Kino I
Kino I (dub)
Kino I (beats)
Review: An-i is the excellent new project from Doug Lee, a man previously responsible for some superb dancefloor ammo as part of TBD alongside Justin Vandervolgen, as well as working with Lovefingers on more mellow fare as The Stallions. If you were one of the lucky few to grab his Bad News 12" with LIES don Ron Morelli then you'll be ready for the haywire nature of the Kino-i EP. Finding a perfect home on Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax, the EP sees the Berlin based producer indulge his machine love on three variations of the same track that almost explode off the wax - must check for fans of Nation, LIES, Mathematics. Pressed up on fluorescent 160gm yellow vinyl and housed in a high gloss black and white sleeve.

The Dark Knight
Promise Of Peace
Reboot
Big Girls
Review: Sect returns to the heart of the history once more. Chicago's legacy is finally represented on the label by one of the finest producers of this city and sound, DJ Skull. Words can't do justice to the legacy of this legend of house and techno music. For almost three decades Skull has produced of some of the finest dancefloor tracks ever made, be it through Saber (Trax), DJAX, Hybrid, Majesty Recordings, Tresor, or many others. Here the Dark Knight offers four very special cuts that reaffirm his legendary status. The title track combines the most up-to-date techno production techniques with the inimitable Chicago jacking sound. "Promise Of Peace" retrieves traditional house values on the mellower end of the musical scale, while "Reboot" gets back to the straight-up techno, with some nicely understated acid elements; and finally "Big Girls" is informed by both reggae dub and forward thinking techno.

The Boundary
The Nowhere Land
Roche Lobe
There Was A Star In The Sky
Review: The first release for Silent Season and Edoardo Zerbinati, aka Edanticonf, for 2014 is The Boundary Of Nowhere Land EP, a four-track excursion through naturalistic ambience mixed with synthy, trance-like textures and a layering of dub techno. It's Zerbinati's third release for the British Columbian label following his Planet EP and Forest Echo album of 2012 that featured title track edits from Adbullah Rashim and Iori. This EP begins with "The Boundary" which dives head first into a swell of '90s inspired trance, and techno beats, with off beat claps adding extra momentum. "The Nowhere Land" removes any airiness of its predecessor, replacing it with whistley chimes and more percussion, while "Roche Lobe" is a heavy yet reduced version of the latter with the addition of solidified keys and chord progressions. The EPs closing track, "There Was A Star In The Sky", is a croaking piece of ambient cinema that sounds like a mic was secretly hidden on the lake that featured on the cover of Segue's CD-album Pacifica for Silent Season.

All To The Cosmos, Let's Go!
Hot Legs
A Wandering Sense Of Disillusionment
Review: The secretive Blacknecks project emerged last year claiming to be the "new, anonymous side project of two prominent UK garage producers & remixers, known for remixing a string of top 40 singles, as well as having their own minor hit in the late noughties." The label's press release for its fourth record sees the tongue of whoever is behind Blacknecks staying firmly in cheek, stating, "following a failed demo submission to Mad Decent (note to Diplo - we can hold a grudge a VERY long time...) Blacknecks decide to self release their crossover mega hit "To The Cosmos, Let's Go!", while further explaining the EP effortlessly showcases their two-step production prowess, by not even needing to call upon it. "To The Cosmos, Let's Go!" opens this fourth Blacknecks transmission and sits alongside "Hot Legs" and what could be seen as a parody of the current vogue for deathly techno titles in "A Wandering Sense of Disillusionment Eats the Soul within this Decomposing Establishment of Pain and Suffering (Bollocks to the Custard, Where's the Suet Pudding edit)."

Slain
Untitled
Marked
Untamed
Review: The Trilogy Tapes continue to slay all in their path, with TTT015 featuring four slabs of suffocating sonics from Oliver Vereker. The pair of records for LIES last year ensured Oliver graduated from Professor Morelli's class of 2013 with honours, whilst the young San Francisco-based producer was also spotted duking it out with Florian Kupfer on one of those blink-and-you-missed-it Russian Torrent Versions platters. If you picked up on one of those records you will know what to expect from Slain, which begins in particularly crepuscular form with the title track, as the ghostly remains of Detroit electro are dragged straight to hell. This sense of claustrophobia remains throughout, with pressure seemingly exerted on each lurching drum beat - the woozy box jam "Marked" is the one exception and our personal highlight.

