Review: Once dubbed by Young Marco as "the King of Chords", Italian ambient pioneer Gigi Masin has yet to make a duff album, or one that's not deliciously warm and loved up for that matter. Predictably he maintains this near perfect record with "Calypso", his first set for R&S Records' downtempo offshoot Apollo. Interestingly, it's perhaps a little more eclectic than you might expect, with cuts clearly influenced by Steve Reich and Jon Hassell (see opener "Calypso" and "How To Disappear In A Kiss") and dusty trip-hop beat-scapes ("Belamore", the jazz-flecked beauty of "Anemone") nestling side by side with fireside-warm ambient luxury ("If", "Your Name Is My Infinite") and pin-sharp synthesizer journeys ("Kalifa Golf Club"). It all adds up to one of Masin's most magical albums yet - and that's saying something.

Cherchez (vocal remix) (4:00)
Cherchez (Le B-Boy) (3:42)
Review: The Altered Tapes crew's sneaky remixes are amongst the finest around, as this latest must-check "45" proves. "Cherchez" has been doing the rounds for a couple of years digitally, so it's great to see it finally land on wax. It's a flip of Ghostface Killah's "Cherchez La Ghost", with the venerable rapper's verses rising above a weighty backing track crafted from hand picked samples of classic funk jams. Weighty and floor-friendly, it's the kind of bootleg revision that's guaranteed to get the party started. "Cherchez La B-Boy" on the flip strips out most of his vocals and instead chooses to base the action around fat funk breakbeats and an even more sizable bassline.

Review: For the latest volume in his essential "Beats And Knowledge" series of albums, 4 Hero man Marc Mac has decided to focus on the largely forgotten story of the tens of thousands of black soldiers who fought in the second World War - and in particular the plight of those black Americans who died for their nation after experiencing segregation and prejudice at home. It's in effect a mixture of social history (delivered via spoken word snippets) and instrumental hip-hop beats mixed together to form a seamless journey that's both thought provoking and musically moving. Sadly there aren't many copies floating around (Omniverse only pressed 400), so we'd advise snapping up a copy while you still can - it's well worth picking up.

Club Aura (5:07)
Mike's Gone Back To Manchester (5:17)
Little Blue Pills (7:03)
Drum Therapy (6:33)
Review: Brooklyn based Significant Other is a fast rising artist who very much comes of age on "Club Aura", his third EP. It lands on UK label Oscilla Sound and is filled with fascinating rhythmic explorations, subtle details and stuttering broken beats. "Mike's Gone Back To Manchester" is a dub, paranoid urban soundscape and "Little Blue Pills" is jagged and edgy with slowed rhythms that hypnotise. "Drum Therapy" is busier, exploring a wide stereo field with skittish hits and deft details all colouring in another spare but compelling groove. Inventive, off grid and brilliant, this is very much the sound of an artist who has found his own sound.

Review: Second time around for David "Move D" Moufang and Benjamin Brunn's first full-length collaboration, a set of unsurprisingly deep, minimalistic house, techno and ambient workouts that first appeared in record stores way back in 2006. It's one of those albums that's arguably best listened to while flat on your back in an intoxicated state, despite the presence of such hypnotic, early morning club workouts as "On The Magic Bus" and the dreamy and delightful "O". You see, the majority of the album's eight tracks are spaced-out in the extreme and all the more alluring for it, as Moufang and Brunn expertly showcase their ability to create impeccable slices of hushed, otherworldly electronic minimalism.

Track 1 (18:40)
Track 2 (22:20)
Review: South Korea's intimate and acclaimed venue, The Edge, was the address Parisian IDM and electronica talent DK chose to record this limited 12" journey into deep, atmospheric sound. Given the shamefully sweeping and stereotypical view of everything East Asia being steeped in traditions of spirituality, it's hard to imagine a more fitting location for these wares to be laid out. Less a case of individual tracks, and more along the lines of movements - to borrow from the classical world - listeners should prepare for a slice of avant-garde ambience here, with compositions offering moments of tension, release, subtle rhythm and soaring sonic scapes. Very much one for those who want their keys to grow and build like organic lifeforms, there's not much else to be said, other than you should prepare for a real aural experience.

Midnight Driver (6:42)
Pulsating On D Mayor (3:10)
Moon Road (6:50)
The Deep Disco (3:10)
Review: There's certainly plenty of sleaze you can read into this one. Ilya Santana takes blueprints of electronic music created in the 1980s and ups the ante, delivering four tracks that are destined to do well on deeper and more chug-focused global dancefloors. The kind of stuff that's deceptively heavy while also musically far-reaching, crank the volume up and stomping will come naturally. Very much in the realm of the late, great Andrew Weatherall, and therefore also one for fans of heads such as Manfredas, Optimo and the like, at the most solid, proggy end you've got 'The Deep Disco', destined to make more than a few people sweat, while 'Moon Road' sits on the lighter side comparatively, its tom drums and waves of synth underpinned by a deceptively solid kick.

