Midnight Riot Volume 9
Cat: MRV 011. Rel: 23 Sep 15
Aashton - "Pride" (6:13)
Peza - "Black Gold" (6:23)
Fabiolous Barker - "The Paradise" (6:37)
Rayko - "The Jam" (5:55)
Review: Yam Who?'s Midnight Riot is back with another volume of funky, party starting edits, so come and get your fix. Aashton's "Pride" samples the diva vocals of you know who on this smooth and soulful number. Peza's "Black Gold" is pure classic disco, reminiscent of Salsoul, possibly? Fabiolous Barker's "The Paradise" has that retro and Balearic vibe that fans of labels like Love On The Rocks and Efficient Space will certainly dig. "The Jam" by Rayko is a re-edit of you guessed it: Technotronic's "Pump Up The Jam".

Rusty (4:02)
Start The Engine (5:15)
Irradia (4:07)
Slightly Mad (4:31)
Review: In recent years, Daniel Baldelli's original productions have tended towards the funkier end of the cosmic disco spectrum. That's certainly what you get here, as the Afro-cosmic pioneer once again joins forces with regular studio partner Marco Dionigi. Of course, there are nod to the chugging, arpeggio-heavy world of Italo-disco - see the Balearic disco dreaminess of "Irradia" and cosmic funk-rock shuffle of "Slightly Mad" - but even these mind-altering journeys come blessed with crackling funk guitars and tasty Clavinet sounds. Our picks are opener "Rusty", a bassline-driven, funk-fuelled Idjut Boys style dub disco number, and the pleasingly percussive, flash-fried funk of "Start The Engine".

Bendy & Hristo - "Love Contest" (Bendy & Hristo edit)
Free Association - "Tablets Of Love" (Free Association version)
Review: Friendly Monster is a new label that's so far only released the one record, a three-track various artist 12". They've done the same for their second offering, only giving Bendy & Hristo and Free Association a side of real estate each. Combine elements of New York disco with new wave, no wave, minimal wave, whatever wave, and Bendy & Hristo's own edit to their track "Love Contest" has all the makings of a swooning floor filler. Meanwhile the B-side has more of an Arthur Russell element to it, with flashes of Queen, indie rock, rock and cosmic disco mixed in. Two tough and sensual cuts on the one record.

It's So Good To Know

Best Friend Around - "It's So Good To Know" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:36)
Foster Jackson Group - "Feel The Spirit" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:10)
Review: Given his reputation as Japan's "king of digging", you'll be unsurprised to learn that DJ Muro's latest scalpel-style Diguma Edits are of thoroughly obscure, hard-to-find disco cuts. For example, an original copy of Best Friend Around's hard to find modern soul-goes-disco number 'It's So Good to Know' - a warming and glassy-eyed cut full of hazy grooves, super-sweet vocals and spacey synth sounds - would cost you hundreds of pounds; Muro's shortened, light-touch edit seems a bargain at a fraction of the cost. Foaster Jackon Group's similarly rare 'Feel the Spirit', a carnival-ready slab of Brazilian influenced jazz-funk/disco-funk fusion, is given the Muro touch on the flip, with equally as exemplary results.

Caffeine Is My Passion (5:54)
Review: BPlan & Fab_o made a fine debut on their own Caffee Ciorretto Edits label and now they follow it up with another glistening four tracker. 'Santos' is the bright and breezy opener with a rubbery grove and retro-future chords, then 'Your Coffee' sinks into a more freewheeling, languid groove tinged with Afro exoticism and a steamy vocal. The timeless throwback vibes continue on 'Passione Italiana', another sensuous disco stomper that brings some old school cool, and lastly 'Caffeine Is My Passion' is a funky workout with big hits and cosmic arps racing through the stars.

Sweet Brasil (5:41)
Aroma Club (6:44)
Arabica Selection (6:46)
West Africa (6:32)
Review: A new week, a new edits label, this time from BPlan & Fab_o. It kicks off in fantastic fashion with four edits that will boost your spot no end. There is loose and jumbled afro-disco on "Sweet Brasil" and then stripped back disco-house loops a la early DJ Sneak on "Aroma Club". The flip side again leans on afro for its sunny vibes with "Arabica Selection" and it might be that the best is saved until last. "West Africa" is built on funky bass riffs, with flailing percussion, chunky drums and vocal chants that will lock in any crowd.

