Soul Of Haringey (reissue)
Pip Archer - "Time To Boogie" (4:52)
Andrea Lyn - "Hold On To Your Heart" (3:32)
Jennifer Viban - "Miracles" (4:00)
The Curruthers Brothers - "What Do Ya?" (4:09)
Boss - "Ease The Tension" (3:15)
Review: A fantastic dub disco, funk and electro record straight from the heart of North London. First released in 1986, 'Soul Of Haringey' emerged as the sole release on the ultra-rare Advance Level Enterprise imprint, information on which is, even now, extremely difficult to track down and source. Among the featuring artists on the release are Pip Archer, Andrea Lynn, Jennifer Viban, The Curruthers Brothers, and Boss, all of whom are almost equally obscure, and only a few of whom ever went on to release anything else. It's these kinds of records, seemingly unassailed by the material urgencies of working life or careerism, that beguile us the most. 'Time To Boogie' is as raw and uncut as can be, its trilling synth bells and double-claps revealing some early stirrings of UK grime in the track's latter half. Then there's the downtempo soul of 'Hold On To Your Heart' by Lynn, as smooth as smooth can be, while Viban's 'Miracles' is an equally blissful prayer to the electro-disco-funk tutelary god, with its numinous snare bursts and adhesively soft pad divans swearing fealty to the belief in miracles. Boss' and The Curruthers Brothers' contributions are just as creamy, offering two further authentic, homespun falsetto'ers for assuaging heartbreak and redemption.

As Meninas - "Redondo Sambao" (2:24)
Jorginho Telles - "Brasileiro" (3:02)
Review: You always know what you are going to get from Mr Bongo's Brazil 45 series and that is pure fire in musical form. This 100th release suggests the label has no intention of slowing down nor is it running low on top source material. This one from As Meninas on the A-side has beautiful female vocal-group arrangements with flutes that soar up top and plenty of ass-shaking samba shuffles down low. It's a tune that oozes soul and charm and was first released back in 1967. It's a super sweet but short song that is backed with 'Brasileiro' on the flip. It's taken from Jorginho Telles' self-titled 1971 album on Copacabana Records and mixes up raw guitar sounds with r&b vibes into something unusual and alluring.

Cat: BRUNSWICK 55311. Rel: 11 Jan 21
Lavern Baker - "Wrapped, Tied & Tangled" (2:05)
Jackie Wilson & Lavern Baker - "Think Twice" (2:31)
Review: This must-check "45" gathers together two in-demand gems from the glory days of funk and soul in the middle of the 1960s, both of which originally appeared on the iconic Brunswick label. Side A sports LaVern Baker's hard-to-find 1967 single 'Wrapped, Tied & Tangled', a breezy but heavy chunk of soul rich in jangling piano flourishes, punchy horns and languid grooves, all topped off with a killer lead vocal. Turn to the flip and you'll find Baker's 1965 collaboration with Jackie Wilson, 'Think Twice', a heavier, funk-fuelled outing that draws much inspiration from classic rhythm & blues. It goes without saying that both tracks are essential.

Bumble Bees
Cat: FRY 024. Rel: 31 Oct 17
Laverne Baker - "Bumble Bees" (2:30)
Lavern Baker & Jackie Wilson - "Think Twice (Rated X)" (2:24)
Review: For a classic 7" that makes you wish you could have experienced the rock and roll and blues heyday, these two dusty gems by Lavern Baker and Jackie Wilson are a great start. Taken from 1960, "Bumble Bees" by Baker is a chiming, doo-wop sing-a-long love song with a tastefully disgruntled character, while Baker & Wilson provide the excellent and X-rated "Think Twice", which sings about taboo topics like cocaine, pussy and reefa. It also boasts lyrics like 'son of a bitch', 'I aint gonna kiss your ass no more' and 'I've had enough of your shit' - not to mention the other out-there obscenities for the time which include references to oral sex. Lil Kim and Khia - eat your heart out!

No Es Por Ti
Cat: MSR 043. Rel: 23 Jan 25
No Es Por Ti (3:15)
Qu Ms Te Da? (3:03)
Review: Matasuna Records, based in Berlin, kick off their 2025 with a ladling of fresh soul soma food, this time by Barca's finest one-girl band The Blaxound (Marta Roman), in collaboration with singer John Vermont. Building on irreverent, vintage 60s pop from Spain, whose sound is categorically fiendish to replicate, the two artists have nonetheless managed a close hewing here. 'No Es Por Ti' showcases Vermont's throaty singing, lyrically playing out the eternally relatable breakup trope of "it's not you, it's me." Then 'Qu Ms Te Da?' follows with an affectingly syncopal rhythm, with a tightened snare played only on the 4, heightening the erotic tensity of the scene, driven by shuffling hats alone, whilst the artists' respective cools are kept.

