As One (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: PSI 001. Rel: 29 Jun 20
  1. Sky's The Limit (7:50)
  2. As One (6:51)
  3. Orbiting (6:36)
Review: Strap in for a wild techno ride on the first ever offering from Psionic. The new label kicks off with an EP from Astral Travel. The aptly named artist reaches for beyond the event horizon on "Sky's The Limit", with its punchy kicks and relentlessly wobbly bass. "As One" gets into a nicely mechanical groove built on stomping kicks and rigid synth movements that make for perfectly robotic funk and the trip closes out with "Orbiting." With its urgent drums that are smooth and silky and serene synth work, it's one for peak time techno cruising.

  1. Jive Kept Me Live (5:37)
  2. Over Cold Seas (5:38)
  3. Headhunter (5:39)
  4. Savage Nights (6:28)
Review: Developer is back on Modularz with more steel-clad techno machinations for your toolkit. "Jive Kept Me Live" has a stern cyclical core, but there's a rich spectrum of tonality pulsing around this rhythmic focus to keep your brain twitching as heartily as your feet. "Over Cold Seas" centres around a particularly unsettling synth hook that sounds as though it's trying to punch through from another plane of existence, and "Headhunter" brings some more overtly melodic themes to the forefront. "Savage Nights" closes things out with the kind of unnerving techno incantations that you might expect to hear from Terrence Dixon - anyone who knows their techno knows that's high praise indeed.

Cat: SL 1. Rel: 20 Apr 20
  1. Slowhand (10:21)
  2. Tall For His Height (5:17)
  3. Kez (7:15)
Review: Seminal reissue alert! Baby Ford had already been a chart-baiting acid house superstar by the time he launched the PAL SL label in 1996. He'd left behind the major label scene and moved firmly back into the underground with exploratory techno releases on Ifach and collaborations with Mark Broom. This new label marked a shift for Ford though, setting him up for the trips into minimalist club tracks that have been his bread and butter for decades now. From the machine soul trysts of "Slow Hand" to the woozy techno thrust of "Tall For His Height" and the atmospheric house wriggle of "Kez", this release is a classic through and through. Beat the sharks and nab a copy of this long out-of-print gem.

Muck EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MGM 06. Rel: 21 Oct 19
  1. Alpha Decay
  2. Tachyon
  3. Muck
  4. Stocha
Review: The sixth installment on Malin Genie's self-titled label welcomes Will & Ink resident Yaleesa Hall into the fold. Regular collaborators Malin and Yaleesa have turned out plenty of joint 12"s in the past on Will & Ink and this very label, and they sound more comfortable and sonically aligned than ever on this mighty record. There's no messing with "Alpha Decay," a loose and lysergic dubby techno workout. "Tachyon" orbits a similar soundworld, but shears the fat away for a minimal palette that sounds powerful echoing around the ample space in the mix. "Muck" slips into freaky after hours house territory, and "Stocha" drops a massive Basic Channel dub techno chord around a whisper of a beat to devastating effect.

Synesthesia
Cat: OYSTER 21. Rel: 14 Feb 20
  1. Synesthesia (6:02)
  2. Synesthesia (Anthony Naples remix) (7:59)
  3. Synesthesia (Pariah remix) (7:31)
Review: French producer Nathan Melja has amassed a spotless discography on the likes of Mister Saturday Night, Antinote and Opal Tapes, and now debuts on Kalahari Oyster Cult with another terrific offering. "Synesthesia" is futuristic sci-fi techno with shiny synth lines and a hurried kick pattern that gets you on your toes while the bassline burrows deep. TTT affiliate and Incienso co-founder Anthony Naples steps up with the first remix. His version is more dreamy thanks to the array of background pads, then closing things out is Pariah with a punch groove that leaves the original's prying lead intact. Essential stuff.

  1. MDM Anal (7:01)
  2. Don't Get Caught (5:54)
  3. Acid Royale (6:50)
  4. Go Skiiing (5:03)
Review: All hail the return of our goal-scoring squelch lord, Roy Of The Ravers. Kicking the grass up back where he belongs on Acid Waxa, the modern acid hero sounds as crucial as ever on this cheeky EP. "MDM Anal" is a sludgy cut revolving around a bloated bass arp and really simple kick-clap beat. "Don't Get Caught" ramps up the 303 action for some smart acid jack with a little extra spring in its step. "Acid Royale" is more of an epic saga for those who like a sense of narrative with their jack, in this case coming on like a late-'80s role-playing book. Rolling the dice and turning to the B2, we're confronted with the simultaneously gorgeous and unhinged "Go Skiing", which sounds like it could stack it on a mogul at any moment.

