Funketeers (Shonky edit)
Blow Your Whistle (Franck Roger edit)
Brenda (2VILAS 909 edit)
Motion Beats (John Jastszebski edit)
Review: The Politics Of Dancing crew are back with a third round of edits from their close compatriots in the Paris scene and beyond, taking some old-skool house classics and giving them a modern sheen. Shonky is up first, whipping up a spicy salsa of sleek and shimmering 80s tinted house music that screams dancefloor dynamite. Franck Roger then tackles DJ Duke's classic garage house burner "Blow Your Whistle" and teases out the deepest qualities of the evergreen party starter. 2VILAS 909 gets busy with "Brenda," locking into a heads down groove for the late hours, and then John Jastszebski reshapes "Motion Beats" into a gently trippy roller for the wigged out crowd.

Let The Music Play
Day
Touch
Review: Deep house don Brian Garrett has been blazing a trail through the scene via a huge swathe of releases for labels like Sistrum, NDATL, Quintessentials and Skylax, with this year being a particularly prolific one. Now he shores up on Earl Jeffer's Melange with a three tracker steeped in his smooth and sultry sound, leading in with the sax-and-vox-soaked funk of "Let The Music Play." "Day" takes a more sultry approach, locking into a tightly shuffling groove peppered with bugging chord chops and breathless vocal murmurs. "Touch" amps up the soul for the EP closer, riding high on a life-affirming organ line and soaring strings.

Dancer (6:28)
Dreamer (7:31)
Review: Under the Local Artist alias (and later Slow Riffs), Ian Wyatt was one of the first Vancouverites to join hometown imprint Mood Hut's blazed deep house revolution. He's been rather quiet of late, with "Dancer" marking his first outing of any sort for nearly three years. Naturally, it's really rather good, with the title track delivering an exquisite blend of disco percussion, classic U.S garage musicality, proto-house synth flourishes, dub-wise bass and glassy-eyed deep house flourishes. Wyatt dives deeper on flipside "Dreamer", where impeccably rich and tuneful lead lines wrap themselves around another dub-style sub-bass line, echoing riffs and layered, tribal-influenced deep house drums.

Drive (First mix) (5:13)
Drive (Ambient mix) (3:52)
Drive (DJ Sports club mix) (7:03)
Review: Thanks to the recent success of founder member DJ Sports, Denmark's Regelbau collective is currently riding the crest of a wave. Here, fellow Regelbau stalwart DJ Central gets a chance to showcase his wares on the crew's in-house label. The first mix of "Drive" is a wonderfully woozy, spacey and laidback affair - despite the presence of skittish, house-tempo hardcore breakbeats - with Erica Casier's sweet vocals rising above Central's deep and hazy backing track. Casier's wonderful vocal is given even more prominence on the deliciously horizontal Ambient Mix. Flip the record over for the real standout highlight: a bubbly, punchy, breezy and bass-heavy Club Mix from DJ Sports that recasts the track as a slipped, two-step garage shuffler full of rich sub-bass and ear-pleasing organ stabs.

Her Blissful Solitude
Common Places
Radiating Soul
Her Nocturnal Note
Review: Verdant Recordings continues its quest to provide a space for lesser-known artists exploring the deepest pockets of electronic music, not least around the 4/4 axis. Next up on the label is the first public appearance from Interjection, a London-based artist who has been cooking up an immersive sound for some time. "Her Blissful Solitude" is a smoky deep house cut that drifts through heavy clouds of pads, while "Common Places" drops some brittle electro rhythms into the mix without lifting the veil of ambience. "Radiating Soul" has an equally intricate set of rhythms at work, with extra notes of 303 sprinkled over the top, and "Her Nocturnal Note" finishes the EP off with a shimmering trip out to complement the A1.

Review: Houseum goes from strength to strength; from a highly respected online channel they've started hosting awesome intimate events in the heart of their Parisian hometown and now they've launched a label. If you've spent so much as five minutes on their platform, you'll know the vibes on offer here; deep dreamy house laced with cosmic textures, rippling soul and a strong sense of timelessness. From the big vocal salvo of Bellaire's "Oh" right through to the final dubby echoes of Jesse Bru's "Setup", this is exactly the high level of launch release you'd expect from such a respected platform. Houseum is a feeling. A good feeling.

Kaitaia Fire (6:40)
Drum Therapy (6:30)
Review: By now we should know that Chaos In The CBD barely gets it wrong. In fact, we can't think of one duff moment in their rapidly expanding discography. Certainly, there's much to set the pulse racing throughout the Multiverse EP, which happens to be their first missive of 2018. We're particularly enjoying the Adonis-goes-deep bassline, becalmed chords, druggy acid lines and bongo-laden beats of opener "Multiverse" and the humid tropical house hustle of B-side opener "Kaitaia Fire" - deep and woozy, yet percussively adventurous - but the whole EP is superb. The other two cuts, "Double Dribble" and "Drum Therapy", are altogether deeper and calmer, with the latter also feeling wonderfully hypnotic in tone, too.

