Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

We're never short of new Ricardo Villalobos material and he's generous with his time as a mixer, but this project offers something different from the Chilean mad scientist of minimal. A Mountain Of One are a duo who deal in Balearic-leaning pop with a subtle charm and an adventurous spirit, and they initially approached Villalobos for a single remix of one of their tracks. As a fan of their sound, Villalobos ran with the project and it wound up as a full remix album of seven different versions. On the earlier tracks Ricardo takes a surprisingly light touch, while the later stages find us knee deep in the mesmerising roll of his minimal house, shot through with dubbed out ingredients from the original songs. It's surprising and satisfying in equal measure, showing Villalobos at his best and quite the scoop for A Mountain Of One.

Asiko (In A Silent Mix) (Ricardo Villalobos remix - part 1) (15:31)
Asiko (In A Silent Mix) (Ricardo Villalobos remix - part 2) (13:42)
Review: Tony Allen's "Asiko", the leading tune on his 1999 LP Black Voices, has been a favourite of our regardless of impeding remixes, reworks, or reissues. It's still a pinnacle of the future jazz movement, blowing everything else out the water in the process. Rightfully, Holland's Dekmantel have decided to resurrect its timeless qualities and to give German-Chilean legend Ricardo Villalobos the tools to deliver some reinterpretations. Thanks to Honest Jon's Records, the two have already worked together, and Villalobos' ritualistic percussion has proven to work wonders next to Allen's legendary drumming and arrangmements. In short, it's as if they were made for each other - two ends of the spectrum that merge beautifully. The firs remix is moody, funky, and absolutely lit, banging out hypnotic drums over deep bass and glitch sonics, while the second part strips the beats out in favour of more wide-eyed melodics, infused with a futuristic style of jazz that is prone to opening minds. Warmly recommended.

Hubris Variation (part 1) (14:16)
Hubris Variation (part 2) (13:12)
Review: Given that Ricardo Villalobos was one of a handful of guest producers who featured on Oren Ambarchi's recent Hubris album - a krautrock-influenced minimalist techno exploration that also boasted contributions from Jim O'Rourke and Mark Fell, amongst others - it seems fitting that he's been roped in to provide two new remixes. The Chilean's contribution to the album was largely rhythm-based, and his two lengthy Variations - each stretched across one side of wax - promote undulating, heads-down dancefloor hypnotism above all else. Naturally, his drum programming and use of subtle stylistic shifts is as on-point as ever, with Ambarchi's original textures being manipulated into mind-altering new shapes.

Funf Viertel (16:05)
Down (12:50)
Review: Remarkably, this 12" marks the first release from Germany's Otherside label since 2014. It comes courtesy of two of techno's most storied producers, German studio wizard Butch and minimal legend Ricardo Villalobos. There's a pleasingly fluid and melodious feel to epic A-side "Funfviertel", with Butch and Villalobos peppering an off-kilter, stripped-back techno groove with starry chords, broken electronics and humid, kalimba style melodies. On flipside "Down", the duo opts for a far denser rhythm track, which boasts layered drum hits in Villalobos's traditional South American-influenced style. Throw in a pulsing but weighty bassline and a whole heap of stereo trickery and you have another locked-in late night delight.

Balam
Review: With a dizzying catalogue of work behind both of them, Ricardo Villalobos and Butch form a partnership for the former's Sei Es Drum and the results are nothing short of startling. "Up" is a show-stopping track through and through, as a delirious synth rises constantly over some vintage 80s tom fills for a truly mind-bending experience. "Balam" by way of stark contrast is a stripped down tech house snake, putting some bubbling acid on to simmer while chopping up an intricate and persistent beat. It's high quality leftfield house for those who like their ideas fresh and freaky.

Vormlock (12:03)
Down (16:02)
Review: Disordered Rhythm Metronomy may be a puzzling (and, let's face it, rather strange) artistic alias, but the two men behind the project, Ricardo Villalobos and Edward, have produced some of the most distinctive leftfield techno of the last decade. As a result, you'd expect their first joint EP to be a killer... and it is. A-side "Vormlock" is a rubbery, off-kilter treat, with the experienced duo peppering an elastic synth bassline and sparse, skittish drums with glitchy stabs, tipsy lead lines and all manner of wonky, out-of-this-world noises. Over on the flipside you'll find title track "Down", a deeper and dreamier chunk of spacey minimalism in which typical Villalobos style percussion and softly squelching bass comes cloaked in some suitably intergalactic synthesizer chords.

