Review: Back in 2016 On-U-Sound released "Environmental Holes & Drastic Tricks", a five-disc retrospective of the early years of Bonjo Ivabinghi Noah and Adrian Sherwood's percussion-led Afro-dub project African Head Charge. "Drumming Is A Language", the second and final retrospective, brings the story bang up to date. Like its' predecessor, it gathers together four key, game-changing albums (1990's incredible "Songs of Praise", '93's "In Pursuit of Shashamane", 2005's "Vision of a Psychedelic Africa" and 2011's "Voodoo of the Godsend") with a bonus CD of unheard versions, remixes and revisions recorded between 1990 and '93. Touching on all manner of influences and showcasing the strong links between African and Caribbean music, the showcased material is as inventive, otherworldly and inspired as dub gets.

Review: In the annals of On-U Sound's mighty legacy within experimental dub, African Head Charge stands tall as one of the most essential projects. Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah and Adrian Sherwood's partnership yielded some of the most percussively rich records on the label and there is a long and winding run of albums to take in from the 1981 debut My Life In A Hole In The Ground through to 2012's Voodoo Of The Godsent. Finally Noah and Sherwood are back at it with arguably their most incisive album in years, billed as a musical journey to Noah's current hometown in north Ghana. The layers and detail loom out of the mix at you with disorienting wonder, as Noah's trademark drum patterns fly into Sherwood's dubwise acrobatics with spectacular results. Review: We last heard from African Head Charge back in 2011 with the album Voodoo Of The Godsent. Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah and Adrian Sherwood's experimental dub project has since enjoyed a brief archival run of cuts from the early years, which took us back to 1981 and their My Life In A Hole In The Ground album, but now we're being treated to a fresh listening experience. This time, Noah is leading us on a psychoactive trip to his hometown in north Ghana, Bolgatanga, and the mode of transport is a mesmerising tapestry of percussion and dub wise processing, all stitched together with the flair and continued inspiration of two true originals and life-long collaborators. It's as good as that promises to be, and then some.

Review: The musical worlds of Africa, Jamaica and London collide as African Head Charge - the project put together by On-U Sound icon Adrian Sherwood and Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah (of Jamaican heritage but with longtime roots laid down in Africa). Their first new material in 11 years, it's a sonically fascinating mix of cultures and sound approaches, with Sherwood going for subtle, light touches on the dub front rather than the full on echo chamber madness more usually associated with the style. Single 'A Bad Attitude' is a great example of what's going on here - warped around the edges rather than from the core, as philosophical utterings and exotic (to us anyway) instrumentation get into the On-U groove.

Review: By the time they recorded "Songs of Praise" in 1990, African Head Charge had gone from being an Adrian Sherwood solo project to a fully-fledged band helmed by percussionist Bonjo Ivabinghi Noah. Here reissued to mark the album's 20th birthday, the set remains arguably the group's greatest single work. While rooted in the twin attractions of heavy dub and dense African percussion, the album makes extensive use of a dizzying array of influences, from gospel, steppers reggae and yacht rock, to traditional Arabic music, blues, disco, religious chants and even industrial music. This edition features a handful of decent bonus tracks, but they're unnecessary: the original album is little less than a masterpiece and should reside in every discerning listener's record collection.

Review: On its release last spring, reviewers hailed Horace Andy's Midnight Rockers as the honey-voiced reggae legend's best album in decades. It was certainly special, with the mighty Adrian Sherwood's production helping elevate the set to future classic levels. It was followed by the alternative, dub style 'Midnight Scorchers' album, which naturally featured Sherwood pushing the envelope far further than he did on the original set. This double-disc set brings together both sets, adds a couple of previously unreleased cuts, and allows us to once again wallow in the magnificence of such highlights as 'Safe From Harm' (a genuinely brilliant, surprisingly dark Massive Attack cover), the Ital Horns-heavy 'Material', Daddy Freddy hook-up 'Midnight Scorchers' and the Melodica-heavy dub workout 'Sleepy's Night Cap'.

Review: A companion album to Jamaican dub singer Horace Andy's 'Midnight Rocker', 'Midnight Scorchers' is an artful sequel to the hugely acclaimed album featuring dancehall reimaginations from Adrian Sherwood, practically the modern messiah of dub. Sherwood was already doing masterful work on the original album, using live studio instrumentation to make Andy's voice mor vibrant and powerful - leading to multiple five star reviews. 'Midnight scorchers' takes a soundsystem approach to the proceedings, adding MC features, new tracks and stripped back re-imaginings of the tracks into the more traditional reggae style of dub that Andy would've ended up recording if not for the masterful production that Sherwood brought to the table. Housed on a limited transparent orange disc and stunning artwork, this is a huge dub release and not one to miss out on.

