Combo Guarajeo - "Alamo" (2:08)
Hermanos Vargas - "Oye Mulata" (3:23)
Review: For their latest release, Mexican reissue specialists Discodelic take us back to Alajuela, Costa Rica, in the mid 1970s, and the sweltering, cross-cultural fusion works of the Vargas brothers and their short-loved Combo Guarajeo. Our pick of an extremely strong pair is A-side 'Alamo', a sweet and jangling take on Latin funk blended with distinctive Guaguanco and psychedelic soul influences. It's humid, colourful and classy, and original copies of the record it first featured on are almost impossible to find. There's a more straightforward, central American take on Afro-Cuban music on side B, which we think - but have yet to confirm - has never previously been released. It, too, is a treat for the ears.

Front Office - "Wow" (2:14)
Holzer & Pure Love - "Pure Love" (3:06)
Review: Ximeno Records are among the cream of international rarities reissuers, moving at a steady pace to reproduce a large catalogue of old psych rock, funk, and disco oddities on 7" vinyl. Their usual game is to have two artists occupy a single slice of vinyl, one for each side. The trend continues on their latest here: ultra-obscure instrumental outfit Front Office debut their track 'Wow' on the A, plunging their breakbeats and guitars into walls of washy spin-noise. The B-side hears American greats Robert Holzer and Pure Love (William Kamarra) lay down mega-energetic love-kindling on the semi-eponymous track 'Pure Love'.

He was a key figure in 80s city pop and AOR and his iconic track 'Dream Is Alive' from the Earthian image album makes its vinyl debut and is full of The flip side features 'Yokaze,' another standout urban mellow tune that captures the smooth, soulful vibe of his work and is perfect for those close listen bar sessions or the gentle moments early in the evening.

Johnny Hammond - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Quasimode - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Alan Strani - "Tension Salsable" (edit) (4:58)
Review: Maledetta Discoteca closes out its year with this special blue vinyl featuring a mix of brilliant Italo disco artists. They all hail from Italy and Argentina and are editing originals that span disco, electro, proto-house and more. Hararis' 'Si No Pagan' is the first under the scalpel and is a funky cut with raw drums. Lance's 'Yo Quiero A Lucy' is a more slowed down and seductive sound with 80s synths, Marta Paradise's 'Calling' (edit) is a direct and sugar synth laced house stomper and Alan Strani's 'Tension Salsable' brings things to a closer with a nice stomping disco grove with mysterious synths and lush percussion.

Review: Standby for some read hot early 70s North Soul goodness on this vital Quentin Harris reissue. The 7" was first put out as a private press and its two tracks were recorded after Harris released his Statements album. This is the first ever vinyl reissue and is super limited to just 250 copies. 'Protect Me From Myself' rides a deep cut groove with silky bass and has big horn stabs next to some soul stirring vocal work. 'I'll Always Love You' on the flip then strips things further back to a heartbreaking soul sound with twirling stings and warm horns, lush backing vocals a sing along chords that will melt even the blackest of characters.

Only Two People In The Sea (2:29)
Love Steppin' (1:50)
Review: 'The Horizon Of Happiness' first made its way to vinyl in Japan in 1980 after being created by master musician Katsuhisa Hattori. 'Only Two People In The Sea' is super slow and seductive, steamy and sexual funk with a brilliantly lazy groove. Long held synth strings, melodic curlicues and rising chords all add layer upon layer of lushness that lives mind, body and spirit to the heavens. Flip it over for the fantastic 'Love Steppin' which is a more driven tune but one still packed with love and romance. The bass is to die for, the lead acoustic guitar really sings and the hints of retro 80s nostalgia really swells the heart.

Review: Jules Buckley is a Grammy award-winning composer, curator and conductor who has linked up with long time collaborative partners Chris Wheeler, Heritage Orchestra and percussion collective Ghost-Note for this lively new full length. The record has been two years in the making and pays homage to the pillars of hip hop and mainstays of the breaking scene, but with plenty of added flair. There are plenty of dance floor ready breaks, as well as more airy and upbeat soul groovers like the excellent 'Space Funk.' Though the backbones of these tunes follow familiar genres rules, the flair on top is what makes them so special.

