Zamani (dub mix) (6:20)
Review: 49th Floor is a pseudonym for Stefano Curti from The True Underground Sound of Rome, originally applied to a sole 1992 release Night Passage. Vibraphone always do a fine job of folding time in on itself from these glory days of Italo house up to the present day, and so it feels natural for a new 49th Floor 12" to arrive despite more than 30 years since the last one. 'Zamani' comes on four different versions which give plenty of options to deep diving DJs, from the full-spectrum, pad-soaked propulsion of the 'Body Mix' to the raw acid throwdown of the 'Magic K Dub Remix', a straight up dreamy 'Deep Mix' and swirling, splashy 'Dub Mix'. The quality never dips, whichever twist in the tale you opt for.

Review: Portland-based Aaron Carlson is AC$ and this is his third outing on the cult Sakskobing label. Once again he comes at house music from a unique vantage point and mixes up the rawness of Motor City hero Omar-S with the disco dalliances of Metro Area and the deep house of Berlin. His tunes are packed with character as well as funky drum patterns such as on the seductive lo-fi house of 'Patio Protocol'. 'No Jello' is a bumping Chicago house cut with nice frayed edges and 'The Big Black Slot' is cosmic tech house with soulful heart. EPs this fresh and classy don't come along often.

Instant (5:58)
The Catalyst (6:18)
Narcotic Illusion (5:13)
Review: Acid Jerks is a project from Oliver $ and Stefan Braatz which celebrates everything we love about vintage house music. Following recent drops on Nu Groove and Refuge Recordings, the duo make their way to German label Flaneurecordings with some precision tooled jackers that will have seasoned heads wondering if they're hearing an undiscovered Chicago gem or something from the new school. 'Utopia Vision' is the most feel-good of the lot with its soaring string stabs and undulating piano chords, while 'Instant' creates a raw, punchy mood for the real dancers to get creative with. 'The Catalyst' plus some classic Mr Fingers-inspired moves, and 'Narcotic Illusion' completes the set in a grubby, sweaty mode that echoes K Alexi Shelby at his steamiest.

Review: Those wonderful Acid Jerks are back again with more of their retro-inspired house sounds following on from some well-received outings on the likes of Nu Groove and Refuge Records. Their fourth strike is another one that is hard not to love, right from the dusty opening drums and seductive chords of 'Utopia Vision'. 'Instant' is a mid-tempo cut with fantastic swing in the drums and a hint of tribal percussion while 'The Catalyst' takes you right back early 80s Trax sounds. 'Narcotic Illusion' completes this nostalgic trip with sustained chords and suspenseful drums.

Counter Balance (6:24)
Distant Power Plant (6:17)
A Thousand Kisses (5:40)
Organ Grinder (6:17)
Review: The famous Nu Groove is about as influential as they come when you're talking about early house music. It had its own distinctive New Yorkian twist with much material on it produced by the legendary Burrell Brothers. Here we are reminded why it is such a vital label with an EP from Acid Jerks that embodies everything that made it so: warm kick drums, musical melodies and a sense of soul that is impossible to ignore. After a smooth opener, 'Distant Power Plant' has a more raw and menacing bassline tearing up the raw drums and 'A Thousand Kisses' then leans into a serene techno vibe but still with house music as the foundation. The warm late-night chords of closer 'Organ Grinder' make it the standout.

Wheels Of Fortune (5:51)

Ace Of Spade (5:13)
Review: After declining to reveal their identities while promoting their early singles on Nu Groove, Acid Jerks decided to unmask themselves earlier in the year. Now Berlin-based twosome Oliver Siebert (AKA Oliver $) and Stefan Braatz (founder of Adapter Records) have pitched up on Local Talk for the first time. They begin by doffing a cap to Lil' Louis and hypnotic, heads-down epics of old on the hypnotic excellence of 'Shades of Grey' (which boasts some very DJ Rolando-esque synth-strings), before opting for a more Mr Fingers-esque sound on the nostalgic 'Wheels of Forture'. Over on the reverse, 'Rise Up' sounds like a long-lost Virgo Four deep house jam from the mid 1980s, while 'Ace of Spade' is a terrific, effects-laden jack-track driven forwards by a killer bassline and psychedelic acid lines.

Review: The enigmatic Acid Jerks are back this week, following up some great releases on the legendary NYC imprint Nu Groove with this new one for Aussie label Refuge Recordings. 'Atomic' is proper old school acid house reminiscent of the glory days of Trax Records and featuring Mikey V's sleazy vocal delivery atop which really brings it together. Over on the flip, Melbourne legend Boogs teams up with Ben Silver for a remix, followed by one more moody and lo-slung rendition by ADMN.