Review: Jay Haze recently announced he was turning his back on the music industry, but despite his disillusionment he seems intent on signing off in style. With his latest album set to drop imminently, we are treated to this star studded12 inch entitled Collabs With Jay Haze. Ricardo Villalobos, Reboot, DJ Sneak and Brett Johnson all feature, with the joint studio sessions having all taken place at the now extinct Ultradope Syndrome studio in Berlin. The gentle bump of the Villalobos hookup "Fenlow" will understandably attract much attention, but it's the synth laden "Freak A Bitch Out", featuring the knob twiddling talents of DJ Sneak, that has us most excited, sounding like what Virgo would come with if they moved to Berlin.

Review: Using the Turkish psychedelic project Insanlar as a jump off point, Honest Jon's have enlisted Ricardo Villalobos to turn out one of his grandiose remix projects that gels so naturally with more exotic sound sources. The original of "Kime Ne" is already an enchanting, Moog-infused groover rich with traditional vocals, and then Mr Villalobos locks the ingredients in for a typically cosmic ride into stripped and hypnotic house territory, letting the lutes intertwine with dusty reams of percussion using that alchemists touch that could only come the man himself. The remix spreads itself over two sides of wax, leaving one side of the double pack free for a fetching etching as well.

Sullric (Deeper dub) (12:09)
Review: In what is surely an unexpected collaboration in the field of house and techno, Mosaic mastermind Steve O'Sullivan teams up with Ricardo Villalobos for a hypnotic trip through minimal landscapes that plays to both of their strengths. The rock-solid rhythm of "Sullric" surely belongs to O'Sullivan while the rich, subtle layers of samples, tones and other such sonic decorations come straight from the Villalobos school of production. The two mixes on this 12" only have minor differences - whichever side you drop things will get considerably deeper than they were previously. Of such ingredients are classy, immersive techno joints made.

El Malekon (13:20)
Rikileaks (11:06)
Review: Toi Toi Musik's latest salvo is something of a biggie. It brings together two stalwarts of the South American minimal techno scene: Chilean wonk-meister Ricarco Villalobos and storied Venezuelan Argenis Brito. As you'd expect, there's a humid and intoxicating feel to A-side "El Malekon", a trippy, 13-minute workout marked out by druggy, manipulated and layered spoken word samples, intricate and subtly shifting percussion programming and a restless, sub-heavy bassline. The groove is pleasingly loose and wayward, something we say a lot about Villalobos' productions in particular. Flipside "Rikileaks" is a little more locked-in, utilizing a more sturdy, tech-house style drum rhythm, mind-bending electronic effects and a more booming bassline. Curiously, it also features a vocal whose lyric includes the immortal words: "these sandwiches keep me going".

Review: Before you Villalobos fans approach a coronary at the sight of a new Ric Y Martin release, it should be noted that this Alphahouse twelve actually contains two unreleased cuts from 1999 when Schopf and Ricky were in their mnmlst pomp. Completists will snap it up without hesitation, with both "Camina Ensenada" and "Teiwass" near perfect examples of the minimal art form - delicate stripped back syncopation surrounded by scratched tones and dreamlike soundscapes that have a narcotic effect on the senses. This gets bonus points for the freaky deaky cover art from Russian artiste Varya Pavlova too.

Roric
Review: **RAUM REPRESS** The pairing of Ricardo Villalobos & Roman Flugel on Raum Musik is hardly a surprising one. Both are venerable members of the electronic music scene, and we've witnessed both artists visit minimalism, techno, house and ambience within their careers on numerous occasions. Together on Raum, "RIRom" embodies a collection of all of the above genres in one. Minimal clicks and cuts of glass are met with raw housey claps, hollow techno kicks and gentle acoustic piano chords. Chugging and never dull on the ear, it's a concoction of intelligent, stripped back structure. On the flip side "RoRic" treads slightly more theatrical boards with dark rumbling keys and twisted crackles and creeks. An ever pushing bounce of dry drums and the odd stab of keys and warped vocals keep things interesting. Very much suited to both of these artists, if you're a fan of one or both, this won't disappoint.

