Four Minutes Of Funk (7" limited to 250 copies)
Cat: OGR 843. Rel: 21 Mar 23
Abram & Nestor - "Four Minutes Of Funk" (4:02)
Nestor Alvarez - "El Trombonista" (2:50)
Review: Neil Anderson's unashamedly revivalist Original Gravity label is back once again - when are they not dropping heat, frankly? - with more funk goodness. This time out it is two more massive slices of tasty Latin funk getting served up. The first is Abram & Nestor's 'Four Minutes Of Funk' which is indeed four minutes of funk that will unite dancefloors from here to eternity with its big organ magic. Nestor Alvarez' 'El Trombonista' is as you might guess denied by its big trombone and also boasts some great horn work. These are two steamy and sizzling cuts that prove irresistible.

This time out it is two more massive slices of tasty Latin funk getting served up. The Breakbeat Junkie vs DJP - "Drop Down"
DJ Kid Stretch - "Bomb Style"
Niko - "Disco Monster"
Stickybuds - "Kingston Funk"
Review: The eighth volume of the Big M's sample heavy series gives some old school classics the dirty breakbeat treatment. First up sees Breakbeat Junkie and DJP take on Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)", while DJ Kid Stretch re-imagines the legendary "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang, laying down some funky as hell strings and killer drum programming. Flip over for the twisted synth carnival that is "Disco Monster" by Niko and the wobbling "Kingston Funk" by Stickybuds, which samples Basement Jaxx's evergreen "Do Your Thing".

The Lovers Revenge (3:41)
Review: Dirty Harry is a real maestro with his MPC and after too long without hearing from him, he is now back on the buttons and seemingly in fine form. The London born artist is a real jazz, rap and funk veteran with years of knowledge and he brings all that to the table each and every time. His frequent collaborator is Nat Lover, whom he met while travelling in New Zealand, and together they deliver some real rawness here. "Combat" is a flurry of chords, scratching and New York street breaks that hits hard and "The Lovers Revenge" carries on in much the same fashion.

A Man About A Dog - "Pollos" (3:23)
Review: Perennial party boosters, Breakbeat Paradise dive into spring with a fire quartet of modern funk. With bands repping across Europe, it's a global groove affair as longstanding German funkateers buss up big boogie hooks on "Get On Down", Swiss soulboys Grand Mothers Funck up the tempo with the sweaty floor-focussed groove of "The Dog" and Nasa Funk fly the p-funk flag so hard and proud they need a new pole. UK's A Man About A Dog rips up the finale with a scratched-out Latin heater. Original.

I Don't Understand Love (Naughty NMX & Marc Hype reflip) (4:36)
Review: More hot-to-trot edit goodness from Dusty Donuts, a seven-inch series aimed firmly at DJs who spin breakbeat-driven funk, soul and disco. These two "re-flips" are the work of Marc Hype and Naughty NMX, two hip-hop loving Berlin veterans who can trace their careers back to the turn of the '90s. On the A-side you'll find "Flamboyant Move", a swirling, string-laden chunk of disco-era soul goodness toughened up with the addition of fat new hip-hop beats, contemporary rap samples and some carefully placed dub delays. They push the envelope further on side B, utilizing string-laden chunks of a soaring disco-soul classic in a loved-up, head-nodding hip-hop workout that should appeal to all those who like their beats served with a big dollop of celebratory, peak-time flavour.

Lancaster Bomber - "African Sauna" (7:11)
Review: The Apricot Ballroom crew are operating out of Sheffield and carrying the torch from the foundational work of David Mancuso's Loft parties and similarly spirited affairs like Lucky Cloud. Now they launch a label loaded with smoking hot edits that very much speak to the vibe of their parties - rich, warm 70s grooves that spring from the staple sounds of disco into cool, slick and psychedelic spheres. First up is Joi La Frique with the French flair of 'Family Rally', while Beard In Dust lays down some heavy slapping, cowbell toting funk with 'Calypso Boy'. On the flip, Nonna Fab ups the boogie mood with some nasty Moog action on 'Tension (Release Mix)' before Lancaster Bomber whips up a proto house storm with 'African Sauna'.

