Review: Adam Unsworth and Graham Lord are the DJ and production duo the Audiowhores. Hailing from Manchester, having first crossed paths in 2000, the pair's main musical influences stem from, among others, Dave Lee, Masters At Work, Full Intention and Jazz-N-Groove. Since 2003 their consistently quality output of original tracks and remixes has been housed by renowned labels including Soulfuric, Z, Gossip and Milk N 2 Sugars. Now Defected bring "I'm Inspired".

Walk A Mile In My Shoes (Calbum version)
Review: Coldcut return with the stand-out single from their critically-acclaimed album, "Sound Mirrors". The pioneering duo take Joe South's classic 70s hit "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" and re-work it in the tradition which started with their own "Autumn Leaves" and incorporates Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" amongst others. And, as usual, Coldcut know how to pick a collaborator. Robert Owens should need no introduction. One of the true legends of house music, his career as a musical innovator (as well as the possessor of an all-time great voice) runs from pioneer days as one half of Fingers Inc in Chicago in the 80s right up to collaborations with Photek and London Elektricity, via any number of classic tunes including "Tears", "I'll Be Your Friend" and "Ordinary Son". The version of the tune included on the single ties the epic nature of Coldcut's production to a skipping, swinging house rhythm and the kind of anthemic build that leaves you exhausted. It's a truly beautiful piece of music, the contrast between the delicacy of Owens' voice and the weight of the orchestration perfectly realised. And that's before you've even reached the mixes. Tiga takes the original, strips out the music and replaces it with technoid pulses and a harder dancefloor rhythm, with the sweetness of Owens' voice cutting through the intensity. Henrik Schwarz (of Berlin-based Sonar Kollektiv) builds the original into a melancholy, jazzy number which still sets the foot tapping. Tom Belton goes straight for the disco-funk hands-in-the-air jugular, before Timo Garcia hardens up the kick for a full-on club odyssey.

Review: While rooted in jazz, the output of Bristol outfit Ishmael Ensemble has always incorporated elements from different styles - something we attribute to main man Pete Cunningham's prior career as a DJ and a producer, as well as his long involvement in the eclectic-minded Bristol music scene. It's perhaps fitting then that the band's latest missive is a five-track collaboration with another West Country hero, MC, singer and producer Rider Shafique. His role as a "dub poet" is explored on largely ambient opener 'C90 Intro', while he channels the spirit of Tricky and Massive Attack on jazz-meets-trip-hop jam 'Polestar'. Elsewhere, 'Reasons' is a hazy, rising and atmospheric contemporary jazz song, 'Salam' is a harp-infused ambient soul song, and 'New Era' is a thrilling jazz epic.

Review: Peeping Tom is Mike Patton's most accessible work since his days in Faith No More, and "Mojo" is the lead single off the acclaimed "Peeping Tom" album (five years in the making!). This is part one in a series of collaborative projects Patton is planning to release under the Peeping Tom umbrella. Patton teams up with his San Francisco Bay Area running buddy Dan "The Automator" Nakamura for the effortlessly contagious music behind the single, while Rahzel (beat boxer from the Roots) throws in some hard rhymes on the back of his throaty percussion, allowing Patton to play grand conductor and front man par excellence. "Mojo" will be available on a limited edition of 1000 seven inch on two different mind-bending coloured vinyls and CD single. Both formats feature an exclusive non-album track written by a solo Patton called "Preschool" which is as inventive as it is fun. Fans of Patton and Peeping Tom will be flipping out to get their hands on this new song.

Review: Rameses III are architects of the most beautiful swathes of blissful ambience. "Honey Rose" have the South London trio build a soundtrack to Jon Spira's mysterious short film "Suityman". Whilst the influence of Bruce Langhorne, Boxhead Ensemble and much of the 4AD roster can be keenly felt on this six song EP, so too can the wondrous drone narratives that are such a feature of Rameses III's previous works. More structured and melodious then much of their output, "Honey Rose" is the perfect place for a newcomer to begin exploring the music of one of the finest purveyors of ambient drone operating in music today.

