Listen To The Basic Moves
Listen To The Basic Moves (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: BMX 01. Rel: 16 Jun 20
  1. DJ Booth - "Defaulted (Industry)" (4:43)
  2. DJ Booth - "The Door" (5:22)
  3. Walrus - "Can't Get New Shoes" (6:45)
  4. Walrus - "Free City Light" (5:26)
Review: A sticker on the front of this 12" from Brussels-based Basic Moves proudly proclaims that 100 per cent of sales royalties will be donated to charity. It's a nice move and one that should guarantee that the record is taken even more seriously. Like much of the label's output, it boasts self-styled "outsider club music", this time from Casablanca-born DJ Booth and label co-founder Walrus. DJ Booth handles side A, first romping his way through a bleeping, intoxicating, peak-time techno club jam ("Defaulted (Industry)"), before reaching for the breakbeats, deep electronics and electro shuffle on the superb "The Door". On side B Walrus takes over. "Can't Get New Shoes" is a bubbly, acid-fired chunk of electro/techno crunchiness, while "Free City Light" is notably deeper jazzier and way more melodic.

Androidika
Androidika (coloured vinyl 12")
Cat: DA 009. Rel: 29 Aug 17
  1. DJ Dijital - "Androidika" (4:25)
  2. DJ Dijital - "Detroit Conspiracy Beats" (11:07)
  3. Will Web - "Humanity Nill" (8:51)
Review: DJ Di'jital's Digital Axcess imprint is as singular as it is single-minded. The US producer has been pushing hard, mind-bending electro since 2012, and he's clearly not going to be stopping that anytime soon. This new three-tracker is a nifty slice of metallic dance slaughter for fans of the classic Detroit sound, kicking off with the aggressive kick-snare patters of "Androidika", a tune that slices its way across the room with malevolence and which falls neatly into the equally pumped-up bass stabs of the weightier "Detroit Conspiracy Beats". Will Webb makes an appearance on the flip, coming through with a more broken beat loop that has something veritably UK at its core - pure industrial evil.

Transhumanism 3
Transhumanism 3 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: BA 096. Rel: 13 Sep 19
  1. Slaves Of Sinus - "Chaos (& Me)" (5:08)
  2. RXmode - "Desperate" (6:30)
  3. W1b0 - "Evans Gambit" (5:38)
  4. TFHats - "For What It's Worth" (5:48)
Review: Transhumanism is a collective of Dutch producers who first met on the dance-floor at Dave Clarke's Whip It party at Melkweg in Amsterdam, so that will give you a reliable indicator of their sound: it's brash, serrated electro that fires your synapses and awakens your every sense. Juan Atkins and Helena Hauff have been dropping it all summer and it's easy to see why. There is strobe lit action from Slaves Of Sinus, walls of high intensity sound from RXmode, rave tinged stuff from W1b0 and a more throwback jam from TFHats to round out a high impact EP.

Cat: DATO 07. Rel: 18 May 20
  1. Hammer Down Protocol (6:27)
  2. Fear Tactics (4:35)
  3. Same Size Soul (8:24)
  4. ACRONYM (6:32)
Review: A few years back Dutch producer Wibo Lammerts made some early strikes with digi-only releases on Bass Agenda. Now the electro sword-swinger is back with an EP on Alienata's label Discos Atonicos, following recent appearances from Random XS, Ultrastation and Dez Williams amongst others. The vibe across Heretofore EP is tense, combative machine music with a peak time bent and plenty of future-shock dystopia radiated into its atmosphere. "Fear Tactics" is an especially potent track, but for a uniquely creepy mood try "ACRONYM" too. Darkside electro lovers take heed, this one has everything you need.

  4. You C'n’t Stand On Broken Shoes (3:05)
  5. Choice Curve (2:53)
  6. The Peeper (2:56)
Review: Throughout his career, L.I.E.S. regular Beau Wanzer has proved adept at delivering decidedly fuzzy, lo-fi workouts that variously draw influence from industrial, EBM, techno and electro. He's at it again on "Do The Spider Shimmy", a tidy ten-inch containing six wonderfully wayward cuts. It's a noticeably stripped-back affair, with most of the cuts existing of little more than sparse but heavy basslines, occasional electronics, minimalist electro beats and the odd droning, stylized vocal. Highlights come thick and fast, from the gently spacey synth-scape "Never Look Back" and the buzzing simplicity of "You Can't Stand On Broken Shoes", to the lo-fi no wave pop of "Choice Curve" and the raw, laid back electro sleaze of the title track.

