Review: Phil Heeks' debut as The British Stereo Collective came in the form of 2021's magnificent album Mystery Fields. The record paid stunning homage to 1970s library LPs and soundtrack compilations in great depth and detail. Now, the long-awaited sequel, Iniquitous, follows in its footsteps. This one complies two decades' worth of TV music from an alternate reality, all with a great understanding of the era. It has been perfectly sequenced too so that it plays out like a standalone listening experience and it comes on lovely limited edition coloured vinyl.

There Is Space Under Your Seat (3:05)
Dreaming Deep Diver (4:53)
Review: Apparently James Adam Brown had one very definitely theme in mind with There Is Space Under Your Seat. Put simply, he wanted to explore aural interpretations of the human desire to create mental breathing room by pausing emotions to process feelings when circumstances become overwhelming. And, let's face it, they frequently have a habit of doing just that.
Recorded at ICP Studios in Belgium, after demos were laid down in his own facility deep in the stunning Yorkshire Dales, it's hard to imagine a more fitting setting for these ideas to form. A place that's equal parts bleak and beautiful, and certainly remote (in UK terms, at least). So what we have here is sometimes eerie, always stunning, packed with spatiality and a tangible emotional quality you will not be able to escape from.

Review: Dohnavur (Frazer Brown and Alasdair O'May) and Kl(Aus) had been working on a full-length album for years; it took until early 2022 for the UK's Castles In Space to receive word that it still wasn't finished, after which its head honcho Colin Morrison took it upon himself to shake up the format, so as to spur on its completion: "I had an idea. Let's open the portal between Edinburgh and Sydney and let two of Castles in Space's longest-standing artists loose on each other's tracks and see what we get. The idea being, original track, remix, flip, original track, remix, flip. The result was Dohnavur/Kl(Aus), a shockingly long but compelling ten-piece record made up of three originals and two remixes of the other's work each, respectively. An interplay of superbly grand, futuristic proportions, befitting of a pristine, techno-sublime, neo-Arcadian vision.

Review: Field Lines Cartographer is an alias of Mark Burford and now it is back with a new album-length adventure, Phases Of This & Other Moons. As the title suggests, this is cosmic ambient exploration made using just one Buchla synth and plenty of other sci-fi electronics. It finds him tease the very most out of his machine then feeding it through an array of effects pedals to twist and distorted the sound into alien forms. If you like the more out there work of Zeit-era Tangerine Dream and Michael Stearns then this is one trip you need in your life.

Review: UK based musical collective Jilk have made a name for themselves as specialists of a particular type of understated electronica. Some, including their own members, have compared it to the sound of a haunted bedroom, which kind of makes sense. It's intimate, there's a deeply humanistic and acoustic bent to the work, and so much tangible atmosphere you can sense the spirits surrounding each arrangement.
Syrup House is no exception to the rule, but we do find the gang bringing elements of analogue house to the fore, and merging this to great effect with dream pop and tender instrumentation. Deep, immersive music that is at once playful yet thoughtful, reflective but forward thinking, and - at times - surprisingly dance floor ('128 Rushes', for example). A quiet epic, for want of phrasing that feels a little less cliched.

Review: The Mount Vernon Arts Lab is the work of Drew Mullholland, an underground legend who started the project in the late 1990s. He worked under several different aliases throughout his career and this one stuck with its experimental approach to electronic sounds. This special reissue comes on purple vinyl and has been mastered by Antony Ryan at RedRedPaw from tapes thought to be lost to forgotten and chaotic rehearsal spaces. The sounds are a window into an alternative world where instead of the prevalent Britpop and phoney psychedlia-lite sounds of the time, we get fully roasted electronic acid and indie.

Review: Kevin Pearce's Science Fiction Ballads For The Lost Generation emerges as a riveting exploration of sonic storytelling and atmospheric nostalgia. Inspired by Vangelis' evocative 'Blade Runner' soundtrack, Pearce conceived the album as a cinematic journey, crafting a collection of songs that embody a sense of mystery and introspection. Initially recorded as a personal experiment, the album remained hidden for years until Pearce rediscovered it by chance. With its unearthed quality, Science Fiction Ballads exudes a timeless allure, reminiscent of audio fossils waiting to be discovered. Fans of soundtracks everywhere should really be interested in this release.

