Sanctify (7" Nachpressung)
Cat: LTR 001. Rel: 18 Dec 20
  1. Sanctify (4:03)
  2. Sanctify (T Groove Smooth mix) (4:14)
Review: Love Touch Records has a devilishly simple game plan: to release brand-new revivalist boogie, electrofunk and synth-powered soul songs on seven-inch singles. Here, the label's very first release from late 2019- which, incredibly, sold out simply through social media hype - finally gets a wider release. It's well worth checking, because it's a terrific slab of smooth, spacey, talk box-sporting slab of synth-soul from vocalist Amalia, label regulars The Precious Lo's and modern boogie wizard Brian Ellis, who provides a killer synth solo rich in wavy, LFO-trigger action. Over on the flip T-Groove provides a "Smooth Mix" - a more thickset take built around warm chords and one of the most squelchy synthesizer basslines we've ever hard.

Cat: PH 45021. Rel: 16 May 19
  1. This Is Bolga! (part 1) (3:35)
  2. This Is Bolga! (part 2) (3:53)
Review: German-Ghanaian group the Polyversal Souls have previously collaborated with a number of bands and solo artists from West Africa, so this hook-up with Northern Ghanaian outfit the Bolga All Stars - a collective made up of leading local kologo and frafra-gospel singers and musicians - should not come as much of a surprise. Separated into two parts for the seven-inch release, the track blends the Polyversal Souls' lolloping, late '60s style Afro-funk grooves - complete with fuzzy, period style production - and sharp horn section with glistening guitars, snaking solos and fine vocals from the Bolga All Stars. It's one of the Polyversal Souls' finest releases yet, and that's saying something.

Peas In An Alternate Universe
Cat: JB45 001. Rel: 07 Dec 20
  1. Jorun Bombay & The Espressolites - "Peas In An Alternate Universe" (4:22)
  2. Jorun Bombay - "Mister Magic" (A Jorun Bombay edit - alternate version) (3:19)
Review: When it comes to delivering party-starting funk and soul 45s, Jorun Bombay has an impressive track record. His latest seven-inch is rather fine, too. On the A-side he joins forces with a trio of musicians to offer up "Peas In An Alternate Universe": a riff on JBs classic "Pass The Peas" that layers extended organ and trombone solos over a groove dominated by crunchy breakbeats and virtuoso bass guitar. Flipside "Mister Magic" is a deeper, warmer and more laidback affair, with tidy electric piano parts, toe-tapping drums, occasional string-laden disco samples and warm bass being joined by a simply wonderful new vibraphone solo.

Funky President (reissue) (7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: BAB 004. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. James Brown - "Funky President" (extended breaks special edition) (4:25)
  2. The Vibrettes - "Humpty Dump" (part 1 - extended breaks special edition) (3:16)
Review: New 7" label Beats & Breaks present "Funky President" which is a funk song originally released as a single in 1974, by the hardest working man in show business at the time - the Godfather of Soul - James Brown. It appeared on his 4nd (!) album entitled 'Reality' released that same year. According to Brown, the song's title referred to U.S. President Gerald Ford - who succeeded Richard Nixon in the White House shortly before it was recorded. It is one of Brown's most frequently sampled recordings. The rhythmic portions of the song have been used on dozens of hip hop tracks. On the flip, The Vibrettes' "Humpty Dump" is another killer funk number that was recorded by one Roscoe Porter and originally released by Lujon back in 1973. The sample source for many a respected beat by such legends as J. Dilla, Four Tet, 2 Bad Mice and even Aphex Twin.

I'm In Love (parts 1 & 2) (instrumental)
  1. I'm In Love (part 1 - instrumental)
  2. I'm In Love (part 2 - instrumental)
Review: A lovely new 45 from Detroit funk/hip-hop label Funk Night Records .Rickey Calloway started his music career at the tender age of 13, clowning around in rest periods doing James Brown imitations. It's with the spirit of Brown's backing band The JB's that the Daptone label's house band, The Dap Kings, turn Rickey's vocal track original into a groove led funk set of instrumentals. This version is heavy on the guitar licks with smatterings of bongo percussion, smouldering Hammond organ and punchy brass stabs without the confines of vocals. Highly recommended.

Lost Soul Part 1 & 2
Cat: DINK 012. Rel: 06 Jan 20
  1. Lost Soul (part 1) (4:13)
  2. Lost Soul (part 2) (3:50)
Review: DJ DSK has released some heavyweight seven-inch singles over the years, with his 2016 45 "Laminate" - an original slab of funk made in cahoots with the previously unheralded "Lost Soul Collective". Here he gathers together the band once more for a follow-up four years in the making. "Lost Soul" is a two-part affair in keeping with the funk tradition. The A-side is an infectious vocal number that sits somewhere between Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and the more psychedelic flavour associated with turn-of-the-70s San Francisco soul. As you'd expect, the flipside "Part 2" version strips out most of the vocals to allow the band's warm and heady instrumentation room to breathe.

