Gargoyle Records: Aliens On Acid
Cat: AGTE 01. Rel: 07 Dec 20
Alienage - "Mindreader" (4:30)
The Madd Scientist - "Funky Dreamz" (6:38)
DJ Who - "Shitty Samples On Acid (On The Rocks)" (5:37)
WhoDonIt - "House Rhythm" (4:59)
Review: Destination Baltimore 1995, Alienage (AKA Tony Pegas and Don Corrieri) indulged in a little lysergic and sonic experimentation. The results were a series of seriously heady club bangers released on Gargoyle and they still sound fat as hell 25 years later. This latest reissue sees Alienage take the lead with necksnap electro breaks, a sultry vox and buckets of sub before Pegas goes solo with his Madd Scientist alias on the b-boy style 'Funky Dreamz'. Flip for two from Who: the slamming TCR-style breaks of 'Shitty Samples On Acid' and an earlier 90s-style, heavily layered, slightly proggy jam 'House Rhythm'. Keep watching the skies.

Oh My Days

Auntie Flo - "Oh My Days"
DJ Sdunkero - "Choosing Love"
Review: Huntleys & Palmers continue their mission to bring the best of the world's dance music to the masses with this hugely anticipated release. Glasgow resident Auntie Flo's "Oh My Days" has already found favour with the likes of Jackmaster, xxxy and Pearson Sound, and it's easy to see why. Combining an infectious vocal snippet which lodges itself deep in your brain with a slowly rising synth line and clattering percussion, it succeeds due to its unique mixture of African pop and contemporary bass which is quite unlike anything released this year. But although it's the A-Side here that has been extensively caned by all the big names, South Africa's DJ Sdunkero's "Choosing Love" on the flip is easily as good. A deceptively simple kwaito track, it loops a simple rubbery synth line which is stretched to breaking point, whilst an underlying accordion-like tone gives it a curiously maudlin touch which contrasts its epic scope in great fashion. Essential.

Review: For those with their ear to the ground, 'Make Me' has been an underground monster hit for Borai and Denham Audio for time, but now it's getting a proper 12" release on Room Two with some heavyweight remixes. Taking a classic 90s vocal sample and giving it a thorough ruffing up, the original is hard to top, but Big Ang and Mani Festo turn in suitably rowdy versions which continue the theme of hardcore revivalism in fine style. Meanwhile bassline legend Paul Sirrell steps up for a flamboyant version which harks back to the original mid-90s cut that inspired 'Make Me' in the first place.

Capracara - "House Of Dolls"
Palace - "Mandy"
5kinandbone5 - "Make U Understand"
Dubbel Dutch - "B Leave"
Review: It's almost impossible to keep on top of the Unknown To The Unknown release schedule, such is their relentless energy in putting out material across all formats. This UTTU Rec In Effekt! 12" has probably been our most anticipated release from DJ Haus' label though, granting a physical release to a quartet of Trans-Atlantic heaters that have appeared in the digital domain over the course of the last twelve months. It's an all-UK show on the A Side, commencing with the killer "House Of Dolls" from Capracara which fully demonstrates his masterful command of funked out house grooves. A perfectly bumped beat offsets an organ stab drenched in cavernous delay, whilst digital squalls flit around the nether regions. Alongside this, Palace is on a throwback midnite 2-step flex with "Mandy" sounding every bit like the one track Four Tet should have slipped into his Fabric mix. Flipside and West Coast duo 5kinandbone5 mangle up R&B and darkside garage with aplomb on "Make U Understand" whilst the excellent Dubbel Dutch takes the rhythmic template of drum & bass and fuses it with a modern bass mainframe, taking its R&B sample and combining it with icy synth stabs which create a sound much like a Detroit take on bass.

Review: The Plastik People label has been going along nicely for its first few releases, with label head Marc Cotterell stepping up and coming correct last time out. Now he calls upon various artists with Dave Charlesworth taking care of the a-side of Nice Ripe Cuts. He offers two super slick garage cuts that cannot fail to make their mark on the club and it's no different on the flipside except D Lux & Y No combine first for '25 Miles' and then S R offers the irresistible 'Pressure.' An essential 12" for anyone looking to bring some fresh garage flavours.