Roccale (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VV 016. Rel: 02 Mar 15
  1. You Say I For Me
  2. Corrib Chun Mask
  3. Spry - Env
Review: Valcrond Video invites you into the world of Helmer's "Roccale". Helmer's second release picks up the pummel that began with his first release, and continues the attack with three tracks of thoughtful, pulsing darkness. "You Say I for Me" presents a forbidding metallic landscape, a snake winds through it in the aural form of an eerie growl, making its way among the crunch and clutter to periodically emerge and rear with menace. "Corrib chun Mask" is what they play for prisoners sentenced to hard labor in the gulag of the future, if hard labor = dancing for days. "spry -Env", the closing piece on Roccale, is perhaps Helmer's most masterfully evocative. We have walked in on a ritual, dominated by an incense pendulum that swings and smokes, and carries with it the sound of an ancient transgression.

  8. Blow (6:52)
Review: Libertine's popular "Traditions" series is now three years old and 15 releases deep. The latest artist to showcase their wares is Mark Wilkinson AKA Kid Machine, a producer who has previously offered up intoxicating throb-jobs on Red Laser, Cyberdance and Viewlexx. In keeping with his trademark style - think dark, foreboding and occasionally panicked fusions of Italo-disco, EBM, NYC freestyle and space disco - the eight tracks on show cannily combine moody, arpeggio-drivem grooves with hazy chords, sparkling synthesizer sounds, and chiming melodies that recall the synth-heavy horror soundtracks of John Carpenter. The quality threshold remains high throughout, meaning it should be a must-have for those in love with the more muscular and throbbing end of the electronic disco spectrum.

  8. Dance Or Die (6:16)
  9. Small Town Yoky 11 (5:37)
Review: Libertine's 14th release is something of a beast: a double-EP from sometime My Own Jupiter Producer Do Or Die that squeezes in nine impressively varied tracks. The fast-rising producer's roots are of course in techno and electro, but he's not shy in exploring every avenue of these wide-ranging genres. For proof, compare and contrast the acid-fired, new wave-influenced bubbliness of "Galactic Bang Bang", the fast-paced acid-electro intensity of "Blackmail", the Italo-disco style throb-job "Morning To Lose", and the chiming, all-action cheeriness of quirky closing cut "Small Town Yoky 11". The rest of the double-pack maintains this interconnected eclecticism, portraying Do Or Die as a producer with a head full of ideas and an eccentric musical vision of his own.

  1. Newoldgen (5:59)
  2. Descontrol (6:19)
  3. Altered States (6:08)
Review: There's no doubt that Suara is one of the most popular techno labels in the world at the moment, with boss man Ivan Ramos aka Coyu heading up the imprint out of his Barcelona headquarters - accompanied by a large clowder of felines. Ramos takes charge of proceedings for the third edition in its special vinyl edition series titled 'Post War Era', featuring the thumping and syncopated tribal funk of "Newoldgen" which calls to mind golden age classics by the likes of Oliver Ho and Ben Sims from wayback when. On the flip, you've got the futuristic peak time banger "Descontrol" which is something more familiar of his usual style, and finally the pummelling mentalist tunnel vision of "Altered State" which must be fully realised in a dark warehouse under the strobe lights.

  3. El Sonido (4:37)
  4. El Sonido (No Vox) (4:39)
Review: Number 20 drops on Truncate and plunges us back into a world of chiseled, deadly serious techno. "Repeat" opens things up with some slowly modulating themes that teasingly evolve from veiled threat to clear and present danger. Luis Flores takes on a remix of the track that adds some industrial heft to the rhythm section and leaves a generous dose of white noise debris in its wake. "El Sonido" is a wound up jacker dreaming of peak time - a tight but swinging groove bringing the funk and end of the world interplay between the nervy synth line and the displaced vocal snippets. There's also a "No Vox" version of the track if that voice doesn't do it for you.

