Take Me For A Little While (4:11)
83 (3:15)
Review: After leaving his native California for Chicago, Rudy De Anda dimmed down his beachy, psych-rock roots and dipped into some unknown waters, yielding enchanting results. His latest album, which was recorded in Austin, Texas, is romantically familiar and novelly soulful Latin pop that's a pure joy to behold. The b-side here - '83' - is a key number from that album. It has a subtle, cool groove perfect for sparking up a fat cigar and putting your feet up for the day. Given that De Anda is on such top form in this chapter of his life, it's no surprise he's done justice and then some to with his cover of Royal Jester's version of 'Take Me For A Little While'. The two tracks fit seamlessly together and beg repeat listens.

Review: Doctor Explosion returns with a surprise: they sing in Catalan! This limited-edition single features two tracks - one is a remake of their early classic 'Baby Please Go' (now titled 'Ves-te'n Si Us Plau') and the other is a cover of 'Perdo L'esma', an adaptation by Barcelona's Eurogrup of James Brown's' I'll Go Crazy.' Both songs are sung by Jorge Explosion in flawless Catalan and co-produced by Guerssen and Circo Perrotti. This release feels like a reunion of old friends that recalls the early days of both projects so is rife with nostalgia.

Review: The Daily Flash originated in Seattle in 1965, and true to their name burned bright and fast for around three years before disbanding. Fronted by Steve Lalor and with Doug Hastings on guitar, it's also noticeable their drummer was Jon Keliehor, who has since had an accomplished career in ambient and experimental music. As a perfect embodiment of the original psychedelic wave when it was still relatively attached to 60s pop, The Daily Flash have been revisited in scattershot form over the years, but finally their outstanding archive of recordings has been gathered in one coherent compilation which covers their brief but brilliant tenure.

Review: Dantalian's Chariot was Zoot Money's brief foray into the psychedelic world, fronted by a young Andy Somers, later known as Andy Summers of The Police. This 1967 project emerged from the remnants of Zoot Money's r&b group, Zoot Money's Big Roll Band and ventured into the experimental sounds of the psychedelic era. The band's only single, 'Madman Running Through The Fields', became an underground classic, blending West Coast influences and trippy Eastern sounds with inventive use of backward tapes and a swirling organ. The album "Chariot Rising" encapsulates the spirit of British psychedelia, with tracks like 'Sun Came Bursting Through My Cloud' and 'Soma' that showcase sitar-driven melodies and hypnotic rhythms. The band's sound is an eclectic mix of fuzzed-out guitar, jazz-inflected organ, and light Eastern touches, clearly influenced by both the British underground scene and the West Coast of the US. Tracks like 'World War Three' and 'High Flying Bird' explore darker, socially-conscious themes while maintaining the colorful sonic palette that defines this album. Although Dantalian's Chariot disbanded after just one single and an unreleased album, this record offers a fascinating glimpse into the psychedelic era and demonstrates the raw creativity of its members. Chariot Rising stands as an essential artifact of late 1960s British psych-rock.

Review:  Darge curates a selection of US garage stompers from the 60s, blending the easily accessible with the rare and coveted. Aimed at both new listeners and seasoned collectors, the compilation features artists like the Hooterville Trolley, the Litter, the Music Machine, the Venturie "5", the Lyrics, and the Nightcrawlers. These tracks reflect the raw energy of the 60s garage scene and pay homage to the British invasion bands such as the Who, the Kinks, and the Rolling Stones. With fuzzed guitars, driving beats, and a proto-punk attitude, the music feels fresh and is gaining traction with a new generation of fans. The compilation includes standout tracks like 'Action Woman' by The Litter, 'Hang It Out To Dry' by Bud & Kathy, and 'No Silver Bird' by The Hooterville Trolley. Housed in a sleeve designed by Robin Banks, who also created the artwork for Darge's Rockabilly compilation, this release is a visual and auditory treat. Liner notes from Keb Darge add a personal touch, making this an essential addition to any garage punk collection.

Review: Northampton-based psychedelic rock band Dark formed in 1968 while founding member Steve Giles was still at school. They quickly became popular on the live circuit and worked up a tight playing style that they managed to capture when in the studio. However, this is the first-ever accurate reproduction of one of the last surviving original twelve gatefold copies of the band's debut with the full-colour gatefold sleeve.