Chicco Reale (6:16)
Midnight Espresso (6:11)
Review: BPlan & Fab_o return to their own imprint with a new record that is packed with heat. This latest chapter is another vibrant one with two dance floor jams on the a-side. 'Afro Disco' does exactly what it says on the tin with funky to spare and lovely compelling rhythms topped by a great vocal. 'Discoffee' is then a horn laced disco cut with pumping drum work and big vocals. 'Chicco Reale' is more smooth and seductive but just a ready for the club and 'Midnight Espresso' then cuts loose on more richly musical disco grooves.

Review: Disco don Dimitri From Paris and the always glossy Glitterbox label is a perfect coming together as this new single proves. It has a cliched title but the music excuses that - it's pure timeless joy, with feel good vocals, big shiny strings and a knotted, funky bassline that cannot fail but ignore the floor. The musicianship is second to none on the extended disco mix and that areas on through all versions. There's the big full take, the more paired back club dub and a cappella, and all are dynamite.

Dirty Channels - "Watchin Out" (vs Danny Russel) (5:59)
Frazelle - "Today Is the Day (Linkwood Chop)" (5:18)
Review: Athens Of The North embrace the festival season with two exceptional floor-focussed edits of previous releases they've liberated from dusty crates and damp basements. Taking the lead on the A we have the most upbeat cut AOTN have ever put out as Dirty Channels give bang for you buck with an uptempo jacking twist on Split Decision Band's "Watchin Out". Meanwhile on the B Frazelle's "Today Is The Day" is given just a little DJ friendly tweakery with more spacious and on-grid drum work. An exciting development from the Edinburgh label, let's hope we see the AOTN logo on 12" again soon.

Italian Dance Wave Disco Tre
Cat: SLOMO 021. Rel: 03 Dec 15
Discodromo - "A Come Andromeda" (7:11)
Fratelli Riviera - "Falling" (4:54)
DJ Rocca - "Backery's Track" (5:18)
Le Macchine - "Greg" (6:14)
Review: Slo Motion's Italian Dance Wave series was initiated earlier in the year, primarily to showcase "Italian artists who make music with an Italian flavour". There's naturally much to admire on this third volume, from the opening shuffle of Discodromo's stylish, mascara-clad New Wave disco jam "A Come Andromeda", to the cheery Italo-disco revivalism-meets-80s electro flex of DJ Rocca's "Backery's Track". The dancefloor highlight is undoubtedly the surging, darkroom Italo-disco throb of Le Macchine's filthy "Greg", though you'll find little as deep, dreamy and beguiling as Fratelli Riviera's wonderful "Greg". Either way, it's a fine collection of tracks.

A Reason For Leaving (Italo vocal remix) (5:23)
Review: Having worked together previously with Dimitri From Paris, Rocca teams up with iconic Italo singer Fred Ventura once again for a sparkling slice of dramatic synth-sizzled disco pop. Remix-wise NOIA lay down a chugging, vocoder-laden DFA-style dubby disco workout and Italoconnection repurpose every element to create a whole new track that surges with hookiness and a slightly repitched vocal. Finally we hit Rocca's new Italo version of the aforesaid Dimitri hook-up "A Reason For Living". Spacey.

FSQ - "Shaking My Damn Head" (feat Dolette McDonald) (4:47)
Perdu - "Cece" (6:32)
South Beach Recycling - "Bongo Man" (5:00)
Review: Midnight Riot's recently-released Riot In Lagos compilation paid tribute - in some style, we should add - to the enduring influence of African music on contemporary dance culture. This sampler 12" gathers together four of the most sought-after cuts from the digital-only set. Drop Out Orchestra kick things off with the fuzzy guitars, glistening solos, relentless handclaps and bongo-heavy drum rhythms of Candido tribute "Jin Go La", before FSQ deftly fuse Afro-disco and electrofunk on dancefloor stomper "Shaking My Damn Head". On the flip you'll find the breezy, Balearic-influenced Afro-disco fluidity of Perdu's "Cece", and the sun-kissed juju business of South Beach Recycling's fabulous "Bongo Man".

