Crazy Kind Of Feeling (DJ Duckcomb Discomix) (7:47)
Review: The always cultured Emotional Rescue kicks of the first of what will be a series of reissue sou the music of young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel. He hailed from Trenchtown in Jamaica and grew up singing, learning guitar and bass, redoing under the tutelage of Bob Marley early on. Here his soul drenched reggae is offered dup with 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling', a unique track with horns and big bass but also a subtle disco energy. Next to a dub take, Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb serves up a mix that embellishes on the disco elements.

(Gonna Get) Hot Tonight (3:47)
Hot Tonight (part II) (4:06)
Review: Here's a nod to late 70s disco, funk and boogie featuring some of the best NYC musicians to grace the scene in the past 20 years, and recorded at Soul Fire Studios featuring over two dozen musicians. Members of El Michels Affair, Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Dap- Kings, Antibalas and more are featured on 10th Street's '(Gonna Get) Hot Tonight' which is a classic and timeless disco funk affair featuring an absolutely sublime string section. Over on the flip, the slower and more emotive 'Hot Tonight' (part II) makes for feelgood vibes on the dancefloor later in the night, featuring sensual vocals to boot.

(Livin' In) New York City (3:26)
Moodies Basement (4:19)
Review: Masterminded by Jeff Dynamite Silverman, 10th Street is an all-star studio band comprised of some of NYC's best disco, funk and soul musicians of the last two decades (including members of Antibalas, the Dap-Kings, The Expressions and El Michels Affair). The collective's self-titled debut album, which dropped earlier this year, is a genuine must-listen and offers a near perfect distillation of disco, soul and funk flavours of the 1970s. This 7" single sports two of that set's standout cuts: hazy, mid-tempo, laidback disco-funk number 'Livin' In New York City', where Blaxploitation guitar licks, spacey synths, sustained organ chords and eyes-closed female vocals catch the ear, and the weightier, more percussive and undeniably dancefloor-friendly instrumental 'Moodie's Basement'. In a word: essential!

Enlightenment Is Now (12Tree remix) (6:49)
Review: Hot Piroski Records have been on something of a hiatus for the last year or so but now make a welcome return with a new EP series. This collaborative affair is the result of an epic journey in an old Mercedes from London to Gunjur and finds label head Robin 12Tree working with The Gambia and Bongo Koi as Gambian Disco Express. 'Enlightenment is Now' marks their first release on Hot Piroski Records and it comes with vocals from Gambian mystic Rev. Joseph N'Gole, recorded on the banks of the River Gambia. This one has already been hammered by Psychemagik, Pete Herbert, and Severino from Horse Meat Disco so it comes quality assured.

Church (Darkstarr Diskotek rub)
Church (Darkstarr Diskotek dub)
Review: Given the clubby, fun nature of their music, it's not surprising 2 Bears have become the most popular off shoot of the Hot Chip phenomenon. Joe Goddard's project with fellow larger than life scene stalwart Raf Daddy see their Southern Fried classic "Church" get the Darkstarr treatment. It's an all round classy release - with the typically on point production from DJ Cosmo and Ashley Beedle across the Rub and Dub versions more than matched by the presentation. This 10 inch has hand silk screen printed artwork and label courtesy of artist James Morrison and represents the final instalment in Bitches Brew series of highly limited ten inches. Musically our favourite is the Rub, simply because the live sounding deep bump is the perfect backing for the rising crescendo of chorus harmonies.

Tape (12' edit)
Tape (Burnski remix)
Tape (Dirt Crew dub mix)
Review: The 2020 Soundsystem boys return with an even more DJ friendly edit of the funky electronic disco, Greg Wilson inspired track "Tape". "Tape" is taken from 2020 Soundsystem's debut album "No Order", which was released earlier this year to 5 star reviews across the board. The guys worked on their original sound, influenced by the classic 80s electrofunk sets of the brilliant Greg Wilson, to give the track an extra dancefloor injection. Our first remixer Burnski, a fresh, new talent who has already made his mark through releases on Infant Records, Morris Audio and Trapez. He takes things deeper with his trademark clicky style, but still keeping the funk stuck in the grooves. Dirt Crew have been cleaning up with their productions on prestigious labels such as Moodmusic, Gomma, Breastfed, Soma, Crosstown Rebels and now 2020 Vision. Dirt Crew deliver two killer mixes in their trademark solid, hypnotic, electronic house style. The dub keeps things stripped down and heads down, whilst the main mix, which is only available digitally, goes straight for the jugular with a Teutonic rave sound.