  6. Track 6 (3:37)
Review: Typically, General Elektro isn't giving much away about the identity of the producers behind "new collaboration" Westend, or their aims for the project for that matter. Musically, it's a quietly impressive debut that features a sextet of tracks mostly built around gently undulating synthesizer arpeggio lines and moody electronics. Many of the tracks are stripped-back, hypnotic and beat-less, deriving their power from the relentless thrust of the arpeggio lines that ripple across the sound space. Others, meanwhile, include ghostly electro drums or, in the case of the bombastic "Track 4", the kind of no-nonsense, kick-drum-driven beats that were once a feature of the greatest Electronic Body Music releases.

  1. Always Something Else (5:32)
  2. Roland Acid Again (4:58)
  3. PeanutButter Halloween (Salt mix) (5:16)
  4. Nov27 (6:27)
Review: Sometime I Love Acid, Furthur Electronix and Super Rhythm Trax artist Jared Wilson pops up on Undersound Recordings with an EP that's as ear pleasing as it is dancefloor friendly. Check first the picturesque melodies, dreamy chords, stargazing electronics and subtle acid flashes of four-to-the-floor jam "Always Something Else", before turning your attention to the intergalactic acid electro brilliance of EP standout "Roland Acid Again". The producer's renowned love of mind-altering TB-303 motifs once again comes to the floor on clanking but melodic flipside opener "PeanutButter Halloween (Salt Mix)", while closing cut "Nov27" is a razor sharp slab of Chicago style acid jack laden with suitably alien electronics.

  1. Large Mammals (5:15)
  2. Existential Energy (3:59)
  3. DX Hell/HVN (4:37)
  4. No More Knives (5:34)
Review: It would be fair to say that Super Hexagon is Leeds' main night when it comes to the darker side of house and electro. Sure, the music is played week in and week out on plenty of sound systems, but this crew like to focus on those sounds exclusively... and they know just how to deliver the goods! They've snatched up UK electro producer, J.Wiltshere, who we've come to recognise as an impressive new talent on the streets thanks to a pair of releases for the mighty Hypercolour. SH003 is the third instalment of the imprint, and "Large Mammals" gives the EP a worthy kick-start thanks to a raucous blend of gunshot percussion and metallic bass knots, which is further explored on the vicious bumps of the acid-ridden "Existential Energy". "DX Hell/HVN" takes a more laid back approach to the electro bruisings, coming through with a blissful techno groove filled with raw percussion patterns, while "No More Knives" surprisingly meanders in an ambient zone, bereft of any beats at all but primed with plenty of contained energy from the same industrial space as its siblings.

Through Worlds & Centuries
Through Worlds & Centuries (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DWT 008. Rel: 28 Oct 19
  1. Tagwell Woods - "The Bench On The Hill" (8:20)
  2. Castel - "Silverline" (4:40)
  3. Mihail P - "At The Worlds End" (5:09)
  4. HOLOVR - "An Expanded State Of Consciousness" (5:35)
Review: Following marvelous turns from the likes of Perseus Traxx and Stephen Lopkin, Distant Worlds returns with this heavy slice of emotional synthwave from a strong cast of characters. Tagwell Woods heads up the pack with some lingering, poignant leads and tasteful 303 wriggles, before Castel drops some seriously wiggy trance-out sounds into the mix (all still very much on the sensitive tip, of course). Mihail P returns to Distant Worlds to open up the B-side with a slow, break fuelled funk and soul-stirring melancholy, before the always-excellent HOLOVR completes the set with a distinctive and delicate romp through finely sculpted electronica.

Review: Soviett Records is a label set up by a crew of hardcore street music lovers. It draws from rock-n-roll and hip-hop and punk-rave and is on a mission to "release music with a positive intent." The first offering is a great start: it serves up 17 glistening tracks of sparkling and analogue electro, boom-bap and hip-hop that harks back to the 80s but has one foot in the future. This is body music to make you move, complete with scratching, tons of 808s and 909s and funk to spare.