Review: Darkside - the duo of visionary producer Nicolas Jaar and guitarist Dave Harrington - have brought their touring drummer Tlacael Esparza into the recording process for this third album of theirs and he's now a full-time member. The songs for this album, which were recorded in Los Angeles, the south of France and Paris, came out of a series of improvisational jam sessions and they transport you into their swaggering and inventive universe where anything goes. The sheer joy of 'S.N.C' brings to mind Jaco Pastorius in terms of taking the bass guitar to new heights and the funk keyboard is a throwback to the 80s Casio era. 'Graucha Max' is a lot darker and twisted, delving into psychedelic rock with distorted lines, but then splicing it with sub-heavy bass that would ignite any club dancefloor. Darkside are right up there with the best the Los Angeles scene has to offer right now.

Review: In recent years we've had some exceptional examples of what you might call "narco rock 'n' roll". The sort of records that sound excellent when you're high, but seem to lose some of their potency - or relevance - when you're listing through headphones at your desk in the middle of a working day. Darkside's latest is, unsurprisingly, very much of the 'baked goods' ilk, but there's a delightfully pop-friendly element at play here that means you can get a lot out of the experience without having to have your own induced experience.

Musically it's actually relatively conservative stuff, considering the artists involved. Nicolas Jaar is a bonafide electronic visionary who has been pushing boundaries for well over a decade, while Dave Harrington is one of the most forward thinking multi-instrumentalists you'll ever hear. Together, though, they create a space that's strange but also familiar, like rediscovering forgotten albums from the early-1970s psyche heyday.

Review: Dead Meadow's latest offering marks a major leap forward for the legendary American psychedelic trio, blending their signature sound with new emotional depth. While their past albums have dazzled with expansive, mind-melting riffs and heavy cosmic grooves, this release brings a raw, introspective energy that highlights their lasting presence in the psych-rock world. Tracks like 'The Space Between' and 'A Wave Away' show the band experimenting with softer, more reflective moments, balancing their traditionally heavy sound with delicate, expansive textures. Drummer Mark Laughlin delivers some of his best performances yet, especially on 'Dead Tree Shake,' while the influence of late bassist Steve Kille is strongly felt throughout. His final contributions are heard in the powerful closing track, 'Voyager to Voyager,' where his artistry resonates deeply. This album proves Dead Meadow are evolving i not just in their sound, but in the essence of what continues to make them a standout act in modern psychedelic rock.

The eight tracks here are delicate and atmosphere-laden, drawing on everything from reverb-soaked, harmonic folk - 'Eye In Disguise' - to the Geiger counter rhythm and low-in-the-mix mutters of 'Force of Nature', like an understated Throbbing Gristle if such a thing could be imagined. If you enjoyed Trentemoller's recent reinvention of shoegaze, Scandi synthpop and post-punk on Dreamweaver, then this will be well up your street.

Review: Are you a dreamer? Swedish band Death & Vanilla ask across eight contemporary takes on German Krautrock, French Ye-ye pop and 60s psychedelic. Vocals are breezy, their moog synths fat, with guitars drenched in reverb and delay. At times the band's sound aligns with other kindred groups like Goldfrapp, Portishead or even Bjork (with "Vespertine") through their subtle take on downbeat, alternative '90s pop and this is heard most in "Let's Never Leave Here". "Are You A Dreamer?" delivers the Malmo trio a fifth studio LP following last year's conceptual soundtrack for stage and screen entitled "A Score For Roman Polanski's The Tenant", and this time around, our highlights include the spacey western riffs of "Eye Bath" and the ever-so dreamy "The Hum". Esoteric modern pop for sure.

Following on from their pummelling self-titled 2015 debut and 2020's cinematic-storytelling breakout, Divine Filth, their latest opus Chaos and the Art of Motorcycle Madness trades retrofitted fuzzed out blues solos with heaving heft and sludging machinations, while remaining poignantly restrained by a devoted purpose to their signature brand of classic doom-psych mayhem.

Review: December's Children's self-titled album, a gem from 1970, encapsulates the shifting musical landscape of the late 60s and early 70s. With a blend of blues, country and rock, their dynamic sound bridges the gap between pop and heavy rock featuring both male and female vocalists, tight harmonies and a touch of psychedelia. While not explicitly psychedelic, the infusion of psyche-style keys and organ adds a depth that's especially evident in tracks like 'Trilogy' but the band's inclination towards straightforward rock 'n' roll sets them apart from the overtly psychedelic trends of the time. Their country-blues roots serve as a precursor to later acts like Savoy Brown and Blodwyn Pig, showcasing their influence on the evolving rock sound. Pressed on eye-catching pink vinyl, December's Children's sole album remains a testament to their musical innovation and versatility.

