Rarefied Air (Steven Tang Dense Air reprise) (6:10)
Review: Given the talent involved, you'd expect this collaboration between Detroit veteran Keith 'K-Dub' Worthy, Steven Tang and Jamal 'Hieroglyphic Being' Moss to be rather special. Predictably, it's excellent. The A-side boasts two versions of "Rarefied Air" from Worthy, who delivers nothing short of emotion-rich Detroit techno brilliance, complete with bouncy synth bass, swirling deep space melodies and restless percussion. The Dub, in particular, is superb. On the flip, Moss makes the track raw and uncompromising, layering twisted acid lines atop a thumping, tribal techno groove. Tang closes proceedings with a version that sits somewhere between the two schools, placing a long spoken word vocal sample atop mind-bending electronics, spacey chords and hissing percussion.

Review: EYA's Lone Wolf sublabel continues to bring us the goods when it comes to deep, old-skool flavoured techno with a house bump. Aving cropped up on a various artists 12" on Lone Wolf last year, Ukranian producer AC130 makes a welcome return with this killer slab of party ready heat. 'Equation' plays the emotional card with its soaring pads, but up front it's a sprightly, upferrit jacker. 'Broken' has a cheekiness in its step, not least thanks to the wobbly lead chords hovering over the track. 'Planetary Vision' plies more of the bleepy, dreamy vibes without dialling back those crisp 909 drums, and then Muelsa steps up with a suitably blissed out remix of 'Equation' that slots in with the mood of the EP perfectly.

Review: In the realm of electronic music, 'In Your Face' EP by Acerbic emerges as a sonic assault that shatters boundaries and plunges listeners into an abyss of acid-tinged techno. An adrenaline-fueled shot, this four-track E.P. pulsates with raw energy and uncompromising intensity. 'In Your Face' sets the tone with its relentless 90s acid techno grooves, transporting listeners to the heart of the rave scene. Its abrasive and confrontational energy creates an atmosphere both exhilarating and intimidating. 'Assimilate' takes on a darker and more menacing persona, as the stomping beats and menacing synths evoke images of underground warehouse parties. 'I'm Fvxked' cranks up the intensity ever higher, pushing the boundaries of acid techno with its relentless pace and distorted soundscapes. The E.P. concludes with 'Never Changes', a testament to the enduring power of hardcore techno. Acerbic's In Your Face E.P. is a sonic tour de force that pushes the limits of techno music. Its aggressive and confrontational approach leaves an indelible mark on the listener. Hardcore, you know the score!

DAVE The Drummer & Phil Kershaw - "Bassline Sunset" (6:55)
Review: Hydraulix Records continues to push the boundaries of ravey techno with Va03, a four-track EP that transports listeners back to the early '90s warehouse scene with its infectious energy and relentless beats. Side 1 kicks off with Acerbic's 'Deep In Your Mind,' a heavy sci-fi pounder that channels the essence of early '90s techno rave vibes. With nods to the big Belgium sounds and a prominent Hoover sound, this track is an instant banger that commands attention on the dancefloor. Following suit, Minor Dott's 'What You Callin Acid' delivers a menacing and sinister atmosphere, characterized by its mechanical and demonic undertones. It's a track that exudes raw power and intensity, perfect for those craving an adrenaline-fueled sonic experience. On Side 2, Andreas Kraemer & Shadym team up to bring us 'Reflect,' a percussive and loopy journey through hardcore rave sounds. The track pulsates with energy, immersing listeners in a hypnotic groove that's impossible to resist. Finishing things are Dave The Drummer & Phil Kershaw's 'Bassline Sunset,' a big room rave techno anthem that hits all the right notes. With its infectious bassline and euphoric atmosphere, this track is destined to ignite dancefloors worldwide. Each track on this EP offers a unique sonic experience, making it a must-have for fans of the early 90s rave scene.

Don't Talk To Me (6:14)
Review: Los Angeles based acid freaks Absurd return with another chapter in their Acid Test series. For their 13th controlled drug trial they have tapped label staples Achterbahn D'Amour - the duo comprised of Edit Piafra and Iron Curtis. This is their seventh release for the label thus far. With this project they express their love for the raw side of Chicago house, techno and EBM but specifically the sounds of the infamous little silver box. There's some deeply aquatic trance induction on offer, with for instance the dynamic opener "Balustrade", while they channel some Donato Dozzy (who has also appeared for the label previously) styled hypnotic techno on the sinister "Dehaveland" which also gets a respectful and more powerful VC-118A remix by the always impressive Samuel Van Dijk. Finally things end on a sublime electro tip with the emotive robotic movements displayed on "Don't Talk To Me".