Love Stormy Weather (4:09)
Crying For Your Love (4:02)
Review: Soul collectors have long considered Melvin Brown and James Matthews' "Love Stormy Weather" to be a slept-on classic. Initially released (and largely ignored) in 1976, it sits somewhere between the acoustic soul of Terry Callier, the dewy-eyed goodness of Rotary Connection, and the sumptuous jazz-funk that was all the rage in the late 1970s. Don't take our word for it, though: check out the sound clips for yourself. On the flipside you'll find a previously unheard gem from the duo: the impassioned, tear-jerking torch song "Crying For Your Love". Naturally it's a little fuzzy round the edges (the masters were probably sat in someone's loft for 30-odd years), but still sounds powerful and emotional.

Terry Callier - "Ordinary Joe" (4:14)
Jerry Butler - "Ordinary Joe" (3:26)
Review: On the latest edition of their excellent Soul Essentials series, Outta Sight has decided to bring together two versions of 'Ordinary Joe', a seemingly perennial favourite written by the late, great Terry Callier. His celebrated 1972 recording - all bold, sing-along choruses, organ stabs, jangling piano and lolloping grooves - breezes its way across side A, while Jerry Butler's earlier version, laid to tape in 1970, sits on side B. His version is much more expansive and musically detailed than Callier's take, with superb production from Gamble & Huff and some brilliant orchestral arrangements courtesy of Donny Hathaway. Both versions are, or course, incredible.

I Need Love (2:56)
Just Don't Love You (2:18)
Review: Fledgling boutique vinyl label Creative Soul continues to endear itself to soul lovers with this third lovely 7". It might be the best yet. It looks to 1979 album Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawd by a band from Alabama called Centaura. They were Budweiser Comp winners in 1983 and featured on the beer brand's Showdown singles as a result of winning. But before that came the album from which these tunes are taken. They were produced by Bob S Riley with the involvement of a then-prison co-inmate Johnny Bragg. The whole album got reissued in 2013 but Numero Group but this is the first time these two singles have been on one 7" and superb they are too.

My Echo, Shadow & Me (instrumental) (3:52)
Playing The Fool (instrumental) (3:48)
Review: Talk about being truly timeless. Chicano soul sensation Johnny Benavidez is the kind of artist who can figuratively, and spiritually, transport listeners to a golden age of Doo Wop, funk, and R&B, writing tracks and songs that glide on a smooth, easy listening cloud but still pack plenty of bite when it comes to the nitty gritty. Music to move you in many ways. Grandson of John Lorenzo Guzman (background vocalist for Sonny Powell & The Night-Dreamers), this relationship has a lot to answer for, with Pa encouraging Jr to take up singing and pursue music seriously. We're glad that happened, given My Echo Shadow & Me - a two tracker that could almost be considered retro or pastiche, if it didn't sound so damned fresh. Or at least ageless.

Jimmy Rogers - "What Have I Done" (alternative) (2:24)
Review: The Jazzman cometh! Gerald Short's long-running label is back with a new 7" serving on its Popcorn subsidiary featuring the moody and malevolent styles of jazzy crooner Lew Conetta. "You Got Me Crazy" originates from a '57 45 on the legendary Decca label and was one of only three releases from Conetta. On the flip, Popcorn present an alternate take on "What Have I Done" by bluesman Jimmy Rogers which is so similar to the Conetta track the label suggest it provided the inspiration for "You Got Me Crazy."

JEKYS - "Looking For You" (4:25)
Review: Favourite Records' new reissues series come with a new concept; each classic track comes with an exclusive bit of artwork on each side of the 12" sleeve. This time, they compile two speedy funk tracks from Crystal and J.E.K.Y.S.; 'Funky Biguine' is an homage to the French ballroom style of the same name, from which it draws influence, while 'Looking For You' is a devotional dream from J.E.K.Y.S., a French band singing in English. Slick, quick, and affecting stuff.

Johnny King & Fatback Band - "Keep On Brother Keep On" (2:05)
Review: Bill Curtis' Fatback Band is known around the world for its soul and disco hits but their roots actually lay in funk. They were one of the most impressive outfits around in that particular genre and so they have, for those who are willing to dig deep enough, plenty of rare funk gems to call upon from their earliest days. Here we get a couple of them with 'Dance Girl' - the last tune they released in 1974 before signing to Event/Spring. It was a real classic at block parties back in the day and on the flip is a tune that will cost you over L1000 if you can find an original, namely 'Keep On Brother Keep On' - the group's second single on Curtis BC Projects II label.