More Sex Cream (Crooklyn Style) (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: SSR 220. Rel: 24 Aug 20
  1. James Brown & The Crooklyn Dodgers - "More Sex Cream" (Crooklyn Style) (3:44)
  2. James Brown - "More Sex Cream" (instrumental mix) (3:44)
Review: Earlier this summer, mash-up maestro DJ Soopasoul raised our temperatures by layering Wu-Tang Clan vocals over a chunky, funk-fuelled backing track crafted from snippets of James Brown jams. He called it "Sex Cream", and now he's back with more sickly-sweet goodness based around the down-low greatness of the Godfather of Soul. A-side "More Sex Cream (Crooklyn Style)" delivers a similar-sounding JB-inspired beat, this time peppered with rhymes from "Crooklyn". It works wonderfully, of course, as does the flipside instrumental version. Bare party-starting fun for funk-loving hip-hop heads!

  1. The Family Daptone - "Hey Brother (Do Unto Others)" (3:52)
  2. Soul Fugue - "The 100 Knights Orchestra" (4:58)
Review: Soul and funk heads won't want to miss this very special seven-inch from the Daptone Records crew, and not just because it's the label's 100th "45". The A-side features an all-star '60s soul cover of the Frightnrs rock-steady cut featuring vocal contributions from Saun and Starr, James Hunter, Lee Fields, Naomi Shelton, Duke Amayo, the Frightnrs and two legends who are no longer with us: Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones. It's a one-off that won't be repeated for obvious reasons, but more importantly it's very, very good. Over on the flip main man Bosco Mann takes charge, conducting and producing "two opposing armies" of woodwind and horn players from the label's expansive musical roster. As you'd expect, it's something of an epic.

Soul Flip Edits Volume 10
  1. Ella Fitzgerald - "Get Ready" (Soul Flip edit) (3:53)
  2. Tammi Terrell - "Two Can Have A Party" (Soul Flip edit) (3:44)
Review: The Soul Flip crew are back to rework and carefully tweak more classic cuts to get those dance floors in a spin. This time they turn their attention to the evergreen classic "Get Ready" from jazz great Ella Fitzgerald. The already student and empowering single is beefed up with drums that have extra kick, crisp hits and fills and string stabs that are as bright as the sun. Things get a little more soulful and sun kissed with Tammi Terrell - "Two Can Have A Party" and its hip swinging finger clicks and gorgeously soaring strings.

The Scorpio Walk
  1. The Scorpio Walk (4:54)
  2. Message Of Love (4:01)
Review: Finnish revivalist funk combo the Soul Investigators are no strangers to collaboration, having previously provided backing for Nicole Willis, Myron and Ernie Hawks. Here, they once again join forces with the latter for two more chunks of instrumental funk and soul goodness. A-side "Scorpio Walk" is the kind of cut that should come with its own named dance; a shuffling, mid-tempo funk affair that layers Spaghetti Western guitar solos and fluttering flute lines over a backing track rich in flanged guitar licks, bustling bass guitar and on-point drum breaks. Flipside "Message of Love" is an altogether deeper and more dewy-eyed affair, with woozy backing vocals and electric piano solos rising above a shuffling groove.

Laying down a spiritual arrangement so frenetic and full of its own life it takes up two parts, Idris's sax plays duet with Philophon's own vocalist Guy One. 1. Save Me (4:16)
  2. El Chicken (2:32)
Review: Henry Stone's cult Cat label did some serious work carrying funk, soul and more from it's homebase in Miami throughout the 70s. There were bigger artists like Gwen McRae on the label, but also plenty of space for some short lived and distinctly DIY outfits like James Knight & The Butlers. Their run was right around the start of Cat in 1971, yielding an album and a clutch of singles, the last of which came out in 1972. "Save Me" is more than deserving of a new pressing - it's an instantly addictive, psych-soaked joyful noise, recorded with an in-the-room rawness that only adds to the deft songwriting and accomplished players, making for an overdriven and utterly uplifting gem. Don't overlook the sly trippiness of instrumental track "El Chicken" too with it's smart reverse guitar effects in the breakdown.

Review: Joe Baer Magnant and The Ready bring that sweet sweet soul sound to Funk Night for a tasty 7" packed with good time grooves and a lil dose of the blues. Magnant is an accomplished guitarist who's been striking out on his own more recently, and his chops are in full effect on the heavy-grooving "Honey Stung". There are serious amounts of funk in those drums, and some punch in the brass section, but really this one belongs to Magnant's expressive playing. He's equally compelling on the B-side, which houses more downbeat cut "Orozco's Guarantee".