Family 83 (4:35)
Korma (5:19)
Review: Greek label Acid Cuts continues to serve up its unique 8" offerings with lashings of great acid sounds on each one. This 18th helping comes from Acidaloius and opens with 'Family 83', a meandering acid line weaves in and out of jacked up, early Chicago house drums. It's dark and direct but has plenty of mystery in the distant synth work. The highlight of this particular package though is the flipside 'Korma' with its pinging kicks and clipped sense of techno funk. It is again run through with a soft acid line and makes for a nice fresh take on the sound.

Ceci N'Est Pas Un Cliche (3:47)
Review: Belgian DJ duo 2ManyDJs make their music under the Soulwax alias. Whenever they do, it is arresting, seriously quality stuff. For this one the multi-genre mash up artists look to remix 'Cliche' by Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupul for the French label Because Music. Their first version is a typically textured, raw, ravey indie-techno workout with rugged beats and sleazy vocals lit up by bright strobes. After the instrumental comes 'Ceci N'Est Pas Un Cliche' which is a macho disco stomper with sliding hi hats and low-slung bass.

Type-303 - "Knowhere" (6:25)
Review: While it's difficult to second-guess what Placid will select for each volume of his We're Going Deep label's compilation-style EPs, you can guarantee that it will be timeless-sounding, exquisitely produced, and most likely have some link to deep house, electro, acid or sci-fi techno. All of those boxes are ticked and then some on volume eight, which skips between melodious, acid-flecked dancefloor wooziness (Affie and Leila Yusuf's 'Dublvr'), warming sunrise-ready electro bliss (Zobol's 'Sense The Consensus'), ultra-deep, eyes-closed acid electro (Acidulant's 'The View of Her Shade') and IDM-tinged, intergalactic and dramatically pitched-down proto-jungle (Type-303's exceptional 'Knowhere'). Like its predecessors, this EP is nothing less than essential.

Review: Naarm-based producer Sam Alfred shows no signs of slowing down as we continue to be impressed by the material coming out of Australia right now. After releasing the energetic 'Suzuka' EP, completing a sold-out headline tour and playing a packed set at MODE Festival, he's now back with more full flavour beats. This one disk off with a real house anthem inspired by 90s club music with punchy piano, airy synths, and a driving cowbell rhythm. 'Care 4 U' has carefree garage house vibes a la salute, 'Keep It' brings some euro dance and trance energy and 'Distance' is a peak-time acid-laced pumper. Brilliant stuff.

Review: Bristol's Dream Software collective (and label) have long been fans of the mid 1990s work of Alex Silvi, best known for his releases as Alien Signal. So much so, in fact, that they reached out to the Italian producer and asked whether they could put out an EP of some of their favourite back catalogue tracks. That's what they've done here, flitting between the chiming melodies, warped electronics and shuffling beats of 'North Polar Stars', the chugging dream house-in-space flex of 'Brilliant Evening Planets', the stargazing proto-trance (with jazzy solos) of 'Quantum Limit', the intergalactic, acid-flecked dancefloor psychedelia of 'Violent Volcanoes of Lo' and the bleeping lead lines, immersive chords and bustling beats of 'Atomic (Esoteric Mix)'. It kicks off with the full throttle 'Teacher's with jacked up drums and percussion. 'I'm Your Ghost' then layers in circling acid lines and old school bass while 'I Still Believe' lats the spirits with its trippy synths and sci-fi melodies all bring a subtle sense of party and joy. Closing out this punchy analogue EP is '909 Lives' with more potent drums and rugged grooves.

Good Breath (feat Francesco Del Garda) (5:51)
Review: A curious new acid house release from the Berlin record label Restoration, themed after the wiles of controversial cybersecurity software mogul John McAfee. We see it as no surprise that the anti-malware expert turned exiled psychonaut has had a release fashioned after him; of course, similar figures like Edward Snowden have had the privilege of releasing with famous techno giants like Jean Michel-Jarre. Here, though, three tracks come from house and techno mainstays, not software giants: 'Someone Else' hails from The Analogue Cops and comes with a remix from DJ Sotofett, painting a dystopian picture of a future acid state. 'Amazon Crime', meanwhile, in the mode of acid, describes the ever-growing list of crimes committable against a corporate empire upon whose services we grow increasingly reliant.

Review: Platform 23 presents Ani-Roy, a project from friends Aniruddha Das and Gary "Roy" Stewart, who recorded two 12's of improvisational acid-house meets drone and samples in 1990.

They met over a love of principally reggae and post punk at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham in 1982, and started combining equipment, to make tape loops and delays for exploring the basics of dub, all the while building their own Sound System.

This learning and experimenting converged their interests in early possibilities afforded for programming sounds and effects. They moved to London / Birmingham respectively and continued their collaboration until all things aligned in 1990. Coming together with Andrew Campbell, a community / social entrepreneur based in Nottingham - and with access to the Marcus Garvey Centre studios - they recorded two improvisational jams to 2 16 track; Ani arranging drum and bass lines, programming 'counter melodies' with a TB-303, and Roy looking after the ominous ambient loops, melodies, riot and Prince Far I samples.

