00AM 004
00AM 004 (12")
Cat: 00AM 004. Rel: 08 Dec 20
  1. Alfredo92 - "Tente Hjul" (DJ Fett Birger XB3711 F3 remix) (4:23)
  2. Fantastic Man - "On The Run" (5:54)
  3. ESB - "Sequential Dub" (6:44)
  4. 2wo2imes - "Immune" (6:40)
Review: With previous appearances from talents such as D. Tiffany, Iron Curtis and Priori, Canadian label 00:AM bring you their fourth various artists compilation. On the A side of 00AM 004, they roped in two artists that they've have had the pleasure of hosting in Montreal over the past couple years: the inimitable DJ Fett Burger, who gives Copenhagen's Alfredo92 (Axces) a woozy slo-mo acid rework of his 'Tente Hjul' (XB3711 F3 Remix). This one is perfect tackle for getting weird at the afterhours. On the flip it's clearly more of a dub techno affair, and where this EP really got us moving and grooving: Vancouver's Elan Benaroch aka ESB with the rolling and hypnotic "Sequential Dub", followed by the glacial and cavernous thump of "Immune" by 2wo2imes taking you deeper into the Quebec winter frost.

Dedictated To Uwe
  1. Herzogen (5:06)
  2. Vondekloties (5:06)
Review: Cedric Dewkowski and Felix Reifenberg have long been associated with Frankfurt collective Hardworksoftdrink, with the pair's 2017 collaborative full-length L'Album still the only LP that the label has released to date. Typically, the artistic imprint has not offered up much information about Dedicated to Uwe, their latest joint 12". Regardless, it's well worth a listen thanks to the pair's love of far-sighted synth sounds and firm grasp of mood and melody. A-side 'Herzogen' is particularly enjoyable, with the duo peppering a gentle electro rhythm with sun-bright keyboard stabs, squelchy acid bass, starry chords and cheerful melodies. There's a similar blend of sounds at play on flipside 'Vondekloties', which reminded us a little of the colourful, retro-futurist IDM of Birmingham-based synthesizer fetishists Plone.

  1. Blyga Violer (5:04)
  2. Kolatorsk (5:25)
  3. Svit & Sprit (7:44)
Review: There is little to nothing that we know about the enigmatic Facket Strejkar, but what we're hearing is certainly placing the producer firmly onto our radars. Coming through on the fiery Varvet imprint, out of Germany, this is surely the best amalgamation of electro and dubstep that is currently on the scene, and we expect plenty of imitators to come busting through real soon. "Blyga Violer" is a tough, sharp-edged electro killer with undeniably UK-style bass at its core, while "Kolatorsk" launches a shape-shifting techno bullet styled on something utterly sci-fi, and the flip's "Svit & Sprit" provides us with a mean, heavy-weighted bit of industrial techno for the floor. Revenge Fantasy (feat Scientific Dreamz Of U, Alessandro Parisi, Perseus Traxx & Antenna mixes)
  1. Stories Of Prison (Scientific Dreamz Of U remix)
  2. Aim For The Yellow Sector (Alessandro Parisi remix)
  3. Saco Bay (Perseus Traxx remix)
  4. Night Ferry (Antenna remix)
Review: While they may have landed a fair while ago, it's great to see Emotional Response revisit Timothy J Fairplay's crucial early EPs with an absolutely on point remix package. Scientific Dreamz Of U brings his distinctive signal chain to "Stories Of Prison", using grinding synths and some snaking broken beats to create an early 90s trance mood to die for. Alessandro Parisi keeps things on a distinctly new wave tip for "Aim For The Yellow Sector", and Perseus Traxx brings a bold set of machine beats and technicolour synths to "Saco Bay". Antenna finishes the EP off by creating a winsome, wavey version of "Night Ferry" for sensitive souls to do the robot to.

Rolling Dutch
Rolling Dutch (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VV 027. Rel: 16 Oct 17
  1. Rolling Dutch
  2. Rave On Plastic
Review: Valcrond Video continues its devilish run of form with this new single from Fallbeil, a project that has previously been spotted on New York Haunted, Return To Disorder and Mannequin. That should give you an idea of the kind of deviant sonics we're dealing with here, skirting around industrial, electro and techno with limber and dirty hardware jams for the sinister dancefloor. "Rolling Dutch" clearly nods towards The Hague way of doing things, all eerie pads, gnarly acid lines and rasping drums, while on the flip side "Rave On Plastic" pushes the bubbling monosynth action to the front of the mix.

Review: "Grey Skies In A Dear Green Place" is the debut Dark Entries release from Fear-E aka Glasgow's Scott McKay. It comes after 10 years of hard hitting DJ sets and productions on labels like Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and is packed from to back with rib-rattling, foundation-shaking techno. There are raw jack tracks like "Acid Conversion 5", deep but frenzied bangers like "Craig's Wee Sweet Shop" and mechanical melodic explorations like "Approach It Like A '90s DnB Banger". There's even a bit of hyper speed electro in closer "The Mouth From The South" that shows another equally effective side to McKay's sound.