Review: Arcane and esoteric sounds abound on New Jersey house outsider Joey Anderson's third full length opus 'Rainbow Doll', where he returns to Los Angeles via Berlin-based Avenue 66 for the first time since 2013 when he presented their inaugural release. It also happens to be the first album in four years by the Inimeg boss and his most personal work to date, where his emotional vocals can be heard atop deeply meditative jams like "Beside Me", and likewise on the woozy and knackered groove of "Ocean" accompanied by washes of live analogue synth riffs. Further hypnotism awaits on the bass-driven echo mania of "Live It" and the life-affirming elation of "Cindy" - being another fine example of Anderson's penchant for truly spiritual music. Highly recommended.

Fosas Limitadas (3:47)
Lux, Lumina (CC Crain remix) (4:42)
El Olivo (3:59)
Unificado (Pye Corner Audio remix) (7:57)
Review: Beguiling, intriguing, immersive and about as far from obsolete as you could ask for in an age when so much music seems happy to exist in a kind of pointless no man's land lacking anything like innovation, if not defined by total uselessness. Prepare to commend Lorelle, your new favourite psychedelic aural adventure, not to mention the much-loved London label Sonic Cathedral, if you're not already obsessed with it. There's more depth and substance to the four tracks offered here than many artists can manage in an album. '"Fosas Limitadas" has shades of Powell's earthier scuzz, "Lux, Lumina" is straight up hallucinatory fare, or at least CC Crain's remix - included here - fits that description. "El Olivo" is a tripped out odyssey that's at once beautiful and unnerving, while the closer, a Pye Corner Audio version of "Unificado" grows into a subtle but highly emotive wall of atmosphere over eight stunning minutes.

Unholy Elixir (5:03)
People's Faces (Streatham version) (3:42)
Review: Those who bought Kate Tempest's superb new album "The Book Of Traps and Lessons" should know "Holy Elixir", a track that caused a stir when she performed it at Glastonbury festival last summer. Here she delivers a radically reworked version called "Unholy Elixir", a triumphant fusion of alien-sounding synthesizer lines, booming sub-bass and off-kilter hip-hop breaks topped off with her distinctive spoken word vocals. Over on the flipside Tempest reworks another recent album track, "People's Faces", re-casting it as a yearning tribute to London neighbourhood Streatham in which her heavily accented spoken word vocals seem more pertinent and hard-hitting than ever.

Xiao Long Bao (5:41)
Review: Despite delivering two volumes in his ongoing "Disco Dubs" re-edit series on Friends & Relations, 2019 was a relatively quiet year for Alistair Gibbs AKA Nebraska. Here he begins 2020 in fine style with a cracking new outing on Heist Recordings. Title track "Y'miss Me Baby?" delivers a suitably strong start and see Gibbs wrap twinkling lead lines, rich electric piano chords, talkbox vocals and P-funk synths around a hazy jazz-funk bassline and unfussy dancefloor drums. Giovanni Damico riffs on the jazz-funk and P-funk influences further on his instrumental boogie style "Jam Mix". Elsewhere, "Dip & Flip" is an all-action, filter-heavy disco-house loop jam, while "Xiao Long Bao" is a warm, deep, humid and undeniably jazzy sample-house roller tailor made for sunny afternoons.

Review: From Angola via Belgium and Manchester, Nazar follows 2018's Hyperdub rough kuduro debut "Enclave" with this immense multi-faceted body of work that analyses the Angolan war of independence, its atrocities and effects on its displaced people and his family. From the portrait on the cover of his rebel general father to many of the samples and stories, Nazar paints an unnerving picture that ranges from the militant drum shots fired on "Diverted" to the eerie juxtaposition of "FIM-92 Stinger" where a surface-to-air missile launcher gives it name to one of the album's most soulful, touching moments. Elsewhere we hear voices of his family on "Mother", we're fired up with gritty, unapologetic universal question "Why" and left asking more questions on the fractured finale "End Of Guerrilla". Much deeper than an album, this is a document, musically, politically, emotionally. Nazar and Hyperdub have created something truly unique.

Review: The build up to this one has been notable. Back in 2016, Porridge Radio's "garden shed recorded" LP, "Rice, Pasta And Other Fillers" landed to critical acclaim if not a huge audience. That said, combined with a few impressive demos they have garnered a real following over the years, and as such their debut studio long form comes at a point when for many this lot feel less like a new band, and more of a secret weapon. There's a vast range of influences here, with both The Cranberries and Charli XCX cited in the release notes. Overall you might be more surprised at the latter than the former when you hear the work - it's born of a guitar world rather than electronic pop, with the track entitled "Pop Song" - actually a disparate and heartfelt swooning slice of melancholia - hitting that point right on the head. Exceptional DIY stuff.