Review: Rhythm Section International is one of the scene's most influential and therefore respected labels. Its Shouts 2021 compilation has already got plenty of plaudits and for good reason. It is a diverse selection from sure to be star names such as Liluzu who opens with the slow and snaking house of 'Nano.' Elsewhere Nidia brings a richly melodic perspective to some loose broken beats on 'Celebration' and Klein Sage's 'The Sayers' is a superbly vibes, stripped back bit of jazzy basement house with finger clicks to die for and a great monologue that pokes fun at plenty.

Review: The Original Gravity label is dedicated to unearthing deep cover gems from across a world of funky grooves, and this time they're turning their attention to the work of Luchito and Nestro Alvarez. 'Fortune Teller' is a big beat 60s-style Latin stomper with more soul than a shoe shop, all tumbling drums and punchy brass. 'Para Que?' takes things in a smokier direction, letting the piano lead the way while holding down a tight groove that should go down smooth as silk on a jazz-minded dancefloor.

Luchito - "My Baby Likes To Boogaloo" (3:05)
Nestor Alvarez - "Arroz Con Frijoles" (2:55)
Nestor Alvarez - "El Relojero" (2:52)
Review: Following up their first edition of the comp, Original Gravity Records here offer up the second instalment of the Latin Fever series, charting the talents of many underappreciated Cuban artists - or at least, so it seems. In reality, the artists 'Luchito' and 'Nestor Alvarez' don't exist; they're deft fabrications of personality, envisaged by OG label boss Neil Anderson, who aims for a pitch-perfect emulation of Cuban salsa music and fusion. In gathering every instrument, musician and lo-fi aspect of production, it's a feat he impressively achieves: Luchito's two tracks are both move-on-up Latin heaters (listen closely, and you'll realise they're perfectly on-grid for club play). The Alvarez tunes are no less energetic, although the B-side closer 'El Relojero' is a particularly cool slower jam, with blue noted Hammond organs and trumpets nailing a rumbling rumba.

'Tighten Up' actually couldn't be any tighter. The drums prickle as they race along with breezy sung-spoken vocals up top and big horn work that will liven up any party. Review: Original Gravity serves up cause for lift-off once again with a red hot new Latin-tinged funk 7" from Luchito and Nestor Alvarez. They take one tune each with Luchito going first. The driving drums and big horn stabs of 'Feed Me Good' are joined by some more sultry trumpet solos while the fiery vocals add fuel to the flames. Review: A stellar mix of DJ-able breakbeat and northern soul from Luchito Rodriguez and Nestor Alvarez, two of our favourite contemporary funk artists active today (as long as we're certain of their identities, that is). This limited 7" contains two versions of the same killer track: 'Soy Un Hombre' reincarnates the triumphant 'achievement' of manhood through carnal brasses and kettle drums, in a quiver-inducing cover version of Spencer Davis Group's classic track 'I'm A Man'.

Review: Original Gravity, Luchito Rodriguez and Nestor Alvarez return with yet two more Latin groove versions of funk and soul classics, emulating two sounds not yet brought together enough. 'Dap Walk' is a shot-by-shot cover of the song of the same name by Ernie And The Top Notes - a slick and slippery interpretation that translates the original AAVE of the song's intro into Spanish. 'El Barrio', meanwhile, opts for 70s crime thriller vibes, instrumentally verging on expressionism via djembe, brass sections and vibraslaps.

Luchito - "Hey! Guajira Baby" (3:12)
Nestor Alvarez - "Bang The Bongo" (2:51)
Nestor Alvarez - "Lupita" (3:07)
Review: London-based funk-mongers Original Gravity serve up some serious Latin heat from the mighty Luchito and Nestor Alvarez. Both artists were last on the label earlier this year for the Latin Fever Vol. 2 single, and now they're back with more life-affirming bursts of funk. Luchito takes up the A side with two tracks - 'Broasted Or Toasted' is a cool-as-you-like bit of jazzy beatdown with some sweet flute, while 'Hey Guajira Baby' is a singalong anthem rendered in the sweetest salsa tones. Alvarez is on the flip with the pattering bongo magic of 'Bang The Bongo Side' and the heavy groove of 'Lupita', which sounds like it's packed with deadly breaks for those who still like a little crate digging.