  1. The Mohawks - "The Champ" (Reggae version) (3:13)
  2. The Marvels - "Rock Steady" (3:06)
Review: If you dig hip-hop, funk or soul, you should know 'The Champ', a much-sampled, Hammond-heavy 1968 rhythm & blues workout from Alan Hawkshaw's Mohawks outfit. However, you may not know this version: a 1973 reggae remake from the band that brilliantly slows down the main organ motif and places it atop a sturdy, bass-heavy rhythm. This time round, it comes backed with another killer reggae rework: a skanking take on Aretha Franklin soul classic 'Rock Steady' from the Marvels. Recorded and released in the UK by a group of exiled Jamaicans in the early 1970s, it remains an inspired example of reggae's 'versioning' culture.

Review: Edits in the hole! Two Afrofunk gems enjoy floor-primed refocuses: Steve Monite's Doing It In Lagos-featured "Only You" gets a little juice from Sofrito's Frankie Francis who really brings the bass out in proceedings. Meanwhile on the B Nick The Record and Idjut Boy Dan Tyler tweak the energy and sheen of Tabu Ley Rochereau's "Hafi Disco" as the drums are given a little more momentum and the chorus and horns are really brought to the centre of the action. Review: Super Spicy is a new Mexican label committing some serious heaters to wax. Helmed by Monsieur Von Pratt, the label boss himself sets the tone with opening track 'Forever Funk' on this various artists 12". The vibe is clear from the outset - classic disco-flavoured house music with oodles of soul and good vibes by the bucketload. Igor Gonya & Crack D get busy with the filters on 'Two-Piece Orchestra' and The Funk District take a more delicate edit approach to stomping peak-time burner 'Watcha Gonna Do'. This 7" is an album sampler of Italian library inspired disco-funk that draws on the sound's 70s heyday. It was a shared love of this sound and this period that brought these two artists together having first played together at a gig in Italy in 2017. Having finally got together to record, they have mixed up contemporary analogue inspired arrangements and experimental, joyful, playful sounds that are as good at home as they will be on the 'floor. The album drops next year, and this is a fine taster.

On the A-side he delivers his edit of the pair's full vocal version, where Sato's expressive, impassioned vocals rise above a backing track rich in traditional stringed Japanese instrumentation, wristy funk style breakbeats and what sounds like delay-laden guitars. This genuinely unique musical fusion comes to the forefront on the flipside instrumental edit. It's worth a listen, not least because the fine East-West fusion vibe of Sasaki's arrangement can be savoured in full.

Review: Experienced Japanese singer Anna Soto and jazz-funk multi-instrumentalist Toshiyuki Sasaki have offered up a number of collaborative singles of late, each of which has been given the re-edit treatment by one-man production line Ryuhei The Man. As with the other recent Sato/Sasaki releases he's tweaked, Ryuhei offers up two edits of 'Okuribushi', a bustling affair that combines traditional Japanese vocals and instrumentation (and specifically the sound of the shansin, a three-stringed instrument from Osaka) with driving drums that sit somewhere between celebratory disco and the jazz stylings of Max Roach. The superior version - for us, at least - is the full vocal A-side edit, though some may prefer Ryuhei's instrumental take.

As he did with the pair's three previous collaborative 45s, all of which were released simultaneously this week, experienced re-editor Ryuhei The Man is the, erm, man applying the magic dancefloor touch. On side A, he delivers a vocal edit of 'Hounenbushi', an inventive fusion of traditional-sounding singing, sanshin sounds and loose-limbed but laidback jazz-funk drumming courtesy of Sasaki. The quality of the latter's drumming and Sato's sanshin playing comes through loud and clear on the flipside instrumental edit.

Review: Comet's ongoing "Highlife Re-Edit" series is perfect for those who want a little contemporary pizzazz alongside their Afro-disco grooves and dancefloor-ready highlife classics. Like its predecessor, the series' latest volume boasts cuts from highlife legends Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas. The former's punchy, breezy and trumpet-laden highlife-jazz cut "Peace On Earth" can be found on side A, alongside a dreamy Monsieur Scott version that drags the track further towards leisurely jazz-house territory. The Pat Thomas track showcased on side B is "We Are Coming Home", a righteous highlife/funk fusion effort rich in dense percussion and eyes-closed rock guitar solos. The accompanying 2 Paris Septembre Re-Edit brilliantly re-invents it as a bustling broken beat affair laden in shimmering synths and squelchy electronic bass.

  2. Pat Thomas - "Enye Woa" (LeonxLeon Keyed Up mix) (7:20)
  3. Ebo Taylor - "Atwer Abroba" (8:14)
  4. Ebo Taylor - "Atwer Abroba" (Leo Nanjo remix) (5:03)
Review: Comet's "Disco Highlife" re-edit series continues with an EP that draws together original tracks and reworks from two of the Highlife scene's biggest stars: Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas. The latter can be found on side A, with the tipsy, synth-driven highlife-boogie fusion of "Enye Woa". This is in turn re-edited by LeonxLeon, who has not only extended the original track but also added some superb new spacey synth solos. Turn to the flip for Ebo Taylor's richly percussive, Hammond-laden disco-highlife bubbler "Atwer Abroba" and Leo Nanjo's brilliant remix, which re-imagines the track as a rubbery chunk of Highlife-house drenched in dub delays.