Review: Joni Haastrup's classic, cosmic disco LP is among the best of the best in terms of Afrobeat. What is particularly special about it is its 1978 release date - this was miles ahead of everyone else at that stage of African disco music - and the fact that it was the only piece of music to be released under the artist's real name. There is not much we can say about this absolute gem of an album, apart from the fact that it should not be missing from your own shelves, or DJ bag, for that matter. On the latter point, these six tunes are perfect for just about any situation requiring a dance. This is top Afrobeat beat music in all its glory. NOT to be missed. Warmly recommended...

Originally signed to Westbound Records, which is famously home to Funkadelic and Ohio Players, the group recorded just two albums, and the second of those came on Capitol in 1984. Review: Johnny Hammond was a prolific organist, composer and multidisciplinary artist active throughout the USA for the majority of the 20th Century. By the time the lesser-known LP and meditation on devilish excess 'Gambler's Life' was released in 1974, Hammond's sound had grown unusually cacophonous and was noisy to a kind of perfection that could only be described as an acquired taste. That doesn't deter us, though: this reissue from Soul Brother carefully pays homage to the late great's 28th album, with the broken wonk of 'Rhodesian Thoroughfare', the voluptuous funk of 'Star Borne' and the melismatic virtuosity of 'Virgo Lady' all tempting us back towards the broad gate.

Review: Holy grail soul heads take note, as this highly sought after piece gets a much-needed repress. Michael Orr recorded Spread Love with Carey Harris in 1976, and it's been a prized totem for collectors ever since on the simple brilliance of the music. This is classic soul in the vein of Roy Ayers or perhaps Gil Scott Heron circa Pieces Of A Man - tender 70s musicianship with warmth in its bones and sincerity in its message. It's a record to keep you cosy on a cold Sunday, not least on outright ballads like 'Feelings' featuring Bernadine Mitchell on a powerful vocal turn. Don't miss out on the chance to grab this gem while it's here - with only 300 copies pressed it won't be around for long.

Review: Eddie Harris was an iconic American jazz musician who revolutionised the genre by introducing the electrically amplified saxophone. With a prolific career spanning over 50 albums, Harris seamlessly blended jazz with funk, earning Grammy Award nominations for two of his groundbreaking records. Among them, the 1983 release People Get Funny..s' stands out. Featuring tracks like 'People Get Funny When They Get A Little Money' and 'La Carnival' which exemplify his signature jazz-funk fusion with captivating vocals and scatting, it las has other gems like 'Silver Plated,' which showcase a more traditional jazz-hard-bop style. Accompanied by talented musicians like drummer Carl Burnett, electric pianist William S. Henderson III, and bassist Larry Gales, this limited edition release of People Get Funny... is pressed on translucent pink vinyl.

He pioneered this own spiritual jazz sound across several solo and collaborative albums (often with trombonist Phil Ranelin) and Organic Dream is one of his most loved and unrestrained jazz expressions. This is a special Japanese Edition reissue from P-Vibe and is a fine example of his left of centre approach, with mad synth sounds and found sounds, adding curious charm and atmosphere to his grooves. Some are dancers like the nimble rhythms of 'Love Juice' and some are more sentimental such as the smoochy 'A Green Meadow.'

Review: Here comes a special Japanese edition of Harvey Sutherland's superb Boy album. Since debuting in 2013, Mike Katz has released a lot of music under this alias, always flitting between interconnected styles (electronic disco, deep house, jazz-funk, nu-boogie, revivalist New Jersey garage and Italo-disco) without ever laying down an album of all-new music. Boy, then, is a significant milestone in the Melbourne producer's career and offers an exploration of what he calls "neurotic funk" - a boundary-blurring fusion of jammed-out analogue electronics and live instrumentation that draws on a multitude of musical styles without neatly sitting in any one pigeonhole.

He dropped his debut release via Stones Throw in 2008 and since then has put out four more albums and picked up plenty of critical support as well as radio plays across the world. For All Time is his fifth album and one that crosses even more musical boundaries than before with lyrics that explore "the complexities of love and the raw emotions that accompany it." It is dark, brooding, erotic and stylish with hints of 1920's jazz club to it. A great return. .

While he'd enjoyed modest success as a session musician, producer and vocalist, it would be his score for Shaft - a triumphant blend of dancefloor-friendly funk and soul, evocative downtempo moments, sweeping orchestration and rich, intricately composed musicality - that would turn Hayes into an internationally recognized star. 45 years after it was first recorded, Shaft still sounds superb, as this weighty double vinyl reissue - complete with MP3 download code - neatly proves. Review: This is a bold, progressive funk album from one of the genre's masters in Isaac Hayes. Although Hayes who was rooted in r&b was often overlooked in favour of prog-rock bands like Emerson, Lake and Palmer, his music was just as expansive and expressive across his career. This album served as the soundtrack for Hayes' first major film role and perfectly matches the gritty, exaggerated tone of the movie. Over time, its tracks were reimagined and sampled and influenced works from Geto Boys to Quentin Tarantino films, which has ensured it a lasting legacy in both cinema and music history.