Nestor Alvarez - "La Gordita Americana" (3:09)
Nestor Alvarez - "Ixo's Taxi" (2:36)
Review: Latin Fever Vol. 3 offers a vibrant collection of tracks from Luchito & Nestor, as well as solo efforts by Nestor Alvarez (a.k.a. Neil Anderson). Luchito & Nestor's rendition of The Olympics' 'Good Lovin' kicks things off with a blistering Latin boogaloo twist, featuring infectious rhythms and lively brass. The instrumental Part 2 replaces lead vocals with a dynamic flute topline, adding a fresh layer to the classic hit. On the flip side, Nestor Alvarez's 'La Gordita Americana' is an uptempo boogaloo groover led by horns and piano, delivering an energetic and danceable vibe. The collection concludes with 'Ixo's Taxi,' a skeletal xylophone-led funk track that brings a unique, nostalgic charm. Each track on this release has a rich blend of Latin rhythms and boogaloo energy, making this an exciting 7" to hit the dancefloor to.

It is another choice reissue that has been dug carefully out of the vaults and comes in seriously limited quantities on 7". Luchito & Nestor kick off with the original version of 'Tighten Up' on the a-side and it's packed with high-tempo breaks and sung-spoken vocals. Infamously sampled by Q-Tip for 'Whateva Will Be' as well as on a range of earlier 90s boom-bap era productions, it is not at all hard to figure out why it's a coveted record. The Nairobi Sisters were singers Terrie Nairobi and Judy Mowatt, and 'Promised Land' was first recorded with the band The Gaytones, under license to the Gay Feet label. Later cut to Winston Jones' Flames Records, the track and its dub version came to define the Brooklyn reggae scene, owing to the enduring interest it commands today.

Review: Tramp Records come at us with an exclusive, ninja-lethal wax, chucked squarely in our direction: the debut 7" single from Natural Life lays down two extra-special instrumental jazz-funk cuts for our pleasure. Never heard before on the tiny label, and with little background info out there to scour (we're pretty sure it's not the same Natural Life as the upbeat funk band active throughout the 1990s), all that's left is to use our ears. Both versions of the eponymous track are essentially an obverse and inverse of the same theme, except for the fact that one is funky in the fast, riveting sense; the other in the slower, sultrier sense. Both are nonetheless rapid, to-the-point heaters, and can be easily deployed and exploited in many a party - or afterparty - context.

Just two crisp, piquant, fresh, and bubbly uncorkings in sound - 'Life', featuring vocalist Emi Tawata, and the instrumental 'Master Blaster'- are here heard sprayed like buckshot across the stereo system. The former is a candid admission by Tawata of her fear of the dark and ghosts, one which compels the listener to ponder the song's spiritual metaphor - "I'd rather have a piece of toast, watch the evening news" being the lyric of note - while the latter is a comparatively muted four-to-the-floor funk inflammation, held together by a phat but tricksy drum line and overgirding Rhodes.

Led by drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki, the trio has spent the last five years offering up killer cover versions of everything from dancefloor jazz staple "Root Down" and Roy Ayers' "We Live In Brooklyn, Baby", to Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" and, appropriately, Bob James' "Nautilus". Here they deliver another killer interpretation of a classic, adding layers of spacey jazz-funk instrumentation and a mind-altering vocoder vocal to the oh-so familiar grooves of Lonnie Liston Smith staple "Expansions". Japanese re-edit king Ryuhei The Man delivers his interpretation on the flip, wisely making more of the brilliant bassline and Sasaki's superb drumming.

After a series of well-received 7"s and an album, Refrain, back in May, they now return with two more of their superbly well crafted and musical singles. 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is all splashy cymbals and tight jazz drumming, with noodling Rhodes chords and the icing on the cake - a vocal from Nanami Shimizu. Flip it over for 'Solitude' which is a much more sparse and slow jam where there is room between the beats for the starry-eyed chords and keys to real make their mark. This is golden stuff once more from this fine collective.

Skycrapers (4:01)
Another World (4:39)
Review: Japan's premier jazz funk covers outfit Nautilus are back on the scene with another 7" of those pristine grooves they lay down so well. They've been busy lately, recording the Serendipity album with Lisa Decker and just releasing the Reconnection album amongst other singles and EPs, but once again they've got more beautifully executed music to impart to the world. 'Skyscrapers' rides on a taut breakbeat and features some slinky bass guitar, striking an ever-so-slightly moody tone. 'Another World' is all about the snappy piano hooks, with the band following dutifully behind each melodic passage and winding up in something sweet and funky - as if you expect any less from this band.