Skitcut - "Zaletaet Na Acid" (5:17)
Funkyjaws - "Acid Circus" (6:22)
Eddie C - "Dysk Dzokej On Acid" (3:54)
Review: Craft Music's taste in sizzling hot party music is absolutely confirmed as razor sharp with this third instalment of edits and re-rubs with a twist. Far from vanilla re-arrangements, these re-versions get fruity with the source material and on Good For Dance there's a particular emphasis on acid. First up Scruscru & Aman Po-Kaifu get right down and dirty with Nigerian classic 'Salem' by The Funkees, whipping up a veritable storm with 'Acid Salam'. Next up Skitcut gets into a serious stomp laden with wriggling 303 action on 'Zaletaet Na Acid', and Funkyjaws has some fun weaving slamming claps and nimble bleeps into the brassy source material for 'Acid Circus'. Eddie C rounds things off with a proper rubbery acid tweaker which slips in smooth on 'Dysk Dzokej On Acid'. Classy stuff, and whole heaps of fun for those who love acid, those who love disco, and those who love both.

Review: Mushroom Pillow is on a proud and so far successful mission to bring back Latin American music from the 60s-80s via its Relatin project. it's all about mixing up the traditional and the modern and putting fresh spins on what went before. Many of the originals they look to have gone unnoticed the first time round and that's the case here as Franc Moody adds his own twist to Elia & Elizabeth's 'Alegria.' His remix is a sympathetic one that gets the hips swinging over fat and funky disco bass and beneath the sunny Latin vocals. He strips them away on the instrumental version on the flip.

Review: More create digging porn wax from Perugia's most respected selector Fabio Calzolari as he digs through some of his finest finds and shares them with the world. Four cuts in total, each one hits the spot; "Fever" is all glammed up and front of the queue with its chugging guitars and lolloping pianos and falsettos, "Don Fulgenzio" is vintage Italian sing-along disco funk, "Arucu" is loaded with cosmic flurries and sleazy guitars while "Airton" closes the show as it pushes us deep into Sao Paulo with its hypnotic hip-shaking filtered relentlessness.

Loffelkinder
Gropiusstadt
Morgengrau
Review: Out on his own Aube Records, Roland Sebastian Faber takes a step back into time with this EP and conjures up three magical cosmic disco tunes that put many modern synth-pop producers to shame. Opener Loffelkinder has an authentic spaced out sound among it's guitars, drums and enveloped synths that instantly remind of early 80's Giorgio Moroder and a host of other maverick producers. It's as funky as it is grandiose, with tight drums and bubbly synths underpinning some wild theramin action and some nifty key changes along the journey.

Gropiusstadt's brassy arpeggio's are instantly familiar to anyone with a keen ear for experimental late-70's production and the addition of smooth bluesy guitars just makes it more intriguing! Not only does Faber get the sounds right, he also gets the melodies and arrangements bang on too, creating something that's definitely retro yet also something that makes perfect sense in 2010. Morgengrau is the most downbeat of the three tunes up for grabs and also the one that sounds most contemporary, as gurgling synths rise up and down over the chorus with dramatic effect. These are too well-crafted and unusual to ignore, and they come highly recommended to anyone with an appreciation for cosmic past and present.

As usual he brings psyched-out sounds, flying saucer synths and a deep cut drum chug on 'Pathfinder Theme' that cannot help but lock you in firmly and mesmerise you for the duration. Review: Stories of Prison sees Timothy J Fairplay returns to Emotional Response having helped shape the identity of the label in it's infancy with the release of Somebody, Somewhere back in 2012. A lot of music has come from both artist and label since then, with Fairplay's reputation as a solo artist fully established thanks to releases on a myriad of labels. Stories of Prison is a mini LP rich in the musical intensity Fairplay has instilled in all his music to date, yet there is a daring sense of diversity at play too. From the effervescent dubbed out house toughness of opening track "The Quay", Fairplay veers into subaquatic breakbeat, deep synth Love From Outer Space chuggers, and other late night sonic treats.