The fact there were so many "versions" compelled Andrew to put the results out on two 12's instead of one. Fari 116 and Tilt were self-released on hand-stamped white labels.

Archival testaments, but set apart from the burgeoning acid house scene - here they are re-mastered and reissued some 30 years later by Platform 23.

While Das went on to acclaim as part of Asian Dub Foundation, Stewart is an experimental artist producing sound design and immersive works for the likes of Tate Museum. Back in 1990, they created some of their first tracks as Ani-Roy, mixing the early influences of acid house with their interest in drone and sound effects, the results being the improvised jams 'Tilt' and 'Fari 116'. They were pressed as very limited white labels, remastered and reissued some 30 years later here on Platform 23.

Review: Rotterdam-based Ukrainian duo Antenna has got a super discography that includes outings on all the finest labels out there from Pinkman to Guidance to their own Antenna International US. Here they return to Clone Royal Oak for four tracks of deeply atmospheric house music. There is a big and tribal feel to 'Timbales' which is defined by thunderous hits of the eponymous drum as well as some spooky vocals. 'MDF' is more shadowy and paired back. The drum designs are so fresh it's a killer groove before things get all aggy and in your face with the off-balance stop and twitchiness of 'Bodja.' 'Park Life' closes out in reflective fashion with lush harmonies swirling around a big open space.

Review: Apiento is back on World Building with another excellently soul infused deep house gem that builds on the much loved "Things You Do For Love" 7". Subtle acid flecked bassline snakes in and out of the crisp drums as buttery smooth, heartbroken lyrics up top get you where it hurts. It's hugely sophisticated and absorbingly understated. Apiento & Tepper's dubbed out version recalls the early work of the one and only Larry Heard before a beatless Padapella closes things out for those who want to really make a dramatic emotional statement pre, mid or post-set.

The Future (4:55)
The Future (Cajmere Vision - Luke Solomon Slight edit) (6:16)
Review: For their latest trip into house history, reissue specialists Mint Condition takes us back to 1996 and the TB-303 heavy world of Chicago legend Armando Gallop. "The Future" was originally included on the artist's One World One Future full-length, before going on to become his final single release before he passed away in December '96. As with many of his finest works, "The Future" is a ragged, acid-fuelled delight, with warehouse-friendly stabs and repeated vocal samples riding a sweaty, jacking groove. Turn to the flip for Luke Solomon's subtle re-edit of Cajmere's "Vision" rework, a lolloping and groovy affair that trims the acid lines in favour of denser bass, spacey chords and a superb vocal line ("I see the future", presumably sung by the remixer himself).

As such it is a much hyped jam from New York City-by-way-of-Chicago newcomer Arsene. Review: Ralph Lawsons'20/20 Vision label has done a fine job of evolving and re-emerging after its 20th anniversary and is now serving up cutting edge sounds from fresh new artists once more. It has done plenty of good work in the world of electro recently but here it goes back to deep house from a fine rabble of artists. There is a slick bump n funk to the opener before warped cosmic tones and neon colours define the speedy deep techno of Harrison BDP's 'Dirty Mochyn.' On the flip are some more of those breezy Adam Pits beats and Keisuke's 'OK Taiko' then brings an early, percussive house vibe that takes us back to late 80s Chicago.

It kicks off with this first EP from his mate Atree over in Berlin and is a perfectly twisted mix of tech, minimal and acid. 'Outflow' begins with low-slung creeper and warped bass, then 'Sensible Counting Acab' spins out on a more lithe cosmic tip and 'Press Start' gets back to ragged synths, snappy hits and serrated basslines. Review: If you have prior experience of either Dublin label Lunar Disko or the producer Automatic Tasty, who hails from nearby Wicklow, you'll be familiar with both a sense of humour and accomplishment in production that lifts them a fair few iotas above the standard disco affair. This latest EP from the latter on the former demonstrates this perfectly, launching with the spoken word opener "Keep Your Receipt" which shows a cheeky idiosyncrasy absent from most records since Ninja Tune in it's late 90s pomp, whilst "Beannach Mhor" could easily be mistaken for Vibert under his Kerrier District alias, rewiring the think break to drive dreamy analogue clouds of 303. "Over The Hill" sounds like the sorely missed Italian duo Jollymusic reborn - all percussion scattering gleefully over a thick 101 bassline and outer galactic keys before dropping into a streamlined, dub-laden thrust. "Tropic Exchange" continues in this manner with dusty, jacked drum complemented by ever twinkling layers of keys and Lowlands style analogue bass, whilst "Small Hours" heads for the stars with colourful bursts of sonic texture filling the gaps between the 808 patterns.