We Gettin' Down (4:11)
Nautical Table (4:09)
Review: Japanese rare groove merchants Nautilus are back in the wake of their Reconnection album with a new 7" of sweet and smooth jazz funk in their signature style. There's an endlessly crisp quality to the playing and production on Nautilus records which ensures they land with maximum effect. The A side on this new single is 'We Gettin Down', a bright and breezy confection with some choice talk box action, Rhodes and synths in conversation and sprightly beats. 'Nautical Table' gets a little craftier, dealing in skittering drums and nimble piano without losing that clarity we've come to expect from this highly talented group.

The World Is A Ghetto
Review: Japanese jazz trio Nautilus return for their blitzingly fast jazz fusions, laying down two new ones, 'Virtual Insanity' and 'The War Is A Ghetto'. The former track - originally a Jamiroquai hit - comes as a mega-fast-drummed vocal version with Mizuki Kamata on beltings. The B-sider, meanwhile, comes as a broken-beaty nu-jazz version of War's 'The World Is A Ghetto', providing a clever titular reference and a nice instrumental slinker to match.

Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong (4:28)
Review: With an irresistible blend of broken beat and nu-jazz grooves, 'Chameleon' is a enjoyable smooth jazz gem driven by funky basslines, strings, lively percussive and catchy keys. The arrangement flows effortlessly, creating a sound both sophisticated and danceableia perfect balance of complexity and accessibility. Flipping to the B-side, 'Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong' takes a more laid-back approach. Led by a warm, soulful organ, the track exudes chill vibes with its subtle funk underpinnings and jazzy finesse. The addition of a vocoder adds a playful, retro-futuristic charm, rounding out a composition that's as soothing as it is engaging.

Review: Prolific Japanese jazzers Nautilus - made up of drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki, keyboardist Daisuke Takeuchi, and bassist Shigeki Umezawa - present their latest 7" release 'A Story About You'. It's an emotive A-and-B-sider of mournful mood, with the A-side cemented by rolling pianos and a central lyric-melody performed by Mariko's talkbox, and B-sider 'Sweet Power Your Embrace' coming as a cover of the 1977 classic by James Mason. Signaling news of a full-length album to come - you'd better fasten your seatbelts.

What You Won't Do For Love (feat Ryuto Kasahara - Soul Supreme remix) (4:04)
Review: Nautilus brings smooth grooves with 'Why I Came To California' on Oonops Drops. Side-1's title track features Eki Shola and Denise M'Baye, blending classy funk, soul, and pop into a sophisticated jam. The song shines with its elegant piano and seamless jam section, offering a timeless vibe. On Side-2, Ryuto Kasahara's Soul Supreme remix of 'What You Won't Do For Love' revitalises the classic funk tune. The remix retains the original's charm while injecting a fresh, soulful energy. Nautilus delivers a stylish and heartfelt homage to funk, making this a hot 7" for fans of the genre.

Caught Up (Grooveman Spot remix) (4:08)
Review: We've become accustomed to hearing Nautilus offer-up authentic, Hammond-rich jazz-funk of the sort associated with such 1970s titans of the genre as Lonnie Liston Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jimmy Smith and Herbie Hancock. On 'Caught Up', the flip the script, recruiting vocalist Emi Tawata to help conjure up a wonderfully starry, warming, organic and mood-enhancing slab of R&B-influenced modern soul. Their Rhodes-laden (and genuinely inspired) original mix comes accompanied by an alternative take from Jazzy Sport regular Grooveman Spot, who brilliantly re-imagines the song as a squelchy, synth-laden slab of slipped soul rich in colourful electronics, bold electronic bass and crunchy machine beats.

Mizuki Kamata - "Track 2" (feat Nautilus) (4:18)
Review: Nautilus are a Japanese band named after the iconic Bob James song, which also tells you a lot about their style - which is a mix of modern rare groove that also embodies elements of jazz, funk, disco, soul and hip hop. In just five years they have built up a solid global fan base and this new single explains why. 'Move On Up' (feat Mizuki Kamata) is both filled with golden era acid jazz goodness, but also slick modern jazz tinged grooves that fit right in with the contemporary landscape. ON the flip, 'Track 2' is more slow and late night, a tender basement jam for cuddly dancing.

Review: Spanish producer Kiko Navarro has joined up with veteran Beninois vocalists and musical powerhouse Kaleta and the next level skills of The Ibibio Horns for this vibrant new 12". It's an inspired and Afro-infused groove exploration with funk, disco and acrobat all bottle dup in the beats that traverse Afria from East to West. Instrumentals are also provided for more direct to dancefloor business.