Private Line (4:12)
Love Affair (4:26)
Review: This delightful two tracker lavishly recaptures an 80s boogie sound in such authentic fashion that you will be double checking if it's actually released this year. It is also a stunning debut from Joanna Rose, whose vocals are crystal clear and pure, and soar above twinning keys and basslines to die for. Disco, funk and soul are rarely distilled as perfectly as they are on "Private Line", a tune that is going to get any floor in a spin. While "Love Affair" slows down a touch, with big flutes and squelchy bass all demanding that you cut your finest shapes.

I Love You More (New vocal edit) (9:03)
I Love You More (instrumental edit) (7:50)
Review: Scalpel-wielding re-edit legend Danny Krivit has reworked one of his all-time favourites, Rene and Angela's 1981 boogie classic "I Love You More". He has previously reworked the track, but the edits here are brand new. On the A-side you'll find his fresh vocal extension and rearrangement, which naturally rolls out the killer groove - all liquid synth-bass, cascading lead lines, clipped guitars and ear-catching piano motifs - before unleashing the original's deliciously glassy-eyed and soulful vocal. Over on side B he's revisited his original instrumental re-edit, further emphasizing the cut glass strings, spacey synth solos and infectious groove. It's as loved-up as they come and arguably even better than his vocal take.

Review: Motherhood, or the run up to that life changing step and the emotions that come with it, is never far from "Birthmarks". Woods recorded the album while expecting, with the two unarguably inspiring urban surrounds of Galway, Ireland and Oslo, Norway, providing a backdrop to that process. Both cities are prime places for thoughtful moods, and in some ways it's possible to argue that has been distilled onto record here. An air of mystery pervades everything, as whispered lullabies join tearful string harmonies, drawing us in to places of depth and real soul searching. In many ways it's a sombre trip, in other ways a journey through calming hallucinatory otherness that you can't quite put your finger on but seems strangely familiar. Experimental avant-garde folk, downtempo naturalism and an exploration of disquiet and aural unknowns.

Review: This popular and on going edit series returns after two big instalments from J. Period. Now it is Amerigo at the helm and he pulls together an all-star league of funk, soul and hip hop giants, then rewires their musical DNA into new tribute tracks that are full of life and built from essential James Brown building blocks. Bob Marley is first to be stitched into "Who Is Mr Brown?", which becomes a lazy dub of the highest order. Elsewhere Busta Rhymes, Notorious BIG and Mobb Deep all lend their considerable vocal skills to "Sex Machine" and "Godfather Of Soul."

Review: Talk about calling a spade a spade. Bongo Joe have opted for a Ronseal approach to album titles with this compilation. If that reference means nothing let's just say it does exactly what it says on the tin. Various iterations of electronica, sometimes dark, in other moments really rather delightful, it's a vast - or at least 17 tracks - showcase of varied talent. 'Etudes' by Claudine Chirac could almost be part of a 1990s video game score (we're thinking more 'Final Fantasy' than 'Tekken'). Pete Philippe Weiss' 'Subway' punches with the unapologetic positivity of 1980s power pop. Opening number 'Untitled', by Andreas Hofer, is an uneasy, brooding mood setter that comes complete with reversed out vocals. D-Sire's 'Wintertime' is a slice of synth-y stepping stuff John Carpenter would be proud of (instrumentally at least). So much worth mentioning - such as stripped electro cut 'Rap Yourself' by Air Project - it's impossible not to find something to feel passionate about.

Those unfamiliar with the pair might be disappointed at our inability to signpost comparable acts, but trust us when we say their combination of electronic pop, blues, trip hop and - wait for it - operatics beguiles and captivates in equal measure. A sonic realm where things might feel uneasy for a second before the cumulative elements are shown to marry so well. In many ways, "Put The Shine On" is their most chart-friendly offering to date, but that might suggest a watering down of their quirks and oddness. Nothing could be further from the truth, but nonetheless tracks such as "Restless" should be destined for significant radio play, and "Lamb & The Wolf / Slow Down Sun Down" is universally adorable stuff.

Review: The folkloric cosmic disco scene of northern Italy in the early '90s serves as the inspiration for the Antinote's new compilation "Studiolo: The 90's Afro/Cosmic Era" compiled by Parisian DJ Ygal Ohayon. Pioneered by legends such as Daniele Baldelli and Beppe Loda, this collection of tracks features many highly sought after classics from the era, such as 1995's "Tantawina" by Roberto Righi aka Mamukata. This one bears a resemblance to In Aeternam Vale's "Dust Under Brightness" however the latter was released a couple of decades later. Elsewhere, there's the low-slung acid disco of Claudio Diva's "Funky Nephos" and the mandatory pan pipes sound (a signature) as heard on African Project's "Ethno Beat" and not to mention some of those chipmunk vocals ("Indien Summer") - another unintended trademark of the style. A young Austrian named Stefan Egger is said to have caught Baldelli play during his residency at the Cosmic Club in the seaside resort town of Rimini and had a life-affirming moment on the dancefloor. He brought the sound to his native Innsburck and created a scene of its own there. His contribution "Cosmic Esmeralda" (1994) is pure euphoria on a Belgian new beat vibe.
