A
B
Review: Limited. Mysterious. Essential. The ever-collectable New York Edits series continues with two more outstanding versions that were created during the city's headiest disco era. Stomping, loopy and fully-focussed on the dancefloor, both sides stand the test of time and remain that way for a long time. "Side A" takes a stomping funk approach while "Side B" takes a more spacious groove with alluring harmonies, strident strings and an awesome bassline. Just like the previous series releases, this is essential... Grab it while you can!

In Your Arms
U Know U
Read My Mind (feat Paul Joseph)
Review: A long-awaited taste of what to expect from their forthcoming sophomore set Borough 2 Borough, this trio of deep, groove-laden treats from Craig Smith and The Revenge's 6Th Borough Project have been long-awaited. "In Your Arms" has Balearica stamped all over it; concentrated house euphoria with sun-splashed keys and a perfectly executed disco vocal sample, it will melt the heart of everyone in a three mile radius of the club. "U Know U" is just as slow and steady but comes with a more electronic make-up that's almost Italo in its delivery. Gradually developing momentum with classy drama, it's instantly timeless. "Read My Mind" closes this spectacular show with a nagging, hooky tech piece that drives with a sharply edited piano riff, hushed vocals and an ever-morphing rhythm. Beautiful.

Cranmer's Beat
Bombs & Wives
Review: Less of an EP, more of a mini album, there's a rich sense of consistency throughout this vibrant compendium. Authentic, funky and polished to a sexy sheen, nu-disco mainstay Jaz has nailed each and every vibe on this six-tracker. Highlights include the wonderfully sedate groove, sexy synth squiggles and slo-mo Will Powers flavour of "Cranmer's Beat", the frenetic guitar rhythm and emphatic vocal focus of "Took You" and the block-party busting Zapp & Rogers-style funk riff on "I Can't Dance". Dust off those Jaz hands, you're going to need them.

Golden Triangle
Review: Cyber Dance Records return with a full-length double-vinyl album from Manchester's Kid Machine (aka Mark Wilkinson) following a string of instantly sold-out EPs for Viewlexx, Red Laser and Flight Recorder. A long-time collaborator of world-famous Italo Disco DJ Flemming Dalum, it's no surprise that many of the tracks have that hallmark space sound reminiscent of the likes of Cyber People and Koto, but Mark stamps his own distinct identity on the genre by slowing down the BPM's and incorporating many other influences throughout so that this is no retro affair but a distinctly fresh and modern take on the genre. No mere collection of dance tracks, this is a proper album in the truest sense of the word. From the dark and powerful strains of the opening 'This Is My Universe' to the rousing emotional closing track 'Golden Triangle' Mark takes us on an epic synthesised journey that is as comfortable on the home stereo or night-drives in the car as it is on the dancefloor. Effortlessly incorporating elements and themes ranging from the cosmic ('Forever In The Stars', 'Leaving Space', 'Astromance', 'Starbreaker', 'Galaxia') to the militant ('We Are At War') to subconscious fear ('Nightmares'), everything flows with an ease far beyond the short time that he's been releasing music so far and revealing why his rise has been such a lightning phenomenon.

The Dells - "No Way Back"
Jules Shear - "When Love Surge"
Ron Hardy & Jesse Saunders - "Untitled"
Review: Thirteen is unlucky for some, but that's not the case when it comes to the hugely popular RDY label which digs through the vast archives of Muzic Box favourites pioneered by the legend that was Ron Hardy for a thirteenth time. On the A Side is a classic example of Ron's style, extending the intro to "Adventure" by The Dells into 8 minutes of blissful disco excellence, whilst the take on "Love Surge" embellishes the electronic nuances of Jules Shear's mid 80s synth pop curio. House heads will be all over the final cut, a "Untitled" production/edit Hardy collaborated with fellow Chi-town House pioneer Jesse Saunders which has box jam brilliance written into it's DNA.

Units - "High Pressure Days" (Headman dub)
Gina X - "No GDM" (Red Axes remix)
Gina X - "No GDM" (Headman 2003 dub)
Review: Relish Recordings join the dots between the past and present on this EP that features a collection of under rated gems reworked by the label's artists. Headman lines the A Side with reworks of The Unknown Cases and The Units, with the latter's "High Pressured Days" the sort of track that should light up any dancefloor in it's original format. It's also been graced with some high profile remixes over the years (with Rory Phillips outdoing Todd Terje in our opinion) and the Headman dub included here should go down a treat in the Dalston Superstore basement on a Saturday night. On the flip Gina X's classic sultry disco not disco stomper "No G.D.M" is flipped by Red Axes and Headman with the former's delay heavy take a real treat.

Deep Space
Deep N Slow
Review: Proving there is plenty of life left in the disco edit, the Tugboat series returns with a third offering here and unlike previous editions it's not clear who exactly is behind this 12", though given the "made In Chicago" stamp those familiar with the label should have some idea. Proceedings commence with "Do Me Like" which has the sort of satisfying kick that will sound immense on the dancefloor and a nice undulating groove that endlessly teases the source material. The remaining three edits are more traditional in their execution by contrast with "Deep Space" brandishing a particularly earwormy vocal hook.

Never Go Away
The Glow
Review: Italian vibe maestro Riccio continues his well-established pedigree for gossamer grooves with this beautiful disco duo on Spanish imprint Slow Town. "Never Go Away" is a strutting slap-bass jam that develops gradually as the string loop in the background opens wider and wider. "The Glow", meanwhile, hums with soft filtered deep house loopiness before strident strings fly in from nowhere on the fills, elevating the atmosphere with excitement and subtle unpredictability. Stunning.