Wanting For Lust (40 Thieves edit)
Incredible Doobie (40 Thieves edit)
Review: The fourth in the Private Release series overseen with such artistic aplomb by the Public Release imprint arrives with Rong Music clique 40 Thieves at the helm. Once again continuing the food based theme, this picture disc depicts the before and after stages of what happens when a burrito is placed in front of a hungry soul - with this choice of dish worthy of the Bay Area crew. Across both sides 40 Thieves serve up three edits as well as an original arrangement with the former triplet set to get those disco beards twitching with regards to the source. From the cosmic meanderings of "Wandering" to the dubby proto warehouse flex of "Wanting For Lust" and the psychedelic cosmiche wanderlust of "Incredible Doobie" our own train spotting endeavours are exhausted and seeped in failure. What is important however is each track is killer, and bettered by "Telegraph" a towering melange of ever climbing squeaky synth modulations and urgent rhythms. Big tip!

Review: 40 Thieves is a group of good friends and musicians. The track Kicks off with wall of sound percussion, a massive synth bass, headrush atmospherics and raging, gorgeous keys by the insanely talented Dan Hastie (Pharcyde, Madlib, Breakestra, Plantlife). The track slowly builds to a killer break. When that bass kicks back in you're talking maximum dancefloor havoc for the kiddies.

U Know U
Read My Mind (feat Paul Joseph)
Review: A long-awaited taste of what to expect from their forthcoming sophomore set Borough 2 Borough, this trio of deep, groove-laden treats from Craig Smith and The Revenge's 6Th Borough Project have been long-awaited. "In Your Arms" has Balearica stamped all over it; concentrated house euphoria with sun-splashed keys and a perfectly executed disco vocal sample, it will melt the heart of everyone in a three mile radius of the club. "U Know U" is just as slow and steady but comes with a more electronic make-up that's almost Italo in its delivery. Gradually developing momentum with classy drama, it's instantly timeless. "Read My Mind" closes this spectacular show with a nagging, hooky tech piece that drives with a sharply edited piano riff, hushed vocals and an ever-morphing rhythm. Beautiful.

The Vibes (Chicago Damn remix)
Just A New Day
Review: Together as 6th Borough Project, Craig Mitchell and Graeme "The Revenge" Clark have been a fixture of Delusions of Grandeur from the off, regularly transmitting their trademark brand of chunky disco-flecked house over the label's ongoing duration. The Vibes EP marks the duo's first material for Delusions since last year's well received debut album One Night In The Borough and finds them in fine fettle. Lead track "The Vibes" sees Mitchell and Clark in dark yet playful mood, with slick drum edits melding perfectly with eponymous vocal samples and a thick analogue bassline laying down the warehouse worthiness, while the arrival of orchestral strings provides the emotive release. Chicago Damn takes the track somewhere else on the accompanying remix, possibly his favourite productions since that killer debut Merc emission, stripping it back to a battle between high and low elements that must sound epic on a big system. Those craving some classic 6BP will revel in the luxurious expanses of "Just A New Day" that waits an absolute age to drop a beast of a bassline - well worth it though.

String-A-Lude
Review: Scottish duo Graeme Smith and Craig Smith aka 6th Borough Project release their first full length on Delusions of Grandeur. One Night In The Borough splits as three 12"s; this final vinyl edition kicks off with two surprisingly house dominated cuts. "B.U.R.T" and "The Fool", whose intro does indeed fool via a standard tech house first half. Abruptly, the music cuts and from nowhere an immense disco accapella cuts in - the beat returns as a disco fuelled funk attack, 6th Borough project as we know (and love) them! On the flip, three tracks of 6th Borough project's highest standard are on display. Warm, low slung, swinging and expertly executed disco house exudes. These guys know what they do best and by sticking to it they succeed time and time again. 6th Borough project - Juno salute you!

Review: RNT welcomes Brooklyn-based band 79.5 to the family with the first single from their forthcoming eponymous LP. Soulful and psychedelic, the haunting melodies of Club Level float above a steady strutting rhythm section, punctuated by moaning baritone saxophone and drenched in washy reverb.

NYC mainstay Eli Escobar crafts a masterful remix that leans into 80s nostalgia, with a soundscape and arrangement nothing short of perfection.