Flying his own freak flag with George Clinton on the buttons and Bootsy on bass, Hazel gets to show off his reputation as one of the greatest funk guitarists of all time. From a classic cover of 'California Dreamin' to the epic, meandering 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)', this is the psych, rock-tilted side of the P-funk canon, which is no surprise from the man who defined 'Maggot Brain' with his signature wail. The label has subsequently released a number of sequels, but it's this original 2010 set - created by digging through archives of previously unreleased tracks laid down between 1971 and '74 - that remains the essential HE3 release. If you still need persuading to pick up this reissued version, we'd suggest checking the languid and sun-kissed West Coast jazz-funk of "Rapture Of The Deep", the high-octane, Clavinet-heavy soul madness of "Life Is A Tortured Love Affair", the Bob James style sweetness of "We All Have Our Own Lives" and the Sly and the Family Stone style break-diggers' delight that is "Easy Come Easy Go".

The label are also putting out another version on clear vinyl with a bonus 7" featuring some extra cuts, while this one just comes on limited heavyweight black wax with the original album cuts. The lesser-known and rather 'mythical' funk and soul outfit only penned seven cuts for this one but they sure made a splash with it. Members include Jimmy Soul, Ron Carr and John True and they have a tight funk sound as shown here with the steamy and sexy vocal whispers of the opener across a cover of a Barry White classic and more.

Review: Two albums deep, Karl Hector's troupe continue to join the dots between territories, decades and genres with hypnotic aplomb. A frenzy of Middle Eastern arrangements, densely weaved psychedelic motifs and super-tight instrumentation, each track spins a gorgeous hazy yarn. From the sunset serenade "Spirit Of Gine" to the fuzzier, off-kilter freneticism of "Transition T" via the overlapping melodies and yearning flutes of "Samai Thaqil" and the proggier, guitar-led "Nibunga", Unstraight Ahead carves a very clear path deep into the most unique, timeless pastures.

Review: US eight-piece Heliocentrics have long been regarded as talented musical mavericks - an exceptional live outfit whose freakish, psychedelic blend of influences results an intoxicating fusion of freestyle jazz, dub, funk, Afrobeat, hip-hop, post-punk disco and cinematic atmospherics. This fourth full-length is arguably their strongest yet, thanks principally to their experimental, no-holds barred approach. Out-there, atmospheric and inventive throughout, 13 Degrees of Reality sounds like an unlikely jam session between Sun Ra, Material, Ennio Morricone, John Carpenter and early Cinematic Orchestra. There can be no better praise than that.

Review: "Holderlin's Traum" is the debut album from the legendary German folk outfit. This is another sample of Dieter Dierks talent for turning otherwise average folk albums into something else. This Wah Wah release is a German progressive folk master opus which took hints from medieval and classical music and reworked them into something very special and unique.

Review: Chicago-native Cecil Lyde's Home Boy And The C.O.L. album is often said to be his standout work. It dropped back in 1984 with his Home Boy group and was a swift follow up to 1982's self titled debut. Earlier works were defined by a lovely lo-fi aesthetic while this record goes big right for the off with an eight minute epic to kick off. 80s electro-funk then defines much of the rest of it with all sorts of big hits along the way. It makes for a luxurious listen with some self-reflective tunes like the ballad 'I Don't Want To Be A Movie Star,' and then some tension building and passionate vocal harmonies. This reissue comes a limited edition LP with obi-strip.

Review: American music obsessive and archivist Jerome Derradji's Past Due Records label has got a fine compilation on its hands here. It gathers upside of the very best sounds that San Antonio-based funk band Horizon ever put out. They had a hardcore and devoted local following in the early 89s and secured a number of big radio hits. They were all released on 7"s that you will struggle to ever track down. Thankfully, each one gets assembled here across four fantastic sides of vinyl. What's more, no fewer than ten previously unreleased tracks also make the cut. These are authentic lo-fi funk gems with powerful rhythm sections and seductive vocal sounds.

