Vapour Waves
  1. Random Pain (5:47)
  2. HRL6 (6:54)
  3. Drive Shift (7:02)
  4. Drive Shift (The Hacker remix) (6:23)
Review: More from regular studio partners Assembler Code and Jenson Interceptor, whose previous joint EPs for Boyznoize, Private Persons and Cultivated Electronics were little less than essential. First, turn your attention to superb opener "Random Pain", a melodious and evocative deep electro cut that morphs into something dirtier, darker and far more hard-hitting midway through. "HRL6" is altogether moodier and more Drexciyan in tone, while flipside opener "Drive Shift" fixes elastic electronics and gently pulsing motifs to an altogether more relaxed and rolling 4/4 electro groove. It comes accompanied by an altogether darker and moodier remix by The Hacker that boasts raw electronics, spacey bleeps and a slightly paranoid vibe.

Random Patterns EP
  1. Turnin' Headz (5:28)
  2. Noise Theory (5:51)
  3. Otherside (5:00)
  4. Day 1 (5:45)
Review: Assembler Code & Jensen Interceptor are one of electro's most devastating duos right now. Mechatronica welcome them for four more hard hitting jams after their "Vapour Waves" EP on this label got plenty of people talking. These are tunes with an old school feel that will blow up your bass bins and tear apart your tweeters with their mix of low end heaviness and bright melodic patterns. Superbly urgent drum programming sweeps you off your feet and races you through astral skies on "Noise Theory", "Otherwise" has a raggedy-ass broken beat and "Day 1" has a blistering bassline of the highest order.

It's What We Live For: Volume 2
  1. BPMF - "Zu Heib Fur Uns" (5:44)
  2. Heidi Sabertoorh - "So You Want To Take Back Your Will" (6:37)
  3. Synapse - "Shiny" (locked groove) (0:30)
  4. Somatic Responses - "Strategy Of Desire" (5:22)
  5. John Selway - "Brainchild" (5:29)
  6. Pointsman - "Dirty Shirt" (locked groove) (0:30)
Review: Seminal New York City imprint Serotonin lives on. John Selway and Jason Szostek present It's What We Live For: Volume 2 - the second in a series of compilations sharing their vision of sounds of tomorrow. Szostek himself dons the well known BPMF alias again for some fierce breakbeat techno action on "Zu Heib Fur Uns", the equally legendary Healy brothers aka Somatic Response still going strong - as heard on the slo-mo acid trance journey "Strategy Of Desire" and relative newcomer Heidi Sabertooth of Opal Onyx delivers some sludgy electro-punk antics on "So You Want To Take Back Your Will". There's some handy locked grooves on the electro-bass tip featured too by Synapse and Pointsman, which were pretty wicked too.

Nothing Matters When We Are Dancing Vol 10: Cosmic Hole
  1. CPI - "Mount Anal" (8:14)
  2. Juan Ramos - "Skincrawler" (6:05)
  3. Kris Baha - "Paralleled" (6:53)
  4. Bezier - "Starpoint" (7:56)
Review: Notorious Discodromo helmed session CockTail D'Amore celebrate their 10th birthday with a compilation that highlights many different aspects of the much loved and musically adventurous Berlin party. The Cosmic Hole is the corner of the club that champions slower, freakier sounds, and the corresponding 12" kicks off in style with the throbbing acid chug of "Mount Anal" by CPI. Juan Ramos brings something of a nightmarish industrial clamour to "Skincrawler", while Kris Baha gets bombastic on the full-fat "Paralleled". Bezier completes the package with "Starpoint", a mystical affair shaped out by yearning strings and subtle rhythms.

Moderated Lies (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: INFILTRATE 07. Rel: 11 Jan 21
  1. Moderated Lies (4:59)
  2. The Least Resistance (5:46)
  3. Propeller (4:59)
  4. Logicphrenia (5:37)
Review: Alex Jann continues to be a vital force within the contemporary electro scene. Following standout spots on Unknown To The Unknown, DMK and Censor over the past couple of years, he now lands on Burnski's Infiltrate label with some especially taut, heads-down gear for those looking to stretch out the dynamics of their machine funk DJ sets. 'Moderated Lies' is a snappy, eerie workout with a rasping snare and nagging low-end synth hook, while 'The Least Resistance' works deeper dimensions of texture and atmosphere around a snaking beat. 'Propeller' is a more malevolent affair that ups the tempo and fires off a more snarling, acidic sound palette. 'Logicphrenia' revels in the richest sound design of the EP, sounding like an orchestra of malfunctioning machines locked into a serious groove. That's a good thing, obviously.

