  2. Moe Fabrik - "Sassy Boi" (4:39)
  3. Sam Irl - "Changes" (6:14)
  4. Steve Spacek - "Do U Want My Lov" (3:30)
  5. Feater - "Cosmic Dust" (6:19)
  6. Abase - "Fallen Statues" (5:56)
Review: Munich's Jazz & Milk label has now been releasing music for 15 years. As a result, founder Dusty is in a celebratory mood and has decided to offer-up this compilation style EP of previously unreleased treats from label artists old and new. Fusing organic and electronic instrumentation while fusing a myriad of interconnected styles, the EP's six tracks offer an excellent snapshot of the label's distinctive sound. Our picks include the sun-kissed Afro-South American fusion of Bongani Give Thanks' 'Indoda (African Reprise)', the bruk-up soul of Moe Fabrik's brilliant 'Sassy Boy', the intergalactic future soul shuffle of Steve Spacek's superb 'Do You Want My Love' and the sub-heavy Latin house percussion-fest that is Abase's excellent closing cut, 'Fallen Statues'.

  1. Trust Is Key (5:40)
  2. Observe (4:50)
  3. Midnight In Peckham (7:02)
  4. Luxury Motivation (5:51)
Review: Chaos In The CBD have quietly been building an impressive reputation for some time, with releases on Hot Haus, Amadeus and Needwant all hitting the spot. Here they transfer to Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International with what's arguably their most mature and musically expansive EP to date. There's a decidedly dusty, eyes-closed deep house feel throughout, with hypnotic grooves laden with all manner of neat, often jazz inspired touches. This is perhaps most obvious on the St Germain style jazz-house goodness of "Observe" - all skipping cymbals, bouncy grooves and killer pianos - but can also be found on the deeper "Observe". It's there, too, on the lilting brilliance of "Midnight In Peckham" - think yearning trumpets and twinkling piano motifs - and the blissful "Luxury Motivation".

The Unofficial Edits & Overdubs Special Extended Versions Part Four Of Six

  2. Pheeroan Aklaff - "L" (6:04)
  3. The Kay-gees - "Tango In Space" (6:46)
  4. Hutson - "Unforgettable" (part 1) (6:49)
Review: Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs Special Extended Versions series rolls on with a fourth of six parts. It's proven a real gold mine so far, with endless amounts of gospel tinged house and super spiritual grooves getting all who hear it to a high state of consciousness. There are plenty of jazzy overtones to the opener here, 'Come Sunday', which is laden with afro percussion and big horns. It's a steel drum affair on Pheeroan Aklaff 's 'L' that is brilliantly tropical, then there's trident funk from The Kay-gees and a lush bit of fusion from the ever excellent Leroy Hutson.

Cat: MT 7002. Rel: 24 Nov 20
  1. Masina (2:23)
  2. Mizugaki (3:49)
Review: This limited-edition, transparent seven-inch single serves as a showcase for Mark de Clive-Lowe's superb new album, Dreamweavers, a set he recorded with the assistance of bassist Andrea Lombardini and drummer Tommaso Cappellato. A-side 'Masina' is as special as you'd expect, with the New Zealand-born artist adding sparkling synthesizers, breezy Latin pianos and warming Rhodes chords and motifs to a life-affirming jazz-funk groove. Flipside 'Mugzai' is a deeper, slower and more sanguine affair, though thanks to a wealth of fluid piano solos it retains the infectious breeziness that's such a feature of the impeccable A-side.

Marilyn (12" Nachpressung)
Cat: EGLO 013. Rel: 25 Nov 20
  1. Marylin (7:30)
  2. Farukx (6:34)
Review: Eglo continues to offer up choice reissues of killer cuts from the back catalogue of Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. The latest to get the treatment is 2011 12" Marilyn, which appeared at a time when Shepherd was just beginning to expand his sound palette following a few years of distinctively-swung deep house singles. The title track still boasts the distinctive, jammed-out synthesizer lead lines that were then a hallmark of his productions, as well as the shuffling house beats that we all love dearly, but also makes use of lots of extra percussion, Motor City-influenced chords and some sweet scat singing. Flipside 'Farukx' is a little more revolutionary, with the Eglo co-founder wrapping jazz-fired broken beats in drowsy chords, twinkling synth sounds and wavy female vocal snippets. Likethe A-side, it's one of Shepherd's best.

Review: Gee Bag and Jazz T have hooked up for this one courtesy of T's own Boot Records. he's the beat maker who serve sup smooth, sweet breaks while Gee Bag (a three times EOW Champion) compliments that with some lucid storytelling. Warm pianos, beautiful live maracas and jazzy bass complete the picture. The video for this is also worth finding - it offers a look into the world of young lovers in their pursuit of happiness, but from an underground street level perspective. The full instrumental on the flip will also find favour with hip hop heads.

