Review: It feels like every couple of years a new reissue of Kikagaku Moyo's magical 2013 album Forest of Lost Children comes around, but we are not moaning. This group is "a musical union between five free spirits" or in less poetic terms, band founders Go Kurosawa (on drums and vocals) and Tomo Katsurada (on guitar and vocals) plus bass by and Akira also on guitar. Their sound is as unique as any, with psychedelic, folk, prog-rock, psychedelic-folk-mixed-with-prog-rock and more all collided into one another on an album that keeps you on your toes and guessing at what might come next even within each track, let alone across the whole album. If you're a new interested party this is a great primer for what the band is all about.

Psych/Garage Rock
Review: Indonesian groove merchants Lair are back on Guruguru Brain with their second LP, which finds them digging even deeper into themes as well as the instrumental psych sound they established themselves on. The album reflects on the land in the region of their hometown Jatiwangi, on the northern shores of Java, and the tension between love for their home and the grim portent of industrialisation. Led by the strident, meandering guitar sound as it careers through all manner of moody landscapes, it's an engrossing trip-out and a sincere expression from a community which neatly proves the international power of psych rock as a vessel for a message.

Review: Forget chip music, Taipei trio Mong Tong have again managed to crack the 'reminds me of a Mega Drive cut scene' sound in all its glory here. A record that's synthy to its core but still manages to muster enough guttural funk to make it feel like the ground beneath your feet is part of each track's fabric, it's a dancefloor groover writhing out of some epic, ethereal thing - hardly a bog standard experience. Opening on the aptly titled 'Intro', a slow float through refrained keys that conjure images of digitised clouds, the stage is set for the action that follows. The title number even opens on a crackled sample of a locked groove Wu Tang Clan wouldn't refuse before fully dropping in, perhaps nodding to those five-second intros to new stages of a game. 'Chakra' takes on a darker but no less hypnotic approach, with 'Jou-tau' finishing us with a roundhouse kick of Asian TV samples and another immersive, richly textured beats-y arrangement.
