Last Night (3:18)
Don't Break Your Promises (3:11)
Review: This is one of those raw soul sounds that never goes out of fashion, and thankfully neither does it often disappear from availability. It features two r&b classics, the dancefloor-ready 'Last Night' and the soulful 'Don't Break Your Promises', both originally released on the Rainbow label in the UK and a long-time bastion of Aitken's mastery of blending Jamaican and British influences. The opener draws from The Mar-Keys and Georgie Fame, showcasing r&b's imprint on Aitken's style. 'Don't Break Your Promises' is a Milson Luce cover that gained fame in Jamaica before inspiring numerous versions.

Windows Of My Mind (5:09)
Windows Of My Mind (remix) (4:56)
Review: The story of this one revolves around San Diego native Anthony "Antone" Williams. He was one day alone in a studio, messing about with the gear and before he knew he it lay down the haunting rhythm that underpins the tune now presented here by the good folks at Athens of the North. It's a sinister, restless one that got released as a hugely limited 7" on Unity Records with otherworldly soul production and a pained vocal up top. Post punk soul, some call it, and that's a fitting descriptor. A remix appears on the flip but the allure of the original is hard to beat.

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (Flying Fish dub) (2:58)
Review: This one got a special Japanese Edition reissue in Spring last year but is such an in-demand delight that now comes other pressing. It finds Betty Black serving up her own sublime cover of Eurythmics' mega hit 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. She is a modern-day soul diva who used to vocalise UK garage tunes and now shows another side to her bow. She is backed up by The Family Fortune and adds plenty of 60s sass to the original which as well as including the full vocal version on the A-side, also has a more dubbed-out edit on the B-side.

Conjunto Raza - "African Dream" (3:15)
The Scepters - "Message" (3:50)
Review: The Scepters, formed in 1967 in Paraiso by guitarist Celso Spencer, were a popular Panamanian band known for their energetic performances across military bases and high school dances in the Canal Zone. Alongside Lionel Best and Jose James, they covered Top 40 hits and iconic rock bands like Santana and Jimi Hendrix. They released two 45s, including 'Message,' which debuted at Panama's first National Soul Music Festival in 1971 and features next here to a jam from Conjunto Raza, another project led by Agustin Leiro, this one with rotating musicians. They released a single 45 on Onda Nueva in the mid-70s and it blends Zonian and Panamanian talent with aplomb.

Good Good Good (instrumental) (3:10)
Review: Michelle David's first UK single 'Yes I Am' was a huge soul hit for the One World Records label back in January. Now she follows it up with another superb single that is so good they named it thrice. 'Good Good Good' is a high speed soul banger with Northern Soul elegance swirling around a tight rhythm section and 60s motifs. The vocal is skill controlled despite the heights it reaches and speed it comes at. Craig Charles has already been dropping this one, and for those who prefer it more straight up, the flip side has an instrumental version.

No Surprise (3:52)
Review: Deep into his chamber-lurking follow-up Wu odyssey, Leon Michels stumbled upon shy New York twosome The Shacks and convinced them to record this hazy summer-primed 45". Singer Shannon steals the show with softness and honesty as the band weave a psychedelic bed of sliding guitars and faraway harmonies. Both laced with a woozy 60s edge and beautifully playful lyrics, the whole EP sparkles with soul and talent from both The Shacks and Leon's ever-reliable troupe.

The Sheiks - "Baghdad Rock"
Review: Destination swinging 50s for two Eastern flavoured rock n'roll/jazz instrumentals. Ray Ellis is most famed for his work on film and with Billy Holiday but here he's composed a superb blues-based jam with ardent muted horns and some of the funkiest organ action you'll hear all week. Meanwhile on the B we find The Sheiks delivering a dusty slab of horn based rock n'rolla complete with a big swing and major calls to dancefloor action. Sheik, rattle and roll, baby!

The KVB - "I Call First" (4:26)
The KVB - "Outlines" (3:06)
Review: New York's Felte label is famed around our parts for knowing how to put together a collaborative EP, but this latest joining of forces from the Flaamingos and The KVB is simply right on the money! The former are a household band who have appeared repeatedly on the label, an outfit who share a post-punk sensibility, while the latter are a Berlin-based duo who indulge in dark and brooding club music that's strangely free of any genre tags. The A-side features three tracks from the band, where the wonderful "Naomi" steals the limelight thanks to its melancholic mood and driving percussive beats, while the flip contains three slabs of moodier, vocal-filtered electronica; our pick has to be "Still Warm" for its early eighties Mancunian edge. Deep and mesmerising!

