Review: Some two years on from the release of his acclaimed, in-demand debut album, The Boat Party, Kyle Julian Hall delivers the follow-up From Joy. Intriguingly, the eight tracks come from the Kyle Hall archives, all recorded by the young producer before the turn of the decade, and is presented as a homage to where Kyle lived at the time in his father's basement on the west side of Detroit on Joy Rd. From the outset, Hall's second album is loose, melodious, heady and synthesizer-heavy, with broken beats and wild, experimental rhythms combining effortlessly with jazz, jazz-funk, boogie, soul, Herbie Hancock and '80s electro influences. It makes for thrilling and hugely enjoyable listening and offers proof of Hall's musicianship and ability to repackage a wide range of influences.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Brawther and Alixkun present a collection of 15 underground Japanese house tracks from the early days of electronic dance music, back when the genre was sweeping across the globe. Ahead of a related documentary project titled 'HOUSE' in Japanese characters, the compilation is the first to showcase the works of Japanese house on an historical and global level, with classics and rare-as-a-hen's teeth tracks. Carefully selected by Brawther and his sidekick Ailxkun, this is a nectar of deep grooves and blissful melodies that form the blueprint of the Japanese House Sound. Legends like Soichi Terada, Yukihiro Fukutomi or The Ecstasy Boys are back to back with unsung hearoes like Takecha, Magic Ware or Katsumi Hidano. Aimed at the house music lover and overall music enthousiasts, this compilation is the one stop shop of all things early Japanese House, unveiling the mystery behind it all and shining a brand new light on it, dusted and remastered, for your listening pleasure.

Review: Some 34 years after it's original release, Fingers Inc's expansive debut album, Another Side, remains one of the greatest deep house full-lengths of all time. Here, the album gets the re-master and re-issue treatment, with the original double vinyl set being expanded to a triple to guarantee loud cuts for club play. While there are plenty of well-known Heard and co classics present - "Mysteries of Love", "Bring Down The Walls", "Can You Feel It" etc. - it's actually the long-forgotten album tracks that really hit the spot. It's on these moments - often influenced as much by '80s soul and synth-pop as acid and Chicago jack-tracks - that Larry Heard, Robert Owens and Ron Wilson really cut loose.

Review: For the best part of a decade, Fred Peterkin has impressed with his ultra-deep, soul-flecked take on deep house and techno. Here, his Soul People Music imprint gives birth to a new sub-label, Energy of Sound, with the New York producer delivering a double-pack's worth of previously unreleased cuts. Naturally, the standard is abnormally high throughout, with Peterkin variously serving up sumptuous, dreamy fare ("Down Under", the San Francisco '90s deep house revivalism of "Don't Be Afraid"), chunkier deep house rollers ("Memory P"), crunchy dub house ("Dub In The Sky"), and throbbing, tech-tinged brilliance ("Tokyo To Chiba" and the European-sounding "Sybian").

Junktion - "Breakfast At Midnight" (5:19)
Daniel Leseman - "On My Mind" (6:15)
Review: Hans Peeman (Junktion) and Daniel Leseman's Outplay is strictly committed to spreading the gospel of deep house music and this sermon comes courtesy of the aforementioned, with a bit of help from Laurence Guy. He appears first with the title track, which samples a pretty breathtaking strings section mixed with a spangling Derrick May style synth melody which fades out and gives way to a pretty wicked arpeggio... and some cowbells; sold already? Next up is Junktion with "Breakfast At Midnight" an offering of deep and dusty late night disco that certainly takes its cues from KDJ, but that's totally fine by us. The Brame & Hamo remix is more dancefloor friendly, slo-mo deep house that fans of Genius of Time or MCDE will appreciate. Finally Leseman's "On My Mind" offers us another deep and dusty house gem that revels in its beautifully sombre Motor City vibes. Not bad for a guy from Utrecht!

Review: Inspired by dazzling reefs and swaying palm trees, Micronesia makes its debut with a fresh and captivating collection of deep cuts. While Purpura's "Touch" is an intricate and tripped out excursion, superbly combined with a contagious rhythm, LK's "Hot Coffee" is a lustfully crafted piece of slow house with an hypnotic drive. On the flip side, Blaktronix (aka Lady Blacktronika), delivers a luscious and soul-filling beatdown track. Rudolf C closes the record with "First boats", a groovy joint with a seductive feel.

Moon Circuitry (6:40)
Escape On The Lodge Freeway (8:25)
Review: This year, Theo Parrish seems to be doing his best to breathe new life into the careers of broken beat-era producers and musicians. Having previously released an excellent EP from Dego and Kaidi Tatham on Sound Signature, his latest missive comes from one-time conscious hip-hop producer Ge ology and one-time go-to jazz keys-man Mark De Clive-Lowe. The latter's brilliant synthesizer and piano work is arguably the highlight of both tracks here. On the spacey, P-funk influenced space-house swing of "Moon Circuitry" he does his best impression of Herbie Hancock, while "Escape On The Lodge Freeway" boasts intricate jazz solos atop a slightly tougher, chunkier deep house groove. Both tracks are, of course, impeccable.