Zsa Zsa (Psychemagik remix)
Zsa Zsa (Cato retouch)
Zsa Zsa (Wolf + Lamb remix)
Zsa Zsa (Kiani vs Red D remix)
Review: The original of this first saw the light back in autumn 2013, and it remains a dynamically built nu-disco track boasting early Aeroplane style piano licks and an arresting vocal from Kristina Train. It's Blamma Blamma at their most stately and stunning. Here we find it in remix form; Psychemagik provide a liquid, bulbous bass facelift, Cato re-emphasises the nude beauty with a few edit sparkles, Wolf + Lamb go deeper with a synth heavy late-night floor stomper while Kiani vs Red D close the show with a sunset-minded slice of modern euphoria. Each twist adding a whole new chapter to the Blamma Blamma story, the only problem is working out which rub to add in your next set.

Sleazy McQueen - "TTOF" (4:43)
Osmose - "Do What Cha Doin" (4:28)
Review: Smokecloud come correct with this stunning doublet. The A-side is taken care of by Whiskey Disco head honcho Sleazy McQueen. What begins as a frenetic post-funk DFA style jam, "TTOF" suddenly switches into an all-out disco adventure with big strings, brassy vocals and a seriously hedonistic groove. Osmose takes care of the B with much sexier, slower jam. Editing Captain & Tennille's "You Never Done It Like That" with clarity and care, it's the perfect foil to Sleazy's full-flavoured disco joint. Hand-stamped and limited, this needs your attention now!

Moon B - "Freshness"
L33 & Sven Atterton - "Sunset"
Review: Two beautiful slices of soulful new disco from the ever-dependable Omega Supreme. First up we find Atlanta's Moon B getting seriously cosmic with "Freshness". Slo-mo and spaced out, this is coated with rich enveloping synth flurries and a bass groove that simply won't quit. L33 & Sven Atterton's "Sunset" is equally charming. A little more uptempo to the A-side, there's a strong sense of jazz to the minor key chords while the sub-melodies twinkle over the groove to create an overall dreamy sensation. Beautiful.

Disco Train (Dunkeltier edit)
Review: ** RATLIFE REPRESS ** Dresden crew Uncanny Valley introduce a new Credit 00 helmed offshoot called Rat Life records dedicated to "providing tools for a working DJ's night out in the wilderness". It's the second sub-division of Uncanny Valley, following the establishment of the shtum imprint for "proper techno and raw house" in late 2012, and the new label is intended to reflect the "imperfect spirit of life in dirty raw dance music and its natural environment". The debut release sees Credit 00 and fellow UV member Dunkeltier (aka Sneaker) turn in edits of uncredited tracks with the prevailing sound falling sweetly into the vein of muscular EBM.

Midas Touch
Midas Touch (Machinedrum version)
Review: Jimmy Edgar and Travis Stewart don their JETS guise for a second release on Berlin club meets label Leisure System, and they've only gone and covered "Midas Touch"! Midnight Star's 1986 track is a disco funk classic in its own right, as is the Hell Interface version done by Boards Of Canada so Jim and Travis have the odds stacked against them. However they've pulled off a coup in enlisting Warp's resident crooner Jamie Liddell to play the role of Melvin Gentry on a respectful cover version that slips in just the right degree of contemporary funk sheen. On the flip Stewart drops a remix under his solo Machinedrum guise that has a touch of early 2000 era Bugz In The Attic to it.

Swoop (original mix)
Swoop (LEXX remix)
Swoop (club edit)
Review: Launched back in 2010, the Jolly Jams label has consistently nailed it when it comes to contemporary disco in the 12" format. Label boss DJ Kaos returns to helm the 12th Jolly Jams 12" and the first of 2014 and the mood remains resplendent and groove laden throughout on Swoop. In original form, "Swoop" sees Kaos treat a classic array of disco drums and percussion to some sublime delay effects, with guitar solos and piano lending the cut a dash of the Balearics. Swiss don LEXX mans the flip with a Maurice Fulton does mid 80s proto-house refix that will get the DJs in a fluster whilst a final club edit toughens up the percussive backbone and adds a Latin hint.

Review: Dutch duo Remco De Jong and Florentijn Boddendijk formed the Elitechnique project in 2006 as an outlet for their electro-tinged spin on disco music, and have been irregular contributors to the Clone discography ever since. Last year the Rotterdam pairing released their debut album Intrusion on Clone Loft Supreme Series, a label launched in 2009 for a funkier, disco driven stream of releases, that, among others, have so far come from DJ Kaos, Tom Noble, and Reggie Dokes. A second edition is most welcome and provides some January solace for those out there seeking a blend of Cosmic Disco and '70s porn-funk that takes it's cues from italo, hi-NRG and French soundtracks, with penultimate cut "High Risk" a particular gem.

Review: It certainly says something to be part of a label run by Japanese disco maker KZA, that JD Twitch, Eddie C and Jacques Renault have all been a part of. That's exactly what Jose Manuel has done by debuting on Let's Get Lost with a two-track 12". "A", for A-side, is a reverberating, string lead disco production that sounds as if it should be played in the midst of fire dancers thanks to its tribal percussion and late night oriental vibe. While "B", for B-side, is a gurgling analogue bassline mixed with obscure pipe playing, Roisin Murphy-sounding vocals spoken in another language and wood block knocks and tocks.