Before Your Eyes
Velo
Review: It's the tag team to end all tag teams... Friendly Fires and the Asphodells pairing of Andrew Weatherall and Timothy J Fairplay have combined with one simple mission: make music that take both parties out of their familiar pastures. The result is this stunning slice of dreamy Balearic indie. "Before Your Eyes" is awash with psychedelic textures, covering Ed Macfarlane's vocals like a cosy 50 tog duvet. "Velo", meanwhile, is a nagging instrumental that drives with a mathematical magic yet steers with a dreamy, surf rock mentality. The debut on Macfarlane's Telophase imprint, everything about this 12" is special. Let's hope there's more from this premiership tag team in the near future.

Not My Boy (3:30)
Review: Billy Gee & Whole Shabang's 'I'll Stop At Nothing' originally came on the Perfect Toy label back in May 2019, before we had ever heard of the word 'covid.' Mad huh. Anyway, it now gets pressed up to this tidy 7" and cannot fail to get you in a spin. The driving four four dumps and backed by supersized horns and impassioned male vocals with more than a little fancy flutter in the delivery. On the flip is something quite different - 'Not My Boy' lows right down and sinks into a more intimate American-slash-western sound with noodling horns and bass.

Review:  J-Walk is back after the success of his recent long player Meditteranea Winds. The time the beat maker once again shows off his more than solid production credentials with a mega limited edition cut with outer space jazz vibes. It has soft same drums and lush cosmic chords that sink you in deep. On the reverse is the The Hi Fires with 'La Bas' which is a darker, heavier take on jazzed up beats with oodles of reverb, expressive sax solos and moody bass. It makes for a 7" with two very different but just as powerful sounds.

Review: Soul Flip are the label completely upending our idea of what 'edits' are. Rather than putting 4x4 kicks on disco classics or reinventing funk instrumentals from the ground up, take this treatment of The Jam: 'A Solid Bond In Your Heart' gets a nice glassy flip-up, with sunny rhythm guitar and handclaps backending a song we never knew had the potential to become soul music in the first place. An equal treatment is given to The Capitols' 'Cool Jerk'.

Originally recorded for radio and left in storage, these Latin psych funk bombs capture the underground spirit of Panama's vibrant music scene from more than 50 years ago. Russell Evans & The Nite Hawks - "The Bold" (2:21)
Review: Cliff Nobles's northern soul gem 'My Love Is Getting Stronger' is a vital part of the cannon that gets a welcome reissue here by the good folk at Matasuna. It is an empowering tune with some hugely impressive drumming, plenty of big horns and a big bongo bridge that builds the vibe. ON the flip side is an equally essential but rather different tune, 'The Bold.' It is a funky, jazz tinged workout with cosmic chords and more exceptional stick work. Both tracks were initially released in 1966 on Atlantic Records but have since become hard to source. Do not sleep.

QX-1 - "I Won't Hurt You"
The Freeze - "Psychodalek Nightmares"

Angel Corpus Christi - "Dream Baby Dream"
Review: To complement Dark Was The Night, the latest excellent commercial mix of Optimo's storied discography, Mule Musiq have pulled four considered highlights from the CD for this 12" sampler. Listening to the four tracks featured here in isolation from Dark Was The Night only magnifies what accomplished DJs JD Twitch and JG Wilkes are, and highlights their digging skills with the period in which the music originally surfaced covering the late seventies and very early 90s. "I Won't Hurt You" from QX-1 is sleazy, suggestive deep house from the early 90s that will appeal to fans of same era K Alexi Shelby, whilst "Psychodalek Nightmares" is a killer new wave from The Freeze. Odori's "Number One" is super rare deep house from '91 with a killer S&M drum snap and a surfeit of new age samples whilst "Dream Baby Dream" from Angel Corpus Christi has last track written indelibly into it's DNA - no surprise then that it closes the mix!

The Scott Brothers - "My Sweet Polly" (2:44)
Judson Moore & The Al Tog Staff - "Everybody Push & Pull" (3:11)
Review: Soul Junction revisits the Scot-Tees Capri master tapes here to unveil two previously unreleased tracks. First is 'My Sweet Polly' by The Scott Brothers, a late 60s dance tune inspired by Howard Scott's former girlfriend. Coupled with this is a studio version of Judson Moore's "Everybody Push & Pull," a crossover hit influenced by Rufus Thomas. The Scott Brothers evolved from the 'Elpeccios' in 1958 to the Scott Brothers Band in 1963 and were instrumental in Chicago's music scene. Their label, Capri Records, produced hits like 'We Like Girls' and worked with legends like Garland Green. Judson Moore was a veteran singer who thrived under their mentorship and went on to leave a lasting legacy.

