Areal Earth (dub) (6:09)
Review: Public Possession welcomes back Aroma Pitch for another four tracker that bares all their usual hallmarks - namely lots of warm analogue sounds that unite everything from driving to Balearic beats via big room nu-disco and playful in-between sounds. 'Millennium Surfer' opens with a wash of gently twirling synth arps and 80s drums, there is a fantastically bubbling bassline and dubby feel to 'Balearic Shift', while 'Staub Groove' is a more thumping house cut with weird synth textures. Without doubt it is closer 'Areal Earth (dub)' that wins the EP with its ethereal pads, dreamy vibes and smooth dub house low end.

Can U Feel It
On The Spectrum
Lucky
Shower Scene (Extra Steam)
Time Slips Away
Review: Bell Towers' solo dancecraft has always had a knowing sense of transcendence to it, one that refuses merely to fan-serve 'floors, and which rather prefers to challenge the listener ever so subtly, all while still keeping the sound thoroughly pleasurable. After a six-year hiatus on the front of disco edits, Towers (not his real name, FYI) returns with a third addition to the Buro Hahn, his patented series for just that endeavour, resident on the Munich label Public Possession. Though we don't know their origins, 'Can U Feel It' and 'On The Spectrum' bring an expertly sheeny, filter-happy suggestiveness to each original, the latter of which is an especially sultry verging on lecherous song. 'Lucky' is comparatively but happily cheugy, conferring something of the vibe of an obscure Japanese sitcom's title sequence, while 'Shower Scene (Extra Steam)' rounds things off on a note of bemusement with an excellent 90s-style vocaloid house number. The last track especially is a need-to-know sample source, internet searches of which still nonetheless come up empty. Could it be you who finds it?

Review: Munich's Public Possession label returns with an lovely EP by new London-based outfit Birthday. The pop duo was founded in 2016 by RIP Swirl & Fake Laugh. Having had some great feedback on their first releases, they took a break to focus on their solo projects and other endeavours in and around the music industry, but make their comeback on Powerhouse. With the sweet as candy ditties like "Slug", to hazy and vaporised drifters like 'Locally Lost' or moments of sublime weirdo humour as heard on 'Chocolate For Breakfast' this could well be the most awesome comedown album of 2020.

Big Beat Manifesto Vol IX
Cat: PP 101. Rel: 19 Jul 24

Minimal/Tech House
Wrangler (with Andras)
Obsession (with Mayurashka)
Calvin Klein (with Matisa)
Review: Melbourne's Eden Burns has been publishing their 'Big Beat Manifesto' in vinyl form for a good while now. We'd'n't've predicted a musical style popularised by Norman Cook warrants manifesto-penning on a level of the Dadaists, Futurists or Stuckists, but hey, we won't complain, cos the music is sick. And it hardly sounds like your typical 'big beat' either. Nah, this is more a tricksy, comical clubsploitation hat-trick, verging - if you must tease a genre name - dubby tech house, moving into locomotive techno. Andras and Eden Burns' 'Wrangler' begins on a recondite note, with a faint vocal sample suggesting ideas of wanting to be in on an impossible joke. Desire turns to 'Obsession' on the A2, pon which a central monotone resounds like the toot of a steam train, while the B1, 'Calvin Klein' blithely indulges the tech house underwear brand sponsorship deal through chuggy womps and further, sultry vox cutups.

Review: DDWY appeared on Public Possession label earlier in the year when they put out their Chill Pill compilation and their contribution was the perfectly balearic dance gem 'Orchard'. Now the pair is back with a limited edition album, Sprig Songs. It lays out their distinctive take on dance music which is dubbed out and trippy, often slow paced, doused in proggy melodies and all flavoured with unique Nangis chants. The spell binding selection includes the warped rhythms and FX of 'Green Villa' and otherworldly depths of 'Do Deers Dream?' while 'Hair Spiders' is a more dancefloor ready and dubbed out beatdown.

Flow My Tears (6:14)
Super Mana Drain (5:18)
Warp World (7:39)
Review: Venetian self-described "avant garde conservative" Simone De Kunovich is back to quickly follow up his last outing in March with a new electro EP on Public Possession. He also ended last year on a high with the final part of his Mondo Nuovo series and seems to be in full creative flow again here. 'Flow My Tears' is an old school throwback with sugary 80s synths sounds and lush cosmic arps, then 'Super Mana Drain' local into a chugging Italo disco vibe that will get hands in the air as it travels to the stars. 'Warp World' is a more heavy thumper but still one defined by its bright and colourful synth work.

Review: Aussie outback dwelling sculptor/producer DJ Chrysalis now delivers his debut EP proper for Public Possession, after appearing on their Chill Pill series. Strong spiritual vibes and ancient cosmic visions aplenty across five tracks on What Came First & Why Does It Matter. Whether it's the dusty acid trip of 'Melodie', the mesmerising title track which levitates into beatless downtempo territory, to the off-kilter deep house of 'Spag East' and the emotive atmosphere of closing track 'Algi' that's perfect for those heads-down moments on the dancefloor.

Pot Red
Review: Melbourne's Nice Girl (real name Ruby Kerkhofs) has been of the Public Possession family for four years. In that time, she's released a handful of admirable singles and a pair of albums that showcase her distinctive, attractive and well-crafted take on house music. On Yummy, her third full-length, Kerkhofs continues on this theme, bouncing between autotune-sporting electronic colour (the blissful 'Walk In Walk Out'), heady and hypnotic, techno-tempo beauty ('Departure'), deep synth-pop ('My Feeling'), sun-splashed, saucer-eyed lusciousness ('Sonething'), sparkling electronic ambience ('Take a Break', '49'), cheeky nu-disco ('Watcha Do') and high-octane boundary-blurring cheeriness ('Yummy'). Best of all, though, is the techno-meets-progressive house joy of killer closing cut 'Pot Red').

Review: Sano has been away for a four-year hiatus but now makes a great return. Their first outing of this new era is Volume IV of Latino Body Music which comes at you from the green hills of Colombia, out of the jungle and into your speakers then into your affections. These heavy rhythms are suitable for mind, body and soul and draw on house, disco and funk. 'Si Te Doy Un Beso' is deep, 'Tu Para Mi' is raw and cosmic, 'No Seas Loca' is languid and loose and 'Nuevas Emociones' has tripped out synths from another dimension. Vince Void's 'Unit Call'

Review: Shame On Dry Land (Syndabocken) is an award-winning Swedish movie that picked up the Guldbagge prize for best feature film soundtrack in 2024. That soundtrack has been written and produced by sometime Studio Barnhus associate and mythical young artist Baba Stiltz. It arrives on vinyl for the first time here and is a dense affair with plenty of esoteric stylings as you would expect of a man with a famously hard-to-pin-down sound. It goes from heavy and dark to airy and Mediterranean and needs to be heard nice and loud for the best effect.

Review: You can always count on Public Possession to put out quirky, ear-catching gear for switched on dancefloors. On this occasion they've tapped up Wolfram and Josh Ludlow for this tongue-in-cheek acidic stomper which is roundly defined by the robotic narrator demanding we go back and forth to the club ad infinitum. It's cheeky and a tonne of fun, with a deadly 707-toting beat to back it up, presented in snappy edited form on the A-side and stretched out in extended form on the flip. If you want to get the party popping off with a glint in your eye, this is just the record you need.