Review: Jarren hails from LA and brings plenty of the warmth and soul of that place to his music on this, the third rase from the already fine sounding Slices of A Dog. Mixing up deep house grooves, sultry sax from Jacob "JD" Crouch, oodles of g-funk and plenty of lush broken beats, this is a record that will bring heat to even the coldest winter night. Low-riding drums, cold analogue pops and hits and meandering top lines all take your mind away while the squelchy bass keeps your ass on the move. LA legend Bendek is the man bringing that on guitar, and label's co-founder Brothermartino on flutes also plays a key part.

Review: DJ crew Jazz 'N' Palms are probably best known for their association with Ronnie Scott's in London, where they can regularly be heard warming up for bands. Their new vinyl venture explores the more Balearic side of their musical personality, with EP one featuring re-edits of tracks often played poolside at Pikes Hotel in Ibiza. That means a mixture of languid, Pat Metheny-ish Mediterranean jazz-fusion ("Coastal Highway"), Latin-fired jazz-funk ("Going East"), sumptuous Rhodes-laden soundscapes ("Chica"), humid Afro-Cuban jazz ("1492"), afternoon-fresh Flamenco-jazz fusion ("St Martin"), and the kind of relaxed, louche fare that Bob James would probably enjoy ("Strings of Spring").

Review: Jazztronik is the free-form music project headed up by Japanese artist Ryota Nozaki. He has put out no fewer than 24 albums since his first in 1999, and in 2005 he put out Samurai. The lead single from that record now gets its own pressing treatment on hi son label and comes with two alternate versions. The original is a shiny, glossy and uplifting nu jazz tune with big broken beats and even big piano solos layered over the top. Some vocal ad libs add a contemporary edge and ensure the whole thing takes off. A more striped back Beats version will be perfect for more serous dancing and the Piano version does what it says on the tin.

That is finally out now and you can also get some of the highlights of it on this fine 7", 'Heart to Heart' is a big and celebratory funk gem with huge trumpet stabs, rolling drums and hip swinging clasp that are pure feel good grooves. Review: California Soul queen Tiombe Lockhart returns to Mother Tongue with a special follow up to her The Aquarius Years album. Both tracks get special remix treatment, first up it is jazz man Christian Scoot who serves up a super pained, late night and spiritual remix where the beats are heavy hearted and the sax beautifully tragic. Intergalactic ace Carlos Nino then works with Nate Mercereau & Jamael Dean on the flip to make the tune into a steamy and sensuous neo-soul lullaby. The vocal harmonies are enough to send shivers down your spine.

Review: Seven years ago, United Future Organisation founder member Toshio Matsuura pitched up on Blue Note with his (then) latest future jazz collective, HEX. The resultant album's highlights included a fine cover of Joe Chambers' song 'Hello to the Wind' featuring lead vocals from Cinematic Orchestra member Grey Reverend. Here the track returns, this time in evocative and occasionally dancefloor-friendly new forms. Matsuura offers two unheard takes on side A: the blissful ambient style 'Starry Version' - all acoustic guitars and mountain stream electronics - and the jazzy, stripped-back 'Z Groove' instrumental. Over on the flip Parisian producer Hugo LX takes over, delivering two superb late-night house takes that sit somewhere between atmospheric deep house and bass-heavy Chicago jack.

Review: Daniel Maunick continues on the theme of his debut album Macumba Quebrada from 2019 with this new EP on Far Out. That LP got high praise from dons like Moodymann, Gilles Peterson and Ron Trent and this new one will too, surely. It is deep, mystic house of the highest order, with dreamy pads layered over loose, spacious drums and with wooden percussion rolling over the top. It's hard to pick a highlight here as all four jams really connect to mind, body and spirit thanks to their authenticity and live feels. The vocal motifs add further layers of depth to unpack and explore.

There's no hiding his musical roots and influences, as dusty keys, live bass and loose, expressive percussion intertwine in a mellow, bluesy haze. Review: Australian multi-instrumentalist four-piece Mildlife is all set to unleash its new album Automatic any time soon. Before that though they keep us happy with a new single that comes backed with some pretty big remixes. Adam Halliwell's flute on 'Vapour' is the standout feature on a lush broken beat tune that also makes great use of a vocoder. The first to add their own spin is Scottish legend and one half of Optimo, JD Twitch. Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy aka Cosmodelica is the second remixer and the Worldwide FM host and assured music aficionado comes correct with two versions, one of which is a nice instrumental.