Sonic Youth - "Personality Crisis" (3:42)
The Pastels - "Lonely Planet Boy" (4:15)
Review: RECOMMENDED
While New York Dolls are widely considered one of the earliest names on the Big Apple punk scene, revisiting tracks like 'Personality Crisis' proves just how much change took place between 1973 and the later years in the decade. The original version is rooted in a traditional barroom rock 'n' roll aesthetic which, at the time, would definitely not have sounded so traditional.

Breaking from this, dons of wall-of-sound stuff Sonic Youth opted for a lo-fi garage-y interpretation that successfully breathed new life into the song when this interpretation landed in 1993. Flip it to find 'Lonely Planet Boy', which back in the 70s was a piano and guitar workout defined by a somewhat laidback vocal delivery. A wonderful contrast to the A, in 1987 The Pastels offered up a much bigger take on said track that still retained the original's air of cool. Proof, if it were needed, that great music evolves in the right hands.

Review: We love Talking Drums. At the core, they are simply our type of band. An album, a few EPs, and then disappear before the scene kicks off and becomes commercialized. Boxes all well and truly ticked. The early 80s were a period of change what with punk music evolving into post-punk, and while the nu-romantic fashion that came to prominence in the mid 80s was a national movement, it was bands like Talking Drums which initiated it. Thanks to the ever-reliable Dark Entries, we now get to enjoy their best single, Courage, in all its glory - and it sounds like it's been pressed up properly, too! All you need to know at this point, if you haven't come across this already, is that it's one of the best disco-not-disco singles you'll ever cop...and we don't have a favourite tune...they're all equally raw, drum-heavy, house-envisioning, and utterly addictive. Hotly tipped!

Elephant (Canyons Wooly Mammoth extension)
Elephant (Todd Rundgren remix)
Review: Australian act Tame Impala nailed their hazy, scuzzed out, psychedelic sound so succinctly on debut album Innerspeaker, the worry must be how they look to match or expand on it with the forthcoming new set Lonerism. On the basis of lead track "Elephant", their sound's development seems subtle in places and epic in others, with a richer texture at play throughout the stomping, woozy psyche rock groove and a wonderful organ lead deviation midway through which presumably is all the more intoxicating played live. The band have truly excelled in who they elect to rework "Elephant" too, with both old chums Canyons and the iconic Todd Rundgren offering distinct yet complementary revisions. The deliciously named "Woolly Mammoth Extension" from Canyons rewires the grubby analogue undercurrent to a cosmic groove that approaches infinity whilst acquiring near defeaning levels of reverb before dropping into the full vocal. Rundgren meanwhile adopts a more expansive opening before launching into a veritable juggernaut of heavily phased psychedelia that adopts the mantra "it's a journey, man" fully.

Often times that is down to the smart digging of the owners who unearth plenty of treasures for reissuing but this time out it is a new record from a contemporary outfit, TAMTAM. The four piece band formed in Tokyo and started making reggae and dub before moving on to jazz, soul, new age and psych-pop. They bring subtle euphoria to what they do as well as catchy grooves and nostalgic melodies as exemplified here on this mature new work that will be lapped up by fans of Khruangbin.

Review: These two Mirwood classics are well-known and well-loved so don't need much hype, but having both tracks on the same 45 is a true treat. 'That Beatin' Rhythm' epitomises the Northern Soul dance scene and is still drawing dancers to the floor all these years on. The instrumental flip is credited to the singer of the A-side and was also hugely popular back in the day but has received less attention in recent years with the vocal version dominating DJ spins. This pairing is a potent one that still very much gets us up and going.

Of course, just because something is rare and expensive doesn't make it good, but Jimmy Thomas's 1969 cut 'Springtime' is genuinely brilliant. Released when funk-rock was arguably at its height, it sees the legendary soul man belting out Alan de Roches' lyrics over a Hammond-heavy fusion of soul, funk and Hendrix-style heavy rock. This time round, it comes backed with a relatively hard to find - on vinyl, at least- chunk of reggae/soul/rhythm & blues from iconic Jamaican singer Owen Grey. It's superb, of course, but we still prefer the incendiary A-side.

See My Girls (Le Chien version) (5:34)
Review: If Tindersticks' album, "No Treasure But Hope", represents the band embracing all their chamber pop sensibilities, delivering something that has plenty of operatic beauty and camp accessibility, "See My Girl", an EP which owes its title track to that LP, is something of a counterweight. Sort of.