Review: A long-standing figure on the London jazz scene, trumpeter Harry Beckett kept his music fresh over a long career, and none more so than on his debut On-U Sound release in 2008 produced by Adrian Sherwood, which invites reggae and dance music influences to happily live alongside his modal jazz flavours. Now reissued posthumously, The Modern Sound Of Harry Beckett tracks the legacy of this contemporary jazz eminent, who passed away in 2010. Beckett channels both his Caribbean roots and trumpeting abilities, offering a novel confounding of sparse, skittish beats verging on digidub, with spryly slick soundings of the horn. Made up of isolated recordings laid down by Beckett, and then celebratedly combined with dancehall and dub movements afterwards, our fave has to be the unabashedly dubstep godsend, 'Like You Didn't Know', which spreads Beckett's horns out to virtuosic effect, against a wickedly womping wash.

Review: Creation Rebel were the original On-U Sound house band, laying down some of the definitive riddims in the early days of Adrian Sherwood's voyage into dub. 40 years on from their last record, the trio of Crucial Tony, Eskimo Fox and Magoo have reunited with Sherwood at the controls for another masterclass in heavyweight sounds from a crack team of players. Originally they formed as a backing band for the late Prince Far-I, and some of his unmistakable tones manifest on this new record from archive tapes, while Daddy Freddy brings his famous fast chat flow to proceedings and Italian synth player Gaudi crops up on occasion too. Rather than dub-by-numbers, this is an exploratory record which takes in different grooves and influences, all filtered through the expanse of space-time manipulation the dub wise approach inspires.

The series encompasses out of print and much in demand UK dub reggae albums from the late 1970s and early 1980s, all highlighting crucial early production work from the mixing desk of Adrian Sherwood. The band's post-reformation, 2023 album Hostile Environment, is thrown in for good measure. This mammoth 6xCD edition houses five dozen tracks of indelibly experimental dub and reggae tracks, many of which tend towards the spacier and more cosmically-intoned ends of the dub tradition, which was above alive and kicking at the height of the genre's fame from the late 1970s onwards, and spearheaded by none other than group members Clifton Morrison, Eric 'Fish' Clarke and more.

Review: As part of a rather comprehensive looking back and reissuing of some of Creation Rebel's best and most enduring albums, On-U Sound pay due homage to their one and only in-house band. Close Encounters Of The Third World is one such album; it was first released in 1978, and draws a titular link between alienation and privation. The eight-track LP collates the instrumental talents of Lizard The Wizard, Dr. Pablo and Crucial Tony, and hears a fantastic mixing job by none other than Prince Jammy. With an initial charge to 'Know Yourself' before externalising the pilous inner monologue with 'Natty Conscience Free', Creation Rebel here demonstrate a stage of collective soul-searching and a subsequently serene set of songs.

Review: Yet one more classic eight-tracker to now be reissued via Creation Rebel's home label On-U Sound, Rebel Vibrations was their third album for Hitrun and followed up 1978's Close Encounters Of The Third World and Dub From Creation. Similarly lackadaisical and spaced-out to its predecessors, Rebel Vibrations nonetheless charted a slight upping of the weighty ante - with bass parts becoming more prominent and starker - and a refining of the delays and FX as they sit in the mix.

Review: For the first time since 1982, Creation Rebel's Psychotic Jonkanoo is made available on vinyl. Curiously first released on the primarily post-punk oriented Glaswegian label Statik, their sixth album here keeps to the usual eight-track formula, yet hears a softer discographic progression; compared to their earlier works, it is less prodding and weighty, and instead opts for a headroomier and more reverb-laden atmosphere, through which the album's distinctive and novel call-and-response chants can peek. Bandleader Crucial Tony was aided on the vocal front by harmonies from other group members, in a style reminiscent of Black Uhuru, plus the occasional guest such as John Lydon of the Sex Pistols and Public Image Limited providing backing harmony (!) on 'Mother Don't Cry'.

Review: Released in 1982, 35 Years From Alpha is the only solo LP by legendary saxophonist "Deadly" Headley Bennett, a towering figure in reggae history. A graduate of Jamaica's iconic Alpha Boys School, Bennett played alongside the likes of Bob Marley, The Abyssinians, and Alton Ellis, contributing to the golden era of reggae. This long-awaited reissue highlights Bennett's distinctive style, blending jazz, reggae, and dub across a range of standout tracks. Review: Originally released way back in 1982, 35 Years From Alpha is a genuine rarity: a rare solo album from the late, great 'Deadly' Headley Bennett, one of reggae's most prolific saxophonists of the 70s and 80s. The album was produced by Adrian Sherwood, with Bennett being backed by a who's who of fine Jamaican musicians and On-U-Sound regulars. As this timely reissue proves, all involved did a terrific job providing a platform for the talented horns-man. For proof, check the ska-tinged dancefloor dub excellence of '35 Years From Alpha', the rootsy sweetness of 'Head Charge', the soulful dub-jazz weight of 'Little Dove' and the spaced-out, intergalactic dub wonder that is 'Independent Man (Horns Cut)'.
