Check 4 U (3:52)
Check 4 U (Metrodome UK Gee mix) (5:16)
Review: Seminal Manchester street soul from 96; Bovel's "Check 4 U" had anthem status in clubs and on pirates throughout the city at the time but suffered limited pressing and an OG copy has been known to be priced at 2000 quid. Revitalised by Ruf Dug and Bovel herself, it now comes complete with a superb UKG update from Metrodome which maintains the feel of the era but with the pace and punch of the times. Limited to 1000 copies.

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - "I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing" (Soul Flip edit) (3:58)
Sugar Pie Desanto - "Go Go Power" (Soul Flip edit) (4:19)
Review: More cheeky 45 party power from Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo as they hit their third Soul Flip edit release of the year. Martha Reeves & The Vandellas 1968 letter to gabber DJs of the future "I Can't Dance To That Music You're Playing" gets a subtle stomp in the beat department while Sugar Pie Desanto's 1966 R&B pant swinger "Go Go Power" gets the extension its also deserved. Go go Soul Flip.

One Way Love (2:29)
Thank You Girl (2:37)
Review: A northern soul rarity of the highest order, one 45 wonder Hank Hodge's two sided emotion bounty has been known to pass hands for over $1000 and was famously covered up by premiership diggers such as Colin Law to hide its identity. Now democratised by Tramp, both sides still pack an incredible punch: "One Way Love" pumps with a real urgent passion and dramatic horns while "Thank You Girl" should be reserved for a little later in the night with its straight up soul dynamic, big backing vocals and sympathetic orchestration that droops into the background enough to let Hodge cut through with overwhelming power.

Review: As foretold on Kendrick's Untitled two years ago, composer Younge and Tribe Called Quest's Muhammad have been conjuring behind for many years (since 2014 to be precise, on Souls Of Mischief's album There Is Only Now) and Midnight Hour is the incredible result. 20 tracks of ageless Harlem wisdom; the warmth and fusion is rich throughout as we glide from each soulful moment to jazzy highlight with the help of vocalists such as Cee-Lo Green, Luther Vandross and Angela Munoz. Everything about this body of work smacks with class and authenticity; from the sweeping orchestral dynamics of "Gate 54" to the dreamy lo-fi jazz of "Smiling For Me" via the soul jazz vibrancy of "Dans Us Moment D'errance". The night is young...

Mister Bang Bang Man (2018 Remaster) (2:39)
Try To Understand (2:18)
Review: Two serious rarities from Pittsburgh's Little Hank. "Mister Bang Bang Man" is mythical northern soul anthem made famous at Manchester's infamous Twisted Wheel club in the early 70 and only saw very limited release on London Monument before becoming the sole preserve of savvy and lucky selectors. "Try To Understand" was Little Hank's debut from a year earlier in 1965. More of a straight up bluesy soulful ballad, it's still become a cult collector classic and, like the long-awaited A-side, regularly fetches triple figures. Until now...

Stand Up For What You Want (unreleased mix) (4:25)
Stand Up For What You Want (with Les Brown - 7" mix) (4:26)
Review: TMS-released 1984 modern soul cut "Stand Up For What You Want" enjoys its first reissue courtesy of Cordial. The original, loaded with an urgent Les Brown leading the charge, is known across rare groove and funk circles but the unreleased A-side is a lesser spotted animal... Produced by Miami studio genius Willie Clarke, this version fixes our focus plainly on the raw honesty of Kat Roberts solo and sounds all the better for it. Leaner and more emotive, it adds a whole new chapter to a cult classic.

Review: The latest missive from crate-digging reissue imprint Rocafort Records shines a light on the halcyon period of Evasion Disques, an imprint founded by members of rebellious French rock band Les (Faux) Freres in the late 1960s. Comprising 12 little-known cuts released on the label between 1970 and '73, the collection does a terrific job in highlighting the wide-eyed, psychedelic era brilliance of some of the label's now forgotten artists. Listeners can expect to hear a mixture of bluesy psychedelic rock, low-down Gallic funk, dream pop, Ramsey Lewis style excursions (see Hand's brilliant "Shifting Leads") and slightly kitsch instrumental workouts guaranteed to put smiles on faces.

Review: Cordial Recordings in partnership with Pilier Records are proud to announce the return of Philadelphia's legendary Mr Garfield Fleming, with this mini album of new productions. Fleming only released about three singles sporadically between 1981, 1984 and 1991 - but he's an incredibly under appreciated artist, we know that much. All female vocals are performed by fellow Pilier recording artist Mz. Nina. Featuring the sexy deep-funk of "Ain't Nothing Too Good For My Woman" - this one is a true diggers delight for those in the know! The late night boogie-down vibes of "Daddy's Home" or "Is That OK" takes things down slo-mo territory and of course we've just got to mention that terrific Daft Funk Funktion Creep Rub (yep!) of "Grass Ain't Greener".

Review: Shed dwelling funkateer Daytoner has been surreptitiously priming us for this monumental third album moment throughout the year with cheeky 45s "Needed You" and "Second Stomp". Now the moment has landed and it's every bit as varied, infectious and feel-good as we hoped it would be. Highlights include the Brand New Heavies style slink new jazz of "Pacific", the Labi-sampling strutter "I Get By", the sweaty stomping northern soul jam "Needed You" and the big swing sing-along "Sicka". And that's not even half of it.... He didn't name it Off The Hook for nothing.

Review: Super prolific Georgia-born songwriter Clarence Reid's fingerprints are all over the soul game whether it's as a writer and arranger for the likes of Betty Write and The Dells or as a solo artist himself. Reid's sound and style helped to characterise TK Sound and its sister label Alston and his third album Running Water is a perfect example as it ranges from funk-fuelled slippery instrumentation of "If It Was Good Enough For Daddy" to gospel level boogie of "Ruby" by way of yearning ballads that will stop you in your tracks such as "Real Woman". 45 years old and still squeezing hearts.