B-Ultras
Neu Beat
B-Ultras (Jamie Paton remix)
Review: Collaborations are often the fortune of timing. With Andy having moved on since closing the Dissident label to launching his Cave Paintings project to Tim's departure from Battant and striking out as Andrew Weatherall's engineer and soon to be co-member of The Asphodells, an alliance was born between the two to undertake a series of live jam sessions at each's respective studios. A love of new wave, new beat, UK Bleep and Detroit techno all feature in B-Ultras and the aptly titled, Neu Beat. Both cuts are heavily soaked in the pitch black, smoke machine funk and strob-laden fug of Andy's (and co-hort Joe Hart) infamous World Unknown dancefloor. Running at around 10 minutes the tracks are essentially an examination of acid house's ideals. Clattering hats, throbbing basslines, stabbing keys and doses of 303. Keeping it pretty simple but all about a pure groove on and on. Backing these up is a remix of B-Ultras from Jamie Paton that accentuates the groove and drags the acid deeper down to some B-boy Dub throwdown - with more to follow from all protagonists in 2014.

Don't Cry For Me Argentina (No Compromise mix)
Review: Off Minor Recordings continues to be a family affair. Launched by Jordan 'Jordash' Czamanski with some solo material under his Crybaby J alias, the label then turned to the evidently sizeable archives of Move D for the excellent EP The KM20 Tapes. Here Czamanski and Moufang team up with Gal 'Juju' Aner for some rare, recorded output from their improvised hardware project Magic Mountain High. The Tiny Breadcrumbs EP begins with the low-end buzz and hi-end hiss of "Suub" which is met by elongated kicks and an octave changing synth tone. It's "Riptide", though, that gives us the first taste of techno musicality associated with the trio, coming in the form of an aquatic synth loop, and later, complimenting pads. Over on the B-side, "Avalanche", with its white-noise impersonating wind sequences is the EP's 'club' track which sees bumbling blips pitched against an overworked 808, while respite from lo-fi rawness is presented as "Don't Cry For Me Argentina (No Compromise mix)", an intelligent slice of hardware crafted deep house.

Emotion Erode
Review: James Ruskin has of course individually collaborated with Mark Broom, as well a forming The Fear Ratio project for Blueprint, and he's worked with Regis as O/V/R, but a solo record from the boss on his own label hasn't been heard since 2009. Throughout the Silt EP, sounds from these collaborations creep in and out of the three productions, while the title-track sounds like something that would fit right into a [Phase] EP. There's a definite Warp, albeit Lakker and The Fear Ratio sonic to the melancholic "Wisdom Of Youth", while the murky slither of "Emotional Erode" is the EP's unexpected, ambient, and rhythmic dub-leaning highlight.

Age Of Iron

Seven Signs
Review: When it comes to techno, can it get any more serious than a collaboration between Ancient Methods and Orphx released on rock hard Belgian label Token? Well yes, as soon as you hear the music is does. "Age Of Iron" sounds like the sub-aqueous dub of Rich Oddie exchanging blows with an armoury of Ancient Methods percussion, while "Degenerate" is proper, rigid and heads down techno funnelled through a tubular filter. "Kali" features the same type of rolling rhythm, stop-start loops as what's heard throughout Regis' early work, only the frequency spectrums are sculpted to form a musical production, even though this is industrial techno, while "Seven Signs" croaks, clinks, and jangles like shackles scraping against concrete, sounding like something designed for dungeon clubbing - and, we might add, it's worth powering through the sonic malevolence for the drum breakdown alone.

Review: Stealth drops from Funkineven on his Apron label under the new St. Julien alias! The Eglo affiliate is known for his wide reaching tastes and they include the sort of archival wave sounds and primitive electronics that Veronica Vasicka has been issuing via her Minimal Wave label. This three track self-titled 12" is the first overt example of Funkineven putting these influences to play in the studio and the first thing you think after the run out groove appears on the B Side is "Can we get some more of these please Steve!" Lead cut "Jupiter" sounds like an aggravated Das Ding on not enough sleep and too much coffee and has a wicked glam stomp to it and the title track plunges deeper into the foggy unknown of primitive electronics. A tip for the DJs out there, play B Side acid bleep cut at 33rpm for the true New Beat vibes.

