Funkin' For Jamaica
Cat: PMKA 1005. Rel: 23 Dec 22
Akiko & Masayasu Tzboquchi - "Funkin' For Jamaica" (feat Mbanja Ritchy aka B-Bandj) (4:07)
Akiko & Masayasu Tzboquchi - "Love Theme From Sparticus" (feat Mbanja Ritchy aka B-Bandj - Clear Day mix) (4:34)
Review: Tom Browne's 1980 single 'Funkin' For Jamaica' has long been something of an anthem - a hybrid funk/boogie classic that remains a staple in sets of hip-hop, disco and soul DJs alike. Given its ubiquity, covering the song is fraught with danger, but remarkably Japanese producer Akiko and guest vocalist Mbanja Richy have successfully put a new spin on it. Their take is subtly tougher and more synth-heavy, with bilingual French/English vocals, nods to Zouk music and a bassline so squelchy it could have been lifted from a P-funk record. Over on the flip, the pair go mellow, deep and laidback on a pleasingly skewed hip-hop soul cover of Terry Callier's legendary vocal interpretation of Alex North's 'Love Theme' from 'Spartacus'. Inspired stuff all told.

Sun Goddess

Sun Goddess (feat Myka 9) (4:40)
Sun Goddess (instrumental) (4:40)
Review: The opening notes of Sun Goddess set the tone for what feels like the perfect soundtrack to a summer afternoon. Track one, 'Sun Goddess (Instrumental)', introduces a playful yet sophisticated guitar riff, effortlessly blending elements of funk and soul. It's the kind of groove that immediately hooks you, a little funky, a little laid-back, making it impossible not to nod along. Things get even more vibrant with track two, 'Sun Goddess (feat Mykah 9)'. Here, the energy is dialled up, offering a soulful twist as Mykah 9's vocals glide smoothly over the beat. The track oozes warmth, combining funky rhythms with a band-like cohesiveness that makes you feel like you're right in the middle of a live performance. It's an immersive experience, with the vocals adding richness and depth to an already bright sound. Both tracks embrace that quintessential summer vibe, blending funk, soul and a touch of band music to create something undeniably upbeat and positive. Mykah 9's contributions, particularly on 'Sun Goddess', add an extra layer of groove, making it a standout. There's an ease to these tracks, an effortless cool that makes them feel timeless, and together, they deliver a feelgood, sun-soaked energy that's hard to resist.

Review: Several new 7" cuts by our good friends over at Bou Ga Louw have landed in our grasp, the Argentinian label pushing brand new South American funk and soul heaters. Big Jim Hangers' 'Jungle Fever' is a high-octane instrumental ballad clearly dedicated to the dirtiest of acts out there, sex. Moans, groans, organs and drums complete the recipe, and this is an attitude mirrored on the B-side with The Moon People's 'Hippy Skippy Moon Strut'. This is a riotous mix of Afrobeat, funk, and jazz, and a mise-en-scene for free love.

Review: German disco might be most closely associated with Boney M but in fact it offers so much more. The scene was initially influenced by the influx of American soldiers camped in the county during the 70s. They listened to far away radio sounds from the US which were always steeped in disco and the locals caught on. Black Pearl Records now showcase how the scene has evolved over the years: and t is vibrant and inventive with its own distinctive characteristics if this i anything to go by. This collection has a cross-section of sounds that go from the classic 70s disco years to cosmic, NDW, synth pop and more. Disco De:Light

J Parker Band - "Live Lady" (TZ edit) (5:08)
Mister - "I Wanna Thank You" (4:50)
Henrietta Thomas - "I Want You (Right Now)" (4:45)
Review: We're used to Star Creature offering up authentically synth-heavy nu-boogie gems, but here they change tack with a little help from Chicago's Boogie Munster Crew. "Attack of The Chicago Boogie" sees them gather together some ridiculously rare private press gems originally recorded by Windy City musicians during the boogie and electrofunk era. They first offer up a fresh TJ & Hirsch re-edit of Andrew Kitchen's thrillingly squelchy and spacey "Attack of the Boogie", before TZ goes solo to rearrange J Parker Brown's deeper, warmer and more soulful lo-fi synth boogie treat "Live Lady". Over on the flip, Mister's "I Wanna Thank You" is a glossy, horn-sporting slab of polished boogie brilliance, while Henrietta Brown's "I Want You (Right Now)" is a bustling and up-tempo affair heavily influenced by jazz-funk.

The Temptations - "Since I Don´t Have You" (2:27)
Blinky & Edwin Starr - "Never Gonna Give You Up" (3:00)
Review: A brand new funk and soul compilation throwing back to four cross-sixties exquisites, Soul 4 Real have really outdone themselves this time about. We lead with the pithy prancing-about that it Gladys Knight & The Pips' lost-love magic carpet ride in song, 'Show Me The Way', which flaunts the singer's tumescent voice in a flurry of longing to acquire her crush's ticker. Then Martha Reeves' apparently, formerly unreleased 'This Is The Love' showcases the Alabaman's vaso-dilated voice against an equally degage but still hooking soul jovial. The B travels further back in time to The Temptations' 'Since I Don't Have You', an unreleased stock with an especial Christmas charm from the Motown towerers; and finally, Blinky and Edwin Starr consummate a duetting soul love, through harmonics and end-phrase ghost notes, on the closing 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.