Entitled Selva Records it kicks off with a new and steamy 7" featuring Denitia. Her vocals are the butter on top of the sweet production, which is late night neo-soul and jazzy. The track has plenty of room for emotions to sink in, and a golden sound that is superbly lush and luxuriant. Says the artist on his latest link with Denitia, "I think Denitia and I both had a new confidence about working together and were excited about the new sounds we were building." Too right.

Review: By any standards, Samii's debut EP is extremely impressive. The previously unheard artist wrote and performed the songs herself, with production assistance and some musical contributions from 2000 Black core crew members Dego, Mr Mensah, Matt Lord and Kaidi Tatham. The result is a string of impressive songs that combine Samii's distinctive take on soul with elements of jazz-funk (see sublime opener 'Wake Me Out'), space funk (the bubbly, synth-laden excellence of 'Spaced Out Summer Tours & Back Again'), broken beat (the bustling, percussive, bass-heavy shuffle of 'For Too Long') and stripped-back, early '80s Brit-funk (weighty dancefloor workout 'Here to Luv Myself').

Review: A decade has passed since Slum Village jumped on a KVBeats instrumental and delivered "We Do It", a warm, sweet and bass-heavy number full of the Detroit act's usual on-point rap flows. Here the track is given a 2020 makeover courtesy of hired hands DJ Spinna and Jazz Spastiks. Spinna naturally opts for a distinctively "Golden era" vibe, laying the Motor City crew's raps over a relaxed, head-nodding beat rich in jazzy double bass samples, crunchy snares and woozy electric piano chords. The jazz Spastiks up the tempo on their flipside version, delivering a revision that's closer in tone to Slum Village's original while offering all manner of subtle differences and dancefloor-focused touches.

Review: In recent times, funk breaks maestro DJ Soopasoul has devoted much of his time to creating and releasing reworks and mash-ups as part of his top-selling Soopastole Edits series. Now he's decided the time is right to unveil some new original music via Jalepeno Records, an imprint he's been associated with since the dawn of time (well, 2008). 'Hot & Cold', featuring the strong and sassy lead vocals of Dionne Charles, is a prize chunk of shuffling sixties soul action built around crunchy drum-breaks, insanely heavy bass, clipped guitars, punchy horn lines and some suitably sustained Hammond organ stabs. He doffs a cap to the B-Boys and B-Girls on flipside 'Hustlin', a break-dance friendly instrumental number that sits somewhere between the Incredible Bongo Band and 21st century soul revivalists the Dap-Kings.

Review: Since some of We Jazz's most impressive seven-inch singles so far have come from drummer Teppo Makynen under his Teddy Rok and Stance Brothers aliases, there's a fair chance that 'On Top' will also be a must-check beast. It is, of course, with Makynen following his successful blueprint by delivering two contrasting versions of the same self-played and self-produced track. The A-side 'Guitar and Flute' version is a smoky, late-night treat, with Makynen providing jazz guitar flourishes and Timo Lassy flowery flute parts atop a head-nodding, hip-hop style groove. The track's atmospheric feel is heightened on the flipside 'Organ & Vibes' version, which reminded us of some of the more blunted and stoned trip-hop cuts that Ninja Tune released in the late 1990s.

Review: Emma-Jean Thackray is often heralded as one of the currently booming jazz scene's most vital artists. Her Walrus EP came back in 2016 and immediately sold out. It was a unique experimental jazz and beat mixture alive with the spirit of South London, filled with off key percussion and plenty of the award-winning artist's own jazz trumpet and flugel playing. Opener 'Baro Bop' is a worldly number, the title track has a heavy, swaggering groove and 'Birthday Cake' is a trip to the clouds. That this is back in print should please plenty of fans old and new.

They're both an established part of the Motor City music community, and their self-titled debut album for Moodymann's Mahogani Music is undeniably rooted in Detroit's ongoing musical story. Effortlessly soulful and musically rich, its' eight killer cuts various touch on Parliament/Funkadelic style P-Funk (the superb title track), up-tempo, slap-bass propelled '80s boogie ('Music is My Hustle'), warming deep house-soul ('Please Don't Fail Me'), beatdown (the sleazy brilliance of the Amp Fiddler-esque 'Formula of Passion'), and inspired fusions of all of the above ('Lifeline').

Two Italians in bass player Andrea Lombardini and drummer Tommaso Cappellato also get in on the action having been constant companions on his live tours for many years. Broken beats, global grooves, the meditative sombreness of Sakamoto and jazzy soulful looseness of Ahmad Jamal all inform this record (which was made on a road trip from Italy to Switzerland) which is as good for dark winter nights as it is warm summer days.