Review: Jean Pierre Decerf's records have been sampled by top talent in the game (Wu-Tang Clan's RZA) and have also been massively inspirational to the likes of indie talent such as Air. However, the Parisian has always been something of a recluse and it's only now that his best moments have been collected into a definitive compilation by Born Bad Records. As both the cover and title suggest, this stuff is pure psychedelia from start to finish and tracks like "Like Flight" are simply stunning, where freaky guitar riffs meet with twisted synth patterns, funky percussion swings and seductive vocals. Not to exaggerate or anything but this LP might well be the best thing that's landed here at Juno HQ this week and you'd be silly not to pick it up. Essential electronic and discofied innovations.

Review: Emotional Rescue go hunting in the reeds for forgotten projects, and come up trumps once again. Delay Tactics formed at the beginning of the 80s as a tape looping project from Carl Weingarten and Reed Nesbit before expanding their palette with Walter Whitney's synth vamping. They didn't last past their second album, 1984's Any Questions?, but now the finest of the band's catalogue has been documented here. The sound is prime inquisitive 80s, teetering between the traditional band dynamic and the experimental pastures of technology-powered music. At times infectiously playful ('Oyster') and at others compellingly beautiful ('Kites'), Delay Tactics are exactly the kind of band that deserve another moment in the sunshine.

Review: Critically acclaimed guitarist and songwriter Steve Marion, known as Delicate Steve, drops his new album Delicate Steve Sings and the title raises questions. Does it refer to the distinct "voice" of his guitar, or is there actual singing this time? Marion's guitar sound is instantly recognisable and sets him apart in a crowded indie rock scene. His unique style has led to collaborations with Miley Cyrus, Paul Simon, Amen Dunes, and The Black Keys, and was even sampled by Kanye West. Inspired by Willie Nelson's Stardust during a trip to Greece, Marion's latest album channels iconic voices through his guitar and showcases its smooth, bold, and singular tone.

Review: Formed in 1967 in Ladbroke Grove, London, by musician and psychedelic counter-culture icon Mick Farren, this Deviants album is the second of three that they released at the end of the 60s. The chaotic ensemble of misfits were arguably the first anarchist rock band in Britain and enjoyed not taking life too seriously behind the mic. 'Somewhere To Go' and 'Jamies Song' is Stooges-esque proto-punk; 'You've Got To Hold On' blends 60s psychedelia with proto punk and sounds like it may have influenced Black Lips. 'Slum Lord' has an amateurish lo-fi charm and 'Pappa-Oo-Moa-Moa' is a Captain Beefheart-esque banger. Meanwhile, 'Let's Loot The Supermarket' epitomes their shambolic nature and shows how unafraid of embracing chaos they were.

Review: If there is one thing that you should know by now, it's that volume and ferocity has little to do with numbers. Dhidalah, for example, have been a three piece since the Tokyo space rock underground first conceived them, and make the kinds of cacophonies that threaten to shake buildings down to their very foundations, leaving crowds battered, bruised, and faced with a slow clamber back to the safety of Japan's notoriously conservative and non-shouty mainstream.

Sensoria is their latest outrageously powerful adventure, and it's just as uncompromising and cosmic as ever. From the rolling, and delightfully drone-y riffs of opener 'Soma', through to the more emotionally captivating and subtly moving 'Dead', there are incredible ideas in abundance here, it's just a question of whether or not you're ready to find them.

Review: Take a trip back in time with this exquisite live recording of The Doors back in their pomp and heyday. It was on June 5th 1970 that the legendary group fronted by Jim Morrison headed to the Seattle Center Coliseum following widespread plaudits for their recently released Morrison Hotel album in February of the same year. They were warped up in several legal issues but played out of their skin on this night for a broadcast on KUOW-FM radio. It was the fifth and last time they played in Seattle and finds them playing with power and vitality despite a hostile crowd and some sound issues.

Review: It's hard to believe there was a time when a band as culturally important as The Doors were still trying to make it, but even after their debut album came out in January 1967 there was a brief patch where they were still little known outside their stomping ground in LA. A couple of months later, they held a three-night stint at The Matrix in San Francisco playing to threadbare crowds, but luckily the sound engineer had the foresight to properly mic up and capture all of the performances and the recordings have since become a massive part of the band's legacy. As well as the classic tracks from the first album, and a few of their later hits, there are a generous dose of covers and obscurities which get a first-time airing thanks to this new expanded and authoritative five-LP edition, with the generous inclusion of an extra 7" with a hidden gem that will blow the minds of lifelong ardent fans, of which there are more than a few.

