the melting pot from which he mostly draws, with plenty of like-minded collaborates all contributing their own skills to the mix. Collective empowerment and personal development all enrich the album and its progressive message, and it was all put together from old ideas on tapes and DATs that he had worked on over the years. Instrumental segues stitch together the thoughtful vocal pieces and moments of real gusto help it stick long in the memory.

Review: Former Brand New Heavies founder member Lascelles Gordon has delivered some of his most inspiring work since launching the jazz-focused Vibration Black Finger project in 2016. Each release to date has been superb, with the producer/percussionist being joined by a rotating cast of top-quality musicians, vocalists and collaborators. Sophomore set "Can You See What I'm Trying To Say" is, in our humble opinion, his strongest release to date: an inspired, imaginative collection of compositions rooted in obscure 1970s spiritual jazz but also informed by dub, post-punk, free-jazz, 23 Skidoo and smoky trip-hop. Throw in a swathe of field recordings used to add texture and atmosphere, and you have a stunning album that should be on everyone's shopping list.

Review: The music of Melbourne quartet Hiatus Kaiyote has always been fiendishly tricky to pin down, with 2015 album "Choose Your Weapon" - here reissued on shocking pink vinyl - being the most shapeshifting of the lot. While rooted in lo-fi soul, the album's inventive, colourful and eccentric tracks often also touch on everything from future R&B, jazz, ambient and samba, to alternative rock, eight-bit computer game soundtracks, broken beat, slipped reggae and the similarly mixed-up fuzziness of Hot Chip. The fact that it all makes perfect sonic sense - or at least bristles with genuine musical thrills - is testament to the band's production, performances and genuinely off-the-wall ideas.

Review: Leifur James' 2018 debut album, "A Louder Silence", was that most rare of musical gems: a hugely entertaining album of eclectic, off-kilter experiments rooted in both jazz and atmospheric electronica. "Angel In Disguise", his long-promised follow-up, takes a similar approach, layering his own intricate piano playing and occasional vocals over skittish, off-kilter beats, droning electronics, ghostly ambient tones, Nathan Fake style fuzz-fuelled melodies and occasional up-tempo, almost club-ready beats. The obvious comparison is James Blake circa his 2011 debut album, but that doesn't really do justice to the boldness and inventiveness of James' compositions. The best advice we can give is to listen to the clips: we'd be surprised if you were disappointed.