Review: In the two years since the release of the Rye Lane Volume 1 LP, Al Dobson Jr has been busy. This belated, mixtape style follow-up is something of a beast, with 28 cuts, interludes and quick-fire rhythm tracks to enjoy. Like its' predecessor, Rye Lane Volume II & III is similar in ethos to the work of his friend and contemporary Mo Kolours, with tropical rhythms, African drums and low-slung hip-hop beats being combined with dusty vocal samples, rich Rhodes chords, freshly baked electronics, and all manner of tasty global influences. Highlights come thick and fast, from the Middle Eastern shuffle of "Overseas Lebanese", and Afro-jazz drum workout "Malful (Nebetia)", to the eyes-down deep house bliss of "Peru Timing (Part 2)

Review: Horatio Luna is Melbourne composer, bassist and producer Henry Hicks. A key part of the city's vibrant jazz and broken beat scene, he has an inescapably funky ability to play bass and is founder of hip hop /soul collective 30/70, who have released on Rhythm Section here in the UK to great acclaim. This new album is focussed more on the dan floor than previous works but still displays plenty of virtuoso musical skills, with house grooves and jazz energy intertwining perfectly. 'Fuck The System' even adds rap verses, while 'Be Free' channels the spirt of funk legend Prince.

Review: 2020 marks two decades since eight brothers from Chicago's South Side decided to form their own jazz-fired, New Orleans style brass band, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. To mark the milestone, they've decided the time is right to unleash their first studio album in two years. As with many of their previous full-length excursions, Bad Boys of Jazz is an excitable, forthright and fiery affair featuring some stonking, dancefloor-friendly moments that brilliantly blend elements of jazz, soul, funk and more. Highlights are plentiful, from the up-tempo, brass-band-house heaviness of 'After Party' (which doffs a sizable cap to Royal House classic 'Can U Party') and similarly inclined 'In The House', to the deep and melancholic 'Mary' and the low-slung brilliance of 'What It Is'.

Review: Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Pete Josef has always made music that prioritises soul and feeling over sticking to arbitrary genre templates. It's what made his 2015 debut album Colours such a refreshing listen. It is also evident throughout long-awaited follow-up I Rise With The Birds, a gorgeously tactile, positive and life-affirming set that sees Josef add his immaculate blue-eyed soul vocals to songs that variously mix, match and mangle elements of jazz, broken beat, tropicala, Latin soul, jazz-funk, downtempo grooves and easy listening. Rich in atmospheric string arrangements, hazy horns, and breezy instrumentation, it's the kind of set that doesn't need to try too hard to entertain. In other words, it's a brilliant follow-up to Colours that could well find an audience well beyond his existing underground fan base.

Review: Light of the World's seminal Jazz Funk Power album has bene long in the works and is much anticipated from the Brit-funk pioneers. Their sound is stuffed with soul and conviction, and references all the classics (think the likes of Earth Wind and Fire, Incognito, Jamiroquai, Tower of Power, Brand New Heavies, Kool and The Gang and Chic ) as well as bringing something new. Musically and lyrically this is a semi-biographical work that muses on summer loves and optimistic grooves, slow motion love songs and plenty of tender gems. Sentimental and emotional but never overly so, this one was well worth the wait.

Review: Given their shared musical heritage - both are members of the extended Firecracker Recordings crew - it's perhaps something of a surprise to find that Face The Facts marks the first serious collaboration between Linkwood and Gav 'Fudge Fingaz' Sutherland AKA Other Lands. It's less surprising that the album is really, really good. Touching on warming synth-boogie, head-nodding downtempo jams, mutant beatdown, Balearic beats, sunset-ready soundscapes and warming analogue deep house, the 13-track set is notable for the pair's extensive use of dusty old drum machines, tactile instrumentation (think smooth Rhodes solos, languid guitar solos and blissed-out synths) and Sutherland's hazy, sometimes seductive singing voice.

Review: Since they made their debut in 2012, Potatohead People's music has been championed by some serious players in the instrumental hip-hop and downtempo grooves community, most notably Nightmares on Wax, Phife Dawg and Big Boi. Listening to Mellow Fantasy, their third full-length and first in two years, it's easy to see why. From start to finish, the album lives up to the promise of its' title, with the Vancouver-based duo delivering rich and warming cuts that make extensive use of some seriously seductive and jazzy instrumentation. While rooted in hip-hop (there are a number of rap cuts scattered across the set), the album's genius lies in the Canadian twosome's ability to also turn their hand to jazz-funk, broken beat, P-funk flavoured soul, seductive slow jams and decidedly Balearic, synth-heavy soundscapes.