  7. Two Handed Engines (The WineLambs Project) (feat Dan Piu) (7:23)
  8. A New Life (5:00)
Review: Jesus Gonsev has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and now he's landed a hallmark achievement with "A New Life" on his own label Troubled Kids. The long playing format gives Gonsev the chance to build on his artistic identity, and he does so in style with a broad range of moods from soaring deep house to boogie soaked beat downs, atmospheric jackers to smoky vocal tracks. "Lost Cosmos" has a raging vocal that stays with you well after the icy house beats have finished rolling while "1981" brings more inviting deepness. The omnipresent Javonntte lends his voice to superbly spiritual deep house highlight "Salvation", and "El Conde Macula" lays down some deep and cavernous drums to get lost in. High class and timeless, "A New Life" gives you so many different vibes to sink into.

  2. Astra (Physical Therapy ESP mix) (7:29)
  3. Glacier (5:55)
  4. Shayla (5:37)
Review: Following up an impressive inaugural release which featured legend Silicon Scally, Joonam - the duo comprised of minimal techno veteran Elon and Nima Khalilian - returns to Brooklyn-based Balagan with the Astra EP featuring some more bass heavy electro beats. There's the darkly dystopian funk of the title track on the A-side, which is followed by an absolutely frantic rework by Allergy Season head Physical Therapy. On the flip, the bleak futurism continues with the suitably titled 'Glacier' which goes down a sublime and cavernous dub techno path, while the sparse and booming breakbeats of 'Shayla' create a captivating backdrop for a truly evocative arrangement. Tip!

  3. Red Axes - "Waiting For A Surprise" (Kris Baha remix) (7:21)
  4. Bal5000 - "Kids" (7:26)
Review: (Emotional) Especial heralds its 30th release with a killer package from an all-star cast that takes in label regulars and newcomers alike. The vibe starts heated and heavy with modern acid champ Roy Of The Ravers taking a blunt instrument or two to Junior Fairplay's "End Of Love," firing off the kind of bludgeoning b-line and fizzing drums that makes his direct approach to the dancefloor so potent. It's somewhat surprising to see Freeform Five pop up on this 12", but Jamie Paton's remix of "Throwing Stones" sounds utterly natural in the habitat - a brooding, simmering trip shot through with noirish synths. Kris Baha gets busy with Red Axes' "Waiting For A Surprise," twisting out an exotic bubbler perfect for the low tempo chugging crowd, and then Bal5000 wraps things up with the gorgeous electro-disco delights of "Kids".

Review: The Dom Trojga label is a product of the Warsaw scene. It is curated by underground mainstay Eltron and looks to convey some of the energy and sounds you might hear on any given weekend in the city's subterranean basements. This second EP brings together a wealth of new school talents to serve up some fresh takes on techno. There's cosmic synth funk from Poly Chain, sci-fi styled electro deepness from SLG and some harder hitting kicks from Bejenec & Jaxe before label boss Eltron closes things out with an experimental broken beat track to jack to club in the dead of night. Who fancies a trip to Warsaw?

Review: Long before the electro revival sent producers scurrying into the studio to create their own Drexciya-inspired jams, Jeremiah R was ploughing his own intergalactic furrow for labels including Tabernacle, BAKK and Voodoo Gold. As this fine mini-album shows, he remains one of the most consistent electro producers in the business. The genius of "Tales From The Dark Reef" lies in the long-serving producer's ability to craft shimmering, sci-fi focused electronic music that takes the aesthetic appeal of the best electro records - the intergalactic aural textures, sci-fi intent, skittish rhythms and futuristic synthesizer sounds - and applies them to a variety of Detroit and Chicago-influenced grooves and soundscapes.