Don't Stop (Let It Go) (feat Izzi Dunn) (7:18)
Save It Til Later (4:49)
Review: Assisted by long-time studio partner Kaidi Tatham, former 4 Hero man Dego's been on fire of late, delivering killer singles - and a fine album - for the likes of Eglo and Rush Hour. Here he pops up on Neroli again with more superb, soul-flecked dancefloor fare. "Don't Stop (Let It Go)" is particularly potent, offering a disco and jazz-funk influenced chunk of celebratory deep house laden with thrilling live instrumentation from members of "the 2000 Black family" (Tatham and others, basically). He completely flips the script on "Save It Till Later", a refreshingly rough and ready chunk of bass-heavy, acid-flecked house/techno fusion that benefits greatly for some particularly warped electronics. Darkness and light on one 12"; what's not to like?

Review: The perma quirky approach of Sex Tags man DJ Sotofett is what makes his productions so thrilling and his records so admired. Here, he pops up on Aaron 'Fit' Siegel's FIT Sound imprint, with a pair of formidable, percussion-heavy workouts. A-side "Tribute To Sore Fingers" is particularly potent, with the Sex Tags maniac layering dense African percussion over heavy, bleep-era bass and metronomic drum machine kicks. The flipside boasts a similarly drum-heavy Arabic workout, full of snaking, North African melody lines, dense ethnic hits (recorded by regular Sotofett collaborator Gilb'r) and subtle but booming electronics.

Ranging from soulful, misty-eyed deep house to pseudo electronic funk, this Untitled EP fits right in with the sound of now - a gorgeous blend of ambient-laden house and dance music with subtle traces of Balearica. "Change The Mood", a slow-paced hip-hop kinda cut, is actually our favourite and it fully represents Renato P as a beat-maker. Gritty beats, sexy melodies, and good vibes.

Review: Joaquin "Joe" Clausell has been using the Bolla alias to deliver authentic blends of indigenous African music and winding deep house since 2005, though it was only earlier this year that he released the project's debut album. This 12" boasts extended, club-friendly versions of tracks from that full-length, the impressive Makussa. There's much to enjoy, from the toughened-up Afro-disco revivalism of "Disco Afri Co Co (Extended Version)", and intense, deep space drum workout "A Means of Communication (Freaky Dub)", to the trumpet-laden Afro-house niceness of "Wandolo Feat Bonga (Freaky Dub Extended)". Review: Munich nu-balearic crew Public Possession broaden their horizons beyond said sensibilities, but instead venture further into oddball groove territory; in this case it's Sweden. First up Born Free main man Samo DJ delivers the low slung funk groove of "Triad Board Meeting" (sounding like some creepy, old midi file.. yet not altogether unpleasant) while Baba Stilz delivers some of the weirdest deep house you'll hear this year on on "Pacific Times" and "Beirut" respectively. Review: The fifth release on the ever-improving Church label comes from Chaos In The CBD, a duo who switched from sweatier, bumpin' flavours to deeper, jazzier pastures via a fine recent EP on Rhythm Section International. The three tracks here are similarly blazed and musically expansive, beginning with the stargazing chords, intergalactic melodies and zippy rhythms of "Constraints of Time Travel". It's a little different to what we've come to expect, but no less thrilling. Ignorance Is Bliss (Healing Force Project remix) (8:10)
Love Lost (Musephased by Area) (13:06)
Review: When commissioning remixes, the best labels think outside the box. That's exactly what Firecracker's Lindsay Todd did when seeking out producers to rework tracks from Linkwood's excellent Expressions album. On this second 12" in an ongoing series, that faith has paid dividends. Whereas the original version of "Ignorance Is Bliss" was a warm, woozy, sun-kissed deep house affair, Healing Force Project has reinvented it as a stargazing chunk of 21st century space jazz, complete with twinkling chords, low-slung double bass and reverb-laden drum solos. The Musephased interpretation of "Love Lost" by Area sticks closer to the ultra-deep, melancholic vibe of Linkwood's original, but adds a frisson of excitement via bubbling, Detroit-influenced electronics and hypnotic rhythms.

Breaking Through The Pain Barrier (Mantra) (12:21)
Encephalomyelitis Disseminata (11:35)
Review: 2016 marks 20 years since Glibert "Gilb'r" Cohen founded Versatile Records. The Parisian imprint shows no signs of flagging despite its' vintage, and here delivers another eccentric, wildly imaginative 12". This time it's Cottam at the controls, laying down two contrasting cuts. "Breaking Through The Pain Barrier" is woozy and hypnotic, but also makes great use of off-kilter electronics, psychedelic effects and quirky, alien melodies. At times, it feels spooky, at others oddly becalmed (despite its' shuffling, densely programmed rhythms). "Encephalomyelitis Disseminata" sees Cottam explicitly reference the medical condition he was diagnosed with just as he was breaking through. Here he changes the script, basing the action around a bold, rising and falling bassline, stretched-out chords and clicking, slightly wonky percussion. It's deep house, Jim, but not as we know it.

