Review: Demon Records have embarked on a project to put out four new vinyl reissues from Mark E. Smith and his cult band The Fall. The Infotainment Scan album landed back in 1993 on Permanent Records and went on to be the outfit's highest charting work, entering the UK charts at a frankly unbelievable #9. That said, it is the most accessible of all their records with its cover of Sister Sledge's 'Lost in Music' as well as tunes like 'Paranoia Man in Cheap Sh*t Room' and 'Glam Racket'. This is the first time it has been on wax in almost three decades.

Review: You have to hand it to Japan - the English new wave band, not the country. Despite only having released two (admittedly very successful) albums before 1979's Quiet Life, the group really knew what they wanted by this point. So much so they enlisted the legendary disco creator Giorgio Moroder to produce standalone single 'Life In Toyko', setting out a new stylistic blueprint moving from glam rock to synth, only to drop the revered producer before hitting the studio to make this record.

In the end that duty fell on Paul Hunter (Roxy Music, Slade) and Simon Robert Napier-Bell (Ultravox, Marc Bolan), and the result was a Gold record selling well over 100,000 copies upon release. Now forming the centrepiece for this epic special edition box set, which boasts a host of remixes, live versions and Moroder's take on 'Life In Tokyo', you'd be crazy to miss out.

Review: Spike Jonze's Her is, quite frankly, one of the most profoundly moving movies of the last decade. Posing the question we should all be asking - what happens when people, in this case a writer who is paid to pen personal letters from clients to their loved ones, start falling in love with their computer operating systems? The answer is an existential journey through the greatest unanswerable quandaries of all time; what makes us human? At what point do we become conscious? How long until Siri becomes truly useful?

The soundtrack probably didn't stand out to as many people as the plot and the cinematography, but as this hugely accomplished album version proves, Arcade Fire and Owen Pallet did an incredible job with creating an original score of music that lives up to the ambition of the film - through soft piano sonatas, spiralling synthesised crescendos, and achingly beautiful strings you can see the gamut of human emotions.

Review: In indie rock 'n' roll a decade is pretty much an eternity. It's so long, in fact, that music journalists are now writing articles about the fall of bands per se, and the dominance of solo stars in the charts and electronic producers in other areas of contemporary pop culture. So, how does the debut from one of the most hyped indie outfits of the 2010s fare in the post-group world?

The answer, reassuringly, is just fine. Of course the sound of what might happen should The Ramones team up with The Strokes no longer creates that breath-of-fresh-air feeling it did back in 2011, when the release won favour across the press and public boards, simply because we've heard it before. Nevertheless, the ridiculously catchy, upbeat runaway train of riffs offered by tracks like 'If You Wanna', and the sombre, piano-led balladry of 'Somebody Else's Child' will still resonate in a big way.

Review: Billy Nomates is coming off the back of a hugely acclaimed album in 2002. That was the self titled work on Invada Records and now she follows it up with a new EP that has already had heavy plays on BBC 6Music. Billy even stepped in for Iggy Pop on his show and impressed with her selections. Here the artist develops her unique sound and unflinching lyrics and says of the music that it is "predominantly about communication breakdowns; personally, mentally, physically. A strange thing to happen while communication has never had so many channels. Perhaps we need a direct line."

Finally Jane Weaver is getting to make the album she has always wanted. Or one of the albums she has always wanted to make. That's the party line behind Flock. And while the idea of a bastion of experimental, avant-garde, leftfield, psychedelic electronica secretly longing to put out a record that is nothing-but-nothing-but accessible pop music might surprise some, who the hell are we to question the inner workings of a genius?

Naturally, considering Weaver's reputation for turning everything into works of art, she approaches the challenge with resolute commitment, and pulls it off with aplomb. Understandably moving away from regular label haunt Finders Keepers, the Manchester imprint primarily concerned with unearthing weirds from the bottom of the forgotten pile, it's a sweet, sexy, easy going thing that simply won't leave you alone.

Review: Here Clutch have managed to give us one of the best covers albums in a year dominated by either covers or live albums. It also contains an incredible version of 'Algo Ha Cambiado', one of the finest from legendary Argentinian blues maestro Norberto Anibal Napolitano (AKA Pappo), who doesn't seem to get the global recognition he deserves. Oh, and the record itself has a great back story.