Review: Here comes the latest reissue of this enduring classic. The beautiful South Pacific sea is the overriding theme for what is a hard to find album from Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki and Tatsuro Yamashita. It is a perfect fusion of early electronics and exotic sounds that instantly transport you to the ocean in question. Standout cut 'Cosmic Surfing', which was later included on the debut album from YMO, Yellow Magic Orchestra, appears for the first time on this album. This is a long-awaited reissue from Light in the Attic and as ever with this are, it has been mastered beautifully, presented perfectly on a fitting clear blue vinyl and even includes a poster.

Review: Soul Jazz are releasing this new album that mixes deep percussive African rhythms and Afro- Jazz with elements of hip-hop and electronica recorded in Los Angeles, California. Produced by West Coast left-field hip-hop/electronic/jazz artist Carlos Nino aka Ammon Contact, the album features Adam Rudolph, Hamid Drake and Brahim Fribgane as well as special guest and deep jazz legend Yusef Lateef. Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake have between them played and recorded with Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Jah Wobble, Don Cherry and many more. With previous releases on Soul Jazz Records (Beautiful) and Scott Heren's (Prefuse 73) Eastern Developments label, Hu Vibrational's deep spiritual music draws on the links between Africa, Jazz music and avant-garde hip-hop. Adam Rudolph co-founded the Mandingo Griot Society and has been working together for over recent years as musical partner to the great Yusef Lateef. He also runs the Go: Organic Orchestra, a 22 piece percussion group. Carlos Nino (aka Ammon Contact) has had releases on Ninja Tune, Soul Jazz Records, Eastern Development and Plug Research. As well as being an integral part of Hu Vibrational he has also produced Dwight Trible and The Life Force Trio, Build An Ark and the Go: Organic Orchestra.

Review: Crippled Dick Hot Wax invites for a dance with the nearly lost recordings, also been soundtrack for Jess Franco's cult films "Vampyros Lesbos", "She Kills In Ecstasy" and the "The Devil Came From Akasava", Crippled Dick Hot Wax presents a very special and delicious re-release: The songs from the hard to find LPs "Psychedelic Dance Party" and "Sexadelic" were written in 1969 and released in 1970. They were composed by Manfred Hubler and Siegfried Schwab. Sexadelic Dance Party is a compilation with the best titles. The musical background placed within red-light swing, sleazy psychedelic and strip ballads. Various wild parties around the soundtrack were celebrated after the popular release in 1995. The parties took place in many places in Germany and USA and the cult about the Jess Franco movie increased.

Review: American Bobbi Humphrey is one of the most well loved jazz flautists. She turned out plenty of vibrant albums, none less so than this, Fancy Dancer, which was her fifth. It came on Blue Note in 1975 and is full of all killer no filler gold. It also saw her, along with producers the Mizell Brothers aka Larry and Fonce, come up with a fresh new largely instrumental funk sound. Weaving in everything from world music to soul-jazz to club music to pop, it's a widescreen sound that is packed with uplifting flute from Humphrey and lush production that reveals something new with each listen.

Review: Brazilian artist Hyldon's 1981 album 'Sabor De Amor' is a Latin classic that is well overdue this reissue by Jazzybelle Records. It was the fourth from the soul man, singer and instrumentalist who was, with equally celebrated peers Tim Maia and Cassiano, at the very heart of the Brazilian soul revolution of 70s. This may be his most consistent album with its more than accomplished backing by Azymuth musicians including Alexandre Malheiros on bass, drums from Ivan "Mamao" Conti and Hammond jams from Sergio Carvalho amongst others. The bass is funky, the arrangements are sophisticated and full of sun with noodling jazz melodies and Portuguese vocals all oozing summer magic. From mellow moments like the title cut to more dazzling and upbeat dancers like 'Amor Na Terra Do Berimbau' this isa joyous listen.

Review: Oh yes, it's the fourth edition of Tramp's mighty Feeling Nice series, proudly presented by Daniel Wanders and Hermann Jahn. The duo are as persistent as they are talented at compiling music series with a socio-political edge, always hinting at some sort of cultural tension. With this new piece of work, they've decided to showcase the deeper side of funk, the sort you wouldn't have found on Top Of The Pops. More than anything, this is a marvellous collector's item, filled with tunes from peeps like Mr Clean & The Cleansers, Jim Pipkin, Al Sinclair, and many other artists from the late 60s who were not as fortunate in their domination of the mainstream as other singers and producers. A mighty fun pack for any serious funk enthusiast.