Harmonia
Review: Continuing their quest to bring fresh textures and atmospheres within acid-orientated music, Edit Select and Iron Curtis are back once again at Absurd Recordings under their Achterbahn D'Amour moniker. Lead track "Cardbox" is a tense cut that pivots on a brooding Moog-like bassline and uneasy sonic decoration, but built around a solid yet minimal beat that keeps everything locked down tight. Innerspace Halflife opt for an aquatic dub freak out of a remix, leaving it to "Harmonia" to smooth out the edges incurred previously with some positively floaty synth action that could almost pass for early-days Move D.

Your Love (In A Jam) (Idjut Boys acid version)
Review: Absurd Recordings maintain the standards laid down with the Tin Man & Donato Dozzy shaped brilliance of their first Acid Test release in premiering the sounds of Achterbahn D'amour. A new collaborative project between Iron Curtis and Edit Piafra, it sees the duo explore the jerked out stripped down end of the Chicago House spectrum with the sprawling stuttering acid twirl out of "Talking Acid" a definite highlight. On the flip the heroic Idjut Boys deliver two remixes of "Your Love" which hit the spot with H bomb aplomb. The guttural bass aesthetics of the spinal "Version House" proves to be a nice counterpart to the floating 303 brilliance of the "Version Acid". Free d/l code of all tracks included too!

Review: Round three of Acid Sex with label boss Matt Starr at the helm for more acid jams. What this twelve inch lacks in titular details it more than compensates with unadulterated 303 punch! The power of the A Side creeps beneath your senses slowly but with real stealth, the kaleidoscopic acid swirl steadily unfurling as the track progresses. The B Side proves to be a more immediately gratifying concoction of raw jacking 808 syncopation, viscous drips of acid and reverberant vocodered chants of .house music'. The steadily undulating undercurrent of retro Detroit strings adds some emotive depth. Starr's final acid excursion burrows deep with a simple yet effective beat engulfed by the wormhole acid line and rising synth drama.

Review: AcidLab serves up more innovative findings from their hard techno research operations courtesy of an array of uncompromising talents on this new various artists release. Acid Steve kicks off with 'Working In An Acid Lab', a straight-ahead banger with bristling percussive loops and slamming drums. Chris Liberator & Sterling Moss & Athar then combine forces to fire futuristic acid techno out of a machine gun and across the dancefloor and BadBoyPete vs Shnootz's 'Tekno Sound' is amped up and urgent drum funk. Noise Frequency then shuts down with dark distortion in 'Lost Humanity.' This is only a second drop from this new young label but one that again establishes it as a vital imprint.

Review: Some six years after debuting via a deliciously angular and energetic EP from Jaquarius and Mono-Enzyme 307, the Acid Avengers imprint notches up release number 20. Like most of the label's EPs, it's a multi-artist affair. Sometime Balkan Vinyl and Bass Assault artist Acidulant handles side A, bouncing between rushing, piano-sporting 1992 hardcore revivalism ('Super Rave'), sub-heavy deep electro haziness ('Save The Last Rave') and throbbing, arpeggio driven trance/breakbeat techno fusion ('Hauz Trax'). Voiron, who last graced the label back in 2016, takes over on the flip. The Paris-based producer first fuses glistening, spacey melodies, twisted acid lines, post-electro beats and dirty bass on 'Bon Kick Voiron', before opting for deep acid house on 'Digital Voiron Workstation' and atmospheric, Orbital-meets-'90s tech-house on 'Sugar Voiron'.

Their acid trips have assisted them in travelling (without moving) as far as Japan, Australia, Netherlands and Switzerland on this one. The acid flashback on A1 will take you back to the days of the Plastik parties at the legendary Packard Plant in Detroit, while the tunnelling and strobed-out mentalisms of "10.02" will certainly cause long term effects - at the very least it'll have you calling in sick on Monday. On the flip, strap yourself in for a wild ride on the full-throttle acid trance epic "10.03" and boldly exclaim 'stay up forever!'