Review: The faultless Big Crown label revisits one of its biggest hits from back in 2016. New York City-based collective 79.5 is made up of seven musicians and singers and their gorgeous 'Terrorize My Heart' 45rpm reached some heart aching disco highs. Now it comes with in two new forms - the disco dub with its seductive drums and bass and airy, soulful vocal, and a remix from hip hop royalty Tall Black Guy. He deconstructs the tune and rebuilds it as a smoky, jazz tinged slow motion hip hop beat. The chords are warm and cuddly, the vocal is more meandering but still acts as the perfect icing on a delicious cake.

Now the Dynamite Cuts 45s Series has two of the gems from it on this special new 7". It's the first time there a-side has been on its own piece of vinyl and that tune 'Whats Shakin' goes first. Waiting On A Train (feat Ellen Beth Abdi & Chunky - Jade Parker remix) (4:02)
Review: The album 1982 stands out as one of the finest moments in A Certain Ratio's story. When you're talking about a band that started half a decade before the year 1982, that's saying something. Following on from the landmark ACR Loco, the outfit's 2023 record is packed with multidimensionality - dipping toes into everything from gritty post punk (a sound from whence they first came) to Afrobeat, all realised with exceptional attention to detail and the highest possible standards. 2023 EP, as the title suggests, builds on the impact of that latest long-from release. Opening on the jazzy late night club workout 'Day By Day', a brand new number, the package then jumps into work from the aforementioned LP, redone by contemporary dons. So that's Werkha on a stepping, garage-hued version of 'SAMO', Emperor Machine emphasising the exotic disco grooves of 'Constant Curve', and Jade Parker offering a highly percussive cosmic take on 'Waiting On A Train'.

Review: It's been a weird summer for sure in 2020, but you can improve yours by a guaranteed 100% with the addition of this hard to fine and often expensive 1980 great. High Frequency was a disco offshoot of Aleem, a boogie-funk, r&b and dance music trio formed in New York City. "Summertime" is the sort of bristling and infectious disco cut even the stony hearted can enjoy. The funky bassline, the feel good vocals, the lush chords - it's a real pearl of a track. The instrumental is just as feel good and uplifting. What a 7" this is.

They pioneered a breakbeat, cut-up and paste sounds 20 years ago that was high on energy and with plenty of character. Now they look to the roots of the sounds they used to draw from and serve up a new single on Jam City that is all about disco. 'Lit Up' has loose, jumbled drums and funk basslines with some great vocal flourishes up top from Gizelle Smith. A remix on the flip takes things into deeper new soul territory.

Review: Welcome to the dusty white sands of Balearic Russia. After their breakthrough release on Mellophonia earlier this year, A Vision Of Panorama make their wax debut on Manchester's Aficionado. Luxury synth work a la mid 80s, if you didn't know any better, these four originals have been unearthed in a secret vault Jan Hammer didn't know he had. From the gentle melodic bobbing and major key overlays of "Cascade" to the languishing star-gazing allure of "Solar Eclipse" via the liquid-like woodblock rhythm of "Southern Breeze", each one of these will whisk you somewhere warm in seconds. Review: Passport To Paradise has pulled off something of a coup here, snagging a rare re-edit EP from Redlight Records' digger Abel Nagengast. Predictably, it's rather good, and full to bursting with sneaky reworks of obscure gems. Title track "African Sheikh" - a kind of wonky Italo-disco/proto Afro-house hybrid - is particularly potent, though the quirky electrofunk/synth-pop shuffle of "Impossible" is almost as good. The former kicks off by, says the label, "taking an Ocean classic for a trip to Miami." His take on 'Lost' is a funk-laced jam that blends r&b vocals with bubbling beats and jazzy keys into something brilliantly seductive. It's pretty hard to imagine where it is unless you are a geography expert. However, there are people that produce electronic music like this living there. Acos Coolkas are mainly known in Russia for their domestic works and releases and 'Skyline' is one of their first releases abroad and first (but definitely not the last) appearance on Theomatic.

This Time Baby (Bully Boy dub) (4:43)
Review:  Those playful edit and remix maestros at French label Act of Sedition are back with another red hot, super limited 2 x 7" special. It kicks off with a nice languid remix of the classic 'Let Love Be Free' with an extra low slung sleazy bassline beneath the gorgeous vocal. Bruno Belissimo goes for a heavy, scuffed up deep house take on 'Coffee & Cocaine' that has a vast bassline and some jazzy keys all tumbling off grid. Lego edits 'It Aint Reggae' into a high speed boogie gem and Bully Boy offers a chunky disco stomper to round things out.