Review: DR Hooker's 1972 debut album, The Truth, is a masterpiece of hippy psychedelia and evangelical Christianity. Hooker's transformation from a substance-abusing hippy to a Bible basher is reflected in the lyrics, with tracks like 'Forge Your Own Chains' highlighting his battle with addiction and the album's eclectic mix of smooth balladry, rock standards, and experimental sound effects makes it a fascinating listen. Privately pressed with just 99 copies originally, this album is one of the rarest records of all time. Hooker assembled a group of local musicians for recording sessions at Dynamic Recording Studios in New Haven, Connecticut. The musicians' remarkable performances, including a ferocious piano solo on 'Fall In Love,' add to the album's allure. The Truth remains accessible to new audiences. This 2024 reissue on cobalt blue vinyl captures the album's mystique and enduring appeal.

Review: Dr. Robert of British 80s pop hitmakers The Blow Monkeys and British folk icon Matt Deighton (Mother Earth, Bill Fay, Paul Weller) have formed a new duo and release their album on the not-for-profit Last Night From Glasgow label. Their respective histories - writing really accomplished pop songs and performing in bands with some of the best artists in the history of rock n' roll - raise expectations, but they absolutely smash them. The title-track is a beautiful marriage of pastoral psych folk and glam rock, where there's melodies to spare and affecting, deeply soulful timbres at every turn.

Review: If you're unfamiliar with Dr Robert, we recommend checking out The Blow Monkeys. Robert Howard, as he's credited, formed the iconic new wave and 'sophisti-pop' group in 1981 and his piano keys, bass notes, guitar melodies, vocals and words define the band's sizeable back catalogue. Matt Deighton, meanwhile, might mean Mother Earth, Bill Fay, or Paul Weller to some listeners. He's been involved with them all. Here, the esteemed UK musicians run into one another on Last Night From Glasgow, a treasure of a patron-funded, not-for-profit label out of Scotland's biggest city. It couldn't be a more credible and thoughtful combination. Musically, the result packs crazy levels of musicality, taking a lead from pop, soft, folk and psyche rock to produce a sound which moves between soaring to understated grandeur to deceptively complex and overtly intimate.

Review: Dream Division present their latest album Rose In The Garden Of Winter, a contemporary gothic disco undertaking of polished and still genre-various proportions. Echoing the stylistic ambitions of Bauhaus, but perhaps describably updating their sound for the modern ear, Dream Division offer a metamorphic record, able to shapeshift into a range of chiropteran forms: cinematic punk, dub, goth-disco, lounge, even interluding raga. Impressively, the personnel list on this record make up an intricate human nonagram, through the central vector on this ritual star is Tom McDowell, who handles synths, vocoder, production and songwriting and commands a puppeteer's control over various synthesists, sitar caressers and theremin cooers. Delightfully devilish throughout, A Rose... reminds of something between a lycanthropic, late 70s Mancunian punk blowout and a fanged Italo-disco bashment in which the sprinklers sprinkle blood on sight of a daywalker.

Review: Brian Auger's Streetnoise was originally recorded in 1969 with Julie Driscoll and The Trinity. It stands proud as a genre-blurring work of jazz, rock, folk and soul greatness that found the group moving beyond their r&b and jazz roots. Instead, Auger and Driscoll crafted a progressive, avant-garde yet deeply soulful record in which Driscoll's haunting vocals contrast beautifully with Auger's instrumentation. The gatefold sleeve was designed by Hunter S Thompson collaborator Ralph Steadman and was inspired by Hogarth's satirical etchings which in turn reflects the album's artistic ambition. Streetnoise features dynamic instrumentals like 'Ellis Island', great reinterpretations of 'All Blues' and 'Flesh Failures' and standout tracks such as 'Indian Rope Man' which highlight Auger's visionary fusion of styles.

The opening track sets a compelling tone with its intricate rhythms and lush instrumentation, drawing listeners into a rich auditory landscape. As the album progresses, each composition introduces unique textures and melodies, showcasing the band's evolution and depth. Review: This marks the first re-press since the 2019 release of Lux Prima, which is the critically acclaimed album by Yeah Yeah Yeahs' lead vocalist Karen O and renowned producer Danger Mouse. Hailed as a "dreamy and poignant collaboration" back then, the album featured the single 'Woman' which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance and a Spike Jonze-directed performance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The reissue includes original artwork and a 16-page booklet highlighting their interactive exhibition, An Encounter with Lux Prima, which featured a 360-degree soundscape mixed at Skywalker Ranch.