Aside from the one piece taken from said record, here we're given something that's far more expansive and much less interested in genre lines. "A Street Walker's Carol" could well soundtrack some 1970s New Hollywood road movie. The aptly-titled "Blood & Bone", featuring Sidonie Osborne-Staples, invokes the most distorted of electro-rock tomes. Le Chien's re-rub of the titular adds pop-roots-reggae nuances into the equation. Consider this a curveball warning if "No Treasure", their 11th studio album, was your first experience of this incredibly fluid and varied band.

Fronted by Smith & Mudd vocalist Huw Costin, Torn Sail go all 60s West Coast rock on us with the gloriously rich sounds of "Birds". From its acoustic beginnings the track gradually unfurls into a delightful groove embellished by soothing vocal harmonies. It's almost a thankless task enlisting anyone to try and remix what sounds like a perfect song, but Claremont 56 obviously chose right in requesting the services of Tiago. In the Portuguese producer's hands "Birds" is transformed into a heavily psychedelic freakout which gently develops into a kraut rock behemoth filled with swathes of heavy organ vibes. Containing several shifts in momentum - including a glorious half speed finish - this is a truly stunning remix which left our jaws occupying the floor!

Review: For the uninitiated, South Coast act Toy surfaced from the dying embers of the massively hyped but never really justified Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong, shorn of the slightly annoying front man and demonstrating an all new direction that veered through psychedelic and cosmiche sounds without losing sight of those catchy hooks. Ahead of Toy's much anticipated eponymous debut album, Heavenly elect to pluck "Dead & Gone" out as the appetite whetting lead single while making the not difficult but still very smart decision to enlist Mr Andrew Weatherall to remix the track. Weatherall's been doing remixes since before Toy were in diapers and he's still got that innate ability to stamp whatever stylistic mood he is in all over a track - in this case it's heavily dubbed death disco which inverts the guitar led drive of Toy's original production gloriously.

This eminently collectable three track release for Belgian imprint Sleeperhold will no doubt jostle for first place with that wonderfully atmospheric 12" on Mannequin and split HTRK release on Ghostly for best Tropic Of Cancer release of 2012. It's "Children Of A Lesser God", the final exquisite track that will floor most people, capturing Camella Lobo and company at their most powerful. Review: Juan Mendez, a key part of the cultish techno crew Sandwell District under his Silent Servant alias, continues his voracious appetite for musical surprise with the second Tropic Of Cancer release in collaboration with Camella Lobo. Again released via the Downwards imprint, "Be Brave" stands alongside early Factory Floor releases in ploughing a droney, minimalist, synth wave sound. It would be easy to draw comparisons with the likes of Joy Division, but "Be Brave" retains its own contemporary identity, not least the dead eyed sonic menace that drapes over your senses as the track progresses. Strengthening the bridge between the past and present, Downwards have scored a real coup in securing a remix of the track from Cabaret Voltaire's Richard H Kirk, who lifts the track out of the mist of sonic depravity somewhat and twists it into a relentless, ever building industrial groove. Luxuriously presented on a clear ten inch and housed in a sumptuous sleeve, this is an eminently collectable record that rightfully won't last very long on the shelves.

Dive (Wheel Of The Law)
Review: The Sorrow Of Two Blooms sees Tropic Of Cancer's Camella Lobo and Juan Mendez excel, ploughing further into the sonic mists, though there's a certain spectral delight to how the opening track unfolds, with Lobo's voice drenched beneath the reverberant drone but clinging to foggy strings that embellish the track with a certain degree of light. The languid thump of "Temporal Vassels" lays Lobo's vocals so deep in the mix you are worried she's trapped down a well whilst "Dive (Wheel Of The Law)" is perhaps Tropic Of Cancer at their mystifying, bewitchingly hypnotic best. Spread across the B Side, it comes cloaked in viscous fuzz, Lobo's yearning yet indecipherable vocals seemingly glued to the pensive guitar lines. The result is utterly captivating. The point where people discuss the merits of Tropic Of Cancer without feeling the need to mention the disparate relationship of their sound with Mendez's Silent Servant endeavours should be arriving sooner rather than later on the evidence of this release.

The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Cocktail De Medianoche" (2:43)
Review: Due to persistent demand and soaring prices for the original pressing, this reissue of 'Why Don't You Go Home' on striking red transparent vinyl could not be more essential. Featuring the dynamic vocals of Diane Ward, the title track delivers a powerhouse performance echoing the King and Federal r&b sound. On the flip side, 'Cocktail De Medianoche' serves up a delightful blend of Boogaloo and Northern Soul, a cherished favourite among aficionados of Latin grooves and Uptempo Soul. With two phenomenal tracks, this reissue promises a perfect double-sider experience! for lovers of soul.