Marc Cotterell - "C's Groove" (7:16)
Danny J Lewis - "D's Groove" (6:23)
Review: Set your phasers to garage house, because Plastik People are back in action with true believer Marc Cotterell at the helm. The evergreen sound of big, bashy, bumping drums and sweet, soulful organ chords is as vital as ever in Cotterell's hands, and on 'C's Groove' he's flexing some especially funky wandering bass skills to get the party juiced up good and proper. On the flip another Plastik People regular Danny J Lewis is busy bringing a deeper kind of flavour with cool and deadly chord chops which nod to Mood II Swing, albeit with plenty more fizzy FX and sound design tweaks darting around the hard shuffle and MIDI sax parps.

Summer Heatwave (6:15)
Review: The Plastik People garage wagon keeps on rolling, and they've got that bump n' swing for days. Label head honcho Marc Cotterell is back at it with Danny Phillips, dropping four bombs geared towards exuberant explosions of joy on the floor, leading in with the utterly infectious 'Jersey Music'. 'It's What We Do' keeps the organ stabs tightly clipped and punchy as hell, while 'Give Me Your Love' gets into a Todd Edwards frame of mind chopping the samples around on 'Give Me Your Love'. 'Summer Heatwave' rounds things off beautifully to close the EP with a sweet and sentimental groover that wiggles in all the right places.

Indian Time (Basic Soul Unit remix) (6:02)
Review: Don't Be Afraid sub-label DBA Dubs pulls out an intriguing single, pitching tastings of Bristol bass, middle-eastern themes and watery tabla rhythms of D-Malice with Canada's house faithful Basic Soul Unit. This D-Malice release, somewhat of a surprise inclusion to the label, follows music by Claws For?, beat fusionist Kelpe, Adjowa and No Corner and Idle Hands artist Lily. Both tracks fit a house tempo and it's the percussion of the original that's the real hook, while BSU's thumping remixing delivers a menacing Vermona kick drum with swathes of heavy, dub techno-spheres. A versatile release.

Review: This is a superb various artists' collection that get back to the roots of several sounds from dub and reggae to garage and house. All four gems are guaranteed future classics that tick all the right boxes while also offering up something fresh. Da Elusive Ganjaman opens up with 'Da Return' which has acoustic Spanish guitars and slamming beats, Wodda then offers the silky vocal garage house of 'Don't Mind Me' and Main Phase gets naughty with the filthy bass and sirens of 'Childish.' Last of all, Silva Bumpa's 'Body Right' has pitched up r&b vocals to die for over darker low ends. A top EP with something for all.

He brings a raw mix of bassline, 2-step and garage-infused house having turned heads with releases on the super-hyped Timeisnow label. He brings original and authentic flavours from the off with 'After Effects' which has dark bass and coarse drum textures. 'Inside' is another naughty one with a sleazy bassline and perfect pitched-up vocals and 'Light Footed' then shuts down with crunchy drums, gun finger synths and withering pads all designed to jack the floor.

Review: Bang on trend grooves from the Vivid camp, exploring the current fascination for all things that intersect both the garage and breaks genres. Lead track 'Wicked & Wild' is the one that leans furthest into UKG territory, its bumpy bassline and MC-style vocal giving it heaps of energy and attitude. Flip side instrumentals 'Push Past It' and 'Ronin' meanwhile, evoke the early 2000s spirit of breaksteppers such as Horsepower Productions, the latter especially maintaining the bassline pressure and adding it to the more hardcore vibe of rawer, sampled percussion. Maximum respect!

Review: 2-step meets Latin guitar on this third white label from Dafs, which leads a stonking 6 tracks across two sides with a Pinkpantheress-style rerub of Mahalia's modern classic, 'Sober'. What ensues afterwards is an R&B-heavy array of steppy choons, owing heavily to UK garage's known origins in R&B, new jack swing and hip-hop. 'Stay Ready' samples the eponymous song by Jhene Aiko, condensing her heavenly vocals to alchemic vocal science, while further rerubs of Usher and, of course, Brandy, top it off.

Dam Mantle - "Brothers Fowl"
Dam Mantle - "Dublin"
Lovers' Rights - "Make Your Own Milk!"
Lovers' Rights - "Cnidarian"
Review:  Londoners Get Me! are back with their fifth release after a successful two years of far-reaching, UK-inspired dance floor cuts. This time it's a collaborative effort and Dam Mantle kick things of with "Brothers Fowl", an irresistibly charming future garage track with plenty of those classic chopped up vocals and almost Burial-like, cascading drums; on "Dublin" Mantle injects a straighter beat structure and an impressive collection of gloomy, hypnotising pads. Over on the B, Lovers' Rights give us "Make Your Own Milk", a stunning deep house hybrid with a bumping bass line, making it an all-out bomb which would make the Sunklo boys so very proud! "Cnidarian" is experimental to say the least - a near 150 beats per minute and a fierce array of sci-fi effects and melodies to boot.