This is both Clutch at their uncompromising best - paying tribute to their own heavy rock, blues and metal heroes - and most resourceful. Starting to release a series of rare digital covers from the decade-spanning outfit's archives as a means of connecting with fans during the pandemic, Weathermaker Music was soon born and now this is the micro-label's first album. As you would hope, it's sweat-soaked, guttural, rhythmically raw stuff, so best make some space for a dancefloor before putting it on.

Review: John Frusciante's solo work has a hugely devoted and hardcore fan base who never fail to snap it up, and then again when it gets reissued. That was the case with this one first time round and surely will be again, 12 years later. Originals of 2009's 'The Empyrean record often fetch mad prices on the second hand market and this one sure is a winner with contributions from The Smiths' Johnny Marr and Red Hot Chili Peppers bandmate Flea. The sound is, as ever, earnest and emotional, with John's voice often adrift amongst ambient chords one moment and soaring next to huge riffs the next.

Review: Amorphous Androgynous are back with something suitably epic in the form of this symphonic, 40-minute prog space-rock concept album, We Persuade Ourselves We Are Immortal. It is presented as five fantastic parts with the legendary Peter Hammill and Paul Weller both guesting, while the Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and a 25-piece live orchestral string section provide the sumptuous sound that makes this most expansive and borderless record sound so meaningful. A cosmic trip of gigantic proportions with all the ups and downs you need to really feel moved, this is the definition of prog lavishness.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Post punk and dance music can be perfect bedmates simply because they are so often one and the same thing. Or rather the former is a form of the latter, with post punk's audio iconography frequently involving a rolling approach to rhythms, subtleties given room to shine and a sense of constant build about the atmospherics. All of which are also cornerstones of electronic club sounds, too.

Here then Soul Jazz adds to its extensive and consistently-impressive back catalogue of genre-themed compilations with a collection of tracks that take their lead from electro pop, industrial, punk, techno and more. Featuring a host of contemporary artists, including LA DIYers Automatic, German sonic artists Toresch and Philippines-via-California cult hero Vex Ruffin, it's refreshingly modern proof of how vital this stylistic meeting point is.

Review: Remember the first time you heard the trippy spiralled chords of 'It's Not meant To Be'? So far as opening tracks on an album go, it's up there with some of this century's best, gradually expanding into a kaleidoscope of harmonies before the strange, glassy-eyed voice of Kevin Parker glides in on a cloud. As defining of a particularly hazy period in indie as it is rooted in the aural legacy of 1960s counterculture, in the roaring 2020s it's feels like a wonderfully welcome, decidedly escapist listen.

Of course we probably don't need to tell many people that - Innerspeaker was a certifiable gold record that catapulted Parker to global stardom while still standing out as a work of great vision and artistic credibility. Yes, it owes much to the jangle and psychedelia of rock 'n' roll during the Swinging years, but it doesn't take long to realise how much else is happening here.

Often the most apt quotes come from unexpected places. The Great Spans of Muddy Time isn't just a great album title, it's reference to depression, originating from TV gardening legend Monty Don. It has now been re-used for the name of William Doyle's latest album in his post-East India Youth years, which have thus far been marked by a series of blissful instrumental LPs and the excellent, song-focussed Your Wilderness Revisited in 2017.

Things look to combine both here, with The Great Spans of Muddy Time an exceptional example of lo-fi folk-electronica, at times epic and monumental - huge, expansive synth builds - in other moods there's a Casiotone for the Painfully Alone quality to the more rhythmic tracks. An accomplished addition to an already exceptional oeuvre.

Review: Last year, post-rock heroes Arab Strap announced their return via the release of a string of archive live albums and a collection of mid-1990s demos. Now they've gone one better and delivered their first new studio album since 2005, As Days Get Dark. The essential ingredients that made the Falkirk duo such an attractive proposition - Aidan Moffat's poetic, kitchen-sink-drama lyrics, delivered in a thick Scottish Burr, and multi-instrumentalist Malcom Middleton's distinctively lo-fi backing tracks- are once again the bedrock of the album, though this time the music is perhaps a little more densely layered and - whisper it quietly -surprisingly polished. One esteemed music publication described the album as a "career highlight', and it's hard to disagree.