Arthur Adams - "You Got The Floor" (5:54)
Millie Jackson - "We Got To Hit It Off" (4:42)
C-Brand - "Wired For Games" (8:38)
Review: Groovin Recordings is kicking off a new series in brilliant style here with three killer disco-boogie tracks. They were all first released between 1979 and 1982 and first up is Arthur Adams with 'You Got The Floor.' It's an uber cool groove with AOR vocals, loose drum funk and sprinkles of disco dust. There is more theatre to the soaring strings of Millie Jackson's 'We Got To Hit It Off' which has rickety drum loops and funky bass riffs. C-Brand's 'Wired For Games' closes won and might be the best of the lot with its coy male vocal, playful guitar twangs and nice raw claps.

Blame Game (3:48)
Review: New funk and soul grooves from Adesha and Vincent Kwok, the Italian vocalist and production duo responsible for a rain-made string of releases on Sleepers Records. 'Life's Too Short' and 'Blame Game' are infectious, talkboxing punchers; the former hears a muted guitar solo in its sultry breakdown, as if to say "don't be afraid of anything that stands in your way", while 'Blame Game' continues to deal with the tumult of difficult relationships, aiming to mood-set your next party with frank DX7 chords and 909s. This split single comes to a limited pink vinyl 7" and picture cover, and is limited to just 150 copies.

Review: Adesha and Vincent Kwok come together once more for a new transmission that takes its stylistic cues from "the glittering dance floors of the disco era to Minneapolis-inspired funk." These are lush tunes with gorgeous backing vocals, fine sax sounds and irresistible drums. First is 'Hot Mess' which is a classic disco workout with pumping drums and nice loos percussion under the soaring vocals and cosmic synth rays. 'Girl Fan' has a sizzling sax solo and describes the stages of fandom over punchy beats. This is the third collab from this pair on The Sleepers Record label.

Run Hot (6:05)
Review: The third EP from Peckham's hush-hush Edits From The Tribe series (which may or may not be helmed by South London's most famous Executive Producer) comes from a man renowned for his house revisions: Adesse Versions. Predictably, he delivers the goods, first via the bombastic, "Work"-era Masters At Work drums, woozy chords and jangling guitars of bona-fide basement banger "Jagger". While superb, it's flipside "Run Hot" - a jazzy, jammed-out deep house beast built around samples from a much-loved disco era classic previously sampled (way back) by Pepe Bradock - that's the real heat. It has "peak-time anthem" written allover it.

Review: Given that Soulwax boys Stephen and David Deweale have a major hand in the running of Deewee - with all releases being recorded and mixed at their Belgian studio - it's perhaps unsurprising that the label's output is consistently good. This 12", seemingly a debut from chanteuse Charlotte Adigery, is every bit as impressive as its predecessors. It features the vocalist singing in a modern soul style - in multiple languages, we should add - over wonderfully imaginative, left-of-centre, heavily electronic backing tracks that variously doff a cap to early electro, Italo-disco, minimal wave, and - most surprisingly of all - pastoral folk. It's hard to describe, but uniformly brilliant.

Ceci N'Est Pas Un Cliche (3:47)
Review: Belgian DJ duo 2ManyDJs make their music under the Soulwax alias. Whenever they do, it is arresting, seriously quality stuff. For this one the multi-genre mash up artists look to remix 'Cliche' by Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupul for the French label Because Music. Their first version is a typically textured, raw, ravey indie-techno workout with rugged beats and sleazy vocals lit up by bright strobes. After the instrumental comes 'Ceci N'Est Pas Un Cliche' which is a macho disco stomper with sliding hi hats and low-slung bass.

Rivers (4:52)
Review: Here comes a second release on a mysterious unknown label from someone known as Admin, who has previously landed on a VA on Banoffee Pies. That was a deep house track but these two are very much lush and summery disco vibes. 'Halo' opens up with the sort of open-air Mediterranean gorgeousness that has you picturing yourself sipping cocktails by a twinkling ocean in the late afternoon sun. 'Rivers' then picks up the pace a little but remains awash with musicality and soul-stirring chords over organic, loose drums. Perfect stuff.

Review: New year, new white label vinyl that you need in your life. This one comes from Adam "Admin" Wickens who is a lovely chap and fine DJ and producer who we havent heard from for a while. In the past he has impressed on Kolour Limited and Banoffee Pies and now goes deep across a pair of jazz tinged deep house gems. 'Step Into Light' has a louche beat and piano lounge chords over the top of the shakers, dusty hits and mellifluous pads. 'Reflect & Heal' then speed sup little but is just as soft, cuddly, and richly melodic for those late night sessions.