HCD2
Review: "Can't Wait" employs the teeth crunching low-end and splintered helium cut-up vocals of classic 2-step, "It's Too Close" echoes this with one of those killer riffs which just seems to open up space before it. "Never Happened" reflects the bassline culture of the noughties British music perfectly, where the bottom end effectively becomes the hook of the record. Closing out an exuberant 12", comes a bonus extra dub version of the JB's classic "High Come Down", with heavy vocal cut-ups and totally reprogrammed edits, sparser, deeper and totally in keeping with the spirit of the original.

Review: Is there a more positive, soulful and life-affirming dancefloor anthem out there than Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's 1996 jam "Gabriel"? As many will be aware, it has long been sought of as a classic, with soulful house, deep house, US and UK garage DJs all championing it back in the day. This white vinyl reissue boasts all of the mixes featured on the original 12". Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

Review: It would be fair to say that Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's "Gabriel" (originally written "Gabrielle" on early pressings) has become a timeless dance music classic - a track that both soulful house and UK garage DJs reach for in times of trouble. Should it not be in your collection already (and it should be), Large Music has decided to re-master and re-press the original 1996 12". It does, of course, contain the now ubiquitous "Live Garage" version - the groovy two-step, trumpet-laden mix that became popular with early UK garage DJs - plus a trio of lesser-known remixes. The Tambourine Dub, in particular, is something of a tough, warehouse-friendly deep house treat.

He invites Job de Jong to step up for the label's second outing and 'Dub House' is a great opener with just the right amount of bounce, melody and heart. Kepler remixes it into a percussive stomper with siren stabs and dusty perc. 'Emergency' is a trippy melodic workout that bends space and time and 'Don't Wanna Stop, Dub Stop' chucks a killer vocal into the mix over sleazy drums and garage drums that are always going to get big reactions.

The Brighton based producer serves up epic A-Side jam "Wish U Were Here", which locks into a 4/4 pulse with euphoric Virgo-style synths and a deftly tweaked vocal snippet - solid end of night tackle right here! Review: UK producer Deadboy will always be synonymous with Jackmaster's Numbers label, having inaugurated it back in 2010 with the one sided If U Want Me 12" back in 2010. It's fair to say Numbers rise since then has been stratospheric and along the way they managed to coax more killer dancefloor material out of man like Deadboy on a roughly annual basis. The suitably titled Return offers a true display of Deadboy's production palette, with a title track that could feasibly suit a film soundtrack. "Des Niles" meanwhile is reminiscent of the 16bit club stylings of label mate Redinho and the B Side brandishes some classic Deadboy hybrid dancefloor slayers in the form of "YHVH" and "Life Code".

It's a classic vibe executed perfectly on here, from the moody 4x4 shuffle of "Back To Your Love" to the uptempo organ pressure of "I Can Feel It". Review: Kyle Hall's imperious remix of Delphic's signature track "Doubt" was originally seen amidst a heady cast of remix talent - Riton, Ramadanman and Doc Daneeka - on limited promo CDs which floated around last year. It hasn't however been officially released until now, at a time when everyone is talking about Kyle Hall whilst scratching their heads to recall the moody New Orderisms of the Mancunian trio. Very little of the original track remains here, with snatches of vocals stretched out over a backdrop of what sounds like an outer galactic ping pong match. Typically unique production from the Detroit lad and it's great to finally have it on vinyl.

Review: Is this the end? It seems like this seventh edition of Demdike Stare's dancefloor brutalising Testpressing series is the final installment "for the time being", bringing to a close a rather vicious succession of rugged club killers and noisy experimental tracks dating back to 2013. If this is indeed the final one, Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker end Testpressing proceedings on a high note with a two track 12" that's up there with the best in the series. Up top "Rathe" begins in heavenly fashion before a sea of white noise brings about a left turn into AFX style distorted half step jungle - wait for the break at the 3 minute mark! It's matched by "Patchwork" which sees a deftly sliced vocal sample from a Wookie classic bounced around the channels as Canty and Whittaker draw vicious lines in the ground with a razor sharp 2 step pattern.