  3. Renaissance (Innershades remix) (4:43)
  4. Stasis (6:24)
Review: Marco Pellegrino is Ancut, and here he make his debut on Wicked Bass with more fresh cuts that show off his ever evolving style. His opening statement is a strong one that finds him making his machines really dance - the drums are bumpy, the pads soulful, but there is a lithe looseness to the whole thing that stands it out. After "Sinergia", "Renaissance" is a more wonky late night tech house workout with twisted pads and spinning hi hats underpinned by double kicks. Innershades remixes with a slick Chicago energy and analogue hits, then "Stasis" trips you out with bubbly acid lines, smeared pads and the sort of dreamy emotions that capture your imagination at 4am.

Another View (feat Inga Mauer, The Golden Filter mixes)

  1. Another View
  2. Together In The Dark
  3. Together In The Dark (Inga Mauer remix)
  4. Another View (The Golden Filter Revision)
Review: Snap, Crackle & Pop does the business once again as Berlin-based producer Curses steps up with the distinctly 1980s new wave stylings of "Another View". It's the kind of track that will have lovers of early The Cure, Sisters Of Mercy et al dancing in a hazy fever dream where early goth and indie meets with contemporary beats. "Together In The Dark" makes the point even clearer with a brooding trip through languid guitar, beyond the grave vocals and scuffed drums. Inga Mauer takes an entirely different tact with her remix of the latter track, conjuring up a particularly chilling acid daemon to jangle the nerves before The Golden Filter spook out "Another View" with heavy doses of reverb.

Review: Not all types of techno suits the album format, though that's not an accusation you could level at Derek Carr's particular brand of melodic, sci-fi-fired retro-futurism. "Pursuit Part 1" (a second volume will drop shortly) proves this point, delivering a suite of mostly club-ready cuts that can easily be listened to from start to finish in the comfort of your own home. It's full to bursting with warm, melodious, bass-heavy tackle, much of which combines his usual starry synths and deep space electronics with grooves which are far more influenced by dub techno than much of Carr's output. Highlights include the two-part "Not Tonight", the TB-303 powered "Acid Bath", and the glistening ambient/IDM lusciousness of "Nightfall".

  1. No 70007 (part 1) (7:19)
  2. No 70007 (part 2) (7:30)
Review: Man of many aliases Rene Pawlowitz has recorded under many pseudonyms over the years, though it's his Shed and Head High monikers that tend to get the most interest. Here he delivers a rare outing as Wax, a nom-de-plume he first used 11 years ago. A-side "No. 70007 (Part 1)" is a bona-fide techno club cut built around a rubbery rhythm track that boasts far more swing than your average Berlin production, with Pawlowitz's selected musical elements - drowsy, almost ghostly chords and slowly rising strings - only coming to the fore as the track progresses. The flipside "Part 2" version expertly re-arranges the same elements, breaking up the beats further while adding a druggy, almost metallic stab to add a frisson of intensity.

  5. Tagebuch (4:53)
Review: Blind Allies are an unstoppable force in the slimy underbelly of electro right now, and they're back with another shell shocker on the bounce from Zeta Reticula's "Sonic Assault". This time around Void Cells (Bristol-based Latvian producer Aleksejs Apolskis) makes a pointed return following the digital release Perception Model back in 2018. The drums rain down hard on this record, not least on punchy electro bruiser "SHE". NX1 offers up a rabble rousing techno twist on the original, before "Saturated Faces" opens up the B side with another fist-shaking slab of 4/4. Behind the grubby demeanour of the music lies some serious craft, making this a must-check for those looking in the more interesting corners of the electro boom.

  2. Keppel - "Taken For Granted" (6:38)
  3. Henry Greenleaf - "Snide" (4:59)
  4. Formant Value - "Polycausa" (7:03)
Review: Well Street keep up the heat as one of the most inventive labels operating in the liminal space between techno, dub and rhythmic mysticism. These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

Review: London-based producer Nite Fleit has been busy over the past couple of years slinging out rough and ready club cuts with bags of personality on labels like Unknown To The Unknown and Planet Euphorique. Now she returns to Steel City Dance Discs, the Australian label that provided her first break back in 2018, with a new EP, with some rabble rousing rave busters that span styles, gleefully cherry picking the feistiest ingredients to make surefire bangers. "All New Low" is particularly fierce with its massive monosynth bassline grind and ear-snagging sample hooks. Elsewhere there's plenty of electro punishment waiting - don't sleep on B2 belter "Little Monsters" in that regard.

