Two of the many enduring compositions from Lee Field's Emma Jean album, both "Just Can't Win" and "Still Gets Me Down" are proof that Fields is arguably the titan of soul music. Writing and recording long after many of his peers - and still sounding rich, emphatic and real - Fields delivers in every angle. "Just Can't Win" is a driving hooky number where Lee and the horns share a sizzling spotlight, ably followed by lavish Rhodes on the chorus. "Still Gets Me Down" leans more on the ballad tip as The Expressions lay down a swooning dynamic that provides more than enough space for Lee's lamenting cries. Classic modern soul, it doesn't get any better than this.