Pourquoi
Pourquoi (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PU 08. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Pourquoi (feat Queenie On vocals)
  2. Draw The Line
  3. Line Drawn
Review: Pleasure Unit is doing a damn fine job building up a catalogue of discoid deviance from the likes of Skatebard, Lunar Concept and Loose Change, and now it's the turn of debutant project Field Of Dreams to lay down some 80s-tinged grooves for the smoother kind of dancefloor. "Pourquoi" features Queenie, and it shows off the individual heritage the two producers in Field Of Dreams have (one was in 90s chart toppers D:ream no less), all plush chords and slinky grooves with an alluring French vocal thread coursing through the middle. "Draw The Line" is a more synth-rich affair that leans towards the moodier end of acid-tinged disco, and then "Line Drawn" drifts out into Balearic boogie of a dubby nature, providing plenty of variation for the warm up or melt down dancefloor.

Review: Melbourne-based imprint LKR Records, formerly known as Lou Karsh Rhythms, return with an impressive various artist compilation here. "Exertion VA II" reaches far and wide to compile the forward thinking sounds of six great local producers, touching on the experimental but functional pocket of electro: as heard on fierce bass-driven sci-fi jams like Hymns' "Out Of The Head Into The Body", A-Sim's "Express Yourself", to rolling breakbeat action courtesy of Sputnik One ("Isolator"), junglist riddims (ANSV's "Rainstorm") and even some experimental fare by Fingers Of God and Percy Silicon.

Review: Lustwerk Music presents a mysterious new entity known simply as The Fock. With little to no background information, this record stakes its own claim within the Galcher-verse by offering up a range of mixes of "Shat Pop." The "Saldes Mix" is a proper immersion heater of cerebral techno, while the nervy, stomping "Flood1 Remix" is credited to White Material regular Young Male. The "Electro Mix" has a squelchy, boogie-inflected palette offset by woozy atmospherics, and the "Ambient Mix" unsurprisingly does away with the drums and drifts in limbo with a disembodied tannoy announcement for company.

Review: After releases for Discos Capablanca and Moon Glyth, Minneapolis collective Food Pyramid align with Especial for a remix EP based around "Oh Mercy", a track from their 2012 album Mango Sunrise. Apparently a long term favourite of label boss Stuart Leath, the warped breakbeat jam-fusion of the original is ripe for reinvention and gets the remix treatment from Especial in-house team Apophenia, Inhalt and Jamie Paton. It's the full on italo pumper remix from San Francisco's Inhalt that really impresses too, with Especial right to compare it to Timmy Regisford classic remix of "Rules To Survive" by NOIA.

Review: After first emerging in 2018, hitherto unknown London name The Forgotten Man returns for a second EP on their own noctu recordings, delving into the arcane language of intricate machine soul spanning the deeper end of techno and electro. The EP opens up with "Pulser", an uplifting, acid tinged 4/4 jam with resplendent synth work spilling out of every pore. "Sky Birds Of Ki" takes a more broken rhythm template, but keeps the effervescent melodic content squarely in the foreground. "Beyond Sector 9" takes things cool and intricate, capturing a little of the magic you'd expect from classic Metamatics in the process.

Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Fresh indeed.

Review: Aside from a few early EPs by the likes of Sven Weiseman or Nyra, among others, the Freund Der Familie imprint, run out of Berlin, has mainly featured the label's two head honchos, Klaus Rakete and Mirko Hunger. The experienced duo return to our shelves with the sublime sounds of "CRM (radio mix)", a slow but rich house nugget with a dubwise techno aesthetic, followed by "NML" and its cavernous folds of sound, along with the more break-friendly dispositions of "PRS", the EP's electro swinger.

Review: 21 years after delivering his first 12" under the now familiar Future Beat Alliance alias, electro and techno purist Matthew Puffett is still going strong. Having released a brilliant new album at the tail end of last year, he's decided to take us back to the early days of his career via a reissue of debut EP Mode 2. Despite being more than two decades old, the material still sounds thrillingly fresh. Check, for example, the Drexciya-on-the-moon brilliance of ambient electro shuffler "Mode 2", the bubby, B12 style IDM of "Violatile Memory" and the enveloping dreaminess of Motor City techno bubbler "Eectric Blues". Arguably best of all, though, is "Deep Enuff", an alternately rubbery and spacey chunk of fizzing electro that remains one of Puffett's most endearing creations.