Review: Diamond & James, aka Jesse James and Shirley Diamond, unite for a timeless collaboration that will swell the heart. First introduced by the late Harvey Scales, Jesse and Shirley's partnership flourished over time while Shirley, an educator from Atlanta, balanced her performing career with teaching, always showcasing her talents on weekends and school breaks. She has graced stages alongside music icons like Atlantic Starr and Bobby Bland, proving herself to be a versatile talent with notable releases like 'You Don't Have To Be Sad, To Sing The Blues' and 'Strong Woman'. Review: This new tune on the crucial Original Gravity label finds Donnoya Drake covering the classic Shirelles joint 'Will You Love Me Tomorrow.' She re-sings the vocal in her own way, adding extra soul and spice, while the reggae rhythms swagger down low with plenty of drum fills and undulating guitar riffs. On the flip, Junior Dell & The D-Lites offer up 'I Can't Turn You Loose' which is a classic reggae sound with big horns energy and fat bottomed low ends all sweeping you up inna lovely rhythm that never lets up. Another 7"s of gold from this label.

Ja'Net Dubois - "Queen Of The Highway" (Kon edit) (4:30)
Jady Kurrent - "Standing There" (3:29)
Review: Backatcha Records can usually be relied upon to bring the goods, and this double A-side "45" is no exception. Side A boasts a fresh KON re-edit of the title track from Ja'net Dubois' fiendishly hard-to-find 1980 album "Queen of the Highway", a set that was for some reason only ever released in Brazil. It's a wonderfully sunny, horn-toting chunk of orchestrated jazz-funk/boogie fusion with definite Latin influences which Kon has expertly rearranged while steering clear of needless 21st century production trickery. Over on side B you'll find a previously unreleased cut from the Jady Kurrent Band, an obscure, Cleveland-based outfit who released a sole single in 1987. "Standing There" is a sweet slice of deep, mid-80s boogie rich in slap bass, slick lead vocals and '80s soul synths.

Review: There is currently only one copy of this on Discogs and it is listed at a rather eye watering L1200. Thankfully this reissue means you can own an undeniably brilliant tune for a much more reasonable price. It is a seminal New Orleans joint from the main man Eddie Bo who made it for the hugely popular group The Explosions. Juanita Brooks is the powerhouse soul sister who provides the vocals and on the other side is something just as good - a deep soul gem to warm you to your core.

Review: Favorite Recordings unearth two rare gems from the AOR Global Sounds series on this 7" single. Jonathon Hansen's track, recorded in 1978, captures a soulful AOR sound with heartfelt lyrics inspired by the breakup of his band. Backed by a close-knit group of musicians, the recording feels both intimate and timeless. On the flip, Jeff Silna's contribution channels the energy of Miami's TK Studios, blending funk-inspired grooves with smooth, melodic arrangements. Both tracks are a testament to the creativity of their era, lovingly reissued for collectors and fans of vintage soul.

If warming, glassy-eyed midtempo disco niceness is your thing, we'd heartily recommend this languid, sun-drenched edits offering from the Too Slow To Disco camp. It's packed to the rafters with toasty, afternoon-ready fare that's arguably best listened to while decked out in boat shoes, pastel-coloured shorts and a stripy t-shirt. HOLDTight steps up first with the head-nodding, saucer-eyed shuffle of future yacht disco classic 'Be My Love 2Nite', before Delfonic offers up a fine rearrangement of an obscure, breathy and seductive disco gem full of prominent Moog synth sounds, jaunty pianos and whispered vocals. 'Jorge's Pipa' by Jack Tennis is a fine, floor-friendly tweak of a disco-era Brazilian gem, while Those Guys From Athens' '4 Your Love' is a seductive disco slow jam straight from the top shelf.

This one features guitarist Daniels who was a key part of the B.B. King band ahead of later setting in Los Angeles and becoming a respected leader in his own right. He wrote just one for Kent Records and that was in 1973 as the label headed into its final days. 'Part 1' on the A-side is a driving funk cut aimed squarely at the club and heavy on inspiration from James Brown and the version on the flip levels up with organ playing from Earl Foster.

Review: A stunning soul double A with a percussion heavy smoky soul cover of Leroy Lane & The Upstairs Maids' "There's A Man" and a big-swing, horn-heaved late 60s Motown-style ballad "I Have This World & You". Canadian soul act Joey Irving & Just Us only wrote and recorded a handful of songs and - madly - they couldn't get a deal on home soil so turned to Belgium's Baltic label which was usually the sole preserve of elevator music and native Flemish folk. Few original pressings have been spotted, but when they do they regularly fetch over L200. Jump on this.

Review: Italian producer, music engineer and owner of The Sleepers Records, Ivan Makvel continues to service the modern funk scene, this time with his synth-pop and disco-funk fusion featuring Jolie Davenport's distinct vocals. 'Runaway' has a dense synth on its glittery instrumental, giving it that vintage workout video energy. Fitting considering the title. 'Like That' is more tongue in cheek with its zany instrumental: the synths are similarly thick, with almost deafening hand claps it's the perfect dancefloor filler. This 7" is a testament to the power of modern funk, housed on a super limited beautiful bone white disc. Makvel is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon.