Review: By his usually prolific standards, 2015 has been a relatively quiet year for Anthony Naples. Smacks marks the Brookyln-based producer's first vinyl outing since the release of the quietly impressive Body Pill full-length in February. Interestingly, it's a more beautiful, melody-driven affair than some of his robust dancefloor workouts. Of course, there's still plenty of club-friendly thrills to enjoy, from the hazy, bleep melodies, ethereal chords and kick-driven grooves of "Dopes To Infinity (4DM)", to the low-slung, shuffling deep house goodness of "Zitronen". Even so, it's the pleasantness and considered nature of most of the compositions that stands out, with the Detroit influenced, broken techno-meets-deep house flex of "Bonobo" proving a clear highlight.

Review: Shadeleaf Music are back in 2016 with this little house scorcher form newcomer Jonna, and it's precisely the sort of gear to wet our appetites on a Thursday morning, now anxiously counting down the clock till the weekend, and some much needed shaking. "Through The Night" moves the groove in fine style with a funky bassline and a soulful touch, but "Without Drugs" gives us our deep house fix - minus the narcs, of course - and "Music For People" drops a wet, slamming guitar bassline over distant samples and gorgeous drums. Detroit's very own Kai Alce - long-time Omar S collaborator - gives us a remix of "Through The Night", alongside KZR's own wonderful dub version. Lovely.

Review: Warren 'Wbeeza' Brown follows artists like DJ Qu and John Daly to deliver an EP on the label arm of the Secretsundaze organisation. The release starts with the grubby, mucky rhythm of "Black Moon", with Brown covering it in layer upon layer of dirty sound effects. "Like Butta" inhabits a totally different place, and has more in common with US garage; the drums and snares are crisp and sharp and the musical elements sound very jazz-influenced. For his final track, "Ferguson" take another turn; this time, it's towards acid trax, with Wbeeza applying his own subtle take on rolling Chicago drums to a bouncy 303 line.

Himself and Chicago's Khalil Anthony are remixed by the equally consistent Jimpster, who delivers the goods by laying down some utter tech house quality on "Take U 2 My House", while Brooklyn-based Sound Signature man Ge-ology takes on "Jus Anutha Wunna Deez", and comes out the other end with a murky, beat-heavy house monster that bumps so perfectly along. Review: Francis Inferno Orchestra, known to his close friends and Griffin James, is one of Melbourne's finest house producers, and this guy is repping Oz hard, alongside the lies of Dro Carey and the Butter Sessions crew. He returns to Superconscious with "Kalamari Desert" and "Harmony" on side A of the plate; the former is a dreamy, broken remnant of a house tune, while the latter chugs forwards with wholesome drum programming and angelic melodies. On the B-side, "Kamakama" produces the first hint of something more moody, a little darker and more evil thanks to those gargling stutter basslines; Butter Sessions resident Sleep D provides the remix action, and comes through with flying colours after an injection of something a little funkier into the mix,

Review: And just like that, Sounds Of The City bring out a new Walt J EP! The label is fast becoming recognised for its ability to force mythical house producers from Chicago back into the studios after decades of hiatus, and we still don't know how they manage it! After Brian Harden's recent stormer, this three-tracker by the great Walt J is just what we need to sooth our evenings - a strong beat winds into starry melodies and forward-thinking percussion on "Test Your Limits", while "Simplicity (The Atkins tribute)" calls all stations to Detroit and lays down some utter truth; it's exactly the sort of house music we want to hear...bald, fiery, and deep as hell. Review: Finale Underground is back with Vol. 3 and this time the focus in on Chicago. Four tunes from Chicago luminaries that have made their marks in the scene, though all sounding different, still staying true to the Chicago ethos. Specter's deep house jam called "5th of Hen" with its lush sounds and steady melodies sets the tone. Chicago Skyway follows with a club banger titled "Digits LG" where the pulsating synth takes up the attention, giving an old school feel with contemporary string sounds. Hakim Murphy starts the B side with "Slowdown", an acid house tune that shows off some of Murphy's drum programming skills. Finally, Steven Tang finishes the session with an the tune of aggressive synth lines and a bouncy bass called "String Tension". Future Chicago is a well rounded ep that features four different takes on the current affairs of the Chicago sound.

As usual, Aquarama sees him exploring the deeper, more melancholic side of house music, with typically impressive results. The headline attraction is undoubtedly a stellar rework of Peven Everett's 2001 soulful house classic "I Can't Believe I Loved Her", which Moonin has successfully turned into a misty-eyed chunk of melodious, bittersweet deep house bliss. Deep, jazzy and undulating, much of it sounds like a cross between Moodymann, the smoky fare served up recently on Rhythm Section International, and the disco-tinged, oddball house goodness associated with some Sex Tags Mania output.