Review: An integral figure on the Motor City scene for the best part of two decades, Specter has always been a particularly prolific producer. Built To Last - appearing on Theo Parrish's significant Sound Signature label - is his first album-length excursion. It offers an expansive summary of his inspirations and influences - many will notice subtle nods towards local deep house, techno and electro heroes, as well as more experimental synthesizer music, off-kilter electronic jazz-funk, deep space dub and eyeliner-clad early '80s synth-wave - while also showcasing a trademark sound that's every bit as dusty, warm, loose and lo-fi as his lauded Detroit peers.

Review: Dutch producer Larry De Kat is finally back for the first time this year with a new clutch of off-kilter house treatments for the playful DJ to delight in. After the cat-tastic intro, "Moving Fingaz" lays out some choice keys and dusty, shuffling drums, while "7DJ" places everything on an impeccable shuffling minimal house beat. There's some offbeat disco reductions at work on "Insecure," and "Trapped" slows things down to a half step stagger for dubwise heads and boogie cruisers to get loose to. Whatever your persuasion, there's something for everyone on this rich and varied 12".

Someday (club mix) (7:21)
Someday (Some dub) (8:47)
Someday (Accainstrumental) (6:22)
Review: Few vocal deep house records are quite as timeless as Cece Rogers' "Someday", a Marshall Jefferson produced anthem that has continued to be constantly played by discerning DJs ever since its original 1987 release. As most will tell you, it was also the major sample source for Liquid's rave anthem "Sweet Harmony". This South Street reissue replicates the track listing of that initial Atlantic release, albeit it in re-mastered form to sound a little meatier on modern club soundsystems. On the A-side you'll find the essential Club Mix, where Rogers' impeccable vocal and Jefferson's meandering piano solos naturally dominate. These piano solos take more prominence on the "Some Dub" version, which in true '87 style still includes key vocal passages drenched in dub delay, while the Accainstrumental is - ironically - a little more like a contemporary house Dub.

Buddons (5:38)
Review: Jamie Enns AKA Big Zen is the latest producer to emerge from the hotbed of dreamy, otherworldly deep house that is Vancouver. Key3 is his debut and comes packed with the kind of gently psychedelic, glassy-eyed fare that would once have soundtracked sunrise sessions at illicit raves and secret parties. Opener "Big Trance" is a hypnotic and rolling affair, with psychedelic arpeggio lines, dreamy chords and sparkling electronics rising above a bustling rhythm track, while "Weo" is a swirling and bouncy, retro-futurist deep house jam blessed with a trippy spoken word vocal. The combination of dreamy chords, chunky bass and bouncy deep house drums is also evident on "Tip Sonic", while closer "Buddon" is an intoxicating affair full of dense tribal drums and drifting vocal samples.

Alishan Forest Railway (6:50)

Review: To date, much of the material on In Dust We Trust has come from label co-founders Chaos In The CBD. This time out, fellow label chief Jon Sable gets a chance to shine in collaboration with former Amadeus and Let's Play House artist Huerta. You'll struggle to find another cut quite as instinctively warm and summery as A-side "Alishan Forest Railway", a colourful deep house affair where dreamy chords, cascading electronics and eyes-closed synth solos tumble down over a rubbery, Afro-deep groove. B-side "Housework" is deeper and even more seductive, with the duo utilizing enveloping chords, dreamy pads and yearning synthesizer lines to incredible effect.

Escuchame (9:08)
Hi-Tech Soul (9:28)
Review: Italian reissue experts Groovin continue to explore the vast vaults of outspoken Chicago house veteran Glenn Underground. The two tracks here are, naturally, both sought-after and obscure. On the A-side you'll find "Escuchame", a cut that originally appeared on a DJ Deep mix back in 2010. It's something of a driving, body-rocking beast, with the Windy City stalwart wrapping a jazzy electric piano riff (slightly reminiscent of Black Science Orchestra's "Save Us" and Lil' Louis' "French Kiss") and spacey synth flourishes around a thrusting drum machine rhythm and booming bass. Turn to the flip for the melodious and spacey deep house classic that is "Hi-Tech Soul", a previously digital-only track first released way back in 2008.

Review: If you've yet to check Folamour's superb debut album, Umami, do yourself a favour and check it out sharpish. Here a quartet of artists offer up fresh rubs of some of their favourite jams from the criticallu acclaimed full-length. Glassy-eyed Balearic deep house specialists Session Victim kick things off with a brilliantly breezy, melodious and positive rework of "Devoted To U", before Sheffield-based East Midlander Thatmanmonkz goes all jazz-funk on a sweet and rolling revision of "Y'all Right". The EP's most obviously peak-time take arrives at the start of Side B, where Austin Ato serves up a sax-wielding take on "Ivoire" that seems to have boundless energy, before Byron The Aquarius steals the show with a sublime tech-soul-meets-deep-house interpretation of "Look At Me Or I'll Steal Your Eyes".