Living Up (Gesloten Cirkel remix)
Review: With a debut LP from Joey Anderson and more Juju & Jordash material on the horizon, 2014 looks like being another interesting year for the Dekmantel label, and they kick off in style with a label debut for Mark Du Mosch. For those who don't know, Du Mosch is a regular contributor to a like-minded enclave of labels, racking up excellent 12?s for Lunar Disko, Tabernacle, Cyber Dance and Dutch labels Field, SD and Moustache Records. Having added some heritage to the fledgling Amsterdam operation Tape last year, Du Mosch adds a more established capital-based outlet to his discography with this Bay 25 12". Contained within are two snapshots of Du Mosch's production palette with the rough and rugged Rotterdam squat techno of the title track complemented by the deeper burn of "Living It Up". An added bonus comes in the form of Du Mosch's Moustache Techno pal Gesloten Cirkel who also makes his Dekmantel bow with a typically haywire modification of "Bay 25?.

Felix K - "Stone Edge" (Par Grindvik remix)
Rodhad - "Patient Zero" (Function remix)
Review: German techno outpost Dystopian takes a moment to reflect by looking back over their initial run of releases and picking out two gems to get the remix treatment. Felix K, fresh from his debut album last year, gets his "Stone Edge" track reworked by Par Grindvik, who drops a tough salvo of drums and distant melodic pads aimed at the heavier kind of techno-head. Function gets a touch deeper with his version of Rodhad's "Patient Zero", working some subtly optimistic notes into the low end arpeggio to give a more soulful effect in amongst the finely honed club-ready percussion.

Pitched Black
Review: Founded in 2012, Anthony Parasole's label The Corner has swiftly established a niche for itself in New York City's resurgent house and techno scene, and has become defined not by genre but the high quality of artists involved. DJ Qu, Fred P, Phil Moffa, Shawn O'Sullivan, Beau Wanzer and Tom Dicicco are amongst those to help establish The Corner as a label of true quality and the seventh release more than keeps up the standards. Parasole himself is involved, teaming up once more with old mucker Phil Moffa for a trio of techno burners. Lead track "Pressure" is appropriately titled with some dynamic EQing effects that are the work of a duo with a full understanding of what makes a dancefloor go crazy. The accompanying "Reduction" may pay homage to Terrence Dixon's work as Population One whilst "Pitched Black" is a pure banger - just listen!

From her Detroit base, Jefferson has one previous release to call on in the shape of the Urban Off Road 12" for the Argot label. Review: The ESHU label waste little time in matching their 2013 output, issuing a sixth 12" that sees Roger Gerressen, Jocelyn Abell, Daniel Lekatompessy and Ivano Tetelepta working together under the titular banner across four tracks. Taking a particularly Millsian approach to proceedings, there's a sense of focus demonstrated that hints the Eshu collective is only getting stronger. The mood varies too with the A Side split evenly between the stripped back and alien on "Cesium" and the creeping and hypnotic "Sulfur" whilst on the flip "Mercury" is one track you could imagine the likes of Dettmann or Rodhad pulling for. The title track closes out the EP on a more downbeat note, with crawling textures offering the minimal amount of forward momentum amidst a foggy coating of static.

531 Hz
531 Hz (Kab & Minilogue mix)
Review: Since serving up one of last year's most memorable albums in the self titled LP for Prologue, Voices Of The Lake duo Donato Dozzy and Neel have tread carefully, contributing only a track to Mike Parker's Geophone series. They adopt a similar method with this release for Concrete that sees them drop one production which is complemented by a flipside remix. Very much remaining in the techno netherworld, "531 Hz" is a ranging cut made epic by a vast space opening up in the top register, with a synth that reaches skywards in a kind of desert-based incantation that's as uplifting as it is beguiling. Kab and Minilogue combine for the remix that switches up the ethnic mood for a far more machine-driven ride through aquatic tones and melodies; a veritable oasis of a foil to the dusty A-side.

Review: As stalwarts of the LA techno scene Vidal and Vangelis Vargas have been doing it for a long time, although their first release under the Raiz banner came only in 2010. Having contributed many times to the Historia y Violencia imprint run by Silent Servant, their credentials for no-nonsense darkside techno are assured, and it's no different on this release that inaugurates VRV. There is a spread of feelings to be drawn from Cored, from the twitchy drive of "Cored 1" to the sci-fi malaise of "Cored 2", but across all the tracks the sound design and atmosphere is second to none. Just check the final track for an exercise in unflinching groove and heartbreaking subtlety.

Review: Ostgut Ton return to Fokus, last year's accomplished debut album from Marcel Fengler with a suitably high profile remix 12". Offering a more well rounded and experimental display of Fengler's production palette than the functional techno he's issued in 12" format, Fokus has a definite highlight thus far and it's interesting to see who has been chosen to rework tracks from it. Shed and Dave Clarke are naturally the headline draws here and their respective takes on "Jaz" and "Sky Pushing" are as full throttle as one would expect but it's nice to see Solar One boss Robert Witschakowski get the exposure his work as The Exaltics deserves with a killer throbbing Italo-techno rendition of "King Of Psi".