Review: "Abyssopelagic" is the third release on Tresor Berlin resident Marcel Heeses label Finitude Music. This time he teamed up with d_func. aka legendary Berlin producer Alexander Kowalski who has been around for almost 20 years and surely needs no further introduction. The title track is a slow piece of nautical Techno aiming at the bigger floors. As the title suggests the B-Side includes a stripped-down version of "Abyssopelagic" for the deeper moments on the floor.

Review: A sticker on the front of this 12" from Brussels-based Basic Moves proudly proclaims that 100 per cent of sales royalties will be donated to charity. It's a nice move and one that should guarantee that the record is taken even more seriously. Like much of the label's output, it boasts self-styled "outsider club music", this time from Casablanca-born DJ Booth and label co-founder Walrus. DJ Booth handles side A, first romping his way through a bleeping, intoxicating, peak-time techno club jam ("Defaulted (Industry)"), before reaching for the breakbeats, deep electronics and electro shuffle on the superb "The Door". On side B Walrus takes over. "Can't Get New Shoes" is a bubbly, acid-fired chunk of electro/techno crunchiness, while "Free City Light" is notably deeper jazzier and way more melodic.

Samuel Jabba is the label co-founder of a new vinyl only label called From the Void Above. Hailing from Bogota, Colombia, Samuel is a young DJ and talented producer who creates music spanning different genres of electronic music.

On his debut release for Blkmarket Music, the A side starts off with his electro track 'Acid Pleasure' on A1. The A2 track 'Space Mirage' takes you on an outer space voyage focusing on the more deeper side of techno.

The B side kicks off with his heady breakbeat track 'Robotics' on the B1. On B2, Samuel takes us on a dark journey with his minimal electro track entitled 'Random Demise.'

Review: Stephane Lefrancois & Jameson Gilvarry team up for the latest 12" from the Secret Music label and find inspiration from a canine icon of space travel. "Laika" is named in honour of the first cosmonaut dog, depicted here on the cover art and Lefrancois and Gilvarry convey her journey through an uplifting, rolling techno cut that doesn't seem to stop building. Complementing the original is a remix from Dantiez Saunderson who strips down the groove, while giving it a swung, offbeat feel. Staying true to the original, this version also introduces another layer of melodic synths, extending the journey, making it deeper and moody. The booming, clean low end and bouncy high end keep the groove propelling forward.

He delivers an obscure trip through the 7th Chapter of the story, Warfare, the decisive battle between clones and humans for the reign of planet earth...no one is safe. This is a vinyl-only release and limited.

  3. That Woman From Michigan (6:59)
  4. FU Covid-19 (4:54)
Review: There can be nothing finer than a new hit of techno direct from the D. Brian Kage is the man behind the beats here and references the current coronavirus pandemic numerous times, starting with opener "Lockdown." It's a corrugate and jacking cut run through with acid lines and airy hi hats. "Hold On Pain Ends" is a warm dub current awash with subtle synth effects and a hypnotic sense of tension, then "That Woman From Michigan" features spoken word news snippets based on advice to stay at home and stay safe while acid lines undulate below in ever deeper circles. "FU Covid-19" is the tense, angsty techno banger you might expect of such a title.

  3. DJ Hell - "Copa" (5:47)
  4. DJ Hell - "Copa" (Wirski MISBHV edit) (5:31)
Review: Polish club-wear specialists MSBHV have previously put on a number of parties and events, so it's not that surprising to see them launch their own vinyl series in association with King of Kong Records. They've called in some heavy hitters for this debut outing, offering up unheard tracks from both Wolfram and DJ Hell. The former handles side A, opening with the industrial-strength, low-register acid riffs, hybrid electro/techno beats and whispered vocals of "Rein (MCNZI Remix)". DJ Hell re-edits his own remix of the same track, dipping the tempo and boosting the bass while retaining the acid-fired feel. Over on side B, Hell offers up a heavily mutilated chunk of chopped-up disco-jack ("Copa"), which is then turned into a sludgy slab of lo-fi disco-house by re-editor Wirski.