The veteran British producer has released on top labels such as Delsin, Versatile, Rush Hour and Ferox, in addition to working with James Lavelle on his UNKLE project and composing soundtracks for major film projects over his lengthy career. Review: Fatdog Records returns after a break, offering contributions from 3 artists new to the label - The Rutan, Tom Mc Connell and Mark Hand. FDR003 offers a development from the deep house template on the last EP, this time taking us further into deeper Detroit territories. Mark Hand offers us Drexciyan techno in the form of 'Cold Feet'. The Rutan's 'Fable' sits somewhere between Vakula and some of Henrik Schwarz's earlier dub-house experiments, while Fat Dog takes us to the murky back alleys of his mind with 'Jaffa Cakes'. Finally Tom Mc.Connell's 'Juniper' takes us into wonkier groove Rhodes stylings which rounds off the EP very nicely indeed. Review: (Emotional) Especial heralds its 30th release with a killer package from an all-star cast that takes in label regulars and newcomers alike. The vibe starts heated and heavy with modern acid champ Roy Of The Ravers taking a blunt instrument or two to Junior Fairplay's "End Of Love," firing off the kind of bludgeoning b-line and fizzing drums that makes his direct approach to the dancefloor so potent. It's somewhat surprising to see Freeform Five pop up on this 12", but Jamie Paton's remix of "Throwing Stones" sounds utterly natural in the habitat - a brooding, simmering trip shot through with noirish synths. Kris Baha gets busy with Red Axes' "Waiting For A Surprise," twisting out an exotic bubbler perfect for the low tempo chugging crowd, and then Bal5000 wraps things up with the gorgeous electro-disco delights of "Kids".

  3. Das Ding - "Analog Devices" (6:54)
  4. VCS2600 - "Modular Deivce" (4:29)
Review: The tenth missive on Vortex Traks is full to bursting with tasty treats. As with many of the Berlin-based imprint's previous outings, it's a multi-artist affair. Marshall Applewhite kicks things off via the deep electro/dusty IDM fusion of "Better Do Not", where eight-bit electronics and undulating acid-style motifs rise above a crunchy beat, before Forehard attempts to batter dancefloors into submission via the full-throttle, Klakson-style Rotterdam electro filth of "Rhythm Device". Das Ding invites us to party in deep space via the high-tempo beats and swirling, some would say psychedelic electronics of "Analog Devices", before VCS2600 serves up some seriously punchy, acid-fired electro ("Modular Device").

HEARLUCINATE 002 (Bum Jump/Tushy mix)
Cat: HEARLUCINATE 002. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. Ron Obvious - "Tugging" (Bum Jump mix)
  2. Ron Obvious - "Elixic 3"
  3. Tristan Da Cunha - "Bass Penetration" (Tushy dub)
  4. Freakenstein - "Thafonk"
Review: The second drop on Hearlucinate comes correct with some more of that nasty party-starting tackle you want to make sure you're packing in your utility belt. The 'Bum Jump' mix of Ron Obvious' 'Tugging' kicks off the A side with a cheeky swing, bendy acid line and nimble organ licks to give you a loose and lively 90s flavour, which carries on through to the break-speckled acid funker 'Elixic 3'. On the B side, Tristan Da Cunha gets locked into a tunnelling tech house shuffle with plenty of ruff n' tuff attitude on the 'Tushy Dub' of 'Bass Penetration'. Then Da Cunha dons his Freakenstein alias to slap down the body-poppin', bleep-tastic electro funk of 'Thafonk' for all the B-girls and B-boys.

Hypnotic Mindscapes Vol 1
  1. TRO - "Meese En Garde" (5:19)
  2. Fauna Extinta - "Window For Change" (6:07)
  3. Chicaiza - "Andes Culprit" (5:55)
  4. Payphone - "Where It Hertz" (5:46)
Review: Long-standing Toronto crew Hypnotic Mindscapes smash through the lockdown blues with the launch of a brand new vinyl label. Representing a cosmic, club-focused sound that sits between electro, house and techno, the debut release digs deep across the spectrum; the contemplative synth spirals and breaks of Canadian-in-Berlin Tro's 'Meese En Garde', the Classic Music style jacks and slinks of Nicola Cruz's Fauna Extinta alias debut 'Window For Change.' Flip and slip into something more paranoid on Chicaiza's 'Andes Culprit' before local Toronto heroes Payphone remind us how close to Detroit their city is with the Rolando-style deep dream pumper 'Where It Hertz'. Mindful.

Review: There's no shortage of great electro around at the moment, but lest we forget Carl Finlow has been dishing out some of the finest for decades now. In many ways 20/20 Vision is his spiritual home too, so it's great to see him imparting his skills for a fresh long player of razor sharp body poppers loaded with robo-funk. From charging opener "Apparatus" to freaky wriggler "Carbon Deposits", restrained creeper "Components" to punchy melodic workout "Ampere", there's a lot to enjoy and so much musical detail to absorb across this record. As if we'd expect any less from Mr. Finlow.