Review: A somewhat atypical indie outfit by any standard, The Rank Deluxe share as much of an affinity with old school UK punk or grime as they do with any of their more immediately apparent musical contemporaries. Often playing in or amongst the crowd, live shows are frenetic, full of youthful exuberance, occasionally divisive, but always fun. Informed by reggae, ska, punk, and rock and roll, The Rank Deluxe's sound is vibrant, pop savvy and uncompromising. Varying in style from cathartic pop to stabby, dub rhythms, lyrically the band align themselves with the social commentary of UK-based artists such as The Specials, Gang Of Four, or even Ian Dury. The band's name is taken from a glamour model's comment, overheard entering a strip club above the band's old rehearsal space. "This place is so rank deluxe" she said; apparently meaning the height of scum. Drawn to the multiple implications, they took the phrase as their own. Four 20-something's from South East London, Lew and Rich grew up on the same estate in Thamesmead, South East London, and the band's current line up formed early in 2005. The band refer to their music as "a sonic picture of council estate youth", but what so often can seem little more than empty posturing is backed up by a strong sense of identity, and an aptitude and commitment that is beyond their short lifespan.

Review: Red Hot Chili Peppers release 'Tell Me Baby' on July 17th as the second single to be taken from their epic double-album 'Stadium Arcadium' that many critics believe to be the band's finest collection to date. Combining a sublime chorus that matches the best of the band's recent work with Flea's trademark frenetically free-flowing bass, 'Tell Me Baby' encapsulates the characteristics that have made the Chilli Peppers one of the world's biggest bands. The release of 'Tell Me Baby' coincides with a major Summer stadium tour that represents the band's first shows on these shores since their gargantuan Hyde Park gigs back in 2004.

Review: Second solo single from Jim Reid. A further slab of Velvet Underground tinged brooding Reidism, and a song road tested in recent months live shows, also previously performed on live radio sessions. Fresh from the Mojo Awards, Jim plays two live shows in the next few weeks. The Mary Chain force is strong at the moment with five albums reissued by Rhino/Warners in July, with Mojo publishing a full length article to coincide. Reviews in the other press already coming through, including full page in Uncut with more interview speak from Jim. Mojo also have a track by Jim on the present months cover mount, a version of the Beatles "And Your Bird Can Sing". All press coverage carry print details of the new single and the release date. Radio 2, BBC 6 and key regional radio airplay as before, with further live sessions booked. B-sides exclusive to single CD only. Follows on the back of great press for Jim and the Mary Chain, "The godfathers of British indie-rock", Jesus And Mary Chain receive the MOJO Maverick Award for their groundbreaking use of the Wall-Of-Sound principle which has influenced at least two generations of acts following in their wake.

Review: Roman Revutsky possesses a genuine sensibility of pop. He is a singer/songwriter who, directly from the four walls of his house in freezing Siberia, still has the warmth to keep his tender heart alive, pumping strange stories told by a soft and charming voice that will hardly be unnoticed. With a naïve attitude, Revutsky fills the gap nineties indietronica left between rock and electronic music: earnestness and reality.

En La Discoteca Reggaeton
I'm In A Dancing Mood
Review: The title of veteran singer-songwriter Jonathan Richman's latest EP, Yatasamaroun, is an Arabic word that, roughly translated, means 'lovers talking softly together in the moonlight'. It's perhaps fitting, then, that the title track is a gorgeously exotic, steamy and moonlit affair that fuses North African, Andalucian and Middle Eastern instrumentation with spoken word monologues and Arabic singing. It's a fine, intoxicating musical brew that makes an even greater impact in the included 'Extended Mix' form. Elsewhere across the CD single, 'En La Discoteca Reggaeton' is a jangling, bluesy chunk of global musical fusion that's bold and infectious enough to suggest that it could work on open-minded dancefloors, while 'I'm In a Dancing Mood' sees Richman add his David Byrne-esque lead vocals to a Flamenco-inspired workout.