Perhaps (Earl Jeffers remix) (5:57)
Review: Warren Harris continues to enjoy his most prolific year since the 90s with another immaculate, velvet groove EP on Return To Fade (who gave us his perennial "Caught In The Mxyzptik" EP last year) "In The Morning" is a sumptuous sunrise affair that's powered by a subtle vocal layering over a beat so smooth you barely notice it. "Psalms" offers wisdom beyond its six minutes with yearning jazz chords and soaring Claussellian pads while "Perhaps" moves closer to the dancefloor with a precision balance of weight and introspection. Remix wise Earl Jeffers joins the fray with a Balearic bomb; all rim shots and wizardry, drop this and everyone will get down to shake; there's no 'perhaps' about it.

Break Out (6:48)
Hazy Stomp (3:15)
Your House (5:47)
Review: Here's a genuine surprise: a house 12" from Los Angeles' undisputed master of synth-boogie, Dam Funk. Of course, this isn't house in the traditional sense, and all three tracks still feature the Stones Throw regular's usual fluid synth lines, rich chords and bubbly synth basslines. Even so, with its cowbell-driven 4/4 beat pattern, hypnotic construction and dedication to low-end groove, "Break Out" is still a proper house track. The same could be said of the even more stylistically authentic "Your House", in which Dam Funk does his best to combine his own ear for melody with clear Larry Heard influences. The results are nothing less than superb.

Review: After inaugurating the Bags Inc imprint a little while back, UK bass stalwart Addison Groove and Sam 'Binga' Simpson return with more of their down 'n' dirty exploits here. From the tough rolling jack of "D Question" with its ghetto house samples and hypnotic chords that call to mind Binga's work on 50 Weapons not long ago. More jacked vocals and classic sound of Roland drum machines are explored on the stripped back "Seven Of Nine" and the rather banging "Bashton Valed" gets back to the program in strong and funky hard groove style - with its acidic flourishes and emotive pads.

Review: 'With love from Aarhus from two 'Brisbabes' (that's in their words). New imprint Esoteric Exports out of Australia arrive with their inaugural release, courtesy of Natal Zaks: who has made an enormous contribution to the Danish house scene with his own releases as Central (among several other projects) and the Help Recordings imprint. The Eso EP features classic deep house grooves, like that of "Freeform" (clubmix) with its tough bounce supported by emotive elements and lush celestial synths, while the funked-up hi-tech soul of "Loots For A" (clubmix) will surely appeal to fans of Detroit sounds. Its second Esomix featured on the flip ventures deep into the Amazon rainforest with its syncopated tribal rhythms, but maintains the fat low end rumble of the original - and not to mention those mesmerizing pan pipes.

Review: Rising Irish groove conjuror Mark Laird makes his wax debut on brand new Italian label Hopera with two sterling deep jack house cuts. "Funk That" lives up to its name with rippling perky Detroit- reminiscent synths and soft thumping chugs while "Crazy Things" provides a bit of a grubbier B-side pleasure; weighing in at almost nine minutes with a wavey shimmering steel drum riff, there's a bulbous bassline grinding away beneath that sounds more prominent the bigger the system you play this on. Sitting somewhere between young Faze Action and early Yoshitoshi, Laird's onto some timeless tackle right here.

Review: Ron Trent doesn't release much under the alternate R.T Factor alias; in fact, this is only the Chicago deep house maestro's third EP under the pseudonym since he debuted it four years ago. It's definitely worth picking up, though, because A-side "Blue Twilight", in particular, is especially gorgeous. It's more heavily electronic than some of Trent's productions, making greater use of futurist, Detroit techno style synthesizer motifs, but every bit as deep, melodious, and mood enhancing as you'd expect. Flipside "Electric Ride" also rather good. While it also contains some far-sighted electronics, its use of fluid piano riffs and chunky organ chords is more in keeping with Trent's usual expansive deep house fare.

Laced with a touching, restrained and emotional feel throughout "Olson Waters" sets the tone with its beatless framework and gently cascading arrangements while "Hidden Tropics" adds a little momentum with soft rolling beats, drifting pipes and rising chords that sound reminiscent of Reduction era Art Of Noise. Review: Jesse Bru's career seemed to spring into life in 2017, helped in no small part by a quintet of hugely impressive releases. He's been pretty quiet so far this year, though Ships In The Night is up there with his strongest previous releases. There's a wonderfully bouncy and rubbery feel about opener "Ships In The Night (017 Rework)", a sample-heavy deep house workout laden with bluesy horns, dreamy flourishes and meandering spoken word vocal snippets, while "In Orbit" smothers a locked-in kick-drum beat with spacey, delay-laden synths and drifting electric piano chords.