Review: Kalita are excited to announce as their second release of 2020, the first ever official re-release of Cameroonian singer Jeannette N'Diaye's 1981 disco masterpiece 'Makom Ma Bobe', backed by an extended edit courtesy of Mendel! Originally appearing as one of three tracks on 'Mut'a Mbamba', her 1981 single released on Cameroonian producer Jojo Ngalle's record label Disques Jojo, 'Makom Ma Bobe' has recently exploded as one of the most sought-after Afro-disco records out there, with prices becoming ever exceedingly eye-watering and copies ever harder to find. You Are My Dream (4:58)
I Have A Good Job (5:38)
Review: This 45 from Pepite should excite all those who dig high-quality, little-known boogie-era brilliance. Both tracks originally featured on little-known French artist Nel Oliver's second, self-titled album, which hit stores in 1980, but have since become secret weapons for a handful of European record collectors. A-side 'You Are My Dream' is smooth, soulful and groovy, with Nel adding emotive, accented English language vocals to a warming, laidback boogie groove full of metronomic bass, bongo-laced drums, crunchy guitars, fluttering flutes and starry synths. Flipside 'I Have a Good Job' is arguably even better, with Oliver's echo-laden vocals rising above heavy Clavinet ruffs, spacey synths and more luscious, laidback grooves.

El Amor Es Un Bicho (2:29)
El Diablo (2:43)
Review: The story behind this Henry Nelson record is a remarkable one. The Colombian artist recorded the two Latin soul tracks featured on it after moving to Spain in the late 1960s. As no Spanish labels liked what they heard, he was forced to return to South America and the songs were eventually released on an obscure Argentinian label in 1969. Original copies are a genuine rarity, hence this Madmua reissue. A-side 'Al Emor Es Un Bicho' is wonderfully fiery and fierce, with Nelson and his musical collaborators brilliantly fusing elements of psych-rock, funk, soul and British beat music. Flipside 'El Diablo', a confirmed Latin funk stomper blessed with a sing-along chorus, is equally as righteous.

Agnaldo Rayol - "Sumauma" (3:38)
Review: After delivering some killer reissues over the last few years, Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series has reached "buy on sight" status. It goes without saying that the label's latest double-header of hard-to-find Brazilian gems is white hot. A-side Neno Exporta Som's impossible-to-find 1971 gem "Deixa A Tristeza", a wild and life-affirming fusion of samba and funk full of fuzzy sax solos, glassy-eyed vocals and heavyweight grooves. Over on the flip you'll find another killer cut from '71: "Sumauma" by MPB star Agnaldo Rayol. Blessed with a great groove and incredible arrangement, it sounds like a Brazilian take on the sort of over-the-top songs used to open James Bond movies in the 1970s (albeit with a bit of samba sunshine thrown in).

Review: Ramrock Retro strikes gold again with Aaron Neville's soulful classic 'Hercules.' This track instantly stirs real emotions with Neville's effortless, heartfelt vocals, deep-swinging drums and classy horns. A falsetto at the breakdown elevates the song before the rhythm powers on. On the flip side, Al Jarreau's 'Use Me' delivers familiar yet timeless vibes. Whether you prefer this version or others, the result is always the same: deep, slow-motion funk with a sensual, groovy edge that you will not want to end.

You Mess Me Up
Review: Two track 45 from one of the UK's finest exponents of the nu funk sound, The New Mastersounds. Sassy as the vocal chorus of ''Yo Momma'' might be, it's all about the flipside as we venture into classic New Mastersounds instrumental territory. ''You Mess Me Up'' is not for the fainthearted, as this urgent funk bomb takes no prisoners, with frantic fat back drums pounding out the beats with vengeance. One of the biggest and grittiest guitars committed to wax appears to attack your speakers with wild abandon while a swirling whirlpool of Hammond organ brings up the rear.

Look up the meaning of Deep Funk online and the smarter cookies will have this New World 7", The World Today, listed as a prime example; a huge cut for the master Keb Darge back at the turn of the 21st century and a very record whose original copies trade hands for silly money. Recorded and released back in 1974 for Frank Virtue's Philly label Virtue Records, both cuts from the 7" have been kindly licensed to Athens Of The North by the man's daughters. Form an orderly queue, thank the Virtues, thank DJ Fryer, and cherish this gem of a deep funk 7!