She's Got Standards
In Between Days (live on Zane Lower Radio 1)
Review: Despite their relatively short tenure within rock'n'roll, The Rifles are exuding the self-contained air of a band that that characterize British pop's most vital bloodline from The Kinks to The Smiths to The Streets. That's not all. Fuelled by a bleak London wit and a cinematic vision which takes in everything from 'Nil By Mouth' to 'The Warriors' ("We're gonna come on stage to the theme music!" beams Luke) their adrenaline assault is, well, double barreled. The single is the third track to be lifted from their forthcoming debut album 'No Love Lost' (Out July 3). 'She's Got Standards' is classic British songwriting from a band on the verge of breaking through into the mainstream. Their previous single, 'Repeated Offender' landed safely inside the Top 30 and 'She's Got Standards' is set to emulate this success.

Review: 2006 is turning out to be Rihanna's year... she has had two smash hit singles and her album has gone platinum. Now that success is all set to continue and increase with the release of a brand new single and some exciting tour news. On the 23rd October 2006 Def Jam release the single 'We Ride'. The single is taken from her second album 'A Girl Like Me' which has already produced the monster hits 'SOS' and 'Unfaithful'. Both those tracks made it to #2 in the UK charts, as did her debut single 'Pon De Replay', and helped propel her album to platinum sales status. Later in the year Rihanna will be joining the Pussycat Dolls on their European arena tour which hits the UK in Late November and climaxes at London's Wembley Arena on the 1st December. Rihanna made her movie debut with a cameo role in 'Bring It On 3' which has recently been released on DVD.

Review: Rogue Traders "Watching You" has a raunchy dirty dance vibe with grinding guitars that sound like they were lifted from the Knack and vocals very much on the Moronica "I'm A Rocker Now Tip". Remixes come via Chris Lake who provides a rocking electro house remix and Dirty South who provide an equally banging dub.

Review: D:Vision Records returns with another piece of soulful, deep house. This time courtesy of Italian, Francesco Rossi who delivers an ethnic sounding slice of driving house merged with the sounds of a guitar. Its percussive sounds keeps the energy high, making it the perfect addition for any DJ wanting to smash the room.

Review: For their latest exploration of the darker and rougher end of the electro spectrum, Dutch imprint Freedom Club has turned to pitch-black urban electronics explorer RTRA, a Russian artist whose tracks tend towards the paranoid, industrial-tinged and claustrophobic. He's certainly delivered on Liberation, a five-track EP appearing on CD in highly limited numbers. He sets the tone with 'Transition', which sounds like Nitzer Ebb and early 80s Cabaret Voltaire making angular electro, before doffing a cap to DAF on the dark, noisy and apocalyptic 'Liberation'. Elsewhere, modular and analogue sounds power the mutant electro of 'Rage' and 'When Soft Voices Die', while 'Illusion' is creepy, intoxicating and unsettling in equal measure.

Review: Within the past 18 months the unusual Russian Balkan ska group Russkaja became a virtual cross-over cult music group. Their concerts are driven by a perfectly choreographed stage show fuelled by Russkaja's 100% physical and musical commitment as well as by the enthusiasm of their constantly growing fan community. "Dope Shit" is their great new single out on Chat Chapeau.

Review: Real Russian vodka is made of rye. Real Russian ska is made by Russkaja. Though the ingredients are different, the effect is the same. Vodka and Russkaja hit you right between the eyes! The gigs of Russkaja are orgies of powerful rhythm, freaky vocals, ecstatic dance and they are electrifying the audience like hardly any other live-act. Russkaja have skarring the world since early 2005. A year for Russkaja means 64 gigs in 4 countries, more than 15,000 kilometers on the road. Now in 2006, right in time for the one year celebration here comes the first EP named "Dawai". It contains the first four tracks Russkaja did record in the studio and without doubt it's a perfect appetizer for the album to come. Since one thing is for sure: Russkaja are like the effect of Vodka. Unpredictable and powerful.

We Enter (Optical remix - instrumental v2.0)
Review: This record is part of a new remix bundle by Ryme Tyme, a veteran MC and producer from London who has worked with artists such as Ed Rush, Optical, Fierce, Trace, and Bad Company. 'We Enter' is one of his classic tracks from 1999, eschewing his MCing for a neat exercise in raw techstep and electrifying chordwork. Originally somewhat famous for its breakdance music video, the original track actually doesn't appear here, owing to its apparent dwarfing by several more neurofunky remixes from Optical. Optical made several versions of the remix, versions two and three of which appear here.