Review: Not to be confused with the 2007 remix album Percussion Madness Revisited, this excellent double-pack offers features some of the best bits of Latin percussionist Luisito Quintero's Louie Vega-produced Percussion Madness album. If you missed that set 14 years ago, it's well worth picking up. Heavily percussive and rich in South American rhythms from start to finish, the set sees Quintero, Vega and collaborators flitting between slick soulful house (see the Josh Milan-voiced 'Love Remains the Same'), heavy salsa ('Tumbao'), boogaloo ('Skinny Papa'), tech-tinged Afro-house (Francis Mbappe collaboration 'Gbagada, Gbagada, Gbogogo, Gbogodo'), bossanova ('Our Love', with Anane) and epic, jazz-flecked Latin house (12-minute closing cut 'Free My Soul').

Review: Aussie Afrobeat and Afro-soul crew Shaolin Afronauts have released some terrific music over the years. While they've released more polished and complex music in recent years, we're still massive fans of their 2011 debut album Flight of the Ancients, which returns to wax in 2020 via a fresh pressing from Freestyle Records. It's a superb set all told, with the Adelaide-based combo strutting their way through both up-tempo and more laid-back fusions of Afro-beat and Afro-funk, each piled high with evocative horn lines, wah-wah guitar motifs, Tony Allen inspired drumming and seriously good solos from the band's talented players. Our current favourites include 'Flight of the Ancients', the irrepressible 'Kilimanjaro' and the spiritual jazz inspired closing cut, 'The Scarab'.

Review: Delicious Detonation is the second album from Soul Grenades, who have established themselves as one of the contemporary scene's most innovative bands. Their live shows are electrifying affairs that are steeped in history but come with plenty of futuristic vim and vigour. Their hard hitting funk, big brass sounds and ever growing collection of fresh songs continues apace on this record, which includes big hitters like 'Supercharged', slow motion groovers like 'Wannabe', deep cut and romantic pearler 'Fortunate' and more smoochy numbers such as 'Loved Again, By You.' This then is another bold statement.

Review: Dutch digger, DJ and beat-maker Naom Offir first tickled our fancy when he was recording as Love's High on Star Creature back in 2018. Since then, he's released a couple of decent - if fairly low-key - seven-inch singles as Soul Supreme, fusing his retro-futurist boogie and synth-funk sounds with dusty, homemade hip-hop beats, deeper instrumentation and nods towards jazz-funk. It's that blueprint that he works from on this self-titled debut album, throwing in additional tracks inspired by slow house, G-funk and wonky instrumental hip-hop to keep things varied. The result is an impressively vibrant, listenable and far-sighted album that looks set to be one of the breakthrough records of 2020.

Review: In recent years drummer and percussionist Richard Spaven has hit the heights thanks to acclaimed albums on Soul Has No Tempo and, most recently, Real World Studios. His breakthrough release came much earlier though - a 2010 contribution to Jazz Re:freshed's now celebrated "5ive" series of mini-albums. Here that set gets a release on vinyl for the very first time to celebrate its tenth birthday. It remains a hugely entertaining affair, with Spaven and his collection of collaborative players (including vocalist Jose James) offering up tracks that brilliantly blur the boundaries between nu-jazz, jazz-funk, hip-hop and dusty downtempo beats. It was arguably a little overlooked first-time round, but as this edition proves, much of the music is pleasingly timeless (meaning it still sounds delightfully fresh).

This is his 10th full length and is a collection of the EPs he has put out over the last year. The music is playful, big swinging and designed to get crowds spinning. Review: Tarquim is a musical project that is devoted to making new songs drawn from the study of different folk and folk musical traditions. The album is lead skilfully by saxophonist, flutist, composer and producer Pau Vidal with plenty of Afro and Cuban references. The album was written over nine months in Havana and captures the lively hustle and bustle of the Cuba's capital's streets, with big flute sounds, tumbling and prickly drums and bottom-wiggling grooves to make you move. It's an ageless album that could be a forgotten classics as much as a brand new bit of world music treasure.

Review: Jimi Tenor's fruitful career bares another fine crop here with Aulos, his second album on Philophon, marking another landmark moment. From a maker of dark industrial to the creator of these spring time, organic and nature inspired sounds he has made quite the transition. The multi-instrumentalist and singer is joined by drummers Ekow Alabi Savage from Ghana and Max Weissenfeldt from Germany to aadd extra rhythmic edge to tracks which range from utterly blissed out instrumentals to more strident and kosmische grooves. The sweetness of 'Afroeuropean' is a real highlight, while '128 Cosmic Rock' is thrilling moment of danceable intensity.