Review: The 5th release from Rothmans pays homage to legendary Argentinean defender Alberto Tarrantini and to mark this 5th release Rothmans have provided a team sheet to rival even that infamous 1982 World Cup squad. First up we have a welcome return to the label from Timothy J Fairplay who featured back alongside Toni Schumacher at the start of the year. This time around he brings us some spaced out Chicago flavour in the guise of 'The Third Season'. On the Flip side we have a welcome addition to the Rothmans squad in Max Essa, and the Tokyo resident brings us nothing but silky moves with a dark taste of the Orient with his aptly named "Stereoscapledmysexpool". Coming up the flanks we have tracks from Al Gobi and Tommy Walker 3 who bring some dark deep spacey vibes with wacked out basslines that really bring this 5th release to the boil!

Review: There's scant information to be found online about the producer (or producers) behind the Fake Love project. So what's on offer? Well, the A-side is a sleazy, tongue-in-cheek affair. It appears to be a re-edit of an obscure European disco tune that wraps breathy vocals, spacey electronics and raw Italo-disco touches around a Moroder style bassline eerily reminiscent of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love". It's curious and eccentric, but also really rather good. Turn to the flipside for more sci-fi, Euro-disco action, where fizzing, stargazing synthesizer motifs and bustling drum fills ride another heavy arpeggio-style groove. Muscular and leather-bound, it sounds like the sort of obscurity you'd hear at Cocktail D'Amore's legendary Berlin parties.

Review: Still mysterious, obscure and now even harder to decipher any actual facts due to the omnipotence of BTS, Fake Love hit their sixth volume of obscure edits since launching earlier this year. Once again it's a full cuddle of shades and flavours. "Track One" leads with more sleazy disco action, all slippery and blessed with a classic 80s flyboy rap, "Track Two" takes us deep into the heart of Lagos circa 74 where vital afro horns are laced over a fully primed disco groove, "Track Three" winds up this particular edition with a little Amazonian magic. Dust off those air pipes, you're going to need them...

Review: In 1977, Libyan musician Ahmed Fakroun flew to Milan to record some new material. The results were showcased on a pair of 7" singles, the most sought-after of which is being given the reissue treatment by Italy's Groovin label. The real winner here is "Nisyan", an Arabic interpretation of blue-eyed soul that fixes a baggy, sun-kissed sensibility, ear-catching Moog solos and a killer groove. "La Ya-Hob" is, if anything, even baggier and dreamier, with Fakroun delivering touchy-feely vocals over exotic, Middle Eastern synthesizer lines and a rolling, soft touch jazz-funk groove. Both cuts are equally breezy and jaunty, lingering in the memory for hours after each rotation.

Review: Working with its sister label OST Recordings, Acid Jazz releases a new version of 'Family Tree' by Family Tree, on a smart-looking label based on the look of the original's Ananda label. For the first time since 1975, this new reissue comes with the Kevin Beamish Disco version and a shorter disco mix, as was initially compiled. Handcrafted by 'I Specialize In Love' hitmaker Sharon Brown and her group Family Tree, this eponymous disco-funk sheller is an unpolished study of musicianship above overproduction; the drums are dynamic and dry, lending ample space to Sharon's nostalgic familial reminiscences.

Hooked On Your Love (John Morales unreleased edit) (8:13)
Review: Serious Philly boogie business: In 1979 the Aleem brothers teamed up with serial hit maker Leroy Burgess for this outstanding bass slapping floor burner. Listen closely and you'll hear a young Luther Vandross on backing vocals as the twins bounce off each other with their signature high ranges. Meanwhile on the B we have a previously unreleased edit from one of the most vital, direction shaping remixers of the time; John Morales. Expect nothing but 8 minutes of pure disco bliss. We're hooked on this!