Why Did I Love My Wife (11:03)
Nordhorn (6:51)
Review: German label Rawax is back with a second release in Ricardo Villalobos's own reissue series. This one finds the legendary minimal man working under his Termiten Alias on 'Nordhorn,' which is a single that came originally out on LINEAR back in 2002. 'Why Did I Love My Wife' is classic Ricardo - more than 11 minutes of mind-melting hi-fidelity synth design and inventive techno rhythms with dark vocals and organic percussion. 'Nordhorn' is more spacious and empty with soothing melodies flooring about over a skeletal groove that will lock in the afters like it always has.

Why Did I Love My Wife (11:01)
Nordhorn (6:51)
Review: Way back in 2002, in the midst of his rise to global recognition, Ricardo Villalobos delivered a one-off EP for Linear as Termiten - though at the time his involvement was not widely known. It has become something of a sought-after minimal techno classic, with copies of the original 12-inch changing hands for serious sums - hence this Rawax reissue. It remains a fine record. A-side 'Why Did I Love My Wife' is Villalobos at his most propulsive - the kick-drum is pretty sturdy - while still reliably trippy, out-there and intoxicated. 'Nordhorn', a deeper affair in which melancholic melodies seemingly hang in the air over a typically wonky and loose-limbed drum track, is also superb, while 'Frank & Hennes' is a lolloping dab of downtempo psychedelia featuring samples from a heady old folk-rock jam.

Review: Tripmastaz has been on a steady rise in the realm of Berlin-rooted minimal techno, landing on labels like M_nus and working with everyone from Guti to DJ Sneak, but this collaboration undoubtedly takes the cake. Partnering with the mighty Villalobos on his own Respect The Craft label, Tripmastaz shows us just why we should be paying attention, as he draws Ricardo into some of the most incisive club cuts he's put his name to in a fair while. From the hip-hop flex courtesy of SNVRS on 'Rise' to the wild jazzy skronk of 'Mastardo', there's a loose and freaky party energy to these cuts which gels so well with Villalobos' trademark trippiness.

Review: Established last year, Lisbon label Assemble Music has been making ripples in minimal circles with their output from Dorian Paic, Daze Maxim and St. Joseph. This fourth release should engender something akin to a wave of appreciation as Ricardo Villalobos continues his fruitful collaborative streak with the two track Veric 12" in conjunction with Vera Heindel. Review: Originally released in 1998, the title track is a hypnotic, rolling groove that helped shape the genre's future, its deep, pulsating rhythm and intricate layering exemplify Villalobos' signature style, making it a crucial piece in minimal's evolution. The Mood Mix on the flip stretches 'Heike' into a 13-minute odyssey, pushing its elements further into hypnotic terrain. Subtle shifts in percussion and melody build an entrancing, underground energy, capturing the essence of late-90s minimalism. This version transforms the track into a slow-burning, immersive journey, reinforcing why it became a staple in underground sets. Both cuts highlight Villalobos' early genius, demonstrating his ability to craft intricate, groove-heavy compositions with an enduring appeal.

Review: Ricardo Villalobos wasn't always the cult figure he is today. At the start of his career he was an underground producer still finding his feet and fomenting his own sound. It was in the first decade of his career that he cooked up this tune and had what is about as close as he will ever get to a techno anthem. 'Heike' rides on big drums with detuned synth lines layered up next to female vocal coos, pixelated synth modulations and prying bass. Its a mental workout as much as a physical one and still bags today, which his why it gets this reissue on Rawax alongside the Mood Mix on the flip which is more dubby and dialled back into to deeper beats.

In the sprawling tendrils of minimal mastery Ricardo Villalobos has attached his name to, it's not always easy to pick out the stone cold classics. 2003 album Alcachofa is, however, a stand out moment from his career when he proved to be more than just a club 12" artist. Sure, the record is mainly driven by house rhythms, but this was a demonstration of the creative power within the minimal approach and Villalobos could get creative more than most. Originally released on Playhouse and now repressed on four 12"s by Perlon, it's a fitting tribute to a landmark record, now with added tracks from the accompanying Alcachofa Tools 12".

'808 The Bassqueen' is a truly mesmerising sonic journey that pushes the boundaries of electronic music with Villalobos's trademark blend of minimal techno and experimental soundscapes. The title track sees a firm kick and wood block snares forming the backbone for a drifting piano chord and sensual vocals which lead to a climax of delightfully glitchy vocoder. On the flip, "hansup" takes on a tougher groove, as sprung bass and minimal house stabs are joined by ethereal chords and twisted vocal samples.