Review: Released 40 years ago in 1977 ''Rhythm Of Life '' by James Mason was possibly one of the greatest vocal Jazz fusion releases of all time . New vinyl imprint Dynamite releases a quality limited edition double pack release showcasing the highlights from that album plus some additional rare versions of the tracks. The version of 'Sweet Power Your Embrace'' is taken from the incredibly rare 7 inch promo only issue. On the flipside is a different version of the club floor dancer ''Free'' which features a heavy bongo workout . The 45 second slab on this package features two tracks featuring the vocals from Clarice Taylor on ' I've Got My Eyes On You'' and the superb 'Slick City' which were both never commercially released as a 45 before.

Review: James Mason had a voice like no other and the ability to project it loud and proud. Thanks to the likes of Floating Points and Red Greg his music has been brought back to the fore for a fresh generation and while his 'I Want Your Love' will always be his biggest tune, he has plenty more up his sleeve. Four of them feature on this reissued 7" by Dynamic Cuts: 'Sweet Power Your Embrace' is impassioned jazz funk with big horns and bigger vocals, 'Free' is a tight high speed funk groove and 'I've Got My Eyes On You' is more high octane jazz-funk then 'Slick City' slows it down to a more groovy, hip swinging pace.

Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll (part 2) (5:18)
Review: Japanese label Octave looks to influential musician Vaughan Mason for this funked up 7". Mason is a disco-funk producer who hit it big with 1980's roller skating anthem 'Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll.' The big, dazzling single initially came on Brunswick Records and has long been a source of sample gold for a wide range of big name artists including the likes of Daft Punk, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest. It gets reissued here across two parts. The funky bass, the celebratory skate-based lyrics soar up top and the loose rhythm section gives plenty of reason to cut loose on the floor.

A well-rounded, sticky quality is heard on this septagonal crock of heaters, with the downtempo slink-funk of 'Late At Night' and the equally sumptuous, string-backed plod of 'Wonderful Feeling' remaining our highlights.

Review: Curtis Mayfield's timeless anthem 'Move On Up,' from his 1970 debut album Curtis, receives a vibey makeover by UK DJ and producer Mark Knight. Teaming up with Dutch label Spinnin' Records, Knight infuses this classic with a funky modern twist, blending classic soul with contemporary house. The remix maintains the song's empowering message and propulsive energy while introducing a faster, dancefloor-friendly tempo, punchy drum hits, and big filtered basslines. This respectful fusion captivates both new listeners and long-time fans, bringing Mayfield's iconic track alive for today's dancefloors. Including the original on the B-side is a brilliant touch, preserving its legacy while celebrating its renewed vitality.

Funky Sensation (0:30)
Review: Yet another reissue of this enduring classic. Legendary Miami songstress Gwen McCrae had plenty of huge hits in her arsenal, from '90% Of Me Is You' to 'It's Worth The Hurt.' Her biggest tune by far is the sure fire dance floor heater 'Keep The Fire Burning.' The strident disco funk beats, the soaring vocal and the impossible warmth and soul of it all never fail to make a mark. Here it is backed with the more slow and deep cut funk of 'Funky Sensation,' which gets those hips swinging and hands clapping.

Cherrystones (3:15)
Review: Even though it appeared on his fine 1971 album "Headless Heroes Of The Apocalypse" - a suitably dystopian set in which our hero rails against the ills of godless society - "Jagger The Dagger" is not one of Eugene McDaniels better known tracks. Yet as this Japanese seven-inch reissue proves, it remains a superb chunk of bizarre-but-brilliant jazz/rock/soul fusion full of delay-laden country style guitar solos, weirdo backing vocals, sumptuously laidback grooves and vocals that take aim at Mick Jagger and his "devil's dance". Flipside "Cherrystones" is a Vietnam War-era civil rights cry built around good old-fashioned fuzz-toned grooves, Chuck Berry style rock 'n' roll guitar solos and a pretty crazy lead vocal.

Review: This EP has proved hugely popular over the years and always sells out whenever it gets reissued. This will likely be the case again here with this newly remastered version via Tri Fire. It is a cult boogie and disco blend from Robbie M and The Midnight Express show band that originally hails from Rock Island in Illinois. Review: Dominican band Midnight Groovers was founded back in the early 1970s and went on to become known as one of the best around at what they did. They have a unique sense of sway and swing and cadence to their music and that is well exemplified by the A-side tune on this new 45 rpm. It makes for a double pronged attack on both body and soul. The flip side 'Ce bon comme ca' features an edit by Dominique Panolm, a singer-songwriter from Guadeloupe who keeps the energy but updates it with a more modern touch that is sure to ignite dan floors. Another superb offering from Atangana Records.

They recorded this superbly good psyched-out and dubbed up masterpiece in 1981 and here both sides offer the same tune in different arrangements. There is more of an afro vibe to the opener with great sax and synth phrasings and vocals from a choir that are weirdly processed. On the flip is a more downtempo mix for Carribean and chilled out vies. They are both versatile and sure to liven up any club.

The a-side from the Japanese DJ and producer is as tight as they come. It adds many new layers to an iconic tune, with big horns, kicking hip hop drum work and a funky bassline that you hope will never end. It's action packed from front to back, and cannot fail to detonate any dance floor. Now re-released via Octave Lab, we're once again reminded of the American bandleader's easy wrist-flicking grooves and organ pumps, with the star tune here representing a simple framing of funk and soul at its most essential, without fluff or pomp. This special edition tosses us an unreleased remix from Kenny Dope, infusing his signature funk-in-the-trunk style into an authentic and primally mixed track, working directly from Mitchison's original 8-track tapes. The label has form in this regard, previously granting the A.r.t.