Review: Denham Audio and Groovy D team up for this barn-storming 12" which brings the best of UK garage and breakbeat into three razor sharp club weapons. On the A-side, the pair work together to create 'I'm Ready', capturing a classic R&B vocal and giving it a shot in the arm with deadly sub bass and rolling beats. Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Review: Strangebrew sees San Francisco based button basher supreme Devonwho return to the All City imprint some two years after his sublime debut release Keepthafunkalive dropped. Sun drenched g-funked out instrumental bliss rules supreme across the three Devonwho productions, with the stripped back rhythms of the title track allowing the heliocentric strains of purple melodics the space to shine bright. Alongside this "Sleet" takes an equally slackened 4/4 beatdown approach, with spaced out keys spread lasciviously over several dizzying layers, whilst "Cactus" adopts an altogether hazier poise. Recent Earnest Endeavours addition B Bravo is a smart choice to add his slick glacial bump-funk boogie to the title track.

Whether or not he is the inspiration for the title of this EP we do not know but it's a fittingly good one either way. Holdtight (5:39)
So Hot (5:23)
Ikigai (5:34)
Review: Scott Diaz taps into some old school garage class with this new EP on Pirate Cutxz, but never is it too slavish to the OG sound. Instead, he brings fresh ideas and modern production skills to four characterful cuts. 'Holdtight' opens in bunch fashion with big drums and busy chords dancing about next to yelps and sustained pads. 'So Hot' is a more subtle 2-stepper with a ducking and diving groove bathed in warm synth work and natty bass notes. 'Ikigai' shuts down with some 90s organ chords and sleazy, shuffling speed-garage style drums and well-deployed vocal samples. Effective stuff.

Review: Matt Jam Lamont & Scott Diaz first joined forces more than a decade and a half ago and have been at it ever since, remixing Raze, Craig David, All Saints, Adina Howard, Rosie Gaines and more, as well as making waves with DJ appearances like their iconic B2B Glastonbury appearance. Having formed their Undagrnd Freqz label in 2020, serving up a brace of floor-slaying classics including a collaboration with US garage pioneer Todd Edwards, and 'Haribo' with Smokey 'Bubblin' B, clocking up more than a million streams and 36 million views as part of Fred Again's now legendary Boiler Room session. Their latest, 'The Best of Both Worlds', nods at their skill for fusing the best elements of both house and garage across four tracks of razor-sharp vocal chops, bumpin' beats and classy production flavours. Absolutely essential.

Review: SPIL Records follows up its impressive vinyl debut here with a second 12" release featuring fresh tracks from label head Jack Swift and Scott Diaz. Diaz kicks off with 'Like Dis' which is all classic US house drums and bouncy bass, then Timmy P & Lunoize's 'Ouch' is a swirling, vocal-laced party starter. Swift then offers 'Burning' which is a lively garage house cut with throwback diva vocals. Devstar's Feel The Vibe remix shuts down with some more naughty, dark and dirty bassline sounds perfect for pumping up the floor.

When I'm With U (4:40)
Review: Diffrent makes a powerful entrance with his debut 'My Sound' EP on Bristol's Time Is Now label, building on the success of his summer hit 'A Little Closer,' which had clubs across Europe buzzing in 2024. Here, he dives into the UK's rich foundations of garage, bass and breaks, delivering a weighty yet finely tuned sound that's unmistakably his own. It's the kind of chuggy, speed-garage flavour that's capturing everyone's craving right now. For a debut, 'My Sound' lands with impressive force as each track brings fresh flair and a distinctive character. From the first drop, it's clear Diffrent is carving out a unique spot in modern dance music, positioning him as one to watch.

DJ Doggo - "Let Me See You Dance" (5:14)
Review: There's lots of love about this bold and richly designed new EP on Welt Disco out of Portugal. Diogo kicks off with 'I Need U' which is all lithe synths and choppy drums under yelping vocals. Yakuza's 'Aileron' (part 2 - Diogo remix) is a kinetic workout that is overloaded with deft sounds and pinging bass that darts about the mix. The flipside is taken care of by DJ Doggo who offers two great cuts. 'In My House There Will Always Be House' is a vibe house cut with plenty of characterful samples and a sweet as you like bassline that pulls it onwards. 'Let Me See You Dance' has a filthy low end that is smeared, naughty and sure to get faces screwed up in mock disgust.

Feel Da Rain (D' Pac Rhodes dub) (7:45)
Review: First released way back in 1994 on Kevin Saunderson's KMS label, Dionne Warren's Brian Hall-produced deep house gem 'Feel Da Rain' gets a new lease of life thanks to Windsor, Ontario imprint Collective Rhythm Network (CRN). While the original 12" also featured rubs from Alton Miller and Stacey Pullen, it's D'Pac Patel's dub . a warm, rolling, US garage influenced deep house workout rich in tactile organ stabs, superb grooves and short samples of Warren's vocals - that has become the most sought-after version. On this 12", we get Patel's full-length dub (it was edited down on the original 12") and a previously unreleased 'Rhodes Dub' that adds extra electric piano action for added warmth and flavour.

