When The Lights Go Down (6:24)
The Beginning (7:02)
Review: Drumcode don't just do huge-room heaters, you know. 'When The Lights Go Down' is a strong case for the label's darker side, seeing to a generous three-track contribution from Neapolitan producer and DJ Roberto Capuano. The artist eschews an overindulgence in detuned trance saws for reese basses here, preferring to revel in the wealths of space offered by repeated kick drums and large reverberative spaces - as opposed to high-endy, sizzly sounds. The title track is the star, thanks to its riveting vocal line and guard-throwing rhythmic messups, which occur at the same time.

Don't Stop
Cat: DC 287. Rel: 04 Oct 23
Don't Stop (6:05)
No Escape (6:16)
Choir's Palace (6:34)
Review: 'Don't Stop' is not only the title of this new EP from Charles D, but so too something of a mantra Drumcode label head Adam Beyer seems to live by. Its output has never really slowed despite 20 odd years of business and still it is up there with the best of the best when it comes to potent main room techno. This latest trio of tricks kick off with 'Don't Stop' which is a hard edged banger with buzzing and serrated synths. 'No Escape' is another raw cacophony of sound with dark vocals lost in the synth storms and 'Choir's Palace' sets down with some slightly trance-like energy that will get hands in the air.

A Sides Vol 12 Part IV
Cat: DC 293V4. Rel: 27 Feb 24
Chris Avantgarde - "The Last Time" (7:31)
Bry Ortega - "Discover 9" (6:08)
Massano - "Betraya" (6:05)
Spektre - "Too Far Gone" (6:35)
Review: Adam Beyer's notable techno label Drumcode seems to be as busy as ever of late. The label here rolls out a fourth part of its ongoing A Sides series, which is now up to volume 12. Though the Swede himself doesn't feature, some of his trusty sidemen do starting with Chris Avantgarde who brings big room, hard techno energy to 'The Last Time'. Bry Ortega keeps it just as intense with the machine-gun like synth fire of 'Discover 9', Massano brings some brighter synth loops to the stomping 'Betraya' and Spektre shut down with a mix of hardcore, trance and techno potency on 'Too Far Gone.' Some great DJ weaponry here, for sure.

Camargue 2019: Part One
Cat: DC 210. Rel: 23 Oct 19
Camargue 2019 (Maceo Plex remix) (6:35)
Camargue 2019 (6:58)
Camargue 2019 (Keith Carnal remix) (7:53)
Review: Some big name retro-futurism here, as The Advent joins forces with CJ Bolland to offer up a mighty re-make of the latter's mind-altering 1992 Belgian techno classic "Camargue". The 2019 "original mix" (A2) recreates many of the most familiar elements from the '92 version (including the rumbling bassline, US garage style stabs and evocative strings), tweaking the arrangement and adding some suitably tribal techno drums into the mix. Ironically, Maceo Plex's thumping, angry, kickdrum-driven remix is closer in tone to the now familiar "Drumcode sound", with the producer leaning towards the dark and intense. As for Keith Carnal's mix, it actually sounds like a more hypnotic, locked-in techno version of "Chime" by Orbital.

Camargue 2019: Part Two
Cat: DC 2105. Rel: 23 Oct 19
Camargue 2019 (Enrico Sangiuliano remix) (8:13)
Camargue 2019 (Adam Beyer & Layton Giordani remix) (7:14)
Camargue 2019 (The Advent remix) (6:15)
Review: Released simultaneously with a 12" containing the original version of the Advent and CJ Bolland's joint re-make of the latter's 1992 Belgian techno classic "Camargue", this second EP boasts a trio of undeniably tough remixes that will definitely set the pulse racing of anyone who loves the Drumcode label. The standout version comes from Adam Beyer and Layton Giordani, who pepper a hybrid house/techno groove with Bolland's original organ stabs, strings and metallic bassline. The Advent delivers a tougher but arguably deeper techno mix - it's very hypnotic - while Enrico Sangiuliano joins the dots between techno, trance and old school flavours.

Layton Giordani & HI-LO - "Rabbit Hole" (6:39)
Charles D - "Traction" (7:36)
Review: Drumcode and its Swedish founder Adam Beyer have rather become synonymous with big room sounds known as business techno. They don't do anything to shed that tag here with two more epic sounds designed to wash over vast crowds in the world's largest super clubs. Layton Giordani & HI-LO aka Oliver Heldens kick off with 'Rabbit Hole' which is a wall of grainy synth and rolling drums that is simple but effective. Charles D's 'Traction' is another coarsely textured techno roller with splashes of industrial synth and a general sense of subtle elevation.

Jay Lumen - "Galactic Rainbow" (7:15)
Thomas Schumacher & Caitlin - "Qadash" (6:21)
Zimmz - "Tension" (6:23)
Review: The mighty Drumcode label keeps on serving up those business beats with this 10th volume of A-Sides. The clue is in the title really - a collection of big hitting techno tunes designed for large plus at peak time. Jay Lumen kicks off with the hammering kicks and made synth melodies of 'Galactic Rainbow', which is sure to make any floor march. Thomas Schumacher & Caitlin then come together for the machine gun synths of 'Qadash' and its sleek, rolling drums, and completing the trio is Zimmz with the deeper, more dark and atmospheric 'Tension' which does exactly what it says on the tin.

Miss Monique - "City Boy" (6:07)
Chelina Manuhutu - "Amsterdam Rave" (5:31)
Anna Reusch - "Let Me Take You There" (6:21)
DJ Dee - "Freaking Out" (5:23)
Review: The always hard-hitting Drumcode kick off a new series here under the name Elevate. It welcomes new school techno tastemakers to serve up their own scintillating main room sounds with Siona label boss and prog house 2.0 figurehead Miss Monique going first. Her serene chords douse you in trance tinged lushness as the deep beats roll on. Chelina Manuhutu's 'Amsterdam Rave' is a more rock solid warehouse roller and Anna Reusch runs with that vibe on her booming, all-consuming techno kicker 'Let Me Take You There'. There is then some flashy acid lines from DJ Dee on her 'Freaking Out'. A fine, all-female fronted EP from Drumcode.

Nicolas Taboada - "Circles" (6:24)
BEC - "Vibration" (6:21)
Avision - "Find Myself" (6:23)
Cosmic Boys - "I'm A Robot" (6:51)
Review: First cropping up in 2012, the mammoth A-Sides series from the titanic Swedish techno label Drumcode charges ahead into its 11th installment (can you believe it?) while also managing to split said installment alone across seven slices of vinyl. This is the fourth record of seven in part eleven. Only gigantic-room techno could justify this waxen audacity; the music is braggadocious to boot, with contributions from Nicolas Taboada, BEC, Avision and Cosmic Boys. The tracks here are as dreamy as they are goosebump-inducing, easily seguing between massive transitions and drops to cathartic reesebound trances.

Self Portrait
Review: In the four years since he delivered his debut album, Save My Soul, Italian musician Joseph Capriati has done a lot of developing as a producer. Whereas that aforementioned debut rarely broke away from the confines of heavy machine music, this belated follow-up takes a more widescreen approach. Of course, straight-up techno is still his bread and butter - see "Easy Come, Easy Go", "Basic Elements" and the robust "Naked" - but it's arguably the album's more downbeat offerings that really stand out. On the rare occasions that Capriati does break away from his darkroom formula, such as on the picturesque futurism of "Fratello" and dreamy electronica of "Self Portrait", the results are never less than spellbinding.