Review: By the time he put out this expansive collection in 2007, Ricardo Villalobos was already a cult hero. His second album Alcachofa was an underground smash that introduced us all to a brand new take on minimal, and he had already laid down the blueprint for super mega long tunes with his epic 15 minute plus Fizheuer Zieheuer in 2006. This second reissue clears up some of the quality issues with the first and means all seven of the idiosyncratic tunes shine. They are string, stripped back by dynamic techno grooves with Latin percussion and fizzing static, tripped out sine waves and modulated synth patterns that will never be bettered.

Who Are We? EP

Minimal/Tech House
Buffalo Demon (feat Alog) (9:57)
Who Are You? (feat Jorge Gonzalez) (8:58)
Review: A return to Raum Musik for Ricardo Villalobos arrives with the Chilean in the midst of one of his most creative production streaks. Who Are We lands before a mooted Vilod LP on Perlon from Villalobos and Max Loderbauer and after remixes for Honest Jon's and a contribution to the Aira Series from Roland and Rawax. It is of course his second 12" for Raum following the classic Baby from 2012 and these two new productions find him in a collaborative mood. "Buffalo Demon" features Rune Grammofon duo Alog whilst the title track pairs Villalobos up with compatriot Jorge Gonzalez. Both are superb, but "Who Are You?" is Villalobos channelling his weirder side and that's how we like our Ricardo tracks.

Review: This one has long been described as 'peak Ricardo' or 'classic Villalobos.' It comes on the new vinyl only label arm of Berlin-based record store and distribution company black.round.twelve, who are five years in and have a fine reputation. The track itself, 'Mecker,' first appeared on Ricardo's legendary 2007 Fabric mix but has never been officially released. 14 years on it still sounds as wonderful weird and avant-garde as ever. The drums twist and turn, the elastic synths pop and ping and the whole thing is perfect head-wrecking material.

Neunachi EP

Minimal/Tech House
Neunachi (13:10)
Detrant (12:54)
Review: By now, we should know what to expect from Chilean minimalist Ricardo Villalobos, namely eccentric, off-kilter rhythms subtly influenced by his south American heritage, smooth but impactful bass, a smattering of weird electronic noises and mangled vocal samples pulled from the depths of an imagined K-hole. You get that in spades on 'Neunachi', the 13-minute lead cut from his latest Rawax double-header. It's classic Villalobos with a nightmarish twist - all backwards vocal samples, brain-melting rhythmic elements and subtle shifts of sonic emphasis. Flipside 'Detrant' is no less odd, though the skittish machine beats underpinning the collage of South American samples and wayward noises is pretty sturdy and straightforward. Of course, the track itself is anything but straightforward, but that's always been a big part of Villalobos's early morning allure.

Neunachi (13:14)
Detrant (12:55)
Review: Following the skittering, syncopated arrangements and left-handed excursions of 'Aslohop' and 'Detrant' back in September, Ricardo returns to Rawax with two more broken rhythms. 'Neunachi' is a classic Villalobos wonky shuffer with off-grid kicks and a rainbow of wet, cavernous noises. Take away the demonic reverse vocals and you're in microhouse territory. 'Detrant' is a much more driven affair, up-tempo and thicker, electro kicks off-set by a far-away chant. Each cut going the full nine yards; if ever we've had time to truly lock in to Ricardo's famously enduring grooves, it's right now. Neun out of ten.

Aslohop (12:28)
Detrand (21:00)
Review: Earlier in the year, Chilean minimal maestro Ricardo Villalobos reached an agreement with Rawax for the long-established label to release a series of singles and, more remarkably, a digital-only, hour-long track called 'Matsu'. This brown, marbled vinyl 12" is the first in the sequence of singles to hit stores and contains two typically lengthy workouts. Lead cut 'Aslohop' leads the way, with Villalobos once again delivering entrancing action built around oddly programmed, distinctively swung South American drum hits, curious noises and a hypnotic, undulating bassline. Flipside 'Detrand' is an even more spaced-out and druggy affair, with various barely audible samples subtly rising and falling for 21 minutes atop another deliciously out-there rhythm track.