Dirty Secretz have soul by the bucketload, from the sweet organ stabs to the diva vocal woven into "Once Again". White Noise (HudMo remix)
Review: With the debut Disclosure album on the horizon the hype juggernaut cranks up a notch with this remix from Hudson Mohawke. Clearly implementing the Lana Del Rey formula, Hud Mo's take on "White Noise" comes in the aftermath of a slew of similarly high profile remixes of the brotherly duo (Joe Goddard, Dixon and Jamie Jones amongst them) Given his widely professed love for female fronted RnB, Kanye's mate Hudmo is a perfect producer to approach "White Noise", the Lawrence brother's track with Aluna George's Aluna Francis and the results are revelatory. It's all about the drums here which snap and flutter in all the right places as Disclosure's original melodies percolate and Francis' vocal gets mangled.

You & Me (Toro Y Moi remix)
Review: Disclosure's breakthrough UKG anthem gets the treatment from some of electronic music's most forward-thinking players. The result is a collection of four disparate visions, each one highlighting different strengths of the original. Those looking for instant floor-fuelling power should jump on Baauer's bashy blend. Those interested in a softer, deeper rub should study Toro Y Moi's remix. Those keen on a chugging, chop-slapping jack attack will be delighted to hear Bicep's take while Flume wins the prize for the most abstract twist by way of sharp rhythm cuts and warped processed synth flourishes.

Review: Diskop is back at it again on the Blackloops series, bringing more of that dynamic, multi-faceted rave gear for all the people in the place. Their tracks never fail to hit the mark, and that's abundantly clear on this ninth joint in the series as A side belter 'Doppelganger' kicks in with some seriously rowdy 4x4 garage stylings to incite a great big "oi oi!" from the crowd. On the flip, 'Fowl Play' has a 2-step persuasion in its rhythmic bones, and plenty of playful synth work on top. There are peaks and troughs to tease the energy, ensuring this is a peak timer you can rely on to get the dance greased up good and proper.

Tsey Vo (5:18)
Review: For the next, 21st release on Whiteloops, Diskop, a rising-star producer and DJ from Ukraine, returns with a two-track meander into the sound of old-school UK breakbeat. Drawing on the ambitions of dark rollage and vibesetting that were endemic to this early sound in the noughties, 'Raw' opens with a frank contrast of straight breaks and middy bass hums, while 'Tsey Vo' is a bit starker and harder, edging closer to dimly-lit UK hardcore territory with its well-sculpted transient designs, heard-skipping reverse SFX and phonetic one-shots. Come hither, and experience Diskop's vision of a smoked-out, hooded rave.

Review: It was high time that Jack Dixon appeared on more labels since his first release two years ago - he's even been added to the Hotflush crew. This EP, however, is probably his best moment and the opener "Jessica" is just one of those feel-good garage house tracks, bringing you great vibes all round. "60 Miles" is darker, deeper and more sentimental but the flipside offers funkier moments thanks to "You Old", an irresistible house beat nodding to and fro. "Ironside" is surely the pinnacle however, where muffled, sub-low beats swarm their way into crystal-like pads and mutating basslines.

Review: With Wen's debut album Signals due on Keysound soon, the promising London grime producer serves up this tasty limited white label 12" to whet our collective appetites. The B-side sees standout album track "Signal" delivering the producer's signature blend of pirate radio samples, '03-era grime strings and suffocating subs, but it's all about the A-side for us. A refix of Dizzee Rascal's 2004 white label "Strings Hoe", it slows the original right down and steeps it in contemporary atmosphere. Don't sleep on these - they won't last long.

Review: Thanks to the recent success of founder member DJ Sports, Denmark's Regelbau collective is currently riding the crest of a wave. Here, fellow Regelbau stalwart DJ Central gets a chance to showcase his wares on the crew's in-house label. The first mix of "Drive" is a wonderfully woozy, spacey and laidback affair - despite the presence of skittish, house-tempo hardcore breakbeats - with Erica Casier's sweet vocals rising above Central's deep and hazy backing track. Casier's wonderful vocal is given even more prominence on the deliciously horizontal Ambient Mix. Flip the record over for the real standout highlight: a bubbly, punchy, breezy and bass-heavy Club Mix from DJ Sports that recasts the track as a slipped, two-step garage shuffler full of rich sub-bass and ear-pleasing organ stabs.