Review: Mute offshoot Liberation Technologies really found it's feet last year, issuing 12"s from the likes of Powell, Mark Fell, Vessel and Bandshell which really helped shape the narrative arc first established in 2012. The addition of Container - the current creative concern of Rhode Island-based Ren Schofield - makes perfect sense in the context of Liberation Technologies handpicking the cream of contemporary sonic explorers and his forthcoming Adhesive EP will be the label's first of 2014. Last seen on Rabih Beaini's Morphine Records with the Treatment EP, Schofield's Liberation Technologies debut comes in the shape of four tracks that see the producer continue to develop his driving brand of techno, with the label describing "a relentless pulse ever present at the core of these abrasive workouts."

Review: Analogue Coppers Lucretio and Marieu return to their Xenogears guise for a remix heavy 12" that precedes a full album from the Berlin-based Italian pair. It was under this project that the duo first surfaced as back in 2007, inaugurating the Restoration label and having since appeared in various forms with the likes of Steffi and Blawan in the ensuing years, Lucretio and Marieu have deemed the climate right to revisit Xenogears. Whilst details on the forthcoming LP Lost Artemis are yet to surface, this Multiverse Remixes 12" is a fine appetite wetter. The tightly sprung original is complemented well by remixes from Vinalog and Third Side, with the former's a highlight along with Madteo's self styled NY Blows-Wave remix which offers some typically left of centre multi tracked beat down.

Review: There are a few defining elements to Andrew Bowen and Dimitrios Poumplidis, the Manchester based pair known as AnD. Firstly, they clearly enjoy operating under a guise that flummoxes most internet search engines as much as they like swapping record labels, with output on Ann Aimee, Modal Analysis, Hidden Hawaii and their own label in the past 12 months. Equal to their migratory tactics is the sheer intensity of the AnD sound, with this debut for Speedy J's reliably on-point Electric Deluxe label the latest example. Hogging the A Side, "The Jellyfish" sets the tone, with pummelling kicks and overwhelming sound design that seem destined to destroy unprepared sound systems. It's matched in the uncompromising stakes by "Dtadmat" which means the calmer sounding but nonetheless quite haywire "ICDBYC" offers some welcome respite.

Review: Having established the ARTS label ethos of promoting contemporary hi-tech soul last year through releases of original material from Samuel L Session and Jonas Kopp, label boss Emmanuel Ashoka Beddewela changes tack somewhat with this first release of 2014. The Motor City enigma that is Terrence Dixon is the focus as tracks from last year's EP as Population One for Monique Musique are opened up for reinterpretation by I:Cube, Marcel Fengler and Mark Broom. If you indulged in the Giant Robot EP then you'll know it featured a quite distinct revision from Actress, and none of these new refixes quite match that effort from the Werk boss in the satanic stakes. Instead they are of a more floor pleasing nature with I:Cube's A Side hogging take on "Self Portrait" a highlight that's reminiscent of Carl Craig in his 90s pomp.

Review: Berlin operation Killekill continue where they left off with their impressive releases last year, with Genetically Modified Tracks the end product of pairing DJ Spider and Franklin De Costa together. Given the formidable nature of their individual production credentials, it's not surprising that the four tracks here left us craving more. Rhythmically, Spider and De Costa don't stray far from the 4/4 template but it's what occurs around it that's so memorable. It's no more apparent than on "Buzzsaw" where a sticky wooden block style rhythm is made all the more viscous by the thick bass line, muffled vocals and blurred jazz licks that cloak the channels. Elsewhere "The Unseen" is perhaps the most straight up dancefloor number, underpinned by a sense of impending gloom, which is a sensation shared with the post apocalyptic rumble of opening track "Slithis".

Review: There's plenty to get excited about with the emergence of Swedish deep techno operator Acronym, as has been demonstrated on the laid bare, haunting twelves in the Dimensional Exploration series and an appearance on Northern Electronics. This latest offering is no different, dancing a fine line between ambient drone abandon and sunken techno with arresting results. "Pelagic" may pile on plenty of drums but they're shaped so as not to disturb the thick blanket of pad that hangs over the track. "Photic" meanwhile works on a stepped kick pattern that punches through a murk of hazy, distant synths, forever caught in a hypnotic loop. This may be strung-out and repetitive, but it's the finest example of how to make that approach work.
