Review: A collaborative new single by sampletronic master Kieran Hebden (aka. Four Tet) and guitarist and composer William Tyler, two acclaimed musicians and both longstanding friends. Part of a recent spewing-forth of Hebden-adjacent material to hit the shelves after the artist's oft-reported-upon "agent of chaos" phase, these two tracks, pressed to a furtive 12", provide a neat counterpoint to that assessment. Rather than a pair of riddim bangers, the record flaunts Hebden's signature electronic textures and Tyler's guitar into a hypnotic, nominally dark soundwhirl, reminiscent of the earliest days of Text, but with a unique edge - a sonic corner never quite scoured before by either artist.

Review: Holding up a mirror to modern overflows of living capital, which impugn our many British 'urbs, Gordon Chapman-Fox (aka. Warrington Runcorn New Town Development Plan) presents 'Overspill Estates', the follow-up release to 2024's full-length LP Your Community Hub. As with all other basic life necessities, new-build estates - repackaged as commodities - require excessive production for developers to maintain illusions of value. The irony at the heart of Chapman-Fox's project, however, is that the ideology driving the edification of the UK's post-war planned communities was the overspill of people, not space. Unlike the overflow of unlivable space characterising big cities like London and Manchester, "overspill" in places like Basildon, Cwmbran, Redditch and Letchworth referred to densely compacted, deprived populations from other areas. As objects become subjects and vice versa, full-length records from cheekily sobriqueted electronic music producers likewise need glimpses of the cutting room floor, and this retrofit rollick through four further mind-benders proves how (satisfyingly) long things can take to gestate.

Review: Wisp's debut EP, Pandora, shows off her understanding of modern shoegaze. This release has garnered significant attention and when you heat it, it'll be clear why. The standout single, 'Your Face,' opens with crashing drums and ethereal guitar leads, perfectly complemented by Wisp's dreamy, drowsy vocal effect. The track's structure and key changes between verses create a stunning listening experience. Pandora and the reflective atmosphere are breathtaking with Wisp's gentle soprano and shinning shoegaze guitar. Although the lyrics may meander, the overall sonic impact is undeniable. 'Luna,' a highlight of the EP, blends dreamy and reverb-drenched vocals with influences from Slowdive and Candy Claws. The balance between instrumental focus and vocal presence is exceptional. 'See You Soon' stands out lyrically, with poignant lines and an overdriven indie lead. The closing track, 'Mimi,' impresses with its clean vocals and unique writing with the best lyrical content on the project. In Pandora, Wisp delivers a collection of tracks that effortlessly blend wistful melodies with her breathy voice, creating a dreamy shoegaze experience. As debuts go, this is pretty spectacular.

Known for her shadowy blend of Gothic industrial, doom, and folk, Wolfe delves deeper into electronic soundscapes with this release, while maintaining her trademark dark, atmospheric style. The album explores themes of severing toxic ties and the cyclical nature of grief and healing. With ten tracks that seamlessly blend industrial textures, eerie vocals and ambient layers, it's an immersive journey from start to finish. Tracks include the opener 'Whispers in the Echo Chamber', where Wolfe's hushed vocals and industrial beats create a brooding atmosphere, and 'Everything Turns Blue', a track full of lyrical power and electronic drive. Review: Dirt Bike Vacation from Worried Songs Records takes us into the world of Charles 'Poppy Bob' Walker, an amateur guitarist whose mid-80s recordings capture the humdrum of life in Yuma, Arizona. Recorded on a single-track Marantz, the tracks showcase Walker's experimental leanings, with tape delay on 'Granite Bluffs' and 'Goodbye YMCA', and rough overdubs on 'Continuation to Moon Doctor'. Discovered by musician-archivist Cameron Knowler in a dusty Yuma library, these tapes reveal the quiet moments of Walker's daily lifeidriving to work, unwinding at home, or walking the streets. Knowler, who met Walker years earlier without realising it, carefully arranged the tracks to reflect a day in Yuma, blending the mundane with an otherworldly touch. This release is a rare glimpse into both Walker's world and Knowler's own connection to the music.

Review: This collaboration between the sepulchral Sinatra and the kings of ceremonial metallic drone-worship, whilst it is transparently not a work for the faint of heart, is nonetheless worth all the excitement its announcement created in avant-garde circles, and more besides, It's more audibly a work from Walker's than Sunn O)))'s, yet with their assistance the rich melodrama and unflinching abstraction has rarely sounded more startling, or alarmingly approachable. What's more, the counterpoint provided by Sunn O))) to his stentorian baritone elevates proceedings to new heights of otherworldly intensity, resulting in no less than a game-changing triumph, and a clear album of the year contender from this odd couple.