Adonis - "Down The House" (Toby Tobias & Hardway Bros remix)
Willie Wonka - "What Is House" (Andy Blake edit)
Ron Hardy - "Sensation" (Richard Sen edit)
Mr Lee - "Pump Up Chicago" (JD Twitch edit)
Review: Whilst all the vinyl samplers for this DJ History curated Trax Re-edit compilation are worth investigating, it's perhaps this third volume that screams essential the most by virtue of the presence of JD Twitch, Andy Blake, Richard Sen, Toby Tobias and Hardway Bros as the resident re-editors. Nor do they disappoint either as Hardway Bros team up with Rekids type Tobias and introduce some driving energetic synth patterns into Adonis' "We're Rocking Down This House" as well as embellishing the bottom end for a modern day warehouse thumper. Equally good is Cave Painter Andy Blake teasing out the rubbery off kilter undertones to Willy Wonka's spoken word drum machine thriller "What Is House" whilst retaining the raw, stuttering core. On the flip, Richard Sen goes deep on the signature synth stabs to Ron Hardy's "Sensation" which will destroy the more discerning dancefloors out there. Finally JD Twitch strips Mr. Lee's "Pump Up Chicago" of its really quite silly overtones and twists the track into a brilliantly hypnotic and menacing acid tinged late night jacker

Review: Adryiano Richter's trademark brand of dusty, sample-based deep house with strong funk/soul leanings has landed him a great reputation and releases on the likes of Heist, Soul Notes, his own Cestraw and current it label Shall Not Fade. This is actually his third release for the label in less than a year which is particularly impressive, we must say. The Dream With EP is possibly the German producer's finest offering yet; although probably only a child when the emerging sounds of French Touch came up in the late '90s, he's managed to recapture the zeitgeist incredibly well 20 years later. The funked-up soul power of "Got U Lovin" or the neon-lit rapture of the title track with their clever loops and crunchy SP1200 style drums would make legends like Cassius or Alan Braxe stand up and notice. The infectious DJ tool "All Damn Nite" calls to mind classic DJ Sneak or Phil Weeks.

Frank's Einsamkeit (5:51)
Review: Audiosex and Hanoben stepped out together on Discos Capablanca back in 2018 with the on-point acidities of Phone Sex, and now they're teaming up once again for this killer clutch of edit tackle for the always interesting Duca Bianco label. Rather than the well-mined stocks of disco and funk that usually get dusted down by edit scavenegers, these two have turned to synth pop and German new wave sounds, coming up with four deep cover, deliciously dishevelled pieces which align perfectly with the brand of acidic club music they make themselves. 'Elvira's Katzenfisch' is a prime case in point - a broad, sweeping slice of synthwave which sounds like it might slide off the reel to reel at any moment, while 'Frank's Einsamkeit' swells into a searing 303 burner for the darkest dungeon dancefloors.

Burkina Faso (Jura Soundsystem Discodub)
Review: Emotional Rescue can be relied on to dig up obscure, left of centre dance gems and serve them up to newer, wider audiences. Adu's reggae-pop cut 'Burkina Faso' is a great example, re-purposed for the dancefloor without any of its original flavour lost in the overhaul. A
South Saharan/West African emigre to Brixton, Rauf Adu would go on to fairly sizeable European fame with the Eddy Grant-esque 'Human To Human'. This, however, is his 1982 debut for Copasetic Records, another reggae-pop inspired, ludicrously catchy effort with scorched electric guitar and a Compass Point-style drum/bassline providing rhythmic rocksteadiness. As well as the buffed up original, there's a dub mix, which gives his beautiful guitar plenty of room to breathe, and an appearance from the Isle of Jura Sound System boss Kevin Griffiths , whose remix completes the trio of mixes.

My Enemy
Review: "My Enemy" is the latest single to be culled from Aeroplane's debut album We Can't Fly and comes adorned with some suitably heavy remix support. Undoubtedly the most dancefloor pliable track on the album, in the hands of Rex The Dog it is turned into a heaving arpeggio epic that sounds like the collective work of a thousand Moroders! In contrast Curtis 'Green Velvet' Jones twists the track into a forever rolling behemoth of a club track primed for the more tribal leaning floors. Vito's original is included here for good measure and still packs quite the over the top Abba leaning orchestral disco punch.

Review: Ahead of what's become one of this year's most anticipated albums due to unforeseen circumstances, Aeroplane drops his second single in ''Superstar''. Given that the track itself leans quite heavily on vocoder it was an obvious step to get Chromeo involved on an amended version called ''She's A Superstar''. Yuksek and Brodinski add a peaktime 2010 French touch on their remix as The Krays.