Review: Divided Time '79 by Jonathan Sharp takes listeners on a sonic journey from London to New York in 1979. Building on the earlier volume, which captured the essence of the early 70s, this album delves into the experiences of a 12-year-old navigating the cultural contrasts between the two cities. With vivid descriptions of iconic landmarks, bustling streets, and the stark realities of Thatcher's Britain, Sharp paints a compelling picture through his music. Known primarily as The Heartwood Institute, Sharp demonstrates his versatility and authenticity in this personal project. Drawing on his expertise in soundtracking and library music, he creates a rich tapestry of sounds that transport listeners to another time and place. From the bustling streets of New York to the quiet countryside of upstate New York and Connecticut, each track evokes a sense of nostalgia and wonder. Divided Time '79 is a shinning example to Sharp's artistry and ability to capture the essence of a moment in time through music.

Review: Dean Honer and Kevin Pearce - a pair of musicians and critics enmeshed in the British music landscape since day dot - grew so sick of the manufactured children's songs they'd heard on vinyl and CD over the years that they decided to create their own version, albeit with a twist. 'The Sound Of Science' is a tongue-in-cheek rendition of this unique utility music format, designed to bypass its tendency to quickly "become a form of torture" for the adults in each other's families. Instead, this album is fun for both the kids and the parents, with science and astronomy forming the bulk of its themes.

Review: Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan is the musical project of Gordon Chapman-Fox, who creates electronic music inspired by the history and architecture of the New Town (capital N, capital T) he grew up in, Warrington-Runcorn. The Nation's Most Central Location is his fourth album, and explores the theme of the north-south divide in the UK and the broken promises of regional town development - brutal concrete expressed in musical form. Its eight tracks mix ambient, synthpop and industrial, with samples from documentaries, speeches and adverts making up its vocal parts. The album is a nostalgic and critical reflection on the past and present of his hometown, exclusively reflecting on its place in the nation.

Shared Sense Of Purpose (1973 version) (4:22)
Review: 'A Shared Sense Of Purpose' is a fittingly collectively-minded name for a new Gordon Chapman-Fox aka. Warrington Runcorn New Town Development Plan release. The first glimpse of his latest full-length LP, Your Community Hub, this first sampler hears the artist continue to develop his totally singular vision in eerie modernist electronica, deploying lilty arpeggiations and contradictorily Utopian, yet at the same time, sinister, melodies and ambiences; all with a view to producing an uncanny deja entendu. These are deployed to mourn the slow, increasing privatisation of Chapman-Fox's native Warrington-Runcorn, specifically its singular bespoke town centre - its walkways, its local postal system, its gridded shop lots - which were all designed to make it a five-minute city, long before the concept of fifteen-minute cities had entered town planning discourse. Though, perhaps this lament masks a more sinister sense of enjoyment, as there is indeed a perverse sort of pleasure that arises in the bittersweetly uncanny perfumes that waft from this latest haunted mood piece. Perhaps just like the experience of revisiting Warrington-Runcorn after having known it in childhood, we hear both sadness and euphoria, at the same time, in the face of its ostensible loss.

Review: Gordon Chapman-Fox's latest album, Your Community Hub, delves into the New Towns movement, particularly focusing on Warrington-Runcorn's community centers and their relevance to modern urban planning discussions like the 15 Minute City concept. The album explores the decline of these centers and the services they once offered, paralleling a broader societal shift away from communal support. Through evocative album artwork featuring architect Peter Garvin's work, notably the Castlefield Community Centre, Chapman-Fox paints a vivid sonic picture of a bygone era of community cohesion. Following the success of 2023's The Nation's Most Central Location, this album is poised to continue Chapman-Fox's critical acclaim and commercial success, offering a poignant reflection on the past and present state of communal life.