Retrograde Loops (part 2)
Review: Manchester club night Project 13 expands operations in a most logical of fashions here with a new record label, wisely turning to one of their hotly tipped residents to inaugurate proceedings. You should know all about Acre's killer debut on Tectonic that just dropped and the Mancunian brings similar levels of heat and rhythmic imagination to the table on this Symbols EP. The title track is a perfect example of the exciting sounds coming from those wedged inbetween techno, bass, and dubstep, and could easily be mistaken for an unreleased Untold cut from '09. Complementing this, both "O" and "Retrograde Loops (part 2)" align more explicitly to techno, though the manner in which Acre's drums cascade chaotically around the channels are a pleasure to behold. Keep an eye on this one.

Review: Hot on the heels of Acronym's fourth full-length, the superb Malm, comes this follow-up single. It sees the ambient explorer and experimental electronica exponent move further towards dancefloor territory, delivering a quartet of hypnotic and far-out cuts inspired by distant moons and asteroid fields. Our pick is probably the mind-altering "Hydraulic Fracturing", a combination of locked-in minimalist techno beats, tumbling electronic pulses and trippy noises that's as sci-fi sounding as they come. Others may be drawn towards the ragged, no-holds barred intensity of closer "Geoengineering" and similarly thrusting title track, or even the foreboding bass and drifting ambient electronics of fine opener "Profit at the Expense of Earth". In other words, it's all rather good,

Review: It would be fair to say that this latest release from Spain's long running Semantica imprint takes no prisoners. Acroonym's title track, in particular, is the kind of industrial-flecked, mind-altering techno that doesn't so much overwhelm you, as beat you into submission. While similarly trippy and hypnotic closer "Mimers Brunn" is similarly minded, Acronym at least offers a little respite in between. So, "Jotunheim" is a deep, clandestine techno bubbler complete with spooky chords, electro-influenced percussion and sparse melodies, while "Nifelheim" expertly pairs drawn-out, one-note chords with dense, rolling rhythms. Strangely, it's actually kind of dreamy, albeit in a slightly inebriated way.

Review: Acronym is definitely a staple of Scandinavian techno powerhouse Northern Electronics and delivers the goods once again on the Guadalquivir EP. The trippy and swirling synth modulations on "Purity" provide truly mind melting goodness over its slamming electro beat. "Floating" (by comparison) is less intense yet equally more cerebral on this slow burning smack techno excursion. On the flip, "Constant Flow" is without doubt the highlight on here; this truly evil and all-consuming trip is one of the best examples of how great hypnotic techno is done, this side of Mike Parker or Donato Dozzy. Final offering "Cleansed In Fire" goes back to the young artist's original sound as heard on earlier releases for the label such as the Red River Gum or Nautilus EPs. Listen and learn!

Walk Below The Waters (7:13)
Wandering Aimlessly (6:56)
Review: Between Northern Electronics, Semantica, and Dimensional Exploration, techno deviant Acronym has built himself quite a reputation for conjuring the coldest, most mechanical sort of techno. In case you didn't get it, we think he's a master at the genre, and he's right up there on our list of favourite contemporaries alongside the likes of Abdulla Rashim. This new EP comes courtesy of the fledgling Auxiliary label, and it starts off by setting a cinematic scene through the hollow sounds of "Final Descent", a placid glow of harmonies which transform into an apocalyptic chain of metallic percussion on "Endless Horizon". "Walk Below The Waters" continues this mood on the flipside, thanks to a jittering artillery of drums and hi-hats that have been glued together by the raucous, minimalistic melodies suspended in the mid-end of the tune, only to be washed-out in the comparatively more diluted and tranquil whirlpool called 'Wandering Aimlessly".

He ventures deep into the void on the cavernous and glacial title track, before releasing you into freefall on the sublime ambient journey 'Albanova' on side A. Turn the disc over and you're treated to one more beatless excursion in the form of the glassy-eyed and bittersweet 'Flashing LED' that would make even John Beltran sit up and notice.

Review: There's plenty to get excited about with the emergence of Swedish deep techno operator Acronym, as has been demonstrated on the laid bare, haunting twelves in the Dimensional Exploration series and an appearance on Northern Electronics. This latest offering is no different, dancing a fine line between ambient drone abandon and sunken techno with arresting results. "Pelagic" may pile on plenty of drums but they're shaped so as not to disturb the thick blanket of pad that hangs over the track. "Photic" meanwhile works on a stepped kick pattern that punches through a murk of hazy, distant synths, forever caught in a hypnotic loop.