Herra - "Thesis Trax" (5:30)
Review: Picnic tends towards flaunting the eclecticism of the British underground, standing in stark opposition to conformity. B Love, Rokko, Mathijs Smit and Herra come through for their latest V/A here, each with their own unique style and flavour to the four-way table - whether they work in deep house, techno, or the cheekier side of speed-garage-ambient. As 'Thumb Milk' says in the pre-drop moment of pause: "do what you feel, when you feel like it". Such is the exact feel of this EP, from the idyllic chordwork of Rock's 'Sunset Frequency' to the organic organry of 'Going Backwards'.

Marma - "Mambo" (7:24)
Bobby Metronome - "Body Free" (8:34)
Review: Two years ago, Make a Dance's M.A.D Records delivered their first compilation style EP - a fine five-tracker containing cuts from a mix of rising stars (Tom Carruthers, Asa Tate) and old heads (Andy Ash, Hard Drive Library). On this belated sequel, they've chosen to chowcase cuts from newcomers - with pleasingly strong results. Babyrollen impress with opener 'Whatuwant', a post-punk-sampling slab of acid house bounciness that sounds like an underground anthem in waiting, before we're treated to two slabs of jacking house-meets-deep house excellence: George Plant's'Music Begins' and the proto-house-tinged wonder that is 'Extasis' by Dim City. Over on the flip, 'Mambo' by Marma is deep, tactile and loved-up with lots of delay-laden drum hits, while Bobby Metronome's 'Body Free' is a colourful slab of pitched-up deep house/nu-disco fusion.

Technical Itch (6:14)

H (6:03)
Review: Josh Baker has been busy over the past four years or so, dropping minimal tech house heat on the likes of Dighop, Constant Sound and Automatic Writing while nurturing his own You & Me label. It's there he returns to with the surefooted Technical Itch EP, leaning in on some Nu Groove stylings for the crafty, bassweight thump of the title track and the deadly, catchy acid trickster 'Information Overload'. 'Just Act Normal' has fun turning up the 90s heat with a few subtly trance-y elements sneaking into the mix, and 'H' keeps things deep and dirty with some killer DX7 organ lines making sure you know where the influences come from.

1998 (Liquid Earth mix) (6:00)
Review: Baldo is the Barcelona-based tech house producer who helms labels like Neovinyl, BLD Tape, Curated By Time and Physical Education. It's the latter he returns to with this latest drop, the springy, bouncy Groove Radiance 12". 'Hotplay' leads the way with synths that might well take you back to the early days of electro house in the mid 00s, which Paramida then steams up good n' proper with their 'Hotpants' remix. '1998' keeps things juicy and jumping on the flip, slipping tiny slithers of breakbeat and acid into the mix for Liquid Earth to have a lot of fun remixing into a rolling trip monster.

Ride The Night (5:35)
Review: Barcelona mainstay Baldo originally released 'Ride The Night' as part of digital single Saturdays Come And Gone on Permanent Vacation in 2022. As a fierce and fabulous homage to Hi-NRG, it showed the most muscular, nocturnal side of Baldo's sound and the track took on a life of its own. Now the label have decided to give the track more prominence with this heavyweight vinyl remix package, which kicks off in style with a suitably throbbing workout from Red Axes before switching to the strutting big room style of Alex Neri. Jennifer Loveless zeroes in to the sensual heart of the track with a thrumming low end and a powerful command of the tension in the track, leaving it to Baldo's original to close the EP out in style.

Let It Rip (5:29)
Review: Helmed by Kid Batchelor and Keith Franklin, Bang The Party were one of the first UK groups to capture the acid house explosion as it found a foothold in the legendary RIP parties and other seminal early spots. Their sound bridges the gap from the prior rare groove warehouse scene and gives it a sweaty Chicago injection, and it's captured brilliantly on this, their breakthrough debut record from 1987. There's a strong soulful edge to 'I Feel Good All Over', while 'Jacques Theme' has a dreamy, surreal tint, and 'Release Your Body' channels a little Motor City flair in its twitchy synth lines and drum programming, but crucially this was one of the first indications of house and techno finding a distinct character across the pond ahead of the wider house culture that would blow up in the years that followed. Truly pioneering music.

Review: Source 02 makes the first time stepping out on wax for Lorenzo Batlle, the latest signing to emergent Uruguay label New Source. At a time when club music from the Southern Hemisphere is finally getting a little more shine, it's exciting to catch up on fresh talent bringing a different slant to the techno blueprint. There's a whiff of the spooky, schlocky sound you might hear on labels like Eya, but other melodic nuances and rhythmic tricks mark Batlle's sound out as his own. Rich, full-bodied productions that will absolutely work it in the dance - get some insight into what's coming out of Uruguay and bring something a little different to your set.