Review: Meticulously produced and polished to cosmic perfection, Kirk Degiorgio's live outfit have excelled any expectations they set way back in 2006 with their eponymous debut. Co-created with Dutch jazz specialists the Metropole Orchestra, each soft-but-complex track sparkles with dreamy sheen that's not dissimilar to early Soundgarden or Patrick Watson or, at points, the Bee Gees. Add a little Jim Noir or Hot Chip and it's the perfect blend of rock, classical musicianship and contemporary electronic production.

Review: This recording of the Philadelphia Orchestra performing Sergei Prokofiev's 1936 story and orchestral score Peter and the Wolf was recorded in 1977 and was originally released in 1978. The role of the narrator on the recording was initially offered to both Peter Ustinov and Alec Guinness who both turned it down, before David Bowie agreed to take on the role, supposedly as a Christmas present to his son. On the B-side is another equally as charming piece of recent classical history, Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra as narrated by Hugh Downs.

Review: It's hard not to see this offering from hallucinogenic and highly visual psych-rockers The Flaming Lips as a "here's what you could have won" release. And that's "here's what you could have won had you been able to attend this performance of one of our most treasured albums in one of the world's most aesthetically astounding venues". FOMO abounds, Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a proper bucket list muso haunt, setting gigs halfway up a Colorado mountain. Throw in live orchestra, the Colorado Symphony, and you've got yourself a truly life-affirming evening. Even on record, there's a tangible difference between the sonics here and the original, still it's an incredibly beautiful and grand album. Perhaps most pronounced during the heart-rendering string sweep of opener "Race For The Prize" (expect shivers), tracks such as "A Spoonful Weighs A Ton" and, of course, "Waitin' For A Superman" feel as though they have finally found their home.

Review: Shoegaze and krautrock project from Guadalajara, Mexico, Lorelle Meets The Obsolete, delivers the collaboration's first album since 2016. De Facto presents a fourth studio LP overall which sees them land again on the UK-based Sonic Cathedral Recordings. As you can imagine the album tempts its listener through a lo-fi world of haze and distortion but also sweetness with a touch of grunge. Highlights include end of the world epics like "Accion - Vaciar" to the icy waves of noise in "El Derrumbe", matched furthermore, yet brighter, in the 10-minute closer, "La Maga".

Review: The glorious Athens of the North label will always be one of our favourites. It is pretty much buy on sight for lovers of soul, funk and disco and this month it is serving up two more unmissable long players. Here it is Ike and The Uptights and their superb sounds which make, what me might bravely, say, could be one of this always high class label's finest releases. Formed by Henry Bradley in Forrest City, The Uptights recorded for Memphis label Action Records and here we get a perfect window into their world of raw and guttural funk.

Review: Talk Talk are true totems of the British synth-pop tradition, and they certainly took an interesting path into experimental realms from the midpoint of their career, but it all began right here. The Party's Over is grandiose in all the best ways, capturing an era of exquisite songwriting which was groundbreaking and traditionally rooted at the same time. Like ABC, Talk Talk knew how to deliver bombast and sentimentality without losing the depth of their work, and now, 40 years on, this spectacular album is being given a reissue on white vinyl.

An exceptional recording, it highlights the depth and intensity of a group at a pivotal moment.

Review: Remember the first time you heard the trippy spiralled chords of 'It's Not meant To Be'? So far as opening tracks on an album go, it's up there with some of this century's best, gradually expanding into a kaleidoscope of harmonies before the strange, glassy-eyed voice of Kevin Parker glides in on a cloud. As defining of a particularly hazy period in indie as it is rooted in the aural legacy of 1960s counterculture, in the roaring 2020s it's feels like a wonderfully welcome, decidedly escapist listen.

Of course we probably don't need to tell many people that - Innerspeaker was a certifiable gold record that catapulted Parker to global stardom while still standing out as a work of great vision and artistic credibility. Yes, it owes much to the jangle and psychedelia of rock 'n' roll during the Swinging years, but it doesn't take long to realise how much else is happening here.

Review: When Scottish alternative rock heroes Teenage Fanclub first dropped this, their third full length outing, it was something of a milestone. Arriving via the world famous and universally (well, we think so anyway) revered label Creation Records certainly never does anyone any harm, but in this case all the stars aligned in such way to offer the band what every British guitar act aims for - US success.

American tastemaker title Spin magazine even crowned it Album of the Year for 1991, a sure sign of its impact over the other side of the Atlantic. Whether you'd agree with that accolade or not, it's a classic example of jangle-noise-power pop indie that really helped define what those words actually mean for at least two generations to come. A landmark release.
